Remakes are always a tricky proposition. Some of the greats both in the horror genre and elsewhere are actually remakes, whether it’s a loose one or not. Be it The Magnificent Seven coming from Seven Samurai or The Thing being birthed into imitation dog from the Christian Nyby and Howard Hawks original. I talk about The Thing A Lot but obviously it’s for a reason. You could also throw The Fly in that same category too while we are here. Those are some of the examples of the good but unfortunately, things can go downhill and fast. You have harmless ones like the Friday the 13th remake or Texas Chainsaw, the annoyingly unnecessary like Halloween and Amityville Horror, or the egregiously awful like The Fog and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Like them or loathe them, or in our case both, they are here to stay, and each...

TriStar Pictures believed they had the surest of things when they hired Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin to make the first Hollywood "Godzilla" flick. The duo had just delivered the biggest film of 1996 in "Independence Day," and appeared poised to become a blockbuster brand name on par with Steven Spielberg and James Cameron. Every studio in town wanted to make their next smash hit. But this is where the trouble started: TriStar wanted Emmerich and Devlin to make its next smash hit.
The 1998 iteration of "Godzilla" did not originate with Emmerich and Devlin. TriStar came very close to greenlighting it in 1994 with Jan De Bont (hot off the success of "Speed") directing a screenplay by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio (who would eventually make their franchise fortune on the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series), which would've placed it in direct competition with "Independence Day" during the summer of 1996. So this all felt awfully fortuitous.

Keanu Reeves established himself as a bankable commercial action star in the 90s with films such as Point Break and The Matrix. However, Reeves’ 1994 action-drama Speed was a blockbuster and catapulted the actor to new heights. As a result, it was a surprise that Reeves did not return for a sequel.
Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock in Speed
During an interview, Reeves spoke about not appearing in the 1997 sequel and revealed the real reason he passed on the project. At the same time, he also opened up about the possibility of revisiting the franchise in the future. Here is everything Keanu Reeves said about not reprising his role in Speed 2: Cruise Control.

Our planet can be absolutely terrifying. From unpredictable earthquakes to monstrous storms, there’s really no shortage of ways in which our cosmic home can kill us. And yet, our species perseveres, with humanity going so far as to entertain itself by telling stories about how we can overcome – or at the very least survive – the fury of nature. In fact, these stories have become so prevalent in popular culture that disaster movies are known to be one of the most profitable genres in all of cinema, and while some audiences remain critical so-called “disaster-porn,” I’d argue that the best of these films are really about the endurance of the human spirit.
And if you’re planning on telling a story about people coming to terms with how fragile they are when confronted with nature, why not place the camera in the hands of your own main characters? I mean,...

Twisters might be all tornadoes wrecking the Earth, but at the heart of it is a good banter romance, and that’s what Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell have got going on in the latest trailer shown Wednesday at CinemaCon.
That gal-guy back and forth was what was also at the heart of the original 1996 Twister movie starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton.
“You think you can interrupt a tornado,” Powell’s cowboy tornado chaser asks Edgar-Jones’ city girl.
“In theory,” she answers, “in the field and in the moment, I got it wrong. We never had a chance.”
“You want one?” Powell asks, giving her an invitation for a good time.

Director Lee Isaac Chung introduced the footage today during Universal’s presentation at Caesars Colosseum for what he said was his first CinemaCon.

There are plenty of ways to describe what happened at Caesars Palace on Wednesday when Universal Pictures delivered Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters to the Colosseum stage. Some examples: The film whipped up a frenzy; exclusive footage spun through Sin City; action scenes blew away theater owners, etc., etc.
All of the above work as Universal debuted never-before-seen scenes of the summer release courtesy of Chung and his castmembers Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos, who turned up for an extended introduction.
Chung was first to walk out — an appearance that marked his first time at CinemaCon — and the director said that many in the audience might be wondering why he decided to jump into summer blockbuster tentpole territory after carving out a career in independent film. “I’ve been fascinated by tornadoes all my life,” he said, adding that he grew up in Arkansas, where tornadoes were just a way of life.

With Godzilla x Kong‘s box office success and Godzilla Minus One’s Oscar win making the kaiju legend more relevant than ever, let’s turn the doomsday clock back to 1998 as Awfully Good Movies tackles Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin’s infamous American reboot, known simply as Godzilla!
With TriStar eager to keep its rights agreement with Toho to make its own Godzilla trilogy after director Jan de Bont was dropped from the film, they turned to the same duo that just blew up both the box office and the White House with Independence Day, who were allowed to do whatever the hell they wanted with the giant lizard’s American debut as long as they could get the flick made within a year for Memorial Day 1998. Neo, portrayed by Keanu Reeves in The Matrix, employs a range of martial arts techniques in all four films, even though his most famous quote is “I know kung fu”. The Wachowskis’ action film series were renowned for their brilliant martial arts action, which was unusual in American cinema at the time, in addition to their surreal storylines and thought-provoking ideas.
However, keen-eyed fans may have noticed that Neo prefers punching over kicking in his battles with the agents. Have you ever wondered why, though? Well, Reeves had back surgery shortly before filming on The Matrix began in order to treat a spinal injury that was paralyzing his legs.

As a result, the actor found kicking difficult, so he decided to focus on punching in Neo’s fight scenes.

It’s been nearly 70 years since Godzilla first step foot on the silver screen with Ishiro Honda’s 1954 opus, Gojira. What started as an allegory about the horrors of the atomic bomb and war has since been reimagined myriad times to cover everything from the awesome forces of nature to geopolitical alliances, the absurdities of consumerism to mankind’s inability to curb pollution. Whether Godzilla is a tragic monster, a defender of earth, or children’s role model, there’s no denying the appeal the Big G has to audiences.
After all, it’s damn entertaining to watch a giant monster stomping around the streets of a metropolis and leaving a path of destruction. Sure, American movies like King Kong and The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms primed American audiences for features of this magnitude. But really, it was Godzilla and the evolution of the IP’s unique genre of films — kaiju...

Speed is heading back into UK cinemas this April, bringing Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock and a massive bus along with it.
Every now and then we run a story about a film having an anniversary re-release that makes not just the writer of the piece in question feel old, but a certain subset of those reading.
Speed, then. The Jan De Bont-directed hit action movie that turned Keanu Reeves into a summer blockbuster movie star. That had a similar effect on Sandra Bullock too. The one about the bus that can’t go below 50. The one with Dennis Hopper and the watch. The one with the sequel where the thing went really slowly and the audience went Wtf. That one.
The original remains a modern blockbuster classic, and was a big hit back in the summer of 1994. And if you fancy seeing Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock, Jeff Daniels, the haircut,...

Two years after the original run of the 1960s series "The Twilight Zone" came to an end, creator Rod Serling found himself as essentially a writer for hire. In his book "The Twilight Zone Companion," author Marc Scott Zicree says Serling was "far from satisfied" at that point in his career, quoting Serling's friend, producer Dick Berg, as saying "Serling and Chayefsky were the two major names from the golden era of television. And to move from that to becoming a member of the army of working journeymen writers was a great comedown. In Hollywood, he was a guy taking assignments."
One of those assignments was a 1966 TV movie called "The Doomsday Flight." Serling wrote the screenplay, which involved a mentally disturbed mechanic who used to work for an airline planting a bomb on a commercial airliner and rigging it to explode if the plane falls below 4,000 feet. Things turned...

Steven Spielberg and Stephen King. Two artists at the very top of their fields. King: one of the best-selling authors of all time. Spielberg: the filmmaker who invented the blockbuster. How have these guys never worked together? Well, it's not for lack of trying. In fact, these titans have come very close to teaming up on several occasions. When Spielberg was writing "Poltergeist," he wanted King's help with the script. "It didn't work out because it was before the internet and we had a communication breakdown," King told EW.
Then there was "The Talisman," the fantasy novel King co-wrote with the late Peter Straub. Before the book even hit the shelves, Spielberg scooped up the rights — but neither a film nor a TV adaptation has ever materialized. "Several times he came very close to making it, and there were a lot of discussions about that," King said. It was...

The disaster film Twister (watch it Here) was a massive success for Warner Bros., Universal Pictures, and Amblin Entertainment when it was released during the summer movie season in 1996. Made on a budget of $90 million, it earned almost $500 million at the global box office and ranked as the tenth highest-grossing film of all time. Quickly cashing in with a sequel would have made a lot of sense. But while there were rumors – including a memorable one that said the sequel would involve a tornado hitting a major city – a follow-up never made it into production. Until now. Universal and Amblin are reviving the Twister IP with a film called Twisters, which is set to receive a theatrical release on July 19, 2024. Twenty-eight years later, will it be able to replicate or surpass the success of its predecessor? We’ll have to wait and see. But for know, we’re going to...

“Don’t breathe. Don’t look back,” commanded the tagline for the movie Twister from 1996. Apparently, that’s not a warning that Universal Pictures wants to heed. Instead, they’re looking back to the ’90s with a new adventure about storm chasers and the flying cows in their wake with the upcoming sequel Twisters.
That said, first trailer for Twisters features no familiar faces. Not only do we see no characters played by actors who sadly passed in the interim, such as Bill Paxton’s Bill or Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Rusty, but also missing is Helen Hunt’s protagonist Jo.
In their place is a new cast, primarily Daisy Edgar-Jones (Where the Crawdads Sing) as Kate Cooper and Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) as Tyler Owens. Based on the trailer, the script by Mark L. Smith focuses on the braggart Tyler luring Kate back into the world of stormchasing after an expedition gone wrong.

Filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung broke out with 2020’s “Minari,” which landed multiple Oscar nominations including two for Chung (Best Director and Best Original Screenplay) and Best Picture. (The film won an Oscar for Yuh-Jung Youn in Best Supporting Actress.) Now, four years later, Chung is back and with an expected follow-up: “Twisters,” a sequel to 1996’s blockbuster hit “Twister.”
Universal debuted the first trailer for “Twisters” during Sunday’s Super Bowl, and the spot immediately spiked online interest in Chung’s first studio picture thanks to the way the spot teases the film’s massive set pieces and star appeal courtesy of Glen Powell. “We’ve got twins!”
Those words, delivered with a mixture of terror and excitement, tell viewers all they need to know about the chaos and carnage that a group of storm chasers is about to encounter in “Twisters,” a follow-up to the 1996 box office hit “Twister.” The disaster film aired its first trailer during the Super Bowl. Starring Glen Powell, who plays a self-described “tornado wrangler,” and Daisy Edgar-Jones as a scientist, the film is set for a July 19 release.
Billed as a “new chapter” of the original, the film is directed by Oscar nominee Lee Isaac Chung, known for his film “Minari,” which shared an agricultural setting and little else with “Twisters.” Along with Powell and Edgar-Jones, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Daryl McCormack and Maura Tierney round out the cast.
Powell is channeling a charismatic daredevil in the first look, declaring, “You don’t face your fears. You ride ’em.

All anybody wants to talk about these days is flooding, winter vortexes, and other natural disasters stemming from the ongoing climate crisis. Well, apparently, the tornado from "Twister" got wind of this (I'm sorry) and is back with a vengeance in the newly unveiled Super Bowl trailer for "Twisters."
Neither a direct follow-up to director Jan de Bont's 1996 natural disaster thriller nor a complete reboot of the franchise, "Twisters" follows a new team of storm chasers as they battle destructive cyclones in the present day. Apparently, at one point, "Twister" star Helen Hunt and "Blindspotting" co-writers/co-stars Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal pitched a proper legacy sequel that, according to Hunt, would've focused on "all Black and Brown storm chasers." However, the studio powers that be didn't go for it for "potentially shady" reasons, as Diggs told Business Insider last year.

Nostalgia sometimes takes time to form. The 1996 disaster film “Twister” directed by Jan de Bont, starring Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Jami Gertz, and Cary Elwes, was always a fun lark, but it’s only in recent years it’s been reclaimed as a ’90s classic. And so yeah, enough time passed, and studios suddenly wanted to make a belated sequel. That’s essentially the story of the sequel “Twisters.”

Super Bowl Lviii on Sunday night out of Las Vegas brought more than just excitement for 49ers and Chiefs fans: Universal Pictures debuted the first footage from Lee Isaac Chung’s “Twisters” during the big game. Check it out below.
The Golden Globe-winning director’s first film since “Minari” serves as a follow-up to Jan de Bont’s 1996 original blockbuster about storm chasers in Oklahoma, led by Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt. “Twisters” is written by Mark L. Smith, the scribe behind “The Revenant” (with Alejandro G. Iñárritu) and director George Clooney’s Netflix sci-fi “The Midnight Sky.” Chung’s film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos, with Universal releasing the picture on July 19, 2024 in the United States.
Plans for a “Twisters” follow-up have been in the works for half a decade, with Helen Hunt pitching a sequel about a diverse set of storm chasers that she said the studio rejected.

The first trailer for the stand-alone sequel Twisters, which touched down during Super Bowl Lviii, puts Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos in the middle of the weather-related peril.
Lee Isaac Chung’s action film hits theaters July 19 from Universal Pictures. It is a follow-up to director Jan de Bont’s fondly remembered 1996 flick Twister that starred Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton as two storm chasers who tempt fate while trying to develop a new weather alert system.
Twisters co-stars Kiernan Shipka, David Corenswet, Sasha Lane, Maura Tierney, Katy O’Brian, Brandon Perea, Daryl McCormack, Harry Hadden-Paton, Nik Dodani and Tunde Adebimpe.
Chung (Minari) directs from Mark L. Smith’s script that is based on characters originated by Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin, who wrote the 1996 movie. Patrick Crowley, Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Steven Spielberg serve as producers on Twisters.

Let's talk about "Twisters"! Near the end of 2022, word broke that a potential sequel to "Twister," the 1996 disaster pic starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, was in the works. At one point, Hunt was even floated as a potential director and star of the film. Then, "Top Gun: Maverick" helmer Joseph Kosinski was attached. Eventually, though, Kosinski left the project, and then things started to get interesting and/or confusing.
Kosinski was replaced by an unlikely name: Lee Isaac Chung, director of the devastating indie pic "Minari." Then, Daisy Edgar-Jones joined the cast of the film, titled "Twisters." But when news broke that Edgar-Jones was part of the cast, it came with a surprising bit of new info: the film was no longer a sequel to "Twister." Instead, Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment, the studios behind the pic, were calling it a "new chapter."

Back in 1996, the Twister cast, outside of Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton was largely unknown. At the time, not too many of them were famous. However, in the years since the film, much of that has changed and much of the Twister cast has gone on to fame both in front and behind the camera.
Helen Hunt was arguably the film’s biggest star in the cast back in ’96, but she wasn’t the first choice for the movie. Before the role of Dr. Jo Harding went to her, Jurassic Park standout Laura Dern, Bridget Fonda, and Kate Mulgrew almost wore the good doctor’s white tank top and reinforced mud-stompers. Initially, Tom Hanks eyed the role of Bill Harding but ultimately felt Twister wasn’t the right fit for his brand of character creation. Other actors floated for Bill Harding include Kevin Costner, Michael Keaton, Kurt Russell, Richard Gere,...

Glen Powell is currently showing off his leading man chops opposite Sydney Sweeney in Sony’s romantic-comedy “Anyone But You,” and he’ll keep getting the chance to do so in 2024 with Netflix’s “Hit Man” and Warner Bros.’ “Twisters.” The latter project attempts to turn the 1996 box office hit “Twister” into a new franchise — but don’t call it a reboot, says Powell. There’s a reason Warner Bros. is billing the disaster movie as “a new chapter” of the 1996 original.
“It’s definitely not a reboot,” Powell recently told Vogue about the “Twisters” movie, which has been referred to as a “Twister” sequel, reboot and remake in various press stories since it was first announced in late 2022. “We’re not trying to recreate the story from the first one. It’s a completely original story. There are no characters from the original movie back, so it’s not really a continuation.

Twenty-seven years after the release of the blockbuster disaster film Twister (watch it Here), Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment have finally put a follow-up on the fast track to release – but they’re not calling it a sequel. Scheduled to receive a theatrical release on July 19, 2024, Twisters has been described as a “new chapter” in what is about to become a franchise… and during an interview with Vogue, cast member Glen Powell – who can currently be seen on the big screen in the romantic comedy Anyone but You – confirmed that the film tells a standalone story. But even without any connection to the original film, he believes that it’s something that will be able to connect to everyone around the world.
Powell told Vogue (with thanks to Deadline for sharing the text) that Twisters is “definitely not a reboot. We’re not trying to recreate the story from the first one.

Peter Billingsley is sharing his thoughts on the long-standing debate over the movie Die Hard!
The Bruce Willis-starring action film has long had a debate on whether it is a Christmas movie or not, and even the director of the film has settled it.
Recently, Peter, who starred as Ralphie in the iconic Christmas movie A Christmas Story, shared his thoughts on the debate.
Keep reading to find out what he said…
“Can we have a healthy debate? Can we make the argument to you of why it’s a Christmas movie?” Peter asked Die Hard cinematographer Jan de Bont on a recent episode of his podcast, A Cinematic Christmas Journey.
Jan is a skeptic on the fact if it is a Christmas movie, but Peter held a strong argument, noting that the movie starts and ends with a Christmas song, and there are Santas everywhere.

Stop me if you've heard this one before.
It's a movie about a mad bomber who puts a bomb on a vehicle, and if that vehicle stops it's going to blow up. So the authorities try to figure out who the bomber is, but he's too clever to be captured, while the people in the vehicle do everything in their power to keep the engine running, find the bomb, and defuse it before it blows up.
That's the plot of the Oscar-winning blockbuster "Speed," directed by Jan De Bont and written by Christopher Yost (with an uncredited but substantial rewrite by Joss Whedon). When "Speed" came out in 1994 the premise seemed pretty novel, taking the already tried-and-true premise of "Die Hard on a [Blank]" and setting it on a bus that can't stop plowing through traffic in the middle of the day in Los Angeles, where there is — take it from...

The star of one of the most iconic Christmas films of all time has waded into one of the holiday season’s most divisive annual debates: Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?
Peter Billingsley says yes — and in the season finale episode of his A Cinematic Christmas Journey podcast, which releases Dec. 15, he does his best to convince Die Hard cinematographer Jan de Bont.
“I mean, they didn’t think Die Hard was a Christmas movie. They happened to set it then, but the filmmakers weren’t intending that,” Billingsley explains. Instead, like many classics over the decades, its meaning to fans evolved. “This movie creates its own life, is in the culture and, over time, people discover it. It’s pretty great to see how that life can move in ways that the filmmakers never intended, or even ever imagined.” (Watch an exclusive clip from the episode below.)

Sandra Bullock partially made her career off of action films like Speed and Demolition Man. Although the genre treated her well enough, she wasn’t always sure if it was designed for female actors to thrive in.
Sandra Bullock felt action films did women a disservice in the 2000s Sandra Bullock | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Bullock believed the action genre became even less accommodating to female actors as time went on. Ironically, she herself experienced her breakthrough role opposite Keanu Reeves in Speed. This led to a bit of a career winning streak for Bullock that saw the Oscar-winner return to the genre a couple of times.
In 2002, she starred in the darker action thriller Murder by Numbers. Perhaps what intrigued her the most about the feature was the character she ended up playing. She felt the role was a callback to characters from another time that all but vanished in the new millennium.

Heavy spoilers for "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" to follow.
Doing adaptations of work that have already been adapted into a beloved piece of media is a near-impossible task. How do you stand apart from the version audiences are so familiar with without trying to compete or tamper with that version? How do you do things differently without being unrecognizable? How do you do things similar enough without feeling like a copy?
The best new adaptations are those that reinvent the original material, those that look at what the more popular adaptation skipped or didn't do, and take the chance to explore different aspects of the source material. It's how the "Watchmen" TV show managed to be both a remake, a prequel, and a sequel to the iconic comic. Or how the live-action "One Piece" managed to tell things the anime didn't get to.

Before Keanu Reeves established himself as the action hero powerhouse we all know, the actor had to be convinced to do his own stunts for 1994's "Speed." Director Jan de Bont told The Huffington Post that Reeves thought a stunt involving his character jumping from a moving car to a bus was "way too dangerous," and only agreed to do it after de Bont told him it was "basically like stepping onto an escalator."
The director said that having actors perform stunts was "more realistic" and allowed the audience to "understand why the actor or the character reacts in a certain way." By the time Reeves came to star in 1999's "The Matrix," not only did he not require any convincing to do his own stunts, but he'd basically adopted the view of his "Speed" director as his own guiding principle. Jan de Bont isn’t getting bent out of shape over upcoming “Twister” sequel, titled “Twisters” plural.
The director told Inverse that while he was never contacted to consult on the follow-up film, he knows the Lee Isaac Chung-helmed feature will certainly be a “different approach” from the 1996 blockbuster.
“I want to have somebody else see it first,” de Bont said of potentially watching Chung’s “Twisters,” adding, “It might be a really different approach. That’s the same with [Greta Gerwig] of ‘Barbie.’ Nobody would ever have thought she’d direct that movie and make it so successful.”
De Bont continued of the new studio system, “Don’t forget that the main reason they’re finding younger, inexperienced people is they want to be able to fully control them. They want them to have really good ADs, writers, producers, cinematographers so that they have all the help they can get.

'Twister' director Jan de Bont is adamant the disaster movie "cannot be remade".De Bont helmed the 1996 original starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt about a storm chasers caught up in a tornado which wreaks havoc across Oklahoma and the film is being revived for a sequel called 'Twisters' which is reportedly set after the events of the original but the moviemaker is adamant the use of CGI will make it a very different film.He told Inverse.com: "When things fell from the sky, there were real things falling from a helicopter. If you film a car escaping a tornado in a hail storm, it was real ice that came at us. It’s a movie that cannot be remade … That would never, ever happen again."De Bont added: "Every shot was a fortune. It would take three days to transfer all that information onto film.

Jan de Bont, the director of 1996’s Twister, is giving his thoughts on Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s upcoming sequel.

When Twister took over multiplexes (and drive-ins…) in 1996, its effects blew audiences away, making it one of the most impressive and exhilarating movies of the middle part of the decade. And it’s these visuals — particularly those that are practical — that Twister’s director, Jan de Bont, thinks make it remake-proof.
Speaking with Inverse, Jan de Bont said the practical work in Twister heightens the thrills of the blockbuster. “When things fell from the sky, there were real things falling from a helicopter…If you film a car escaping a tornado in a hail storm, it was real ice that came at us. It’s a movie that cannot be remade…That would never, ever happen again.” And that’s partly why de Bont is so skeptical of the upcoming sequel – uh, we mean “new chapter” – to Twister, saying he’ll have someone else watch Twisters for him when it opens next July.

By 1983, Stephen King had rocketed to the top of the publishing world within a fairly short period of time. His first novel, Carrie, had been published only nine years before but he was already considered the modern master of the horror novel. The adaptations of his work, Brian DePalma’s Carrie (1976), Tobe Hooper’s TV movie Salem’s Lot (1979), and Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980) had only served to feed the fires of his popularity. King had become a cottage industry by the third year of the new decade and the three films based on his work released that year remain among the best connected to his name while exploring some of the greatest issues he grappled with in the early years of his career.

Even better if the train cannot be stopped for some reason, immediately skyrocketing the stakes of the mission while endangering innocent passengers aboard, who have no clue that they're hurtling towards imminent death. Keanu Reeves became the leading man he is today thanks in large part to movies like Speed. But when he was first brought on board to lead the Sandra Bullock feature, he was less than impressed.
