From the Nutcracker to American Psycho, from Mary Poppins to Kurt Vile, our critics pick their must-sees of the festive season
If you wish it could be Christmas every day
Nutcrackers, various
You know it's Christmas in the ballet world by the number of Nutcrackers touring the world's stages. In the UK alone, there are close to a dozen doing the rounds, but the top three remain the Royal Ballet's exquisitely traditional version, the sparky family friendly production by Birmingham Royal Ballet, and English National Ballet's – with the best snow scene of them all. Royal Opera House, London (020-7304 4000), 4 December to 16 January; Birmingham Hippodrome (0844 338 5000), to 12 December; London Coliseum (020-7845 9300), 11 December to 5 January.
Father Christmas
Does Father Christmas use the loo? Does he secretly long for summer? Does he have strong views on the size of chimneys? You bet he does. Raymond Briggs's gorgeous picture book gets a heartwarming makeover for under-sixes.

Marc Roussel is the Canadian director behind various short films. One his latest efforts, Remote (starring: Ron Basch, Sarah Silverthorne, George Komorowski, Peter Racanelli, Julie McCarthy, Nadia Di Carlo, Chris Willis, Ruth Barrett and Don Tjart) is a horror / thriller in which a man communicates via his television set to one of the former tenants of his residency. However, as there conversation progresses, he discovers that she was murdered by a vengeful slasher and it's up to him to try and prevent what happened in the past while in the present. With Remote, Marc Roussel showed that he is capable of directing a competently acted short film with a sleek, professional look on a modest budget. Remote also showed an ability to build and craft suspense through dialogue and the actions that the characters take instead of through editing techniques or gratuitous violence. Perhaps Marc Roussel will carry over these abilities into a feature film?...

The Elusive Man PosterDirectors/writers: Marc Roussel and Mark Sanders.
The Elusive Man is a co-creation from Marc Roussel (Remote) and Mark Sanders (40 Years Younger), which will have run at the Action on Film Int' Film Festival Sunday, July 25th. The film is more comedy than anything else as larger than life characters return from the '40s for wild bemusement (confusion). The result is a hit and miss short of sixteen minutes, with "the culturally devoid" Toronto, likely, the film's backdrop (Elusive).
The film starts off with a loveless marriage involving a mature man, of wealth, with a more beautiful, scheming vixen. A continuity error occurs quickly with the wife's position on the bed changing. However, the action moves ahead quickly with character Blaine (George Komorowski), the husband, getting mugged in his own office. Soon, ears are chopped off, a wife announces her cheating ways, and Blaine is threatened...

The hotly anticipated If Mode folding bike had its American debut at Icff, and Fast Company got a sneak peak.
The buzz behind the bike comes for good reason: It's the first folding bike with a full-sized frame and wheels, which is essential for commutes any longer than a couple miles. It's also the brain child of one of the most innovative bike designers alive, Mark Sanders, who previously designed the Strida and has always been obsessed with enabling easy hybrid commutes--for example, from a bike to a train to a bike then to work. Both the Strida and the If Mode are distributed by Areaware, an excellent purveyor of design. Noel Wiggins, the company's head of product development and one of it's founders, showed us the magic behind how the If Mode folds up:...

You've got to hand it to Mark Sanders--a couple years back, he completely rethought the folding bicycle, producing the Strida, a triangular-framed wonder that looks gimmicky but rides like a dream. Now, he's taken another go at the task. But the new, so-called If Mode looks nothing like the Strida, and it works completely differently.
Usually, bikes have a double pronged fork in the front, for holding the front wheel, and double pronged rear stays, for holding the rear wheel. The Ifmode just has single arms supporting the front and back wheels; these are on opposite sides so that the bike can fold together into one slim package. And when folded up, there's a handle so that you can roll the bike along rather than lugging it, as you usually do with conventional folding bikes. It even fits in a suitcase, and has a rubber, greaseless chain that won't muck up your work pants.
