A business mogul finds himself on the cusp of bankruptcy just after his big, glamorous 60th birthday party. Adapted from Tom Wolfe’s much-celebrated novel, Regina King’s limited series A Man in Full is a bummer. Set in Atlanta, Georgia, the series never takes itself seriously until the closing moments. The 60-minute man, Atlanta’s favorite boy Charlie Croker, plays a toned-down Donald Trump, but the character still holds some morals compared to the former President. In this article, we’re discussing the highlights of A Man in Full.

Why is Charlie getting the stick from the bank?

On this week’s “Screen Talk,” co-hosts Ryan Lattanzio and Anne Thompson review new releases “The Fall Guy” (Universal), “Wildcat” (Oscilloscope), and “I Saw the TV Glow” (A24). While they both enjoyed David Leitch’s latest stunt-fest, starring Ryan Gosling as a movie stuntman and Emily Blunt as his director and ex-girlfriend, Thompson said the movie set in Sydney was well-mounted but a tad shallow and cartoony, while Lattanzio said it was not a challenging movie in any way, and that a series of showdowns and battles pile on at the end. Box office projections are all over the map, from $25-50 million. Upbeat word of mouth should carry the day.
Despite lukewarm Sundance reactions to Ethan Hawke’s “Wildcat” — which the actor-director-writer (“Blaze”) crafted specifically for his daughter, actress Maya Hawke, who plays Southern writer Flannery O’Connor — both Lattanzio and Thompson admired the movie,...

Back when he was finishing “Dumb and Dumber To” in 2014, Jeff Daniels was ready to leave show business. “I’m done,” he told Jim Carrey. “You can’t stop man,” Carrey said. “You can’t, you’re creative, you’re going to create something, you’ve got to keep creating. That’s what we do!”
These days, Carrey’s off in Hawaii painting. And when Daniels is not acting, he’s writing songs and plays, which he mounts at his Michigan hometown’s Purple Rose Theatre Company. “It’s what keeps me going,” Daniels told me on Zoom. “It keeps me alive. It’s what I’m supposed to do. It’s helped me between the phone calls for the acting jobs. Because you can go insane staring at that phone. They’ll call you when they need you. “A Man in Full,” the sprawling Tom Wolfe novel now adapted by screenwriter David E. Kelley into a limited series for Netflix, centers on a protagonist who, for all his resources, can’t bend the world to his will. Over six episodes, the show finds itself in a similar bind. “A Man in Full” boasts an all-star cast, led by Jeff Daniels as Atlanta real estate tycoon Charlie Croker; an Oscar-winning multi-hyphenate behind the camera; and a dense lode of source material. But the show ends up far less than the sum of its parts, an oddly generic and muted take on a larger-than-life American story.
Wolfe spent the bulk of his career as a longform journalist before turning to fiction. His first novel, “Bonfire of the Vanities,” was a social satire of 1980s New York that helped define the Wall Street boom’s impact on culture. For his sophomore effort,...

A Man in Full is highly entertaining, which should be no surprise. The series is an adaptation from David E. Kelley, the brilliant mind behind Ally McBeal, Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer, and HBO’s Big Little Lies. Kelley has been in the thick of television since the days of Doogie Howser, M.D.
Kelley brings his signature brand of strong characters, a blend of genres, and sharp dialogue that you need to figure out just how deep the cut goes. The bench of actors is deep (and the likes of directors Regina King and Thomas Schlamme) with stars Jeff Daniels and Bill Camp, who turn the whip-smart and clever wordplay into instantly memorable lines that stay with the viewer long after the episode is over.
You wish A Man in Full had taken the time to develop the highly ambitious source material into something that better reflects modern societal dilemmas.

Jeff Daniels and Diane Lane deliver stellar performances in Netflix‘s adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s “A Man in Full,” but despite their brilliance, the series struggles to find its footing amidst a tangled web of drama and Southern-fried charm.
In this sweeping six-episode saga, Daniels portrays the pugnacious Atlanta real estate tycoon Charlie Croker, whose empire teeters on the brink of collapse with debts soaring into the billions. Lane shines as Martha, Croker’s razor-sharp ex-wife, adding depth and complexity to their tumultuous relationship.
What to expect from A Man in Full?
As the narrative unfolds, Croker’s financial woes trigger a series of confrontations with bankers, associates, and political rivals, exposing the seedy underbelly of power and corruption in Atlanta’s elite circles. Alongside the main plot, a secondary storyline follows the plight of Conrad, a man thrown into jail after an altercation with a police officer, and Croker’s lawyer,...

Jeff Daniels and Diane Lane rarely put in anything less than stellar performances, but the Emmy winner and Oscar nominee are rarely as good as they are in Netflix’s adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s A Man in Full.
In a fortnight that has seen the premieres of Hulu’s Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough starring Under the Bridge, the Elisabeth Moss spy thriller FX series Veil, HBO’s The Sympathizer, based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize winner and a third season of the still wonderfully wicked Hacks launching today on Max, executive producers Regina King and David E. Kelley have put a real winner on the track for Netflix with A Man in Full.
On any other show, the never better Daniels as a pugnacious Atlanta real estate tycoon Charlie Croker on the brink of bankruptcy, and Lane as his revitalized razor-sharp ex-wife Martha would be more than enough of a payoff.

Nearly four years ago, Disney+ attempted to adapt Tom Wolfe’s The Right Stuff. There’s no reason for you to remember the series — it wasn’t renewed — because it was the one thing a Tom Wolfe adaptation should never be: wholly forgettable.
The innocuously mediocre series served to disabuse me of one of my favorite pet theories — that De Palma’s adaptation of The Bonfire of the Vanities failed not because of incompatibility between story and storyteller, but because his tapestry lacked sufficient scope. De Palma captured a lot of Wolfe’s literary excess with his camera, but just couldn’t capture the narrative excess in two hours, leading me to hope that someday somebody would do Bonfire as a miniseries (attempts to do just that remain ongoing). But Disney+’s The Right Stuff made it pretty clear that the key to adapting Wolfe is capturing the size and tone of his prose,...

In the famous “Church and State” episode from Succession’s penultimate season, Kendall Roy eulogizes his father with a speech acknowledging the man’s brutality while celebrating the “magnificent, awful force of him,” the “vim” that made the world a more interesting place to be. Netflix’s adaption of Tom Wolfe’s A Man in Full tries to conjure that same sort of figure with its central character: Charlie Croker (Jeff Daniels), a powerful, complicated businessman whose flaws are glaring but whose gravitational pull is undeniable. But Charlie lacks the vigor to live up to that description, and so does the series that revolves around him.
Daniels plays Charlie with a slurring Southern accent that makes him sound like he’s speaking through ill-fitting dentures. Charlie is a college football star turned real estate mogul, and something of a kingpin in Georgia. He owns a vast business empire, presiding over...

Barry Jenkins isn’t necessarily feeling the love from every social media commenter over his involvement in Mufasa: The Lion King after the Disney prequel released its first trailer this week.
After screening footage at CinemaCon earlier this month, the film’s trailer was released online Monday and features narration from Rafiki (John Kani) explaining that the movie offers the origin story for Mufasa, the lion patriarch featured in 1994’s animated The Lion King and Jon Favreau’s 2019 photorealistic remake of the same name.
Jenkins took to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday to share the trailer, and his post was greeted with both favorable responses and also some negative ones, with the criticism apparently stemming from backlash to Disney’s trend of reimagining its previous animation hits. One user wrote, “Barry, You’re too good and talented for this Iger’s soulless machine,” referring to Disney CEO Bob Iger.

Well, get ready to witness the magic of ‘Lion King’ in a whole new way as Mufasa: The Lion King’s first teaser trailer was recently dropped (April 29). And we got to learn that Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda is in charge of the soundtrack for the live-action animated prequel to The Lion King.
The songwriter-actor, 44, composed the music for a number of films and TV shows, including Moana and Encanto, to refer a few. Not to mention making physical appearances in Mary Poppins Returns, 200 Cartas, and other flicks.

Annette Bening is a five-time Oscar nominee, having recently garnered a bid for her leading turn in Netflix’s biographical drama “Nyad.” Bening is clearly having a great year as she also features in Peacock’s limited series “Apples Never Fall,” which could bring her back to the Emmys for the first time since 2006.
The limited series, adapted from the novel of “Big Little Lies” author Liane Moriarty, depicts four adult children trying to piece together the mystery behind the disappearance of their mother, played by Bening. Sam Neil, Jake Lacy, and Allison Brie all turn in fabulous supporting performances but this is Bening’s show, with the veteran actress performing at the peak of her powers.

It’s been half a decade since the directorial debut of Hannah Marks, yet each film she’s made has boasted the same vitality and youthful fervor of a new voice on the scene. Her first adaptation and most ambitious project yet, Turtles All the Way Down, benefits from her ability to tap into the zeitgeist of today’s youth, allowing it to rise above its conventions.
Adapted from John Green’s acclaimed young adult novel of the same name, Turtles All the Way Down follows a teen girl with big dreams and aspirations as she investigates the mystery of a fugitive billionaire. The film is far less interested in the central mystery than the protagonist’s internal journey, simply using this as a device to propel her self-discovery.

Sean “P. Diddy” Combs’ son, Christian “King” Combs, is 26 years old in 2024, and he’s likely seen a few wild parties thrown by his dad. The hip-hop mogul knows how to throw a huge bash involving big names in the music world. Of course, Paris Hilton has attended multiple parties thrown by Diddy.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit the packed limited series race, which has seen three new contenders premiere in the last three weeks.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’ve circled back to what is arguably the most competitive Emmys category this year: limited series. It feels like as good a time as any to return to my favorite race – particularly with “Shōgun” and Anna Sawai dominating the discourse, as well as the premiere of our dark horse favorite “Under the Bridge.” We talked about both shows this week with our voices, and I must say, it feels heartening — dare I type, Siri pay “Vindicated” – to have been so right about “Shōgun.” We both loved that show way back in February and the response has been off the charts.

After 20 years, Participant is shutting down.
Founder Jeff Skoll announced the news in a note to staff Tuesday, writing, “after much reflection, I have made the very difficult decision to wind down company operations.” During its run, the company was behind best picture winners Green Book and Moonlight, and docs such as An Inconvenient Truth and Rbg.
EBay co-founder Skoll founded the company in 2004 with a dual mission of making money and inspiring social change through entertainment (the company later moved into television and other ventures). It has helped produce and finance a slew of high-profile awards contenders. Its films won 21 Oscars and its series won 18 Emmys. It earned more than $3.3 billion at the box office. Veteran studio executive David Linde has been running Participant since 2016; previous execs involved in Participant include Ricky Strauss.
It was heavily involved in the nonfiction space, with its shuttering sure to send ripples through that community.

What happens when a powerful man faces the prospect of losing his power? A total shitshow.
In Netflix’s “A Man in Full,” Jeff Daniels plays real estate tycoon Charlie Croker, whose power is threatened by a sudden bankruptcy, conflicts of interest, and people relishing his fall from every corner. For a man who had it all, things are about to get significantly more treacherous. The trailer evokes the petty politics and animosity of HBO’s “Succession,” which has been away for almost a year and whose fans will surely be seeking this exact strain of comfort (“We got off your medical records. Turns out you’re a pussy”).
The six-episode limited series comes from writer, executive producer, and showrunner David E. Kelley and is based on the bestselling novel by Tom Wolfe. Regina King, Matthew Tinker, Thomas C Wolfe, Alexandra Wolfe, and Tommy Schlamme also executive produce, with King...

The Breakthrough Prize Ceremony, also known as “the Oscars of Science,” is an awards show unlike any other.
Founded and funded by Silicon Valley titan Yuri Milner and his artist wife Julia Milner, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, 23andMe co-founder Anne Wojcicki, and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative co-founder Priscilla Chan, the Breakthrough Prize recognizes “scientists changing the world” with award statuettes and sizable cash prizes. And on Saturday night, at the ceremony’s 10th edition — the second in a row held on the roof of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, with the Hollywood Hills glistening in the background — presenters, performers and audience members included a collection of A-listers that could give the Oscars a run for their money.
One could turn left and spot Bill Gates and Robert Downey Jr. sitting at the same table, or right and find tablemates Bradley Cooper and Rupert Murdoch schmoozing.

You may recall that this January, Sir Elton John became the 19th person ever to win the coveted Egot by claiming his first Emmy. But what you may be less familiar with is the fact that Emma Stone can become just the 20th actress (and the 25th entertainer overall) to claim an Eggocc if she triumphs in the race for the Best Drama Actress prize at this year’s Emmy Awards for her performance in the Paramount+/Showtime series “The Curse.” Too, Robert Downey Jr. is poised to be only the sixth actor to claim an Eggocc should he take home the Emmy prize in September for Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor for his work in the HBO limited series “The Sympathizer.”
What is an Eggocc, you ask? Why, it’s Emmy, Golden Globe, Oscar and Critics Choice statuettes, of course. And as just alluded to, winning all four...

Bring your pink suit to the dry cleaners because Legally Blonde is making a comeback, and you’ll want to dress to impress! According to Deadline, Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine company will partner with Amazon MGM Studios for a Legally Blonde spinoff TV series. The long-anticipated project comes from Gossip Girl writers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, who will also produce through their Fake Empire studio. Plot details remain a mystery, though Witherspoon’s involvement with the project gives me good vibes.
Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter will produce the Legally Blonde spinoff TV series via Hello Sunshine alongside Legally Blonde film producer Marc Platt. Deadline says there’s a chance we could get more than one spinoff series inspired by Legally Blonde, but details are fuzzier than the eraser toppers Elle Woods keeps in her purse.
Released in 2001, Legally Blonde stars Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods, a fashionable sorority queen whom her boyfriend dumps.

My guest this week is Karen Pittman. She’s hit the headlines lately for her reported departure from the Max show And Just Like That…, and in this episode of 20 Questions on Deadline she explains why she won’t be back for Season 3.
Leaving the show was, Pittman said, purely due to a scheduling issue with her new upcoming Netflix series Forever and work on Season 4 of Apple TV+ series The Morning Show.
“There’s a lot of things that went into making that decision. In a perfect world I would have been able to come back and do it. We don’t live in a perfect world… I wish the girls good luck for Season 3. I’m going to be cheering them on. But I was disappointed that Nya wasn’t coming back, but I hope that she lives in the imagination of the audience, still walking around New York City.

Jeffrey Epstein is back in the news with the release of the sex trafficker’s private files earlier this year, so it’s good timing that Netflix is releasing its thriller on the exposé. Unfortunately, the would-be prestige drama Scoop feels like all bark and no bite, lacking the insight or audacity to make it a meaningful entry to the genre.
Scoop tells the story of the BBC journalists who obtained the Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew about his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Although this story is undeniably interesting, the film’s fundamental flaw is treating it as a nail-biting thriller when the situation’s results are so well-known. Had the movie taken a more satirical, perhaps even farcical, approach, it would have been far more compelling.
The film also struggles to straddle the line between technical and accessible. At some points, it seems like the filmmakers...

Brie Larson won the Oscar for Best Actress for “Room” in 2016. Since then she has worked primarily in major franchises — appearing in “Avengers: Endgame” and a handful of other MCU projects as Captain Marvel and in the “Fast and Furious” film series. The actress hasn’t really found a project to show the talent she displayed in her tour de force performance in “Room” until now.
She stars in “Lessons in Chemistry,” the Apple TV+ show based on the novel of the same name by Bonnie Garmus. It follows Larson as Elizabeth Zott, a lab tech and chemist who uses her new job hosting a 1960s TV cooking show to educate housewives on scientific topics. The result is an entertaining period story in which Larson utilizes her distinct energy and impressive range to full effect. Larson injects Elizabeth with intelligence and heart but also zip, determination, and frustration in a well-rounded performance.

Mario Van Peebles has been tapped to direct “That’ll Be the Day,” the story of how Buddy Holly and other musicians of the late 1950s helped give birth to rock ‘n’ roll and influence the wider societal and cultural landscape, including the civil rights movement.
Music has been central to much of Van Peebles’ work, from his 1991 gangster movie “New Jack City” to his work on “Wu-Tang: An American Saga,” which he co-executive produced for Hulu. Van Peebles is currently writing a musical stage tribute to his father Melvin Van Peebles, to be performed at New York City’s Lincoln Center later this year.

3 Body Problem pushed its way to the top of Netflix’s TV charts.
In its first full week on the streamer, the series managed 15.6M views — up quite substantially from its debut weekend to make it not only top dog among TV but also the most-watched title on Netflix from March 25 to 31.
It’s a bit too early to put it in contention for a spot on the most popular list, since it only has 26M of the 83M views it would need to make it. How it performs over the next few weeks will be very telling about its chances.
Meanwhile, The Gentlemen fell from grace a bit, coming in at No. 3, down from first place the week prior, with 7.8M views.

The series was lauded for reinventing the original comics and portraying the infamous Tulsa Massacre of 1921. Despite positive acclaim, the series was reclassified as a limited series, which reportedly hurt the veteran star.

One of the greatest names in French cinema, Isabelle Huppert has expressed her wish to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The popularity of the MCU has attracted many stars to the superhero bandwagon. It looks like the superhero universe has also intrigued the 71-year-old actress. Upstart Cph:dox in Copenhagen aims to overtake IDFA as the top showcase for nonfiction film worldwide. On the new episode of Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast, we sit down with Cph:dox Artistic Director Niklas Engstrøm for a conversation about the growth of the festival in the Danish capital and how he aims to make it No. 1.

Sofia Vergara is back on our small screens in a big way thanks to the her new Netflix series “Griselda.” The lavish production chronicles the rise of Griselda Blanco, known as the “cocaine Godmother,” as she flees from Medellín, Colombia, to Miami and creates one of the most notorious cartels in history.
Vergara gives her best performance in years as the ruthless, demanding, and brutal Griselda. She owns every scene she’s in and eats up not just the scenery but the entire cast, too. She commands every moment and delivers a complex portrait of a powerful woman, with critics agreeing Vergara is at the top of her game.

Two new biopics about 20th-century Black icons entered the home viewing charts this week: “Bob Marley: One Love” (Paramount), the film about the legendary reggae artist nearing $100 million in theaters, and “Shirley” (Netflix), about the first Black Congresswoman and one-time presidential candidate, led newcomers in a week that mostly repeated top titles.
“One Love” is #1 at Fandango, which ranks by revenue. The VOD platform won’t be able to provide its whole top 10 until Monday, but the company confirms that placement. Somewhat surprisingly, “One Love” is #3 at iTunes, behind “Anyone but You” (Sony) and “The Beekeeper” (Lionsgate), now both at $5.99 to rent after earlier strong PVOD performances at $19.99.
Both Fandango and Google Play chart by transactions. But normally a film with the success in theaters that “Bob Marley” had would debut at #1. It’s unclear, with data beyond relative rankings absent, whether this might be just because the reduced price...
