“The Fall Guy” costume designer Sarah Evelyn received the script long before Oscar nominee Emily Blunt was on board to play Jody, an aspiring film director. As Evelyn thumbed through the pages, she was attracted to the idea of how it felt like a classic movie with a prototypical underdog.
In putting Jody’s looks together, Evelyn began looking at ‘80s icons like Lauren Hutton and Brooke Shields. Then, she took stock of some famous female directors’ wardrobes.
“I looked at Kathryn Bigelow and Patty Jenkins, women who direct action. I took a good look at Greta Gerwig because she’s very of the moment,” says Evelyn. Other directors including Agnes Varda also popped into mind, and when Blunt signed on, she too came up with ideas. “She was really well researched and is costume-forward.”

1974 was quite a year for cinema; 50 years later, Netflix (of all places) is celebrating the golden jubilee.
In recognition of the anniversary, the streamer on Wednesday launched a new, dedicated content row (and direct URL link) with the first films being honored under its new “Milestone Movies: The Anniversary Collection” banner. Each of the 14 films came to Netflix this month by way of Warner Bros., Paramount, or Sony — the distributors that license content to Netflix.
The 1974 collection includes “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” “Black Belt Jones,” “Blazing Saddles,” “California Split,” “Chinatown,” “The Conversation,” “Death Wish,” “The Gambler,” “The Great Gatsby,” “It’s Alive,” “The Little Prince,” “The Lords of Flatbush,” “The Parallax View,” and “The Street Fighter” (“Gekitotsu! Satsujin ken”).
Netflix doesn’t plan to stop with disco’s heyday. In April, the streaming service will do the same for films from 1984 (turning 40); July will celebrate 1994 movies (turning 30); and in October...

“John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams,” a docuseries about horrific real-life tales of terror that happened in the seemingly perfect American suburbs, will premiere with all six episodes Oct. 13 on Peacock, the streamer announced Thursday.
Per the press release, “Each episode will delve into the monstrous evil that lurks beneath the surface of friendly suburbia through the lens of one frightful tale. In addition to firsthand accounts, the episodes will include cinematic reenactments, personal archives, and historic town press coverage.”
In the first trailer for the series, we get insight from police, survivors and witnesses about bizarre cases, including the hair-raising line: “In one night, police fielded more than 50 calls about a man in a rabbit suit with a hatchet.”
That episode was inspired by the 1970 reports of “The Bunny Man” in Clifton, Virginia. Often regarded as an urban legend, he was reported to brandish different types of weapons in various sightings.

Paul Schrader has admitted to confusing Emily in Paris with Emily the Criminal.
Emily in Paris is the popular frothy rom-com series on Netflix, which stars Lily Collins as an American living in Paris, juggling work and love. A third season was released earlier this month.
Emily the Criminal was also released earlier this year, but that is as far as the similarities go.
The film is a critically acclaimed crime thriller from director John Patton Ford. It currently has a 94 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Critics have praised Parks and Recreation star Aubrey Plaza for her performance as a student saddled with student debt. Unable to find work, she becomes involved in a credit card scam.
It was unfortunate for Schrader then – the screenwriter most famously behind Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver (1976) – that he confused the two titles.

In Paul Schrader’s 1980 erotic drama feature film “American Gigolo,” Julian Kaye (played by Richard Gere) is a cocky playboy-for-hire who is framed for a murder he didn’t commit. Showtime’s TV adaptation opens with the image of a very different man; 15 years removed and in prison for the crime, Julian (played by Jon Bernthal) is beaten down and broken. There are still remnants of the swanky persona he donned for clients and glossy Los Angeles life he lived — after all, the title theme is set to Blondie’s “Call Me” and features an easy riding Julian in his retro convertible — but Bernthal’s take on the character aims to undress his motivations and psyche, shedding the escort’s designer suits to uncover who Julian is and how he came to be.
“The movie is a great L.A. noir, but we knew nothing about Julian,” executive producer Jonathan Littman told TheWrap.

“American Gigolo,” Showtime’s “present-day reimagining” of Paul Schrader’s 1980 erotic drama of the same name, first began as an idea gestating at Jerry Bruckheimer Television in 2014. According to executive producer Jonathan Littman, the show — which stars Jon Bernthal in the role originated by Richard Gere — once had Jared Leto attached to play the suave, high-end escort.
Not entirely a reboot and certainly not a remake, the series picks up 15 years after Julian Kaye (Bernthal) was framed for a murder he didn’t commit. Following his exoneration, Julian must once navigate the treacherous world of L.A. elites, all the while navigating who betrayed him in the first place.

Showtime got a little bit lucky with The Man Who Fell to Earth. The sci-fi drama took a title that means very little to modern audiences and a story that didn’t really require extending into a new era, but creators Jenny Lumet and Alex Kurtzman had a specific and contemporary tale they wanted to tell — and, in Chiwetel Ejiofor, a fully committed leading man giving a wild, hilarious, soulful central performance.
Perhaps owing to the arbitrary attempt to build around the title of a 1976 film (and a 1963 novel), The Man Who Fell to Earth doesn’t appear to have generated any buzz at all and Ejiofor didn’t even crack the outer edge of the Emmy conversation.

Review: Paul Schrader’s 1980 drama American Gigolo is primarily remembered for two things: serving as the film that launched Richard Gere to stardom and for featuring Blondie’s hit song “Call Me” as its main theme. In the four decades since it premiered, American Gigolo has remained a well-regarded yet underseen film that helped define the look and style of 80s films and culture. No stranger to hot takes, Paul Schrader has a new target in his sight: his own movie.
To be more exact, an upcoming television adaptation for his 1980 movie. Showtime released a trailer earlier this week for American Gigolo, starring Jon Bernthal, Gretchen Mol and Rosie O’Donnell.
The director of the original, starring Richard Gere and Lauren Hutton, took to his Facebook page to lambaste the new adaptation produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, saying he had no involvement with the series and that he won’t be watching it.
“After the Showtime trailer appeared online I’ve been asked if I am involved,” Schrader wrote. “The answer is no.”
Paramount apparently called Schrader years ago fielding interest from the Oscar-nominated director on adapting the original film that centers on a male escort accused of murder.
“I replied that I thought it was a terrible idea–times had changed, internet porn had redefined male sex work,...

The college censorship debate has reached Hollywood. More than 50 prominent artists, writers, and film scholars are supporting the restoration of the names of the Gish sisters, Dorothy and Lillian, to a film theater at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.
The letter accuses the university of making “a scapegoat in a broader political debate.” Among those signing their names are James Earl Jones, Helen Mirren, Martin Scorsese, George Stevens Jr., Bertrand Tavernier, Malcolm McDowell, Lauren Hutton, Joe Dante, and Taylor Hackford. The letter is a response to Bowling Green’s May 3 decision to change the name of the Gish Theater because of Lillian Gish’s acting role in D. W. Griffith’s incendiary 1915 silent film “The Birth of a Nation.”
“The Birth of a Nation” has been called one of the most racist films ever made, and it’s credited with leading to the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan in America.

In the age of Instagram, it may be hard for many to grasp that others might still treasure their privacy, to the point of actually loathing the camera. Beniamino Barrese’s first feature is an interesting exercise in cinema-as-weapon, even if it probably wasn’t originally intended as such. The director is a photographer whose mother, Benedetta Barzini, was an early supermodel, her face all over magazine covers in the 1960s. Today she abhors the invasiveness of being reduced to an image — yet her son keeps sticking that lens in her face.

John Carpenter. Legendary director, writer, composer. The Thing, Escape From New York, Halloween, In the Mouth of Madness, among many other films. Scream Factory, which seems to have cornered the market on John Carpenter Blu-rays and DVDs, recently released his made-for-tv movie Someone's Watching Me! One of his lesser-known works, this was a first-time watch for me, and I'm glad that it has been released via 2K scan for the world to see. The lovely Lauren Hutton stars as Leigh Michaels, a television director who's moved from New York to Los Angeles to escape a particularly creepy guy. Sadly, nearly every guy she comes in contact with in La is even more creepy, pervasive in their come-ons, and whatnot. What's worse? The creepiest guy of them...

As the film's title suggests, John Carpenter's TV movie Someone's Watching Me! follows Leigh (Lauren Hutton), a recent La implant being spied on by a neighbor, but Leigh is no damsel, as she fights back against her stalker. Coming out on August 7th from Scream Factory, the new Blu-ray of Someone's Watching Me! comes with plenty of bonus features (including a new retrospective with Adrienne Barbeau), and we have a look at two high-def clips from the film:
Someone's Watching Me! Blu-ray: "Los Angeles newcomer Leigh Michaels moves into a chic high-rise apartment building. She loves the view. So does the Peeping Tom who lives somewhere in the adjacent tower.
John Carpenter writes and directs this thriller where the breath-catching suspense starts at the moment Leigh is framed in the lens of a telescope. For Leigh, it's the beginning of terrors that escalate from anonymous calls and gifts to...

Hazily atmospheric “Moss” chronicles the 18th birthday of its titular rural youth, to whom the 36 hours or so depicted end up seeming quite eventful — though viewers may find them less so. Daniel Peddle’s indie drama has a handsome hero and attractive photography of the coastal North Carolina locations, but isn’t quite arresting enough in mood or style to sustain a feature so slight in story terms. Still, this is no failure, but a nice slice-of-life miniature that falls a bit short, suggesting its writer-director (whose prior efforts were mostly documentaries) is just another film or two away from more expertly combining a meditative tenor with narrative content.
Pleasure Island, just off North Carolina’s southernmost coast, is home to teenage only child Moss (Mitchell Slaggert) and his father Ray (Billy Ray Suggs). The latter makes a living crafting sculptures from driftwood, a profession his son scoffs at — though...

This is the Pure Movies review of I Feel Pretty, starring Amy Schumer, Michelle Williams, Tom Hopper, Rory Scovel, Adrian Martinez, Emily Ratajkowski, Aidy Bryant, Busy Philipps, Lauren Hutton and Sasheer Zamata, and directed by Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein. The trouble with I Feel Pretty is, whichever way you approach it, chances are you won’t be doing so impartially. Before it had even been released, the controversy surrounding Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein’s movie meant it had garnered a certain notoriety that implicitly provokes reactions. Schumer detractors, body-positivity champions, misogynists - all were given the ammunition to derive whatever they wanted from it prior to actually seeing it, requiring any genuine response to actively have to wrestle with this bias. This review, in and of itself, cannot hope to avoid this pitfall. What it does hope to do, though, is to tune out any preconceived notions of...

I’ll keep it simple: John Carpenter is my favorite director, and has been since I grasped the concept of what a director did. His run from 1976 to 1988 is unparalleled in my opinion; from the eerie siege of Assault on Precinct 13 to They Live’s way too prescient take on governmental oppression, there’s nary a stinker in the bunch. But within this stellar run he made a couple of turns towards the small screen, where he was able to hone his craft under the duress of tight schedules and restrictive content. And since this is a horror column we won’t be talking about the excellent Elvis (1979) but rather his tip of the hat to Hitchcock, Someone’s Watching Me! (1978), a suspenseful tale of voyeurism that’s a more than solid lead in to Halloween.

Chicago – It is a neutered Amy Schumer who is portraying her latest character… a schlumpy woman who lacks the confidence to break out of her shell. It takes the most sitcomish of all actions, the whack on the head, to motivate her that she is one of the most beautiful woman in the world. This empowers the story of “I Feel Pretty.”

This film is going to be a good girlfriend-out-at-the-movies night, because is has a great heart to what women have to put up with in society. As we discussed on Monday, Amy Schumer has come a long way in a short period of time, in terms of her A-list status. This week, she gets another starring vehicle in I Feel Pretty, which plays with Schumer’s persona in an interesting way. With the embargo up, I can say that I found the movie rather charming. Schumer is unafraid to poke fun at herself, but she also manages to make this a film about female confidence. Where things ultimately end up helps make this a bit of popcorn cinema with a worthy message found within its center. Consider me charmed. The film, as I wrote a few days ago, is a new comedy for the actress to sink her teeth into. According to IMDb and Stx Films, this is the plot: “In I Feel Pretty a woman who struggles with feelings of deep insecurity and low self-esteem,...

Amy Schumer’s very R-rated film breakthrough Trainwreck was a hit with critics and audiences looking for the kind of edgy material that made the self-confident and raunchily funny comic a success before Hollywood came calling. Her star vehicle with Goldie Hawn last year, Snatched, was not well received but carried the same R rating one would associate with the Emmy-winning star of Inside Amy Schumer.
But with her latest outing, I Feel Pretty, the humor is defanged and the raunch virtually non-existent in order to get a PG-13 — and a pretty tame PG-13 at that. With this comedy, Schumer attempts to take her admirable positive self-esteem and status as a role model for full-bodied sexiness and flip it on its head. What we are left with, as I say in my video review above, is mostly a one-joke premise spread out to feature length by directors and screenwriters Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein.

With this comedy, Schumer attempts to take her admirable positive self-esteem and status as a role model for full-bodied sexiness and flip it on its head. At the outset of “I Feel Pretty,” Amy Schumer plays a woman who doesn’t believe she’s beautiful. If you agree with her, then the comedian’s high-concept body-image satire — in which a nasty concussion gives her supposedly schlubby character an empowering shot of self-confidence — is liable to be hilarious. If, on the other hand, you accept that real women have curves, then this full-frontal takedown of the fashion industry’s impossible beauty standards actually feels quite tragic, since the on-fire actress comes across as trying way too hard to convince herself of what anyone can plainly see: that she’s amazing.
Unfortunately for many American women — but conceivably good for the movie’s box office chances — contemporary audiences have been so corrupted by heavily airbrushed magazine spreads, surgically enhanced supermodels, and unrealistically proportioned porn stars that they’ll readily accept Schumer as a dowdy fixer-upper. In a fearless move,...

“I Feel Pretty” makes a lot of sense on paper. After becoming America’s foremost chronicler of female self-esteem issues through her Emmy- and Peabody-winning Comedy Central sketch series, Amy Schumer finally has the chance to give her tortured public persona a happy ending.
An average-looking woman (by Hollywood standards) consumed by the desire to be “undeniably pretty” bonks her head, wakes up believing she’s beautiful and learns that her anxieties about her looks kept her from fully embracing life. Confidence, not conventional beauty, was what she needed all along. Like her commitment-phobia rom-com “Trainwreck,” the project is on brand for Schumer, while softening her edges for a broad audience.
So what went so, so wrong?

Written and directed by Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein (first-time helmers who penned “How to Be Single,” “The Vow,” and “He’s Just Not That Into You”), “I Feel Pretty” is an honest-to-God fiasco. Virtually every single aspect of this rigidly unfunny comedy is botched, from the characters to the plot, the themes to the core message.
For a long stretch, Michelle Williams threatens to steal the picture, playing the funniest character she’s played in ages. But ultimately she, too, gets lost in the ineptitude that defines this film.
“I Feel Pretty” was clearly adapted for Schumer’s talents, a sensible move so poorly implemented that it ends up being one of the film’s greatest drawbacks. Schumer’s Renee Bennett is supposed to be an everywoman whose insecurities about her appearance are relatable, if extreme.

She works for Lily LeClaire, an upscale makeup company headed by its namesake founder (Lauren Hutton) and her granddaughter Avery (Williams), but Renee is stuck in a basement outpost, forever looking into the Midtown headquarters from the outside. That is, until a cranial injury during SoulCycle has her convinced that she’s attractive enough to go for a receptionist position at the model-filled main office.
We’re meant to identify with Renee as the woman-next-door gaslighted into thinking she’s an ogre. But Renee is also written as a monstrous egomaniac and a painfully basic bitch, two archetypes that Schumer often plays. The script’s tone-deafness reaches a particularly low point when Renee signs up for a grubby bikini contest at a dank bar on a first date, sticks her finger into a stranger’s mouth — and her good-guy plus-one (Rory Scovel, “The House”) finds her wannabe-stripper antics charming and seductive. Self-love and body acceptance have seldom smelled so much like stale beer.
Renee’s proximity to Avery, a sheltered heiress with a chipmunk voice and a heart of gold leads to the discovery that drugstore-makeup-using Long Island native Renee might be a valuable consultant for Lily LeClaire’s upcoming Target line. Williams masterfully parodies the studied fragility of a certain class of New York women, and Schumer excels in the scenes in which she sells Renee’s self-hatred and her jubilation at being “beautiful.”

But no other character, including Renee’s love interest and her two undifferentiated friends (Aidy Bryant and Busy Philipps), has any coherent personality at all. And Renee is so shambolically and jaggedly written that, by the time her big realization-cum-monologue arrives, all I wanted was for her to stop talking.
Occasionally, a human moment glints among the muddle. A late moment when a character points out how sad it is that Renee’s “wildest dream” is merely to be pretty is fleeting but wise. But such lines are all too rare, and ostensibly hilarious ones, like when Renee gets called “sir” by some random dude, are much more common. And the scenes where Renee, an adult woman, learns that conventionally attractive women have problems too simply feel condescending.
The movie that “I Feel Pretty” should have been deserves to be made. This version, in which a narcissist learns to love herself as is, feels far less necessary.

Hanging with Amy Schumer – a genuine comedy rock star – is always fun, especially when she's the lead writer on the movies and TV shows she appears in (hello, Trainwreck and Inside Amy Schumer). I Feel Pretty is not written by Schumer, though she reportedly had input – and the disconnect shows. The script is the handiwork of Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein (How to Be Single, Never Been Kissed), who are also making a wobbly directorial debut that results in erratic pacing and a litany of mixed messages.
