Anupamaa’ star Rupali Ganguly’s decision to join the Bjp and enter politics makes her the newest addition to a galaxy of women celebrities from Mumbai’s entertainment world who have taken the political plunge in the tradition of Nargis Dutt and Vyjayanthimala Bali. Who are the others still active in politics, albeit with mixed lucky? Here’s a list:
Dipika Chikhlia Topiwala: Best known for playing Sita in Ramanand Sagar’s show ‘Ramayan’, Chikhlia was the first of the then new-generation TV stars to pursue a political career, albeit briefly. She was elected MP from Baroda on a Bjp ticket in 1991.
On the big screen, Chikhlia made her Hindi cinema debut as lead in ‘Sun Meri Laila’, cast opposite Raj Kiran, in 1983, and later acted in films with Rajesh Khanna at a time when he had long ceased to be a superstar.

It’s quite rare for actors to grow up on screen, but Farida Jalal is one such actor who has portrayed an array of characters in the space of the hero’s sister, a mother, and now a grandmother.
While Hollywood has Leonardo DiCaprio, who started his career at the age of 17, India has Rishi Kapoor, Kamal Haasan, Sridevi, and Farida Jalal. All of their careers are textbooks in cinematic longevity.
Farida started her journey at 17 with the film ‘Taqdeer’, a role offered to her by Tarachand Barjatya, grandfather of Sooraj Barjatya. How she was offered her first role has a story of its own, something that rarely happens to artistes. She was a part of the United Film Producers Talent Hunt, which she went on to win, where her co-finalist happened to be the first superstar of Hindi cinema, Rajesh Khanna.

In his over half-a-century-long Hindi film career, he sang more than a thousand songs, but just three serve to demonstrate his position in the industry’s scheme of things – the madcap “Ek Chatur Naar” where Kishore Kumar beats him; the enchanting qawwali “Na to karvaan ki talash hai” where Mohammed Rafi emerges triumphant eventually; and the classical contest “Ketaki gulab juhi”, where he beats Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.
This was part of the misfortune of Prabodh Chandra ‘Manna’ Dey, born on this day (May 1) in 1919 in Calcutta. His classical training, innate talent, and “masculine” voice made him perfect for all shades of songs – romantic (including those for the vintage-aged), folk ballads, philosophical musings, and more, but he was never deemed a top-notch singer.
A nephew of gifted blind singer-composer Krishna Chandra Dey, who paved his way into music and films, Manna Dey’s forte was challenging, classical-based songs, especially those that his contemporaries considered difficult,...

Mumbai, March 31 (Ians) It is election time and in this season political parties develop an extra interest in film stars. On their part, stars reciprocate. The choice is not automatic and there are factors that qualify them as probables.
Films and politics have been poles apart and the use politicians had for film stars was to present them at political rallies in order to attract crowds. While mainstream parties were yet to familiarise themselves with this process of using film stars for campaigning, it mostly happened at the local level.
In Mumbai, some party candidates were bound to know an actor or somebody who did. Politicians in other cities used cash, contacts or favours.
In the old days in Uttar Pradesh, for instance, a star was repaid by exempting his films from entertainment tax. Taxes then were not standardised as they are today. The entertainment tax, being a state subject,...

Baazigar is considered one of Shah Rukh Khan’s best movies and performances. At the beginning of his career, the actor agreed to do a negative role, which many big stars avoid doing even now. The Abbas-Mustan directorial also stars Kajol and Shilpa Shetty. The romantic thriller is based on the Hollywood film, A Kiss Before Dying (1991). But did you know that Anil Kapoor was the first choice to play Ajay Sharma/ Vicky Malhotra?
Yes, you read it right! Abbas-Mustan wanted the Fighter actor to play the main lead in their 1993 directorial. They even discussed the project with Kapoor, who rejected it, saying it’s too “risky”. The director duo revealed the same to Komal Nahta in the past.
In an old interview, the Baazigar directors said, “When we were ready with the story of Baazigar, we first went to Anil Kapoor.

Rajesh Khanna Once Confessed How He Was Jealous Of Amitabh Bachchan. (Photo Credit – IMDb)
It was just one film in the year 1971 that sealed the fate of two superstars of this country. A film that starred two superstars and a film that marked the start of the decline of one’s stardom and the rise of the other’s stardom. The film was Anand and the stars were Rajesh Khanna & Amitabh Bachchan!
When Amitabh Bachchan was climbing the ladder of success, he signed Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Anand. During the making of the film, many people warned the Aradhna superstar to be very alert to the man who was about to turn into an angry young man.
Rajesh Khanna did not pay heed to anyone’s warnings, but later, Anand saw the rise and rise of Amitabh Bachchan despite playing a quiet doctor and Khanna receiving much love for his role as a dying cancer patient.

“The Queen of My Dreams” has been on its way to the big screen for more than ten years. Though not originally planned as a feature, writer and director Fawzia Mirza originally saw the story through life as both a short film and a stage play, based on her own experiences as a queer Pakistani-Canadian woman. The title is a literal translation of “Meri Sapno Ki Rani,” the wildly popular Hindi song from 1969’s “Aradhana.”
The film opens with narration from Azra (Amrit Kaur), Mirza’s self-insert, who has a complicated relationship with mother Mariam (Nimra Bucha) — but the two share an uncomplicated, undying love for the movie “Aradhana” starring Sharmila Tagore and Rajesh Khanna. When Azra’s father Hassan (Hamza Haq) suffers a fatal heart attack, Azra must join the family in Pakistan to mourn his passing — and salvage a rocky relationship with the only parent she has left.

A narrative trifurcated across decades and generations, Fawzia Mizra’s “The Queen of My Dreams” follows a young Pakistani Canadian coming to terms with her upbringing. It hits all the familiar beats of a first-generation South Asian story and, despite its novel queer bent and tongue-in-cheek casting, it does little to separate itself, thematically or stylistically, from a now repetitive form of “third culture” storytelling.
The sound of a slide projector yanks the film’s opening images into place, as though it were a slideshow of family memories. The year is 1999. The place is Toronto. Azra is a wannabe actress — a profession of which her mother disapproves. She lives with her white, female “roommate” (her parents are none the wiser), to whom she excitedly shows the 1969 Hindi classic “Aradhana” starring Sharmila Tagore. “The Queen of My Dreams” is an English translation of the title of that movie’s most famous song,...

I noticed something curious. Director Siddharth Anand of the film ‘Fighter’ says that his film flopped because 90% of Indian moviegoers have never sat in an airplane! I was amazed, amused, but, most of all, I was worried. Worried, because this is how the maker of a Rs 400-crore film thinks!
My mind instantly went back to Shakti Samanta’s ‘An Evening In Paris’ (1967), where a bikini-clad Sharmila Tagore is sea skiing as Shammi Kapoor courts her hanging from a helicopter. After learning what Malhotra had said to explain why his film had failed, I wondered how many people hang from a helicopter to court a woman! I don’t know anybody who has done such a thing and still, ‘An Evening In Paris’ was a major hit! I can cite hundreds of such examples.
Of course, the audience must first identify with the subject of a film. The other factor...

Music composer Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma, of Laxmikant-Pyarelal fame, has been honoured with the prestigious Padma Bhushan, not only as a celebration of his musical prowess, but also in acknowledgment of his role in defining the golden era of Hindi film music.
The octogenarian learnt the basics of music from his father, the renowned trumpeteer of his time, Ramprasad ‘Babaji’ Sharma. He then aced the violin under the guidance of the Goan musician Anthony Gonsalves, whom he went on to immortalise in the song ‘My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves’, which was picturised on Amitabh Bachchan (who also contributed to the vocals) in the 1977 film ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’.
Pyarelal teamed up with Laxmikant Kudalkar and they worked in more than 750 Hindi films between 1963 to 1998. They collaborated with the biggest names of the industry, including Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Shakti Samanta, Manmohan Desai and Yash Chopra.

Fighter Box Office To Avenge Every Single Indian Air Force Disaster Film In Bollywood ( Photo Credit – Viacom18 Studios / YouTube )
Hrithik Roshan plays an Indian Air Force Officer in the upcoming film Fighter. Helmed by Siddharth Anand, the film is all set to release on January 25, 2024. The film is about a group of Iaf fighters who come together for a mission against Pakistan. It also stars Deepika Padukone, Karan Singh Grover, Akshay Oberoi, and Sanjeeda Shaikh as Indian Air Force officers.
After watching the cast look terrific in uniforms, we thought we would research a bit about men and women in uniform on-screen. To our surprise, while there are plenty of films made on the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, and Navy remain much unexplored on-screen.
Quite a few of the films have Iaf as the backdrop, while there are rare films made on the Indian Air Force that offer a...

Mumtaz Reveals No Actor ‘Wanted Work With Her,’ Dilip Kumar Too Had Raised Concerns Before Doing ‘Ram Aur Shyam’ ( Photo Credit – Instagram; IMDb )
We often come across interviews of yesteryear stars who have often spoken about the struggles they have faced in the past. Just recently, we saw two veteran actresses, Neetu Kapoor and Zeenat Aman, come on Koffee With Karan and spill the beans on the working patterns of the Bollywood industry in that era and how drastically it has changed now. Recently, another veteran actress, Mumtaz, opened up about the same and revealed how she was labeled a ‘B-Grade’ actress for doing small roles.
The diva, who entered the industry as a child artist in 1958 at the age of 11, starred in a number of films. But it was only during ‘Do Raaste’ that she gained massive recognition and became one of the most sought-after actresses in the Hindi Film Industry.

Salman Khan Once Called Filmfare Awards & Other Shows Stupid (Picture Credit: IMDb)
Salman Khan has been a man of spoken words, and his words have often left people wondering, ‘Did he just say that?’ We came across one more such statement, which made us sit in disbelief about Bhai, who can literally say anything and everything to anyone and everyone.
Now, we all know that the Tiger 3 superstar is a regular at award functions. In fact, he even hosts many of them. He received his first Filmfare award for Best Debut in the year 1989 for Maine Pyar Kiya. It took him 10 years to receive his second Filmfare Award in 1999 for Kuch Kuch Hota Hai!
However, the actor once decided to go all out against the award ceremony and reveal all that happens behind the stage. Dissing the awards, Salman Khan said, “People who don’t have confidence in themselves want awards.

Merry Christmas
Starring Katrina Kaif, Vijay Sethupathi
Directed by Sriram Raghavan
Yadhoom is the home-made whiskey that Albert’s uncle, played by Tinu Anand , recommends as the spirit of the season: create your own yadhoom and have a good time in life.
This is what Sriram Raghavan does. His yadhoom may not match with yours. But heck, life is what you make of it. Merry Christmas is not a merry film. Come to think of it, it is not even Christmassy. Albert (Vijay Sethupathi) and Maria (Katrina Kaif) are two wistful souls who collide on Christmas eve in neon-lit Bombay (this is when Mumbai was Bombay) in the 1970s when , Rajesh Khanna, Shakti Samanta’s Aradhana and Kati Patang and R D Burman ruled the charts.

Content is king is the belief the film industry has thrived upon all along. An appropriate casting as per the needs of the story completed the basics of making a film. A director craved for a good performer rather than a star and did not chase a star just for the sake of it.
It was because of content that films with no star value such as ‘Saraswatichandra’ (Manish), ‘Kora Kagaz’, ‘Dosti’ (Sudhir and Sushil) and ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ (Salman Khan) went on to become hits. These are just a few examples.
Rajesh Khanna had delivered many flops before he could give his first hit and so had Amitabh Bachchan. When a good script that matched their talent and persona came up, it made them a star.
When a star is born thanks to a few huge hits, everybody wants to cast him and this phenomenon causes the downfall of a star.

New Delhi, Oct 15 (Ians) The world has stopped taking film critics and their reviews seriously, but a filmmaker in Kerala, Mubeen Rauf, director of the film ‘Aromalinte Adyyathe Pranayam’, and the Kerala High Court think otherwise.
It is no secret that every actor and, at times, a filmmaker tries to get a positive review for his film. There used to be a time when an actor would dispatch his personal PR man with an envelope to each and every critic. All that they wanted was that the heading should be dedicated to him along with the picture that the review carried.
Something like ‘Rajesh Khanna steals the show’. The heroine’s PR man would follow soon with, probably, a heavier envelope, demanding that the headline be like ‘Heroine steals the show’!
Rather a tough call for a critic!
This was a myth the film industry lived with for a long...

New Delhi, Sep 26 (Ians) One of Hindi films’ most talented and versatile actresses – and still going strong, the exquisite and enchanting Waheeda Rehman, who caps a remarkable stint with the prestigious Dadasahab Phalke Award, carved out a niche with confident renditions of unconventional roles, including some very bold for the era – and could have spelled doom to her career.
Starting with Telugu and Tamil films in 1955 before switching over to Hindi cinema the following year, she did the usual roles expected of Hindi film actresses but also went on to play a prostitute, a gangster’s moll, a nautanki actress, a woman who walks out of a marriage without regrets, et al – but with such innate grace that she has always been a byword for refined sensibility.
Born in fairly comfortable circumstances – her father was a Deputy Commissioner – on February 3, 1939 in what was Chingalpet town of the Madras Presidency, Waheeda...

A lot of film stars made handsome money even when the studio system was on when they were on the roster of one of the studios in Mumbai which made films at regular intervals. The studios engaged actors on a monthly pay and the stars, thus, had a reason to feel secure. If a star was becoming popular, he/she gained more.
All one needed was talent and education qualifications counted for little as far as what the stars earned. They made many times more than what a white-collar graduate earned working for some or the other company.
Then came the era of actors charging per film. The cost of filmmaking was moving from thousands to lakhs. The first thing that a successful star did when a regular income started was to invest in a house. And, the next acquisition was, of course, a car. Chevrolet and Impala were the...

Social media, especially X, is abuzz with pro and anti ‘Jawan’ posts. The pro ‘Jawan’ and Shah Rukh Khan lobby is very strong, in numbers as well as conviction. It is well organised. The anti ‘Jawan’ and Shah Rukh Khan members may be few in number, but they are keeping the entire Khan lobby working overtime. After all, defence is a tough job and needs patience.
The offenders are convinced that Shah Rukh Khan (Srk) manipulated the box office figures of ‘Pathaan’. Not everybody was convinced with the business figures circulated for ‘Pathaan’. I don’t know why it should matter to anybody.
People don’t follow a film’s collection figures and then decide to watch a film. So, a studio or a maker may release whatever figures he can afford or wish to; it is just an exercise in personal gratification. If certain stars do it, they may...

By celebrating her 90th birthday with a live performance in Dubai on September 8, Asha Bhosle will be proving yet again that she not only has a tremendous zest for life, but also an ebullience that has enabled her to rule Hindi film music across many genres, from classical to cabaret numbers, sing for generations of composers and audiences, and bring home every award that counts, barring the Bharat Ratna, which she rightfully deserves.
I first met Asha Bhosle after the release of ‘Hare Krishna Hare Ram’ (1971), where I was assisting Dev Anand, and met her last as recently as in 2019 at a music festival in Jaipur, where she was surrounded by friends and admirers, and yet she mentioned to all those present how long our association has been.
I have had the good fortune of writing the lyrics of two of her ageless hit numbers — ‘Jab Chhaye Mera Jadoo’ (‘Lootmaar’; 1980) and ‘Suniye,...
