This Veterans Day, we’re celebrating the importance of Veterans as storytellers. Film Independent is inviting 100 U.S. Military Veteran (working or aspiring) filmmakers or actors in the entertainment industry to receive a Film Independent Membership, for a contribution of just $1.00!
Veterans Day is a federal public holiday that always falls on the 11th of November – but why is that? The day’s origins date back to World War I. At 11:00 am Paris local time on November 11, 1918, the Armistice of Compiègne was signed to officially end WWI. In honor of this special day, we’ve curated 10 films (and one limited series!) that embody the values and spirit of the service members across all five branches: the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps and Navy.

“We dug coal together.”
Timothy Olyphant closed out Justified in 2015 with those powerful final words, an ode to his character Raylan Givens’ complicated relationship with his home Harlan County, his longtime friend-turned-enemy Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins), and even himself. For those who stuck through the FX modern Western’s six seasons, it was a perfect encapsulation of the journey: from the Bennetts to the Crowes and everyone in between — the legend of Drew Thompson to a stiff drink of Pappy Van Winkle — the Justified community dug coal together.
Now, it’s time to head back to the mines.
Years after closing the door on the Kentucky-based crime drama, Raylan Givens returns in the form of limited series Justified: City Primeval. Taking its cues from Elmore Leonard’s celebrated novel City Primeval, the newest iteration of Justified bids farewell to Harlan, and all of Raylan’s old friends and foes, in...

You can't outrun your past. This is what U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) discovers time and again throughout six splendid seasons of "Justified." The series opens with hotshot Givens getting busted down from a glamorous Miami assignment to his home county of Harlan, Kentucky, where he immediately finds himself at odds with Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins), a childhood rival and scion of the once-powerful drug trafficker Bo Crowder (M.C. Gainey).
Givens detests being back home for a variety of reasons: his inveterate criminal father (Raymond Barry) is still hanging around, as is his ex-wife (Natalie Zea), who, despite some lingering affection, wisely...

Like many low budget action films, there is a constant, uneasy tension between ambition and what is possible. Hustle Down is aiming to be a Michael Mann thriller, but the constraints constantly degrade the experience. Whether it is low budget cameras, direction, or uneven acting.
An almost unrecognisable Tom Sizemore (with dyed black hair and looking elderly) is running around (and gosh is it a sad sight) in a cheap shirt, avoiding cartel hitmen.
I barely recognise the wispy voice of Tom Sizemore here, nor his ghoulish countenance and I certainly don’t recognise his ripe acting. He was one of my favourite actors for a long time, and it is so sad to...

A homicidal hockey mascot. A firefighter-turned-fire marshal-turned-Stanley Cup Finals goalie. Lethal gym equipment. A magnificent helicopter escape plan. Lots and lots of roundhouse kicks. All of these elements and more make Sudden Death, released on this date in 1995, the most glorious action extravaganza of superstar Jean-Claude Van Damme’s career.
Essentially Die Hard At A Hockey Game, Sudden Death tells the tale of divorced former firefighter Darren McCord (Jcvd), who, after a workplace tragedy, has become a fire marshal at Pittsburgh Civic Arena. For his young son Tyler (Ross Malinger)’s birthday, Darren is bringing Tyler and daughter Emily (Whittni Wright) to the office. The occasion? Game 7 of the 1995 Stanley Cup Finals, an imagined rematch of the 1992 Stanley Cup Finals bout between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Vice President Daniel Binder (Raymond J. Barry) is in attendance with a prestigious entourage in a skybox.

Worst dads on tv and film
Homer Simpson, “The Simpsons”
Homer Simpson is TV’s most famous dad but not exactly a role model. He may be good at heart but some of his favorite past times include drinking, laying on the couch, and strangling his son Bart whenever he gets out of line.
Daniel Plaineview, “There Will Be Blood”
Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis) says it straight out, “he’s an oilman”; he puts family second behind his own greed. That becomes abundantly clear as his relationship deteriorates with his adopted son throughout the movie.
Al Bundy, “Married With Children”
Ed O’Neill was a very different kind of family man on “Married With Children” than he is now on “Modern Family.” Al’s cynical outlook on life has a hard time not having an effect on his kids.
Frank Gallagher, “Shameless“

With “Rocketman” set to delight audiences with another tale of how a rock icon found fame and fortune, let’s remember the movie that did it better than all the rest: the 2007 film “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.” While not an actual biopic, a recent oral history for The Ringer shows just how much work went into making sure that the parody shone as brightly as the real thing.

Looking back on this still-young century makes clear that 2007 was a major time for cinematic happenings — and, on the basis of this retrospective, one we’re not quite through with ten years on. One’s mind might quickly flash to a few big titles that will be represented, but it is the plurality of both festival and theatrical premieres that truly surprises: late works from old masters, debuts from filmmakers who’ve since become some of our most-respected artists, and mid-career turning points that didn’t necessarily announce themselves as such at the time. Join us as an assembled team, many of whom were coming of age that year, takes on their favorites.
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story is one of the last of its kind. The spoof movie – that is, the vigorous feature-length ribbing at popular films and Hollywood pieties of the moment – was already in decline by the late 2000s.

It’s only appropriate that the week of Thanksgiving contains episodes about family politics and dynamics, and “threat of eXtinction” was no exception to that. Of course, The Gifted features an entire family running from the law and intertwined with other mutants, so family drama comes pretty easily to the show. Though this episode was able to give us a little bit of internal family drama with the budding family of Polaris and Eclipse, or even fallout from the death of Blink’s foster family, it mostly went outside the Strucker family and dealt with Reed’s father (the masterful Raymond J. Barry) and their

Long before Tom Cruise fended off extraterrestrial tripod fighting machines in 2005's War of the Worlds, there was Orson Welles' original radio drama, which was broadcast in 1938 and caused the world to falsely believe there was an impending alien invasion.
Brave New Jersey is about that very night in the small town of Lullaby, and, in this exclusive clip, Pitch Perfect 3 star Anna Camp plays Peg Prickett, a schoolteacher who is ready to stay and fight during an attack from Mars, which does not go over well with her tough-talking fiancé.

Gravitas Ventures has released the first trailer to the comedy “Brave New Jersey,” a film about a small New Jersey town on the night of Orson Welles’ 1938 “War of the Worlds” radio broadcast that sent millions of listeners into a panic, believing the U.S. was being invaded by Martians.

The first trailer has landed for Brave New Jersey, the cheekily-titled comedy that finds Arrested Development and Veep star Tony Hale as Clark Hill, one of many who experienced the now-legendary day where Orson Welles’ broadcast War of the Worlds over radio waves in 1938 and started a hysteria of massive proportions. Helmed by first time director Jody Lambert (who penned People Like Us), Brave New Jersey seems to be about the lies we believe, and the fun you might end up having along the way.

It was the original Fake News story.
In a small New Jersey town on the night of Orson Welles’s legendary 1938 “War of the Worlds” radio broadcast, the hoax that terrified millions into believing Martians were invading America, citizens face what they think is their last night on Earth.
Here’s a look at the upcoming film Brave New Jersey where the aliens never show up.
The over-worked town’s mayor Clark (Tony Hale, “Veep”) will take a chance on love. The demure schoolteacher Peg (Anna Camp, “Pitch Perfect”) will become a warrior. The aimless reverend (Dan Bakkedahl, “Life in Pieces”) will rediscover his faith. "So, what are we supposed to do now?" Gravitas Ventures has released the trailer for an indie comedy titled Brave New Jersey, from filmmaker Jody Lambert. The film tells the true story of a small town in New Jersey that freaked out during Orson Welles' legendary 1938 "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast, believing it was real. They decided to make this a comedy, which may work better in the end since playing this serious would be a whole other thing. Brave New Jersey features an ensemble cast including Tony Hale, Heather Burns, Anna Camp, Sam Jaeger, Raymond J. Barry, Dan Bakkedahl, Mel Rodriguez, Grace Kaufman, Matt Oberg, and Erika Alexander. This looks totally goofy but still heartfelt and fun. Enjoy. In recent weeks, the various folks that make up Gotham‘s criminal element have been forced to choose sides in a war that may threaten to tear the city asunder, making for the strangest of bedfellows. In fact, that theme will play a vital role in tonight’s episode as the Batman prequel series pays tribute to Nine Inch Nails with “Heroes Rise: Pretty Hate Machine.”

Despite experiencing a bit of a ratings slump in recent weeks, Gotham has absolutely been on fire since returning for the second half of its third season. Welcome to Lullaby, NJ, population 506, the fictional town at the center of Jody Lambert’s delightful comedy Brave New Jersey “where strangers are friends and no one is a stranger.” Home of the Rotolactor, a robotic milking machine, the central New Jersey town is only a few hours from Grover’s Mills, the “epicenter” of the great October 1938 martian invasion chronicled in Orson Welles’ legendary War of the Worlds broadcast. Depicting this evening of misconstrued alien invasion, Lambert’s comedy is far more modest affair than the Tom Cruise film as Lullaby comes together for the biggest night in its history.
Reluctantly led by mayor Clark Hill (a restrained Tony Hale) who cautions against panic, he’s overruled by old Captain Collins (Raymond J. Barry), who is quick to formulate a plan based on his time in War War I. The do-or-die night also gives characters a chance at reflecting on their own lives,...

Actually, before we start delving into the finale itself, let’s gain an overview of the handful of episodes leading up to it. Fortunately for us, TV Line has been able to tease what’s to come in a nutshell:

[Editor’s Note: The following is what IndieWire TV Critic Ben Travers claims to be an interview he conducted with Vanilla Ice — an “expert on ice,” according to Mr. Travers — about the new At&T Original Series, “Ice.” Despite his insistence, it’s quite clear that the below back-and-forth is not an interview (no recording or even transcript could be provided upon request), but simply a staged conversation using lyrics from “Ice, Ice, Baby” to introduce key points about the TV show, “Ice.” We apologize for his behavior, as well as to Mr. Ice, if he happens to read this. But it’s been a long week, so we’re just gonna go with it.]
All right, stop.
Yes, please. Let me stop you right here. If all you need to know about “Ice” is whether or not it’s worth your time, I can safely assure you it’s not.
Collaborate and listen.
Collaborate? Like, who’s working together on “Ice”? Well, that’s really the only reason anyone is aware “Ice” exists. The At&T Original Series airing on DirecTV’s Audience Network is directed and produced by Antoine Fuqua, and he’s easily the biggest name here. The main acting talent consists of Cam Gigandet, who hasn’t aged a day (or discovered any depth of emotion) since he killed Marissa 10 years ago on “The O.C.”, and Jeremy Sisto, who’s back to playing the black sheep brother you want to love but know you can’t.
Ice is back with a brand new invention.
I have to disagree with you there.
