“Hey girl, you find out who your baby daddy is yet?” may have been an insane way for Danni to answer the phone on the midseason finale of Tyler Perry’s Sistas — but can you really blame her?
It’s been the question on every viewer’s mind since Karen found out she was pregnant, roughly 30 years ago. This week on NBC’s La Brea, the first threat to Lucas and Veronica’s shiny-happy family dynamic came in the form of, no, not a pterodactyl nor a wooly mammoth, but politics. (Imagine!)
Lucas (played by New Zealand actor Josh McKenzie) has spent the first half of La Brea‘s six-episode farewell season grabbing clout as a leader, in the wake of the survivors losing their camp in the clearing. As such, he was quietly angling to fill the open council seat at Paara’s village, and in doing so work with interim leader Ruth to facilitate harmony between...

Nicole Newnham’s The Disappearance of Shere Hite is so packed with ideas, timelines, and input from various participants that a documentary twice as long would have been justified. Such is the significance of Shere Hite’s life and writings in the 1970s and ’80s on the subject of sex, particularly women’s bodies and how they typically achieve orgasm.
Hite’s 1976 book The Hite Report has become an all-time bestseller, in large part due to the controversy it sparked following its publication. While the film’s title initially suggests a mystery, Newnham’s remarkable use of archival footage, especially of Hite being ceaselessly berated on talk shows, composes such a clear and coherent portrait of her eventual exile from American culture that the film becomes a furious indictment of an openly repressive society.
While Newnham takes a mostly linear approach to explaining the trajectory of Hite’s research and fame,...

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is planning a mega Emmy weekend in December — although it remains to be seen whether the Daytime Emmys will be a part of the festivities. Meanwhile, there’s no word yet on when the flagship Daytime Emmys ceremony — which had been scheduled to air on CBS in June — might take place. CBS and NATAS didn’t have further information on when the event might take place; NATAS only noted in its release that “information regarding additional Daytime Emmy Award ceremonies may be announced.”

Alright, alright, alright, it’s time to settle this once and for all. It may have started as a joke that Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson must be related – come on, two Texas boys with trademark chill demeanors and so many shared personality traits have to be brothers! – but now there is an official call for a DNA test by none other than Maury Povich.
Speaking with E! News (via Today), Maury Povich said it’s tough to not want to do a DNA test for both Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. “I just heard about the possibilities…I mean, Matthew, I don’t know you. Woody, you’re my pal, but guess what? I would come out of retirement! We could do prime-time DNA: Maury’s back with Woody and Matthew…I’ll even get my showtime color back in my hair…Woody’s got my number. I’m ready!

Maury Povich struck ratings gold with paternity tests on his long-running daytime TV talk show. He’s now taking the direct-to-consumer route and launching an at-home paternity test aptly dubbed “The Results Are In.”
Speaking to TMZ, the 84-year-old TV personality said partnering up with DNA Diagnostic Center (Ddc) made perfect sense considering his connection to the company for more than 20 years. Ddc was the company that performed the paternity tests on his eponymous talk show. Given their long history, Povich says it’s why his business manager came to him with the idea.

In a scenario straight out of Maury Povich, tests have proven that former WWE star Stan Lane is Not the father of conservative Congresswoman Lauren Boebert.
Lane recently agreed to take a second DNA test to prove that Boebert was not his spawn out of a brief affair with her mother. Lane and Boebert agreed last month to take a new DNA test after continued paternity claims by Boebert’s mother, Shawn Roberts Bentz.
“I can confirm that Stan Lane is not my biological father. I personally have never publicly claimed he was my father—but certainly, that allegation is out there,” Boebert told The Daily Beast, which reviewed the test results.
The second test was done after it was revealed that a lab worker who took the original Lane sample was convicted of taking a bribe to switch vials on another test.
Lane, now age 69, met Boebert’s mother in the mid 1980s.

Where is Maury Povich when you need him? He could've solved this paternity issue like no other.
The future of Woodstone Manor was put into chaos when a new heir arrived in town on Ghosts Season 2 Episode 22.
Family secrets and ghostly troubles kept the crew busy, but we were treated to a must-see season finale -- one of Ghost's best episodes by far!
"The Heir" was a perfect mix of everything we love about Ghosts. A chaotic issue at the manor, some heartfelt moments, off-the-wall comedy, and everyone banding together as a loving family.
Ghosts Season 2's finale was a smash hit, showing us yet again why Ghosts is one of the best comedies on TV.
The arrival of the new heir seemed fishy right from the start.
I've watched enough daytime and primetime soaps to know that whenever a long-lost relative arrives out of the blue, they almost always want money.

One of the biggest pop culture staples of the late 90s was The Jerry Springer Show. It brought forth the popularity of guilty pleasure, trash television as outrageous guests talk without filters, argue with the audience and each other, and eventually get into fist fights. The show itself made cameo appearances in other mediums, like a segment in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me where Dr. Evil returns and eventually gets into a fight with another guest. Chances are, you probably chanted his name at one point, following suit as the audience cheer him on as the shit hits the fan on his show.
Variety now reports that the famed host has passed at the age of 79. Springer started as a former Cincinnati news anchor and mayor before he found a place on daytime television. Springer is said to have died peacefully at his home in the Chicago suburbs on Thursday.

If you want to easily make the merge in a modern-day Survivor season, all you have to do is recreate every puzzle the show has ever built and practice until your plane leaves for Fiji.
That’s how it all went down for Carson in Wednesday’s “earn the merge” episode, when the show’s repetition once again favored a player who was beyond prepared to play. No shade to Carson here — the kid obviously had the time and patience to study up. All hats are off to him, including Jeff Probst’s blue and orange caps. (Me? I prefer the orange one,...

The syndicated daytime talk show landscape has seen some big changes since the ending of shows from veterans Ellen DeGeneres and Wendy Williams earlier this year.
And among the new shows that have launched this fall, there’s a clear winner: Debmar-Mercury’s “Sherri” starring former “View” co-host Sherri Shepherd.
Shepherd’s syndicated talker, which took over most of the time slots occupied by “The Wendy Williams Show” (on which she was a frequent guest host last season) is sitting above the rookie pack with a 0.7 season-to-date household rating, representing about 1 million viewers a day, according to Nielsen Media. In the all-important demo of women aged 25-54, it’s notching a 0.4.

Note: The following contains spoilers for “Only Murders in the Building” Season 2, Episode 8: “Hello Darkness.
“Only Murders in the Building” finds its happy place in happy mediums: the juxtaposition of humor and grief, laughter in between the tears and generational divisions that actually work to bridge disparities.
In its sophomore season’s eighth episode, the show once again plays with opposites, illuminating the central mystery that’s clouding the trio’s lives amid a New York City–wide blackout that’s affected their building. For co-creator, showrunner and executive producer John Hoffman, “Hello, Darkness” paradoxically yet intentionally offers rays of light and clarity — all framed against the backdrop of the stately (if overpriced) Arconia’s gloomy hidden passageways.
“It’s basically their rock bottom when they drop down and they say, ‘We’re lost in our own building,’ and feel at a loss between the three of them,” he told TheWrap.

On a long night of superlative-filled salutes to TV legends, Amy Poehler got the last laugh at the 18th annual Brandon Tartikoff Awards.
Poehler was No. 7 out of the seven honorees who were feted Thursday night at the Beverly Wilshire hotel in Beverly Hills with the annual TV achievement kudos handed out by the National Assn. of Television Program Executives. The Tartikoff Awards are typically held during the NATPE conference in January, but that annual tradition was tabled this year by the Covid upsurge.
Poehler, the multi-hyphenate “Parks and Recreation” star who has become a prolific producer, made the most of her closing slot. She opened with a wry reference to an earlier snafu when presenter Connie Chung noted that the wrong speech was loaded on to the teleprompter as she delivered her remarks about Tartikoff honoree Maury Povich, who is also her husband.

It’s a new day in daytime TV. On Thursday, Ellen DeGeneres left the syndicated talk-show airwaves after 19 years — and that leaves Kelly Clarkson on the starting block, poised to make a run for first place against longtime leaders “Dr. Phil” and “Live With Kelly & Ryan.”
Clarkson will take the “Ellen” slot this fall. Her show, like “Ellen” and “Maury,” averages a 0.4 rating among women 25-54 this season, the key demo for ad sales on syndicated daytime talk shows. “Wendy Williams,” which was guest-hosted this season by a stable of fill-ins including Sherri Shepherd (who gets her own show this fall), also averaged a 0.4 rating.
That means they all tie for third place in daytime’s syndicated talk space, but three of those four aired their series finales. Clarkson’s show is the only one continuing this fall, much to the delight of Tracie Wilson, the executive VP of NBCUniversal...

In 2017, Wendy Williams fainted on live television. The daytime gossip queen quickly got up and continued her show, but that episode signaled the beginning of health issues that plagued Williams. At the start of the fall 2021 TV season, the host went on a hiatus due to complications from Graves’ disease but, ultimately, never returned. As a result, “The Wendy Williams Show” is coming to a sudden end next month after a 14-year run.
Williams, who helped redefined the daytime space after conquering radio with her gift for gab, has said in various interviews that she plans to return to her show this fall. But with plans charging ahead for the 2022-23 television season, Williams isn’t reclaiming her purple chair so soon — and even if she did, she’d return to a daytime landscape that has dramatically changed almost overnight.

Vice TV’s “Dark Side of the 90’s” returns with its second season next month, featuring new twisted tales from the era. In the Season 2 trailer, which is exclusive to Variety, Mary Jo Buttafuoco breaks down the infamous 1992 incident in which she was shot in the face by Amy Fisher, a teenager that her husband, Joey Buttafuoco, had committed statutory rape against.
Labeled by the tabloids as “The Long Island Lolita,” 17-year-old Fisher served seven years on first-degree aggravated assault charges for the attack. “I turned my head to open my door, and that’s when my head exploded,” Mary Jo Buttafuoco says in the trailer.
The promo also includes 90’s icon Maury Povich, and teases of deep dives into “Cops,” “The Real World” and Mma and UFC.
Per Vice, “‘Dark Side of the 90’s’ reveals the soul of the decade through the pop culture moments, trends and people that captivated us.

“Even though I told them I was ready for assisted living, out of loyalty to NBCUniversal and my more than 100 staff and crew members, Tracie Wilson and I agreed to one more deal."
The star concluded, "I’m so proud of my relationship with NBCUniversal and all those who worked on the Maury show, but as I occasionally tell my guests: ‘Enough, already!'”

Get those paternity tests in now, because “Maury” won’t help you find out whether you’re the father beyond this September. “Maury” is the latest daytime talker to announce that it’s ceasing production in 2022, in what is now amounting to a major shift in the daypart.
Maury Povich is ending his run and retiring after 24 seasons of hosting “Maury” for NBCUniversal Syndication Studios (and its predecessors) — and seven seasons before that at Paramount Domestic Television, where it was titled “The Maury Povich Show.” Most recently, NBCU had renewed “Maury” in February 2020 for two more seasons in national syndication, bringing it through 2022.
Povich’s exit comes as NBCU also ends another first-run syndicated series, “Judge Jerry,” hosted by Jerry Springer, after three seasons. And the daytime talk landscape is being remade as “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” “Nick Cannon” and “The Wendy Williams Show” all say farewell.

Update Sunday Am: NBCUniversal on Sunday confirmed that its daytime syndicated talk show Maury will be wrapping with the current season, saying that it was a mutual decision between the studio and veteran host Maury Povich to end the talker made when Maury was most recently renewed in 2020 through the 2021-22 season.
