It's a drizzly Thursday afternoon in New York City, and Nicki Nicole has spent most of her day answering back-to-back interview questions from journalists. For someone who just concluded a tour between Latin America and Europe, not to mention nine sold-out shows at the Movistar Arena in Buenos Aires, where more than 100,000 fans were in attendance, you'd think she was ready to slow down. But hours before our conversation, she announced that her first US headlining tour would kick off next month in Mexico City. You can see the tunnel vision in her green eyes. Her fans, who have been by her side since day one, are what motivate her to keep going.

For her “unofficial” 2009 John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy, Sam Taylor-Johnson had so little music to work with that the opening chord of “Hard Day’s Night” pretty much had to carry the whole movie. You might think that history would repeat for Back to Black, the short but fast-lived story of Amy Winehouse, who rose to international fame in her teens and never saw 28, never mind 30. Surprisingly, the Winehouse estate is all in, and although one might argue that the singer’s trainwreck notoriety has been slightly snow-washed to protect the living, there’s still a surprisingly hard edge here, in a rare film that gives rock ’n’ roll agency to a woman for once, like a reverse-angle Sid & Nancy.
In a way, any music biopic is off to a bad start, since there’s always going to be the curse of symmetry: everything must square with what we already know,...

This is already shaping up to be an interesting year for Best New Artist at the Grammys. The category might lack a clear frontrunner so far, as it is early in the year, but we do have some serious contenders who might pick up more steam closer to voting time this fall. Plus, an open field might make it even more interesting, unlike years where the winner was rather obvious like when Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish prevailed.
TikTok breakout Benson Boone might be positioning himself as the one to beat. He had already achieved some recognition before 2024 with his viral tracks “In the Stars” and “Ghost Town,” the latter of which charted on the Billboard Hot 100. Can you guess who won the first Grammy for Best New Artist? It was actually none other than Bobby Darin who claimed the prize at the second Grammy ceremony in 1959. Let’s take a look back at ever winner of this prize, including the year when the award was vacated in 1989, the only time that has happened at the Grammys. Note that no award was given in this category in 1967 and no reason has been given as to why.
Of all the categories that are currently handed out at the Grammy Awards, the Best New Artist honor is one that truly stands out from all the others. One of the reasons for this is that it’s the only category that is awarded for an artist’s cumulative work and doesn’t cite a specific album, composition, or performance. The other is because, theoretically, an artist should only be eligible in this category once.

The albums that have won Album of the Year have encompassed all of these areas. They have ranged from some of the most revered classics, from “Sgt. Pepper” by The Beatles and “Thriller” by Michael Jackson, to the biggest achievements in recent years, from...

The biggest Grammy Award of the night is Album of the Year, meant to honor complete pieces of work that defined the music scene and impacted the culture throughout the eligibility period. The award has gone to some of the most influential records of all time, including The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and Adele’s “21.” While some years are more uncertain than others, this year the category seems to be a two-horse race, although a few other players might sneak their way through as well.
The frontrunners here are Taylor Swift’s “Midnights” and Sza’s “Sos.” Both records are massive commercial successes, finishing 2023 as the second and third biggest albums of the year, respectively. Both have also managed to be career peaks for these already uber-popular stars.

Reggie Wells, who served as Oprah Winfrey’s personal makeup artist for nearly three decades, died Monday of natural causes in his hometown of Baltimore, The Baltimore Banner reported. He was 76.
Wells’ clients also included Michelle Obama, Beyoncé, Aretha Franklin, Joan Rivers, Whitney Houston, Halle Berry, Diahann Carroll, Robin Givens and Lauryn Hill.
Wells received five Daytime Emmy nominations for his work on The Oprah Winfrey Show, winning in 1995. He also appeared on her talk show and traveled all around the world with her, including to South Africa when she opened a school for girls.
“Reggie Wells was an artist who used his palette of talent to create beauty no matter the canvas,” Winfrey said in a statement. “For many years he was my makeup artist. He called me and everyone he considered a friend ‘Mary.’ He always made me feel beautiful. Ooh my, how we’d laugh and laugh during the process.

Jack Antonoff swung by Late Night With Seth Meyers Thursday to perform a new Bleachers song and chat about making classics and hits with Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey.
For their performance, Bleachers performed “Alma Mater,” the recently-released single that moves between a hazy, torrid dreamscape and a noir-ish surge of late-night sax glory. Del Rey, unfortunately, was not on hand to provide backing vocals (as she does on the studio recording), but Antonoff did have a sample machine loaded up with some of her best lines to help make her presence known.

Lauryn Hill has postponed all but one of her remaining 2023 tour dates due to what she describes as a battle with “serious vocal strain” and fears over the side effects of prolonged use of the medicinal steroid Prednisone.
In an Instagram post today, Hill wrote, “As many of you may know, I’ve been battling serious vocal strain for the past month. I made it through each show by taking prescribed prednisone, but this can be detrimental to the body when taken in large amounts over long periods of time. In order to prevent any long term negative affect on my voice and my body, I need to take time off to allow for real vocal recovery so that I can discontinue the medication completely.”
Hill said that, with the exception of her Philadelphia concert on Nov. 25, all of the remaining 2023 tour dates will be postponed until next year.

Ms. Lauryn Hill has postponed the bulk of the remaining dates on her 2023 tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of her debut album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, due to vocal strain.
Hill announced the postponement on social media, explaining that she has been “battling serious vocal strain for the past month.” To recover, Hill will reschedule her remaining 2023 dates to early 2024 — except for her November 25th concert in Philadelphia, which has already been moved once. Though Hill didn’t give any specific dates, she did say the rescheduled concerts would include some additional cities and overseas shows.
The North American leg of “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 25th Anniversary Tour” kicked off on October 17th in Newark, New Jersey, with Hill’s reunited group Fugees serving as co-headliners. The unspoken contract between Lauryn Hill and the fans who attend her live shows maintains that the singer will show up when she’s ready, and they will either wait patiently or plan to arrive late, too. Currently on the road for an anniversary tour celebrating 25 years of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, the musician provided more context to her understanding of this contract, telling the audience at her Los Angeles show: “You’re saying ‘She’s late. She’s late a lot.’ Yo, y’all lucky I make it on this … stage every night.

Jharrel Jerome isn't hiding behind self-doubt anymore. It might be hard to believe the 26-year-old - the youngest to ever win an Emmy for outstanding lead actor in a limited series or movie - is anything less than confident, given the praise he's earned for his buzzy onscreen performances, which include the Oscar-winning "Moonlight" and critically acclaimed "When They See Us" miniseries. But the Bronx native has been admittedly hesitant to introduce his other talent: rapping. But now, he tells Popsugar, "I'm ready to move with confidence."
"I think it was definitely me telling myself as loud as I can that I really do enjoy this and that I want this at a young, young age."
Up until 2020, Jerome largely kept his rap ambitions under wraps, though he's been quietly sharing music on SoundCloud since 2016. The "I'm a Virgo" star built his Hollywood reputation with compelling TV and movie roles,...

Drake has shared the latest installment in his Am/Pm freestyle series, “8Am in Charlotte,” on the eve of his new album, For All the Dogs. The track features thinly veiled references to his apparently revived beef with Kanye West. Watch the video, co-starring Drake’s son Adonis, below.
“8Am in Charlotte” opens with a skit in which Adonis breaks down his own drawing and dubs his father as “Daddy Goat” before the soulful production from Conductor Williams kicks in and Drake raps about his usual topics like the pressures of fame and chart dominance, while referencing pop culture figures like Jordan Peele, Lauryn Hill, Shania Twain, and Michael Jackson. On the third verse, he turns up the pressure on unnamed foes.

Central Park’s Great Lawn has been closed by officials due to damages caused by concert-goers last month at Global Citizen Festival. According to the Central Park Conservancy, the beloved section of the park won’t be open again until April 2024, after repairs can be made.
Held on September 23rd and headlined by Lauryn Hill, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Jungkook, this year’s Global Citizen Festival was subject to a large amount of rain, which impacted turnout, but also resulted in an inch of rain water flooding the park. That, combined with the heavy equipment used for the production and the 30,000 fans who decided to brave the weather, made for a perfect storm (pun intended).
Now, according to The New York Times, officials are estimating that up to a third of the Great Lawn is “fully destroyed,” with some folks — like New York Councilwoman Gale Brewer — claiming that...

Central Park’s 12-acre Great Lawn will be closed to the public until April due to extensive damage caused during last month’s rain-soaked Global Citizen Festival, the Central Park Conservancy said today.
“The Central Park Conservancy is very disappointed that the iconic Great Lawn is now closed and unavailable for New Yorkers to enjoy this fall,” the Conservancy said in a statement released today. “The use of heavy equipment and intense foot traffic in the saturated conditions from the September 23 concert damaged a large portion of the lawn and fully destroyed a third of it. Our team is now working to restore the lawn, hopefully in time to reopen this spring.”
Attended by about 30,000 people – about half the usual audience size due to heavy rain – the annual concert is a major fundraising event for Global Citizen, the anti-poverty organization. This year’s concert included performances by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Lauryn Hill,...
