The story everyone knows about the rise of the Mp3 and the end of the CD gold rush is a good one. It’s got Metallica and Dr. Dre, Sean Parker and the RIAA, Napster, Kazaa, Limewire, and the record industry’s flabbergasting decision to sue its own fans. But the real story, or arguably the most nuanced and fascinating one, lies elsewhere with a bunch of young computer wizzes scattered across the country and a handful of crafty, underpaid factory workers in Shelby, North Carolina.

There are several moments on Four Tet’s new album Three that sound like Aphex Twin B-Sides, which is less a sign of a lack of imagination but instead, proof of how widespread a particular take on ambient music has become. Maybe chalk it up to YouTube’s recommendation algorithm, the platform is awash in hour-long mixes of Aphex Twin tracks on loop (sometimes accompanied by a video of a serene-looking monkey relaxing in a lake), designed to play while you focus on work or school, or whatever. Four Tet...

On Thursday night, the Justice Department unsealed nine new tax-charges against Hunter Biden. The new charges come as the president’s much-maligned son finds himself at the center of countless right-wing conspiracies, GOP-led investigations into his foreign business dealings, and a DOJ special counsel probe Biden doesn’t sit down for many interviews, but he did recently talk to his long-time friend and confidant: musician and activist Moby.
The first part of the lengthy two-part installment of the “Moby Pod” was recorded before the DOJ’s new charges, and released on Friday.

Pop music stars Billie Eilish and brother Finneas are putting their money where their mouth is. Specifically, they’re backing a new restaurant, Argento, that will debut in Silver Lake in the building formerly known as Little Pine when it was run by recording artist Moby.
Restaurateur Nic Adler, the son of producer Lou Adler and a veteran eatery entrepreneur who also works as VP of festivals at Coachella parent company Goldenvoice, brought Eilish and Finneas in as investors.
Right now, Adler told LA Mag, they are redecorating, adding a VIP chef’s table, and expanding the outdoor patio. They anticipate Argento opening next month.
Adler also runs four Monty’s Good Burgers and Nic’s On Beverly in West Hollywood.
“They’re part of the makeup of the community,” Adler said of Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, whom he calls a bona fide foodie. Plus, “Billie’s a fan of Good Burger,...

There have been hundreds upon hundreds of ambient music albums released this year, but there’s only one released by an elite-tier rapper with a 13-times-Platinum record under his overalls. In the 16 years since the tectonic-shifting Outkast went on hiatus, fans of the duo’s André 3000 have been clamoring for the superstar to deliver something more than the occasional knockout guest verse. Instead, he’s been following his arrow as a nomadic, bohemian troubadour playing his flute in airports, coffee shops, sidewalks and yoga classes. His debut album, New...

Copland was supposed to be Sylvester Stallone’s comeback movie. Despite earning decent box office and generating Sly’s best reviews in decades, it seemed to be the final nail in his coffin as a leading man, and I don’t understand why. Before Copland, Stallone was headlining huge action movies like Daylight and Judge Dredd, and while they underperformed domestically and overseas, they were still big. One would think that Stallone would have been given an old-school action film to revive his career, but all of a sudden, he was slotted into cheap movies, such as the slasher thriller D-tox, which is also called Eye See You. That movie was so bad that it went direct-to-video, which pretty much meant the end of Stallone’s career for half a dozen years until he managed a major comeback with Rocky Balboa. It would get pretty dire for Sly, but Warner Bros...

Billie Eilish and Janelle Monáe sat together for drinks at the Support + Feed’s fall fundraiser this week.
Unlike the usual formal fundraising events celebrities go to, this one seemed pretty casual. The “What Was I Made For?” singer wore a black windbreaker and drank Liquid Death water as she sat across Monáe.
Monáe was honored with an Inspiration Award for her own initiative called Wondalunch, which also partnered with Support + Feed to feed Los Angeles families.
In her acceptance speech, she called herself a “child of service” and talked about her family and their roles in serving the community.
“I remember what it was like not to have food on the table,” she recalled. “What it was like for Thanksgiving and Christmas, to have to get canned goods from your church, or the Salvation Army, or an aunt or your grandmother — I remember that,” she said. “I remember the...

Like Bill Maher if he were very bald and occasionally funny, 55-year-old actor, “rage comic,” and blue-collar man of the people Bill Burr is a Joe Rogan liberal whose entire career is based on mocking the hypocrisies of political correctness and telling millennials to get off his lawn. He’s the living personification of Principal Skinner saying, “Am I so out of touch? No. It’s the children who are wrong!,” but in a thick Boston accent.
With that in mind, it doesn’t come as a huge surprise that Burr’s directorial debut is the story of a very bald and occasionally funny middle-aged man — played by Burr, in an inspired stroke of casting — who’s fed up with all the holier-than-thou bullshit of a modern world where everyone is just trying not to get into trouble; stand-ups don’t exactly tend to stretch themselves when they start making their own movies.

"The Whale," is a controversial and devastating film that seems to be going in an obvious direction, but a growing undercurrent of hope leaves viewers guessing about where exactly our protagonist will end up. Charlie (Brendan Fraser) is an online schoolteacher whose binge eating has cost him his mobility, his health, the possibility of regular human interaction, and any semblance of normalcy. When he finally starts suffering from congestive heart failure and refuses to go to the hospital, he is given a prognosis of just a few remaining days. Charlie doesn't change his ways or seek proper medical attention, but he does finally reach out to his estranged daughter Ellie (Sadie Sink).

From demonic deals to killer concerts, rock ‘n’ roll horror movies explore the intersection of music and mayhem. They’re films that rock, scare, and leave us begging for an encore.
So grab your leather jacket, tune your air guitar, and turn up the volume.

While it may feel a little blasphemous to admit, sometimes the book just isn’t better than the movie. And that’s really okay. Both authors and directors tell stories using the tools they have available in their medium. A perfectly turned phrase can be just as emotional as a beautifully framed shot in the right hands, and sometimes a filmmaker’s choices perfectly align with the author’s sensibility, bringing fan fave characters to vivid life.
However, the best movie adaptations can often transform the source material into a nearly unrecognizable vision. When this happens, it may still authentically express the original soul of a novel—or at least a soul of its own. Writing is a lonely job, but film is all about collaboration, and when it goes well, well, audiences are treated to something truly special.
So instead of repeating the familiar refrain of “the book was better,...

Five years ago, New York-based filmmaker Jason Goldman was researching a possible documentary about animal sanctuaries and heard about Renee King-Sonnen, who had gone vegan a few years earlier, transformed her husband’s Texas beef cattle ranch into Rowdy Girl Sanctuary, and started advocacy work that received regular national media attention.
In a clip (see below) released in advance of the world premiere of Goldman’s “Rowdy Girl” at Hot Docs this weekend, King-Sonnen succinctly lays out the origin of her life-changing decision to visitors seated at her kitchen table: “I was seeing how my actions were contributing to violence and cruelty … I started having real issues that I was loving some animals and eating others.”
It’s the kind of sit-down-and-get-real conversation she’s been having for more than a decade and that has caught the attention of influential like-minded people such as music innovator Moby, who had previously...

The Beatles‘ songs have been covered over and over. Some of those Beatles covers are horrible. For example, a famous comedian took a stab at a song from Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and the results were catastrophic.
William Shatner | CBS Photo Archive / Contributor 4. Bill Cosby’s ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’
Bill Cosby was successful in the worlds of television, advertising, and film, but music was not his forte. It really, really, wasn’t his forte. His cover of “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” is some of the most embarrassing noise you’ll ever hear.
Cosby doesn’t sing the song so much as speak it in a coarse voice. It sounds like someone doing a strained Cosby impression. The backup singers here sound like The Supremes all suffering from strep throat. The cover is less than three minutes long but feels like an eternity.

Moby might be best known for his pioneering electronic music, but he’s also fond of heavy metal.
In fact, he once tried to form a supergroup with Mötley Crüe’s Tommy Lee and Pantera’s Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul. Dubbed “The Sober Fucks,” the drunkenly-conceived idea never got off the ground.
“I’ve been sober for a while now,” Moby told NME, “but this was a late-night, alcohol-fueled idea between Pantera’s guitarist Dimebag Darrell, drummer Vinnie Paul, Tommy Lee, and I. I regret not starting this chaotic metal band with them, which would have sounded like a cross between Pantera and my old punk group Flipper.”
He had previously recounted the formation of the faux band in a 2008 feature in Classic Rock magazine: “At some point, about four in the morning [after a night of partying], Darrell, Tommy and I — in our completely devastated state — decided to form a band. We just...

With fingers tightly crossed, the Slamdance Film Festival plans a return to in-person screenings Jan. 20 29 in Utah, but its organizers have not forgotten the lessons they learned during two years of pandemic pivots.
“Something that’s become abundantly clear to us that’s important for the survival of independent film is accessibility,” festival producer Michael Morin tells Variety. “We’ve been able to do a successful online version of our festival for the last two years. It really made us reconsider what kind of program we wanted to put on when we did come back in person.”
“For me, the key word here would be diversification,” says festival manager Lily Yasuda. Where a hybrid of in-person and online programming was a logistical necessity during Covid, its success in facilitating attendance underscored the need for the festival to broaden its access to individuals, some without the resources and others the physical ability,...

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2022, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
2022 was a year where lists were discussed a lot. Sight and Sound released their once-in-a-decade poll, which I unexpectedly and luckily got to participate in. Is the act of list-making frivolous? Some might think so. Others may consider it is absolutely necessary to canon-forming and an indispensable part of the discovery of new cinema. One thing is certain however: the idea of lists to the general public seem to be seen as valuable only in their ability to justify or reinforce already-held opinions. In the internet age of exposure to unsolicited opinions about the arts, the culture has retracted back to needing opinions validated over and over again rather than open to being challenged in the aim of discovering something new. In my lists of recent, very purposefully,...

Moby released a new album, Ambient 23, on Sunday. Earlier in the month, the musician announced the LP, explaining that the 16-track set is inspired by his early ambient heroes, including Martyn Ware, Brian Eno, Jean-Michel Jarre, and Will Sergeant.
“It’s a bit different than some of my more recent Ambient records because it’s almost exclusively made with weird old drum machines and old synths,” he added.
On its release day marking a new year, Moby provided a bit more background on the two-and-a-half-hour-long album. It was “Made to help anxiety (my own,...

Maybe it is the influx of new movies and shows post-covid lockdowns, or maybe it’s just a coincidence, but it seems like soundtracks are really making a resurgence recently. TV shows and movies have been putting hit songs on the charts, or just generally being acclaimed for their great music supervision. This year’s Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media nominees at the Grammys — which range from shows like “Stranger Things” to movies like “Elvis” — all have that “it” factor that would, in a less competitive year, result in a probable win. But with all five strong nominees competing against each other, multiple outcomes could arise.
Perhaps the front-runner to many is “Encanto.” The soundtrack for the Oscar-winning Disney film was massive, especially at the beginning of the season, notching multiple hit songs on the Billboard Hot 100. The soundtrack also produced the smash “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,...

Comedian, actor, and artist Jim Carrey announced Tuesday that he is set to join Twitter’s celebrity exodus and shared a new animated cartoon with his followers to mark the occasion.
“I’m leaving Twitter, but 1st here’s a cartoon I made with my friend Jimmy Hayward,” Carrey said in a Tweet Tuesday.
“It’s based on my painting of a crazy old Lighthouse Keeper, standing naked in a storm, summoning the angels and shining his lamp to guide us through a treacherous night. I love you all so much!”
As Carrey describes it, the cartoon features a bearded Lighthouse Keeper who sings a folky jingle as a storm hits his lighthouse.

The Gotham Film & Media Institute announced that late filmmaker, activist and Academy Award-winning actor Sidney Poitier will receive the Icon Tribute posthumously during the 32nd annual Gotham Awards ceremony on Monday, November 28 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

When Miami-based documentary director Billy Corben and his producing partner Alfred Spellman received a June 2020 email with a subject line invoking Giancarlo Granda, Jerry Falwell Jr. and Donald Trump, they knew they had the next film for their Rakontur nonfiction banner.
Granda, a local pool boy who began having an affair with Falwell’s wife Becki in 2012, had sent the email. After telling his story to Reuters, Granda was ready to go on camera about his past relations with the evangelical couple. The result is the new Hulu documentary feature “God Forbid: The Sex Scandal That Brought Down a Dynasty,” released Nov. 1. In the doc, Granda claims that Falwell Jr., a staunch supporter of Donald Trump, was aware of and involved in the relationship he was having with Becki Falwell. After the Reuters article was published in 2020, Falwell Jr, stepped down as president of the evangelical college Liberty University in Lynchburg,...

In the mid-1990s Darren Aronofsky wrote a list of ten movies he hoped to one day pursue. His first six, from Pi to Noah, all came from it. It seems a stretch to think he had “adapt a play written in 2012” on there, but you never know. The Whale is very much a filmed play, and it makes no pretensions otherwise: the set is a Set, the acting is Acting, and monologues come quick and fast. It’s based on Samuel D. Hunter’s Obie-winning work of the same name and stars an exceptional, resurgent Brendan Fraser as a 600-pound man attempting to reconnect with his daughter. Suffice it to say this film would be quite small without him.
In theatre productions of Hunter’s text, Fraser’s character, Charlie, was often played by an actor in a fat suit—a choice that is becoming increasingly delicate, to say the least.

Netflix’s “Stranger Things” was known for its nostalgic needle drops before the most recent season, but Season 4 catapulted the show’s soundtrack to a whole new level by putting Kate Bush back at the top of the charts decades after “Running Up That Hill” was first released.
But the “Stranger Things” Season 4 Volume 2 soundtrack isn’t without its own standout musical moments — including, yes, more Kate Bush.
The trailer for Season 4 features a remix of Journey’s “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” which forecasts the impending sense of doom that comes with the latest, darkest installment of the Netflix tentpole, which contrasts very sharply with the use of Motley Crue’s “Home Sweet Home” and The Who’s “Baba O’Reily” in the trailer for summer-y Season 3. Even the upbeat duet of “Never Ending Story” solidifies the long distance relationship between Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) and Suzie Bingham (Gabriela Pizzolo).

Perhaps you’d heard but a fresh season of a little show called Stranger Things just arrived on Netflix’s servers. There are always plenty of reasons to get excited about new episodes of Stranger Things, and the seven new episodes presented in season 4 volume 1 are no different.
Operating under an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mantra, Stranger Things season 4 is absolutely packed with ’80s-set science fiction, horror, and adventure. Once again, our heroic kids from Hawkins must confront a mystery from the Upside Down. In this case, who is this demonic wizard Vecna and why is he so hopelessly addicted to breaking human bodies?
In addition to all of the usual fun plotting though, a new season of Stranger Things means a new batch of old music. Though creators The Duffer Brothers were born in 1984 and probably don’t remember a hell of a lot of the 1980s,...

As evidenced by the meteoric resurgence of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” after its appearance on “Stranger Things 4,” the show’s soundtrack has become just as much a phenomenon as its thrilling plot.
With the final two episodes of Season 4 dropping on Netflix today, Legacy Recordings has released the complete soundtrack to “Stranger Things 4” in digital and physical forms. The album contains six additional songs, including an extended version of Bryce Miller and Alloy Tracks’ remix of Journey’s “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),” featuring the band’s singer Steve Perry.
“I was stunned at how cool it was,” Perry said of the original remix in a statement. “I found out that Bryce Miller and Troy MacCubbin had created it and told them how much I loved it. One week later, I had an idea for an extended version, so I called Bryce and we assembled our extended remix.

This year’s list draws attention to shocking neuroscientific research that concluded living in unnatural and barren captive environments physically damages elephants’ brains. The #1 worst zoo of 2021 is Edmonton Valley Zoo in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, which has held female Asian elephant Lucy in solitary confinement for the past 15 years. Ricky Gervais and Moby are calling for the elephants to be released to accredited sanctuaries.
“I always felt bad seeing sad animals in zoos, but I had no idea that zoos cause brain damage to elephants,” said decades-long animal activist and musician, Moby. “The list of 10 Worst Zoos for Elephants is a shocking alarm call exposing how elephants are suffering and dying.”
