Fatma becomes jealous of Raoudha, a journalist who tries to seduce Ahmed. After the death of his grandfather, Ahmed wants to sell all his properties but his mother is irritated. Elies, a young man and cousin of Safiya, spends Ramadan with the Tammars during which he steals items from the house and conducts illegal operations in the textile company of Safiya, for the benefit of Lamine, a businessman who buys the most important monuments of the suburb and does his best to buy the coffee of Slouma and his cousin Néjia. Néjia refuses the offer and experiences problems with his cousin. Lamine also wants to buy the house of Baya, an old and bourgeois house; Baya, who has infertility problems, accepts to have children. El Hadj also offers all her mother's jewelry to her sister, as well as one of the two houses in the Medina, which is worth more than the share she would have inherited according to Islamic jurisprudence. Mannoubiya and Taher have three young daughters, while El Hadj, a widower, has two sons: Slimane and Azzouz. Mannoubiya wishes to marry his two eldest children to his nephews: Hallouma loves Azzouz and Aïcha loves Slimane. While El Hadj works in a railway company, his colleague, a poor worker, dies and leaves him a young girl, Zeineb. He lodges her with his sister and intends to marry her to his elder, Slimane. However, Slimane comes home one evening with a smell of alcohol; his father sends him away from the house, so it is Azzouz marries Zeineb even if Mannoubiya and Hallouma are jealous. Slimane married Aïcha. El Hadj dies after forgiving Slimane. Azzouz does not love his wife and mistreats her, especially after the death of her father. Slimane divorces his share of Aïcha and marries Zohra. Hallouma secretly hides her mother's pearl necklace in Zeineb's wardrobe. Mannoubiya believes that Zeineb is the person in charge therefore Azzouz, after having found the collar, sends this one to Dar Joued, a space of confinement for the disobedient women, but she flees in a zaouïa. Aziza, El Hadj's secret daughter, hyper depressed, spends her time between her father's house and a nearby zaouïa. She is the daughter of El Hadj's second secret wife, the daughter of the farmer sharecropper he bought after the death of his wife.
