- Alex Thomson entered the film industry in 1946. He worked as regular camera operator to Nicolas Roeg in the 1960s before becoming a director of photography in 1968. His career suffered a hiatus in the mid 1970s when he was injured after falling off a camera rostrum on the set of Jesus Christ Superstar (1973). - Alex and Diana's daughter, Chyna Thomson, who worked for many years as her father's assistant, is married to the director Stephen Woolfenden.
- Was a member of the British Society of Cinematographers (BSC). Served as President from 1980 to 1982.
- He was to have been cinematographer on David Lean's adaptation of Joseph Conrad's Nostromo before Lean's death in April 1991 ended the project.
