James Stewart once remarked that if you’re any good as a movie actor then audiences will follow you because what you’re doing is giving them “little moments of time that they’ll never forget.”
That’s generally true. In fact, my moviegoing philosophy is based on the conversation Stewart had with Peter Bogdanovich eons ago that elicited that quote. I seek the little moments that will stay with me, even in bad movies.
It came to mind as Thierry Fremaux hailed Harrison Ford as one of the greatest film actors in screen history during a tribute at the Cannes Film Festival ahead of the world premiere of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
The festival presented a reel of Ford’s greatest hits and, in an instant, I was a teenager again queuing up at the Richmond Odeon to see American Graffiti. A year later it was...

This past Wednesday night, September 20,2017, Rob Cesternino from "Rob Has a Podcast" got to do an exclusive interview with Big Brother host Julie Chen. During their interview, Julie pointed out what she thought were some major flaws by houseguest Paul Abrahamian during the final two speeches and jury questions. She thinks these flaws may have led to his devastating loss. She thinks Paul made some pretty rude faces when Josh was trying to make his points. She also doesn't think Paul showed quite enough remorse to the jury for backstabbing and blindsiding them. She even went as far as to call his behavior bratty! Aside from that, she also spilled a few more details about the upcoming Celebrity Big Brother edition. The interview started off with Rob saying, "We're here in the Big Brother backyard with the legendary, iconic host of Big Brother and soon-to-be Big Brother Celebrity Julie Chen.

Of course Paul Riforati is not Michel Rabagliati — he has a different name, see?
But Rabagliati has now given us about 1200 pages of comics — not all of which have made it into the English language, true — about Riforati and his life. They may all be completely fictional: Paul may just be someone born at about the same time as Rabagliati, living in the same places, having the same jobs, with all of the emotional and story content entirely unconnected to Rabagliati’s life.
Sure. That’s plausible, isn’t it?
We don’t know Rabagliati personally. We almost never know a creator personally. So he could have made it all up.
But I don’t think so. What a creator does is not so much “create,” which implies making something out of whole cloth, but transforming. And the Paul stories are one of the finest examples of life transformed into...

Yesterday, as a sniper shot 13 police officers in Dallas, killing five, Michael Bautista logged onto Facebook Live and began recording. He speaks directly to viewers, calmly narrating the horrors he’s captured on his phone camera. He responded in real time to comments he received on the social network: “Don’t worry, I’m behind a tree… I’m safe, man, don’t worry about it. I appreciate it though, I love y’all.”
Just the day before, Black Lives Matter activists gathered in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to mourn the death of Alton Sterling, who sold CDs outside a convenience stores; his killing was captured by bystanders. And, even as they mourned, many of those activists were watching Diamond Reynolds in St. Paul, Minnesota on Facebook Live as she streamed her nightmarish ordeal with the Roseville County Police Department after an officer shot and killed her boyfriend, Philando Castille, during a routine traffic stop.

Talk about wish fulfillment. Aaron Paul, who starred in AMC's Breaking Bad- considered by many to be one of the finest TV shows ever produced- has had a dream role in mind for quite sometime. You may have heard about the big screen adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower that is inching its way towards production. You have also heard about how it's taken forever for everything to come together, with several studios, writers, directors, and actors coming and going from the ambitious project. What you may not know, is that Paul is something of a super fan, and he's been lobbying for the role of Eddie Dean in the book. A new report claims that Paul may have finally snagged his dream gig.
If true, this would be the end of an odyssey that began back in 2012 when Paul made his intentions very clear:

True Detective, Season 2, Episode 8, “Omega Station”
Written by Nic Pizzolatto
Directed by John Crowley
Airs Sundays at 9pm (Et) on HBO
In the end, so many of the issues emblematic of the season at large caught up to each other to form one long, rough, near-painful season finale of True Detective. The disconnect between each of the four main characters turns into a huge distraction as the finale moves along, whereas previously in the season it was more of an annoying distraction. Ani’s reaction to the news of Paul’s death, so shocked she acts as if someone just punched her in the gut, comes off as the most fake character moment among many similar scenes. She and Ray barely knew Paul and definitely didn’t care enough to start a dialogue about his personal life at any time. The fact that his death would warrant any reaction beyond,...

Orphan Black, Season 3, Episode 6, “Certain Agony of the Battlefield”
Written by Aubrey Nealon
Directed by Helen Shaver
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on BBC America
Given the inconsistency of Orphan Black season three, it was easy to fear last week’s moving installment would be a blip in an otherwise unremarkable season. Thankfully, “Certain Agony of the Battlefield” builds on the strengths of its predecessor, continuing its character-based approach and efforts to tie as many threads as possible into the central narrative of the season, Project Castor’s conflict with Sarah and the rest of Clone Club.
Paul has been a problem character for much of the run of Orphan Black. The creative team are clearly fond of the character, bringing him back time and again when he could have easily been written out, but few of his character pivots have worked. He was Beth’s boyfriend, then her uninformed monitor,...

The Great British Bake Off is at its core a simple show, hosted by two presenters who most people hadn't seen on TV since the '90s, and judged by a burly bloke from the Wirral who spends most of his time talking about bread.
It really shouldn't work. At best, it should be a twee novelty, watched by your nan and anyone who spends their Sundays making jams.
But Bake Off hasn't just become a success over the last five years. It's become a phenomenon.
Shops sell out of doughnuts when they make doughnuts. Shops sell out of jazzy blazers when Mary Berry wears a jazzy blazer. Paul Hollywood can sell out arena-sized venues with adoring fans who want to watch him kneading. And Wednesday nights have become Bake Off nights.
Autumn TV used to be dominated by The X Factor. Monday mornings would be spent discussing the latest 'scandal' or Louis Walsh 'controversy'.

Between Dan Gilroy's "Nightcrawler" and Paul Thomas Anderson's "Inherent Vice," you're going to be seeing a lot of Oscar-winning cinematographer Robert Elswit's work this year. Not only that, but you're going to be seeing a lot of Los Angeles location work in these films that showcases areas and eras of the city unique to the silver screen. When Elswit rang me up from London, where he's currently shooting the fifth "Mission: Impossible" film with director Christopher McQuarrie and star Tom Cruise, I found it a little difficult to keep from going long on all of this. Few DPs have had the opportunity to play with the City of Angels in such specific ways. Much of that is owed to Elswit's collaboration with Anderson, which has sketched the city, particularly the San Fernando Valley, almost as a character in films like "Boogie Nights," "Magnolia" and "Punch Drunk Love.

"Breaking Bad" may be finished, but co-stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul can be seen together again in this fun new clip created for the upcoming Emmy Awards -- where both actors are nominated for the final time for their work on the AMC show. In order to pay for her own private island, Julia Louis-Dreyfus brings her "Seinfeld" Emmy to Barely Legal Pawn, where Cranston and Paul play a pair of scuzzy employees. With reality show cameras trained on them, the duo play dumb about Dreyfus, "Veep" and the Emmys in order to drive down the price; debate the merits of leading roles vs. supporting roles; and sing the praises of Mary Louise Parker and "Weeds." Watch it here: Cranston and Paul may cross paths again on AMC's upcoming "Breaking Bad" spin-off "Better Call Saul." The 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards will air live on Monday, August 25 at 8 p.m. Et on ABC.

So terrible. By the time that first responders arrived on the scene of Paul and Roger Rodas’ horrific car crash on Nov. 30, they were immediately pronounced ‘dead on arrival’ on the 911 audio dispatch recording obtained by TMZ.
Paul Walker may have tried to escape the Porsche that he was trapped in after it crashed in Santa Clarita, Calif., but sadly, he died of traumatic and thermal injuries before firefighters arrived three minutes after a 911 call was made, TMZ reports. According to the recording, they reported that there were “two fatalities” at the crash site — Paul and the driver, Roger Rodas, 38, who died of “multiple traumatic injuries.”

The world has lost two great souls this week: former South African president Nelson Mandela, who died on Dec. 5 at the age of 95, and actor Paul Walker, who tragically died in a fiery car crash at age 40. They will both be missed.
Fans are taking to Twitter to remember the late Nelson Mandela and the late Paul Walker in joint tributes. Sure, Nelson and Paul may seem like an unlikely pairing. The news on Paul Walker’s death just keeps getting more devastating. Paul may have tried to escape the Porsche he was trapped in before it exploded, since video footage of the crash detects an image in the car moving after the accident, according to TMZ.
How terrible. Paul Walker‘s last moments after his car crashed in Santa Clarita, Calif. on Nov. 30 were captured by security cameras across the street and a passerby. The car didn’t show any smoke rising from it immediately after the accident in the security video, suggesting that Paul was burned alive. However, the video taken by a passerby may now reveal that Paul tried to escape the burning vehicle seconds before it burst into flames.

Paul may be gone, but we will still be able to remember him when one of his final movies, ‘Hours,’ is released on Dec. 13. Until then, read on to watch the trailer.
Up until the day he died in a tragic car accident, Paul Walker was doing what he loved — acting. The 40-year-old’s next upcoming movie is called Hours, and it’s set to be released just a couple short weeks after his death on Dec. 13.
Paul Walker’s Upcoming Movie, ‘Hours’
The movie is about a father (played by Paul) who fights to keep his infant daughter alive following the devastation from Hurricane Katrina.
Hours also stars Genesis Rodriguez and with the tagline, “Every second counts,” it promises to be an emotional, intense drama.

In the Emmy race for Best Supporting Drama Actor, there are two past champs (Aaron Paul, Peter Dinklage), two former nominees (Jonathan Banks, Jim Carter) and two men new to the category (Bobby Cannavale, Mandy Patinkin). Paul already won a pair of Emmys for "Breaking Bad" (2010, 2012), tying the record for most wins in this category along with Michael Conrad ("Hill Street Blues"), Larry Drake ("L.A. Law"), Stuart Margolin ("The Rockford Files") and Ray Walston ("Picket Fences"). Paul may be en route to his third thanks to having a curious advantage in this category -- he competes against a costar (Banks). Since Emmy judges view a sample episode submitted by each nominee, that means they see two episodes of "Breaking Bad." Paul benefits from getting extra screen time on Banks' submission and vice versa. In his episode this year, Paul has a great arc as his character Jesse decides to leave t.

Aaron Paul dropped by "The Tonight Show" to promote the upcoming final season of "Breaking Bad." But Jay Leno had another plan up his sleeve. Why not have Aaron Paul rewatch footage of his first-ever acting gig? He got his big break on "Beverly Hills, 90210" -- and he even got to have a kissing scene!
“Won’t thou leave me so unsatisfied?” his character said in a play.
“What satisfaction canst thou have tonight?" the girl replied. And then the two shared a rather short and rather sloppy kiss. As most people are their worst critics, Paul seemed horrified by what he had just seen.
“That was awful," he said. "That was awful. Wow.”
Leno did apologize for airing the vintage video, saying that it probably just cost Paul that Best Supporting Actor Emmy he was up for. But this isn't the first time Leno has gone to the Aaron Paul...

Last week’s episode “Variations Under Domestication” cranked up the insanity that had broken out as a result of Sarah’s (Tatiana Maslany) impersonation of her clone twin Beth (Tatiana Maslany), which then led to Sarah having to impersonate yet another clone in a pinch: Allison (Tatiana Maslany), the seemingly idyllic housewife with the perfect life. But Sarah had already learned the lesson of all that appears perfect on the outside maybe rotten to the core once you peel back someone’s personal life.
For Sarah had already discovered that Beth had a good reason for jumping in front of that train that fateful day when their paths crossed. Beth’s life had begun to close in around her and she took her own life to both escape it and protect those she cared about. Beth had not only found out that she was part of a large cloning experiment,...

Beth had not only found out that she was part of a large cloning experiment,...

Mediaite's own Andrew Kirell stopped by Current TV today to talk with Cenk Uygur about Senator Rand Paul's filibuster and how it successfully dragged the drone strike program back into the public spotlight. While Paul may have been satisfied with the answer provided by Attorney General Eric Holder, Kirell noticed a good amount of wiggle room in Holder's letter for potential future drone strikes in extraordinary circumstances, telling Uygur that executive power should not be so vast as to trust any politician as judge, jury, and executioner.

The Following is one intense ride.
Where the pilot set a graphic and dark tone filled with complex characters, "Chapter Two" dug deeper into the twisted world of Joe Carroll and his deranged contingent of acolytes.
James Purefoy continues to establish his sadistic and smart character well, combining charm, intellect and a persona hell bent on making Ryan take part in his epic masterpiece.
It's crazy to think that most of Joe's scenes include him sitting down, yet his powerful presence is felt with each smile and focused stare. And it's not hard to imagine him as leader of a cult of killers, either.
Joe has clearly induced a sense of god-like mastery for his followers, sweeping up characters like Emma who yearn for that encouragement, that guidance and a feeling of a purpose they can be a part of.

What Is a horror film? The genre is often ghettoized, associated with the lowest common denominator of films and filmmakers. The popular critical perception of horror is one of mindless gore, of endless shots of nubile, nude women being cut to screaming pieces, of stilted acting and cheap cameras, and of audiences who seek only fresh carnage in lieu of actual stories and themes.
This is a load of crap. In fact, horror is perhaps the single most elastic genre in film, or any medium. There is no limit to the things that scare us, and endless ways to represent those fears in a visual medium. Horror can explore our deep-rooted fears of both the internal and external worlds with an immediacy and intimacy that other genres simply can’t.

"Last night I ended up smoking crack." The Sundance drama “Smashed” starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and “Breaking Bad” star Aaron Paul received rave reviews earlier this year, especially for the performances of both lead actors. Our review from Sundance had praise for both thespians: "Winstead's bright, light charm has helped her in a run of films, but here she gets to crack it open to show dark rot underneath. Paul may be best known as "Breaking Bad" co-star Jesse Pinkman, but while Charlie also likes his vices a bit too much, his performance -- loving, gentle, lightly hammered -- is in a very different key than his work there." Now the trailer and a new poster have arrived. Here's the official synopis as well: Kate and Charlie like to have a good time. Their marriage thrives on a shared fondness for music, laughter... and getting smashed. When Kate's partying spirals into hard-core asocial behavior,...

Even though Mitt Romney is running as the presumptive Gop presidential nominee, one candidate from the original crop of colorful figures from last winter is still running. That's right, libertarian folk hero Rep. Ron Paul is technically still in the race, as his supporters will be quick to remind you.
Even though the Paul campaign has stopped actively campaigning, Onion News Network took a look at how they believe Paul may as well be connecting with voters: By riding around in an old-time jalopy, matching his political ideas many deem outlandish with a turn-of-the-century automobile.
According to The Onion, Paul's (fictional, of course) choice of car is a metaphor: "The U.S. government is a lot like his old jalopy -- way too big, overly complex, wasteful and Ron Paul is the only one who knows how to fix it."

Well, it's been quite an intense ride. To be honest, I wasn't sure how Missing was going to end since the finale was shot before the news of the cancellation came about, so I spent much of "The Rain on the Evil and on the Good" holding my breath.
One thing I was pretty sure of, and I was right, was that in the finale Becca would be doing every single thing possible to get her son back. She was ready to go to lengths she hadn't gone to before.
I was so relieved when Becca got Dax on the phone. I've mentioned before that if these two could finally get onto the same page and really trust each other that they could make a lot of headway. It took 10 episodes, but they did.
It's clear that Violet had messed with Dax's head a lot. Things got to a boiling point on this finale.

The final night of competition on the second season of The Voice featured a variety of performances that mostly impressed, which will make things difficult for America over the course of the night. The champion will be crowned Tuesday, but for now, let's try not to take any cheap shots like Christina when we look back at what went down in the finale.
---------------------
Jermaine Paul - Solo - "I Believe I Can Fly"
Throughout this season he has made some of the most clichéd and passé song choice of all time, and this wasn't any different. Everyone is going to have their own reasons for who they think deserves to win The Voice, but for me, that performance was the exact reason Jermaine should not be the champion. He hit a really long note in the middle, and he did the R. Kelly thing near the end where he went up,...

For me the best news produced by the Florida primary was Newt Gingrich's vow to take his fight all the way to the floor of this year's Republican convention. It has been way too long since a national political convention was more than a coronation stage-managed by public relations experts. It seems likely that Mitt Romney will be this year's Gop nominee, although with the party's revolving-door Surges of the Week we can never be sure. It is unlikely to be any of the other remaining candidates, although Ron Paul may use his pledged delegates to win a speaking slot. I'll enjoy that. He has the rare quality of talking turkey, and is funnier than his rivals. He is, in fact, the only candidate in either party who is likely to say something unexpected (on purpose) every time he speaks.
Newt is a seasoned politician and surely doesn't believe...

Leo Records was founded in 1979 by Leo Feigin, a Russian who had emigrated to England. Early in its history, back before the glasnost era, it was most noted for releasing avant-garde Russian jazz at a time when government authorities discouraged the style. As Alexander Alexandrov of Moscow Composers Orchestra says, "What the authorities really hated was free jazz and improvised music – for the reason we loved it, because it was a powerful symbol of individual freedom." Although somehow the Ganelin Trio's first album came out on the official Soviet record label, Melodiya, it was the group's many albums on Leo that earned both the band and Leo world-wide reputations.
Eventually Leo expanded enough that it even had offshoots: Leo Lab for new artists, Golden Years of New Jazz for vintage material. Especially notable from the latter are four superb four-cd sets comprising a series entitled Golden Years of the Soviet...

Is One Tree Hill looking to go out with a bang or a pretty wrapped bow as it ends its 9th season? From all indications from the two-minute teaser which jump-starts this final season, and from the cryptic remarks of the cast and creator, fans better be prepared to break out the Kleenex. The body under a white sheet in the morgue make be the best clue, but given the number of tears shed at a special sneak peek screening of One Tree Hill’s 9th season opener by the cast last week, one of the show’s beloved characters is not going to make it through the season.
It was both a joyful reunion and a night of misty-eyes as the cast of One Tree Hill watched the screening with fans and talked afterwards about some of their favorite memories. In fact, one fan was so choked up by...

It isn't any news that Newt Gingrich isn't a particular fan of his biggest threat in the 2012 race thus far, Rep. Ron Paul. What may be news, however, is that Rep. Paul may overtake President Barack Obama in antipathy Gingrich harbors for him, as he told Wolf Blitzer on CNN today that he could never vote for Rep. Paul, and that, between Rep. Paul and President Obama, he would have a "very hard choice" to make.

There have been more than 400 film and TV adaptations so far, and counting, some brilliant, some memorably awful
The opening credits of BBC1's new three-part adaptation of Great Expectations (27-29 December) show a chrysalis cracking open to reveal a pair of trembling wings. A few seconds later this delicate emergence is replaced on screen by the escaped convict Magwitch (Ray Winstone) erupting from the stagnant waters of the Essex marshes. Covered in blood and slime, he is at once the monster of nightmares and a huge misshapen baby gasping its first breath.
In a single sequence, the director Brian Kirk gets to the heart of Dickens's novel as a fable of rebirth and renewal. Together with Sarah Phelps, the screenwriter, he has created a world in which characters are forever seeking to transform themselves – or each other. A spookily young Miss Havisham (Gillian Anderson), still cocooned in her tatty wedding dress,...

Ron Paul may be down, but he's not out. As the Gop hopefuls start to unravel like a ball of string, with Herman Cain's grope accusers standing tall and Rick Perry's 53 second pause forgetting what he wanted to ban during a debate, Texas Rep. Ron Paul is emerging as a significant factor in the Republican presidential race in Iowa. The AP reports Paul's numbers are stronger and his message is resonating with Iowans. Paul is the most vocally anti-war Gop candidate and he is dead-set against spending in foreign lands. He is described as a libertarian-leaning candidate, and has sharp criticism of government spending and U.S. monetary policy. "The good news is the country has changed in the...

Last week, you mentioned not seeing the kiss between Nolan (Gabriel Mann) and Tyler (Ashton Holmes) on Revenge. Why was it edited out? -- John (via email)
I went right to the source and talked to Mike Kelley, who created and is Executive Producer on Revenge. Of the edited-out kiss he explained, “The kiss wasn’t, for me, as interesting as the intention. Having written Swingtown [the short-lived CBS series about swingers living in the 1970s] and gone through trying to depict and broadcast sexuality so it’s satisfying for myself, the network and the viewers, it’s a really tricky line to toe."
"I’ve always been a fan of seeing which two people go into the bedroom and shut the door than seeing what goes on behind that closed door. I’m not trying to…I don’t have any hang-ups on kissing no matter who is kissing whom.”
Kelley also teased that ‘surprising sexual turns’ are coming for another Revenge character.

[1] Ever since it was revealed that the fifth installment of the Die Hard franchise, A Good Day to Die Hard, would include one new major character in the form of John McClane's son, rumors have been circulating about who might be up for the gig. Now a new report has surfaced claiming that the studio and director John Moore are getting closer to casting the role. They've apparently narrowed down their options to just four actors: Aaron Paul, James Badge Dale, D.J. Cotrona, and (because no casting search is complete without him, apparently) Liam Hemsworth. More details after the jump. The news comes courtesy of Deadline [2], who notes that Fox has not commented on the story. As we recently learned [3], A Good Day to Die Hard will see John McClane (Bruce Willis) trekking to Moscow to convince some cops to let his "apparently wayward" son John McClane Jr., out of prison.

Adorable hipster Zooey Deschanel just gained an adorable hipster love interest on The New Girl. Justin Long (Going the Distance) will recur for three episodes on the new Fox comedy, playing Paul, a music teacher and and a suitor for Deschanel’s character Jess. It seems like a match made in heaven, but Paul may have some heavy competition from Jess’ three male roommates. The show will focus on the recently jilted Jess as she transitions from life in a serious relationship to life in an apartment with three random guys, so Paul will probably have issues if he wants some alone time.

The Republican field has seen, to many observers' surprise, the rise of Rep. Ron Paul as a serious contender, despite lack of media attention. Now a new Gallup poll is showing that Rep. Paul may be the most competitive of the Republicans currently in the race in a general against President Obama. On last night's/this morning's Red Eye, the panel took on the question of whether the polls meant Rep. Paul had a real chance, but came out more strongly anti-polling than pro-either candidate.

Masculin Feminin
Directed by Jean-Luc Godard
France, Sweden, 1966
Godard’s Masculin Feminin is a film on a precipice. Behind the great director are the carefree films of the first part of the decade: Breathless, A Woman is a Woman, Band of Outsiders, Alphaville. In front lie those more politically disparate films La Chinoise, Week End, Tout va bien.
Of course it’s too much of a simplification to place the divide right at 1966, yet with de Gaulle’s defeat of the leftist Mitterand in 1965, the time was ripe for Godard’s conversion to Maoism.
Masculin Feminin is a film framed by two deaths. At the beginning Paul (Jean-Pierre Léaud) and Madeleine (Chantal Goya) witness a lovers’ spat in a café that results in the man being shot to death on the street outside. Neither witness seems particularly concerned. In fact, all Paul can think to do, even after seeing the gun,...

Jazz and country guitarist Les Paul may have died in 2009, but that hasn't stopped Google from honoring the electric guitar pioneer on his 2011 birthday.
June 9 marks the 96th anniversary of Paul's birth. Google decided to commemorate the occasion with one of its more elaborate Doodles to date -- a working electric guitar, whose strings turn into Google's primary colors when scrolled over with a cursor.
You can even hit a button to record and play back your own little ditty.
Paul did not "invent" the solid body electric guitar, but he was the first to popularize it. The Gibson Les Paul, perhaps the most well known electric guitar on the market today, was a collaboration between Paul and Gibson's Ted McCarty. It was invented in 1952.
The guitarist himself enjoyed a long, rich career, which resulted in him being one of only a handful of musicians to have a permanent, stand-alone...

If you're a male aged ten-to-forty, you shouldn't have much trouble finding a movie to watch this weekend. Battle: La, Rango, Hall Pass, The Adjustment Bureau, Unknown, Just Go With It, and Mars Needs Moms are allstill in wide release, but they're getting some company in the form of Limitless, The Lincoln Lawyer, and Paul.
It's not a total sausage fest, Ladies. You still have Red Riding Hood and Beastly. On second thought, have some sausage. I hear the aftertaste of Not-Yet-Summer Dude Fare is slightly weaker than Reimagined-for-Tweener Fairy Tale.
I'm having real trouble deciding on a weekend box office winner. It's might not even be one of the new guys. It could end up being Battle: La or Rango. This is only the second weekend since I've been doing this that the top five seemed up for grabs. (I'd tell you the first if I could remember it.

Chicago – Many films have attempted to portray the unimaginably terrifying experience of being buried alive, from George Sluizer’s bone-chillingly bleak thriller, “The Vanishing,” to Quentin Tarantino’s crowd-pleaser, “Kill Bill Vol. 2.” Yet Rodrigo Cortés’ “Buried” is the first film in cinema history to take place entirely within the rectangular confines of a coffin.
Claustrophobic thrillers such as “Phone Booth” and “127 Hours” utilized cutaways to flashbacks, fantasies and supporting players to break up the monotony of the protagonist’s immobility. But Cortés has the audacity to make his audience feel as trapped as his main character. He refused to compromise his vision in order to make the film more marketable to the mainstream, and the resulting picture is a staggering feat of filmmaking ingenuity and artistic conviction. It’s also a hell of a good thriller.
