In one of our recent Wtf episodes, we covered the eye-gouging, eastern European-set filthy shenanigans of Eli Roth’s nicely messed up torture porn movie, Hostel. The film helped pave the way for the exploitation horror subgenre to thrive in the early 2000s, and followed a group of American tourists who get a lot more than they bargained for during a trip to the lovely picturesque country of Slovakia. Poor lads. All they wanted was some promiscuous sex with hot European ladies, but they weren’t counting on a shady organization dishing out decapitation and slit throats, as a side dish to the fornication. The movie, according to the tagline, was ‘based upon true events’ and whether or not you believe this claim, it’s nothing if not brutally demented in parts. In September 2023, Danny was sentenced to 30 years in prison after he was convicted on two counts of forcible rape earlier in the year.
Days after Danny‘s conviction, Bijou filed for divorce after 12 years of marriage.
Recently, a judge denied Danny‘s request for bail – and it’s partly because of his divorce from Bijou.

Danny Masterson, the former star of the TV series That 70’s Show, has been denied bail over concerns the actor would attempt to flee the country.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charlaine Olmedo said she denied Masterson bail mainly because of he is a flight risk.
“If defendant’s conviction and sentence are upheld on appeal, he will likely remain in custody for decades and perhaps the rest of his life,” Olmedo said. “In light of the fact that defendant has no wife to go home to, defendant now has every incentive to flee and little reason to return to state prison to serve out the remainder of his lengthy sentence should his appeal be unsuccessful.”

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge is signaling that Danny Masterson will be denied bail after being convicted of rape.
The former That ’70s Show actor was sentenced to 30 years in prison in September 2023. His legal team is appealing the ruling.
However, newly unveiled court documents reveal why he would not be released on bail if the appeal if denied. The reasoning was linked in part to his divorce from Bijou Phillips.

A judge for the Los Angeles Superior Court has denied “That ’70s Show” star Danny Masterson bail pending appeal, stating the former actor has “every incentive to flee.”
“If defendant’s conviction and sentence are upheld on appeal, he will likely remain in custody for decades and perhaps the rest of his life,” Judge Charlaine Olmedo in an order on Wednesday.
Olmedo highlighted her decision is in part rooted in the possibility that the actor could take off on the run if granted bail, as he no longer has a spouse to go home to. Masterson and his wife Bijou Phillips are in the process of divorcing after 12 years of marriage. Phillips submitted the filing two weeks after Masterson was convicted in May 2023.

Malia Obama stepped onto a red carpet last week for the first time, with good reason. The former first daughter hit Park City for the Sundance Film Festival premiere of her short film The Heart, an 18-minute directorial debut that snagged a spot in the U.S. short fiction films program of the 2024 edition. The premiere screening happened on the fest’s opening day, Jan. 18, and screened two more times over the weekend. The budding filmmaker, who participated in all post-screening Q&As to discuss her work, also took time out of her busy schedule to screen the film and speak with a group of students at Park City High School about all things creative from writing to directing.
Malia Obama attended The Heart premiere and posed with her actors and short-film collaborators.
It wasn’t all work and no play for the 25-year-old daughter of Barack and Michelle Obama.

Danny Masterson’s “grapes and wine” farm is the primary source of his income, which is still considered “stable” despite monthly lawyer bills, credit card payments and a mortgage, according to a document prepared by his parole officer.
The “That ’70s Show” star was convicted of raping two women and sentenced earlier this month to 30 years to life in prison by a Los Angeles judge. Before that hearing, his interim probation officer prepared a document recommending state prison that included the details about his life and finances that was obtained by journalist Meghan Cuniff and published Wednesday on the Scientology blog Underground Bunker.
“The defendant reported he is an actor and producer,” the document reads. “He related he began acting and modeling at age four. However, he noted he last worked as an actor/producer in 2018. He added he started a farm in 2018 and continues to earn income from the farm.

In Kutcher’s letter, he referred to Masterson as a “role model”, while Kunis vouched for Masterson’s “exceptional character”, calling him as an “outstanding older brother figure,” in documents obtained by Variety.
Both the actors have previously worked with Masterson. Kutcher and Kunis starred in ‘That ’70s Show’ with him, which ran for eight seasons and 200 episodes between 1998 and 2006.
Kutcher then again starred with Masterson on the web series, ‘The Ranch’, though Masterson was written out of the show in its third season, after being accused of sexual assault in 2017.

When allegations of rape against Danny Masterson cost him his TV show and Hollywood career in 2017, he bought land in the Santa Ynez Valley (setting for the movie “Sideways”) and started a vineyard, toiling “long days on the land” to make it a profitable venture, his wife Bijou Phillips said.
Phillips, the “Almost Famous” and horror film actress who has been married to Masterson since 2011, made the disclosure in a letter to Judge Charlaine Olmedo, one of many that was included in a defense memorandum asking for sentencing leniency.
Despite heartfelt pleas from Masterson’s “That ’70s Show” castmates Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis and others, Olmedo sentenced Masterson to the maximum 30 years to life in prison this week.

Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis and other friends, family members and “That ’70s Show” castmates sent heartfelt letters seeking leniency for Danny Masterson, describing him as a strictly drug-free devoted family man – though the judge wound up giving him the maximum sentence of 30 years to life anyway.
Masterson was convicted in May on two counts of forcible rape for separate assaults alleged by two women around 2013. A first trial late last year resulted in a hung jury, but prosecutors re-tried the case and were more prepared to support the victims’ claims that they had been drugged prior to being attacked this time around.
Notably, the letters to Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo, from former castmates, professional collaborators and wife Bijou Phillips repeatedly highlight Masterson’s drug-free lifestyle – Kutcher even credits his friend for keeping drugs out of the question as the group of young actors rose to fame together.

Later in the letter, the actor wrote, “While I’m aware that the judgement has been cast as guilty on two counts of rape by force and the victims have a great desire for justice.

US actor Danny Masterson has been sentenced to serve 30 years to life in prison for raping two women, the media reported. Masterson starred on ‘That 70’s Show’, a TV series that was airing at the time of his crimes in the early 2000s, The BBC reported on Thursday.
Prosecutors argued Masterson, 47, had relied on his status as a prominent Scientologist to avoid accountability.
Judge Charlaine Olmedo allowed the victims of his crimes to read impact statements in court ahead of his sentencing.
Prominent former Scientologist and actress Leah Remini attended Thursday’s sentencing hearing and comforted the women before and after they delivered their statements.
“I wished I had reported him earlier to the police,” one of the women said, according to US media.
Another woman told Masterson: “I forgive you. Your sickness is no longer mine to bear,” according to Reuters.
Masterson remained silent throughout the hearing, The BBC reported.

A judge sentenced “That ’70s Show” star Danny Masterson to 30 years to life in prison Thursday for the rapes of two women two decades ago.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo handed down the sentence to the 47-year-old Masterson after hearing statements from the women about the trauma they experienced and the suffering caused by the disturbing memories in the years since.
The actor, who has been in custody since May, sat in court wearing a suit. Masterson watched the women without visible reaction as they spoke.
“When you raped me, you stole from me,” said one woman who Masterson was convicted of raping in 2003. “That’s what rape is, a theft of the spirit.”

With his trial concluded, That 70s Show star Danny Masterson has been sentenced to 30 years in jail for multiple rapes. The sentence, handed down by LA Superior Court Judge Charlaine Olmedo, passes the maximum sentence onto Masterson for his crimes. Masterson chose to remain silent during Thursday’s court session. However, Judge Charlaine Olmedo spoke to him directly about a “criminal justice system that you feel has failed you,” saying, “You are not the victim here …your actions 20 years ago were criminal.” After serving his time, Masterson must register as a sex offender, per the details of his punishment. As Masterson exited the courtroom, his wife, Bijou Phillips, and other family members quietly wept.
Today’s results come after Masterson was found guilty by an LA jury three months ago on two of three counts of sexual assault. The rapes transpired two decades ago, and the actor was granted 150 days credit for time already served.

Danny Masterson was sentenced Thursday to the maximum 30-years-to-life in prison for raping two women in 2001 and 2003.
Masterson, 47, will be eligible for parole after 25½ years but can be held in prison for life. He did not visibly react to the sentencing from the judge. Masterson had earlier waived his right to speak at the sentencing hearing.
The former “That ’70s Show” star was found guilty of the two charges in May. At the time, the jury could not agree on a third count of rape brought by another Jane Doe, which would have upped his potential sentence to 40 years-to-life.
The first rape victim, Chrissy B, said in a victim impact statement at the sentencing hearing that the actor called her “stupid, untalented, embarrassing, trash.”

Updated with defense statement: Danny Masterson was sentenced this morning to 30 years to life in prison for multiple rapes.
As the one-time That ’70s Show actor was for both of his trials on the criminal charges, Masterson was present in court today for the sentencing from Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charlaine Olmedo. Permitted to address the court, Masterson chose not to speak Thursday — though he did confer with defense lawyer Phillip Cohen just before sentencing began.
Speaking to Masterson directly of a “criminal justice system that you feel has failed you,” Judge Olmedo told him that “you are not the victim here … your actions 20 years ago were criminal.” Masterson was informed that because of his sentence, he will have to register as a sex offender upon parole or release — which the ex-network star told the court he understood.

Update, 10: 15 Am: Facing up to 30 years behind bars for being found guilty last month of two counts of rape, Danny Masterson will be sentenced on August 4.
A week after an LA jury delivered its partial verdict, Judge Charlaine Olemdo announced the sentencing date today at a downtown hearing.
Taken away in handcuffs on May 31 at the conclusion of his sexual assault retrial, the That 70s Show actor is currently being held in custody in “administrative segregation” in the LA County Men’s Central Jail. Defense lawyers have indicated they will appeal last week’s verdict. However, as of today, no appeal has been filed.
The criminal trial panel was deadlocked on count 3 of the initial charges. That count concerned prominent Scientologist Masterson’s former long-term girlfriend and ex-Scientologist Christina B a.k.a. Jane Doe #3., who testified in both the first trial and the retrial. “I am devastated that...

On the morning of April 25, testimony began in the second rape trial of That ’70s Show actor Danny Masterson after an initial trial ended last November in a hung jury and mistrial.
The first witness on the stand was one of Masterson’s alleged victims, Jane Doe 3, who had been in a relationship with Masterson between 1996 and 2002.
Deputy Da Reinhold Mueller asked her how she was feeling.
“Not great,” she said.
When Mueller asked what might be causing her concern about testifying, she said, “I’m scared.”

To say Herschell Gordon Lewis‘ and Jeremy Kasten‘s respective The Wizard of Gore releases pushed me to my limits is correct for all the wrong reasons. My choice to stack the 1970 original and 2007 remake back-to-back stands as one of my least favorite Revenge of the Remakes double-bills thus far. I’ve no objection to gore-forward perversions that assault audiences with repugnant visuals, unless their storytelling devolves from nonsense to unintelligible drivel from one title to the next. Even worse when one of the films can’t even sustain its titular “Gore” effects.
Lewis’ legacy as the Grandfather of Grossouts and Sorcerer of Sadistic Splatter isn’t lost on The Wizard of Gore, unlike Allen Kahn‘s screenplay, hacked apart and reassembled to maximize the grotesque kill sequences using sheep carcass guts. Kasten’s remake didn’t have to attain Kubrickian levels of storytelling to surpass its inspiration’s narrative cohesion,...

Kate Hudson stars in the movie as Penny Lane, a young blonde woman who bewitches the up-and-coming band Stillwater, along with the wide-eyed, impressionable young reporter covering their journey (Patrick Fugit's William Miller), while the band is on tour in 1973. In the film, she explains that she isn't a groupie. Lane clarifies, "Groupies sleep with rock stars because they want to be near someone famous. We are here because of the music, we inspire the music. We are band-aides."
The traditionally judgmental perspective of what a groupie entails is explored through Lane's passion for the music, freedom of living on the road, and learning to love without commitment despite still facing heartbreak. She's a complicated character with complicated beliefs,...

A judge declared a mistrial Wednesday at the rape trial of “That ’70s Show” actor Danny Masterson after jurors, who were leaning strongly toward acquitting him, deadlocked following the monthlong trial in which the Church of Scientology played a supporting role.
Prosecutors said Masterson raped three women, including a former girlfriend, in his Hollywood Hills home between 2001 and 2003 and the church dissuaded them from going public for years. Masterson, 46, pleaded not guilty and his lawyer said the acts were all consensual.
“I find the jurors hopelessly deadlocked,” Judge Charlaine Olmedo declared after the jury foreman said there was nothing the court could do to move them closer to reaching a unanimous decision. She set a March date for a retrial in Los Angeles Superior Court.
Olmedo had ordered jurors to take Thanksgiving week off and keep deliberating after they said on Nov. 18 that they could not reach a consensus. A...

A mistrial was called Wednesday in the criminal rape trial of That ’70s Show” star Danny Masterson, a stunning result for the jury that was frustrated and deadlocked going into the Thanksgiving break – then shaken up when two jurors caught Covid and were replaced with alternates.
Prosecutors have the option of scheduling a new trial, and the judge set March 27 as the date to start fresh, with a Jan. 10 status hearing next. But the result of this trial would do nothing to encourage prosecutors, who also have the option to drop the matter – because even with fresh jurors, the vote wasn’t close.
The new jury, after indicating once again in a note Wednesday that they were nowhere near unanimous, was called into the courtroom Wednesday and, at the judge’s request, revealed the current state of their votes: For count one, two guilty and 10 not guilty; for count two,...

A jury deliberating criminal rape charges against “That ’70s Show” star Danny Masterson on Friday said they were “unable to come to a unanimous decision” in all three cases, but the judge said she would have them back for more deliberations after a break for the holidays.
The jury began deliberating late Tuesday and in earnest on Wednesday morning, but after more than two full days were still not aligned. The judge said that wasn’t enough time for full deliberations, and that she would call the panel back Nov. 28, meaning the courtroom would be dark for the entire Thanksgiving holiday week.
Defense attorney Phillip Cohen argued that the jury would be visiting with relatives and friends over Thanksgiving break – 10 full days to read and hear information about the case. But Judge Charlaine Olmeda said it’s not unusual for juries to take holiday breaks, that her decision would stand.

The rape trial of “That ’70s Show” star and prominent Scientologist Danny Masterson went to the jury for deliberations Tuesday afternoon following more than a month of testimony. After getting instructions from the judge, the panel briefly began deliberating before going home for the night, and will begin again on Wednesday morning.
Closing arguments began first thing Tuesday, with prosecutors wrapping more than a month of testimony by painting the “That ’70s Show” star as an entitled “upstat” – a church term for its highest-ranking members – who sexually attacked young, vulnerable women by bulldozing through clear boundaries, knowing there would be no consequences.
“Mr. Masterson has been sitting here in court for the last four weeks or so. He’s always well dressed and well groomed,” Deputy District Attorney Reinhold Mueller told the jury and courtroom gallery – which on Tuesday was packed with well-dressed Scientologists. “I can assure you these victims have a different image.

Testimony in the criminal rape trial of Danny Masterson has concluded, as prosecutors rested their case Monday and lawyers for the “That ’70s Show” star indicated they would not call any witnesses. Closing arguments were set to begin Tuesday.
Four women – including an unexpected 11th-hour witness whose allegations are not among the charges but echoed that of the previous three – all testified over the past few weeks that Masterson raped them at his Los Angeles home after they began mysteriously drifting in and out of consciousness. The witnesses, including a former longtime girlfriend of Masterson’s, said the attacks happened between 1998 and 2003.
Masterson was not necessarily expected to testify on his own behalf, though it comes as some surprise that his lawyer, Phillip Cohen, will not present any defense. Cohen struggled to gain traction cross-examining witness, often showing frustration and repeatedly calling for a mistrial.

Ghost Dog actress Tricia Vessey stepped forward at Danny Masterson’s serial rape trial in Los Angeles Wednesday and gave her first public testimony claiming the That ’70s Show star forced himself on her twice in 1996 when she was too inebriated to consent to sex.
The actress, who gave Rolling Stone permission to use her name, told jurors the first alleged incident happened the night of a wrap party for the movie she filmed with Masterson and fellow actor Justin Pierce that year. She said Masterson rattled her with an...
