Mike Judge and his Office Space cast reunited at South by Southwest Film & TV Festival for a panel discussion March 9 sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter about the beloved and influential film — a title that arguably reinvented the workplace comedy for the modern age and popularized the concept of quiet quitting. While the panel discussion tackled several intriguing aspects about the film’s creation and reception (some highlights below), Judge revealed a few extra tidbits at the post-panel reception at Austin’s The Statesman restaurant.
Asked if there was anything he would change about the film (which was famously difficult to get made, with the writer-director fending off a blizzard of studio executive Tps reports, er, notes), Judge offhandedly noted he hasn’t seen his film since before it was released in 1999. Everybody in earshot of this (including star Ron Livingston) looked surprised, given the film initially flopped at the box...

Canadian auteur Atom Egoyan’s 40-year relationship with the Toronto International Film Festival helped put his movies on the map in Hollywood.
But that impressive trajectory out of Toronto of iconic Egoyan dramas like Next of Kin, Family Viewing, The Adjuster, Exotica, The Sweet Hereafter and Guest of Honor — often psychodramas about families shattered by death, loss and betrayal, as parents and children grow apart — got off to an inauspicious start in 1982 with an early short film that screened from a sidewalk outside the Uptown Theatre on Yonge Street.
“It was the ultimate act of chutzpah,” Egoyan recalls of joining fellow rag-tag filmmaker Bruce McDonald, both of whom had shorts rejected by Toronto fest programmers that year, when a feature by a close friend did get an invite.
Feeling a prized Toronto fest berth just beyond their fingertips, years before becoming inescapable fixtures on the TIFF red carpet, Egoyan and...

When director Mike Judge was working on “Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe” (now streaming on Paramount+), it was only fitting he call composer John Frizzell to work on the score. Judge needed the film’s music to reflect the emotional and physical journey the duo would embark on. To accomplish that, Frizzell recorded an epic score with a 69-piece orchestra in Vienna.
In the new film, Beavis and Butt-Head wind up at space camp through “creative sentencing” from a juvenile court judge in 1998. Mistaking a docking simulator for something else. Beavis and Butt-Head excel at it and are asked to join the space shuttle mission in a PR move. After ruining the mission, they are left for dead in space and end up going through a black hole and reemerging back on Earth in 2022, only to discover a very different world — and find themselves considered Buttholes of Interest by the Nsa,...

You don’t have to be a horror aficionado to know that corpses are scary. The lifeless husk of a human being, the rapidly decaying meat suit that housed all our thoughts and memories, is a brutal reminder of our fleeting mortality. So it stands to reason that a film like “The Possession of Hannah Grace,” about a woman working in a morgue where one of the corpses refuses to stay still, would be pretty darned scary. If only in principle.
And yes, that’s true. And only in principle. “The Possession of Hannah Grace” takes a concept so unsettling it’s already been turned into one great movie — “The Autopsy of Jane Doe” — and turns it into a dreary horror thriller, without any of those pesky thrills.
“Hannah Grace” begins with an exorcism scene so mechanical that it plays like a last-minute reshoot. Drab tones, rigid shafts of sunlight...

Mike Judge Presents: Tales From the Tour Bus season 2 trailer gets seriously funky with Rick James.
The funk is its own reward, we hear in the trailer for Mike Judge Presents: Tales From The Tour Bus season 2, which premieres on Showtime on November 2. The guy that brought us Beavis and Butt-Head is giving viewers the chance to dance their way out of their constrictions and prove we are one nation under a groove. The trailer promises the series will change genres, and offers up a little Rick James "Mary Jane" warnings to the mass transit appeal. It appears Arkansas was very serious about keeping heads straight.
After following country music’s true outlaws in its debut, Mike Judge Presents: Tales From The Tour Bus season 2 will slap on the funk. The new season will focus on funk music greats, including James Brown, George Clinton and Bootsy Collins.

Plenty of films have documented the salacious nature of infidelity in the past, whether it be a breezy subplot for a romantic comedy or the center of attention in a more drama-oriented project. For The Loft, Erik Van Looy’s thriller very much falls into the latter category, telling the story of five well-to-do men who think they’ve concocted the ultimate plan of deceit when they pitch in to purchase a sleek penthouse in the middle of the city, providing them with a concrete outlet for extra-martial affairs and the like.
But when the dead body of an unknown woman appears in the twisted apartment, their seemingly bulletproof plan begins to fall away at the seems, and their relationship between one and other is also put to the test.
Starring Dredd‘s Karl Urban along with James Marsden, Wentworth Miller, Eric Stonestreet and Matthias Schoenaerts Van Looy’s thriller...

The most anticipated and polarising film of 2012 is coming to Blu-ray later this year and details of the bonus content have been found on Amazon.fr.
Anyone hoping for a significant number of deleted scenes to fill in the film’s many plot holes will be disappointed as there are only 15 minutes worth. But the most exciting thing on the disc may be the inclusion of the first and final draft of the script by Damon Lindelof and Jon Spaihts.
Prometheus began as a straight Alien prequel written by Jon Spaihts until Damon Lindelof conducted a re-write that became the final product. If they do actually include Spaihts’ original draft, it will be fascinating to see how he originally planned to link it to Alien and if it would have actually made a better film.

Whiteout doesn't trust its audience. Of course this is nothing new for Hollywood - sometimes it's even a necessary tactic to nudge the viewers awake rather than risk them tuning out. Whiteout's greatest weakness, though, is how obvious it makes it (right from the start) that the scriptwriters plainly feel if at any point they ease off on the flash, or the gimmicks or the cheap emotional manipulation anyone still watching will simply cease to care.
Which is a warning sign, because the basic premise ought to be enough to hook more than a few. Adapted from the first of two Whiteout graphic novels by Greg Rucka, the film is set in the Antarctic, where Marshall Carrie Stetko (Kate Beckinsale, Underworld, Underworld: Evolution) has the unenviable job of policing the loneliest place on earth. The discovery of a body out on the ice - the first ever murder at...

“Whiteout” has a good premise and a likeable lead, but it goes rapidly downhill and is ultimately disappointing, thanks to confusing direction, an anti-climactic finale and an ‘Is that it?’ plot that makes less sense the more you think about it.

John Frizzell is doing the score for Legion, an apocalyptic action flick starring Dennis Quaid, Paul Bettany, Kevin Durand, Doug Jones and Kate Walsh. The composer, who is best known for his big orchestral scores for Alien: Resurrection and Dante's Peak as well as the quirkier Office Space, has scored a lot of dark subjects lately, including Evil Angel, The Lodger and 100 Feet. Legion is directed by Scott Charles Stewart and produced by David Lancaster and Michel Litvak for release in January 2010 by Screen Gems. The story is about about a group of people who, after a biblical apocalypse, discover that a young woman is pregnant with the messiah.
