Upon sweeping the four main drama acting categories at the 2021 Emmy Awards, “The Crown” stars Olivia Colman, Josh O’Connor, Gillian Anderson, and Tobias Menzies all joined a special roster of lead or supporting TV academy honorees who were not part of their shows’ original casts. As members of the expansive Netflix series’ second of three distinct ensembles, this quartet and their co-stars were replaced ahead of season five by a new group of actors, some of whom could be added to said exclusive winners club later this year.
According to Gold Derby’s odds, the performer from the sixth and final season of “The Crown” with the best shot at Emmy glory is supporting female frontrunner Elizabeth Debicki. With the writers’ strike finally coming to an end, it strikes me that this may be a good opportunity to consider adjusting the process by which “Hollywood” evaluates what new films and TV shows should get the greenlight. Somehow in the ever-evolving pitch process, we seem to have replaced curiosity, collaboration and civility with a cool “show me what you got” attitude. It’s worth rethinking how to approach working with the creative community moving forward.

Thirty years ago today, on September 21, 1993, at 10/9c, NYPD Blue premiered on ABC.
However, its debut didn't necessarily mean it reached every household.
The controversial series premiered to apocalyptic fanfare, with critics wondering if the series would usher in the end of TV as viewers knew it.
It’s funny the things you remember from your youth. I was at the age where the idea of a series willing to push the envelope, delivering a taste of the big screen on the small, sounded like an excellent idea.
They say that all publicity is good publicity, but people around the country were so concerned about the effect the show may have on the morals of the everyman that 57 local stations around the country refused to air the premiere.
A month later, there were still 45 ABC affiliates who, due to the possibility of coarse language and nudity, were still not airing it.

It’s time for a new episode of the Horror TV Shows We Miss video series, and with this one we’re looking back at a show that only lasted one season of eight episodes: the Stephen King anthology Nightmares and Dreamscapes (get it Here). The show got its name from a King story collection that contained twenty-four stories, so it definitely could have gone on for at least a couple more seasons… especially since the Nightmare and Dreamscapes show didn’t only feature adaptations of stories from the Nightmares and Dreamscapes book. The first and only season of the series also featured adaptations of King stories from his collections Night Shift and Everything’s Eventual. To find out what we thought of the Nightmares and Dreamscapes TV show, check out the video embedded above!

“Overnight!” That’s what Holland Taylor infamously shouted 23 years ago when she won her first career Emmy Award in Best Drama Supporting Actress for playing fan-favorite judge Roberta Kittleson on “The Practice.” (Watch the 1999 flashback video below.) Can the esteemed actress now win an Emmy bookend for her role as English professor Joan Hambling on the Netflix comedy “The Chair”? This time around she’s competing in the red-hot Best Comedy Supporting Actress race.
“The Chair” tells the story of professor colleagues at Pembroke University, led by new English department head Ji-Yoon Kim (Sandra Oh). Despite their age differences, Joan and Ji-Yoon share a friendly rapport with each other at first, though their relationship is put to the test in later episodes. Eventually, Joan is forced to give a vote of no confidence against Ji-Yoon, and the season ends with Joan replacing her as chair.

Jackie Collins, who mastered the art of the Hollywood potboiler, spinning tales of sex and celebrity into an extraordinary literary career, is the subject of a new documentary coming to CNN at the end of the month.
The cable news channel announced today it will premiere Lady Boss: The Jackie Collins Story at 9pm Et and Pt on June 27. The Laura Fairrie-directed film, world premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival next week, takes its title from one of Collins’ novels, featuring perhaps her most famous character, Lucky Santangello. Among her 32 novels, five were built around Lucky; film adaptations were made of several of them, with Kim Delaney playing Lucky in one film and Nicollette Sheridan taking the role in two others.

Exclusive: A new face is headed to Port Charles. Emmy winner Kim Delaney has joined the cast of ABC’s long-running daytime drama series General Hospital. The role marks somewhat of a return to her roots. Delaney began her career on ABC daytime TV drama All My Children as Jenny Gardner.
No word yet on her character or what leads her to Port Charles. It’s common for characters to cross over on soaps on the same networks, but it’s not known if it would be some sort of a reprisal of her Jenny Gardner character. Delaney begins filming on Wednesday, with her first episodes airing in late September or early October.
General Hospital resumed production on July 22, following the industry-wide coronavirus-imposed production shutdown. The drama series ran out of originals back in late May and had been rerunning classic episodes. It returned with new episodes on August 3.

The latest genre opus from Richard Bates Jr., whose previous work includes Excision, Trash Fire and Suburban Gothic, Killer Instinct (formerly known as Tone-Deaf) tells the story of Olive (Amanda Crew), a millennial working in the fashion industry who decides to vacation in the countryside to spend a quiet weekend alone after losing her job and having her last complicated relationship implode. She makes the mistake of renting a country house from a complete stranger online, old-fashioned widower Harvey (Robert Patrick), who – seemingly succumbing to dementia – struggles to hide his pyschopathic tendencies…

“Overnight!” That’s what Holland Taylor infamously shouted 21 years ago when she won her first career Emmy Award for playing fan-favorite judge Roberta Kittleson on “The Practice.” (Watch the 1999 Emmy flashback video above.) Taylor’s victory as Best Drama Supporting Actress was a bit of a shocker that year, especially considering she was a recurring guest star on the ABC legal series competing against series regulars like Lara Flynn Boyle and Camryn Manheim from her own show as well as Kim Delaney (“NYPD Blue”) and Nancy Marchand (“The Sopranos”). Can Taylor now win a bookend trophy for her role as savvy casting director Ellen Kincaid on the Netflix limited series “Hollywood”?
At the Emmy podium, Taylor took a beat as she looked down at the crumpled paper in her hand. “I’m so glad I wrote something,” she declared before adding, “I’m so sorry I can’t see it.

The kids just aren’t the same anymore and it’s slowly making Harvey (Robert Patrick) go insane. His son (Ronnie Gene Blevins’ David) thinks it’s dementia and wants to put him in an assisted living institute, but that’s merely another example of America’s youth forgetting their responsibilities. In his day family took care of itself. When Harvey’s wife died, he did everything to give his son a good life. And this is his reward? Abandonment? He’s sacrificed blood, sweat, tears, and time and now he’s done watching the world devolve around him as though it was all for naught. If Harvey’s to be dismissed by society as a dinosaur longing for a past where “men were men and women knew it,” he’s going to go out banging that drum.

In one of the biggest surprises this past pilot season, ABC’s NYPD Blue reboot did not go to series but was kept in midseason contention with a possibility for redevelopment.
It now appears that particular iteration of NYPD Blue, a sequel to the original Emmy-winning series, is dead. It is not being redeveloped, and the cast was released in June.
But it’s not the end of NYPD Blue‘s comeback at the network, which aired the iconic 1990s cop drama series.
“There are conversations about continuing it but possibly in a different iteration,” ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke told Deadline during TCA on Monday.
The recent NYPD Blue pilot starred newcomer Fabien Frankel and co-starred original cast members Kim Delaney and Bill Brochtrup. The sequel centers on Theo (Frankel), the son of Dennis Franz’s Detective Andy Sipowicz character from the original series, who tries to earn his...

ABC’s NYPD Blue revival did not make it onto the network’s fall schedule — and now we know why.
“The main problem was that the bar was so high,” ABC’s entertainment president, Karey Burke tells TVLine of the “heartbreaking” decision to pass on the pilot. “It was a very good pilot. On any other network, in any other circumstance, that show [likely] gets on the air. For us, we kept the bar really high. “Game of Thrones” has a bunch of Emmy records to its name — most wins by a primetime series, most wins by a series in a single year, most nominations for a drama, most nominations for a drama in a single year, to name a few — but it might add another one in September that it, safe to say, definitely does not want: most Best Drama Supporting Actress nominations without a win.
Thanks to its quadruple bids for Gwendoline Christie, Lena Headey, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams, “Thrones” has topped out at 12 nominations in this category, breaking down to five for Headey, three for Emilia Clarke (now in lead), two for Williams, and one each for Christie and Turner. That’s the second most nominations for a show in drama supporting actress behind “Hill Street Blues,” which bagged 13. But unlike “Hill Street Blues,” which won for Alfre Woodard and Betty Thomas,...

In her SXSW review of Tone-Deaf, Heather Wixson wrote that Richard Bates Jr. "explores the ongoing war between baby boomers and millennials," and following their acquisition of North American rights to Tone-Deaf back in March, Saban Films has now released the movie's first trailer that's filled with violent impulses, pitch-black humor, and a deadly generational divide.
Tone-Deaf is slated for a theatrical release in the Us on August 23rd. Written and directed by Bates Jr., Tone-Deaf stars Robert Patrick, Amanda Crew, Hayley Marie Norman, Johnny Pemberton, Nancy Linehan Charles, AnnaLynne McCord, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Ray Wise, and Kim Delaney.

ABC’s NYPD Blue revival won’t be on the fall schedule — but don’t count it out just yet.
The pilot for the Emmy-winning cop drama’s much-anticipated return will be reshot, our sister site Deadline reports, with an eye towards a possible slot in the Alphabet network’s midseason slate. ABC executives are still enthusiastic about the revival, but feel like it needs a bit more work.
A continuation of the groundbreaking 1993-2005 original series, the NYPD Blue revival stars British newcomer Fabien Frankel as Theo Sipowicz, son of Blue‘s iconic cop Andy Sipowicz, played by Dennis Franz.

ABC’s “NYPD Blue” sequel series will not air this fall, but remains under consideration for midseason, TheWrap has learned.
The police drama was one of the buzziest pilots at the network this season, but it will have to undergo some reshoots and retooling before ABC makes a final verdict later this year.
Written and executive produced by original series writers Matt Olmstead and Nick Wootton, the new drama centers on Andy Sipowicz’s (Dennis Franz in the original 1993 series) son Theo (Fabien Frankel) as he tries to earn his detective shield and work in the 15th squad while investigating his father’s murder.

ABC is not presently moving forward with its “NYPD Blue” series continuation, but the project is not outright dead at the broadcaster.
Sources confirm to Variety that the network remains high on the project but feel it needs to be reworked before it is ready for air. The show may still get a midseason pickup once some tweaks have been made.
ABC gave “NYPD Blue” a pilot production commitment back in October. The new series follows Theo Sipowicz, son of original series main character Andy Sipowicz, as he tries to earn his detective shield and work in the 15th squad while investigating his father’s murder. The pilot stars Fabien Frankel, Alona Tal, Kim Delaney, Bill Brochtrup, Rick Gomez, Ashley Thomas, and Sofia Barclay.

Exclusive: With an iconic title like NYPD Blue, if you do a reboot, you need to nail every aspect of it with no margin for error. For that reason, I hear that ABC’s NYPD Blue pilot will not be going for fall. I hear ABC brass remain high on the project but feel it needs a little more work.

Intergenerational conflict is only likely to get worse as Millennials grasp a problem-filled future for which they already blame baby boomers, while boomers hone their dislike of what many perceive as a generation of brats. No doubt many interesting films will riff on that theme. But their number won’t include “Tone-Deaf,” a horror-comedy caricature in which a malevolent old fogey squares off against an entitled young princess. Too cartoonishly broad to qualify as black comedy, and with no one to root for, this disappointing latest from Richard Bates Jr. isn’t funny, suspenseful or outrageous enough to satisfy genre fans. Others are unlikely to bite when Saban Films does a day-and-date release later this year.
Bates’ script starts with a running gag that elicits just tepid amusement the first time, then keeps resurfacing to diminished returns over the next nearly 90 minutes: We meet our heroine as a child performing a recital,...

Exclusive: Written and directed by Richard Bates, Jr., Tone-Deaf finds Olive (Amanda Crew from Silicon Valley) in a country house she rented from Harvey (Robert Patrick aka T-1000 from Terminator 2: Judgment Day) — a widower who is trying to hide his psychopathic tendencies. In the clip above, we get to see just how creepy he can get.
After losing her job and imploding her latest dysfunctional relationship, millennial Olive leaves the city for a weekend of peace in the country, only to discover the shockingly dark underbelly of rural America. While staying at Harvey’s house, the two generations collide with terrifying results in this home-invasion horror film that is also a darkly comedic critique of the current bizarre cultural and political climate.

Luna Lauren Velez, one of the core cast members of the original 1990s Dick Wolf cop drama New York Undercover, is set to reprise her role as Nina Moreno in the series reboot, which has a pilot order at ABC. The project hails from Wolf, Hand of God creator Ben Watkins and director Anthony Hemingway.
Velez is joining another New York Undercover alum, star Malik Yoba, who will again play J.C. Williams like in the original series. ABC has given a formal pilot order to New York Undercover, a contemporary reboot of Dick Wolf’s 1990s series, from Wolf and Hand of God creator Ben Watkins. Anthony Hemingway has come on board to direct the pilot, produced by Wolf Films, Universal TV where the company is based, and ABC Studios.
New York Undercover, which had a pilot production commitment, joins another ABC pilot that reboots a 1990s New York cop drama in present day, NYPD Blue. Also like NYPD Blue, which is bringing back original cast members Kim Delaney and Bill Brochtrup, the new New York Undercover too is expected to feature cast members from the original series reprising their roles.
Written by Watkins based on a story by Wolf and him, New York Undercover picks up 20 years after the end of the original series that changed the face of TV cop dramas.

Also like NYPD Blue, which is bringing back original cast members Kim Delaney and Bill Brochtrup, the new New York Undercover too is expected to feature cast members from the original series reprising their roles.
