Thirty years ago today, on September 21, 1993, at 10/9c, NYPD Blue premiered on ABC.
However, its debut didn't necessarily mean it reached every household.
The controversial series premiered to apocalyptic fanfare, with critics wondering if the series would usher in the end of TV as viewers knew it.
It’s funny the things you remember from your youth. I was at the age where the idea of a series willing to push the envelope, delivering a taste of the big screen on the small, sounded like an excellent idea.
They say that all publicity is good publicity, but people around the country were so concerned about the effect the show may have on the morals of the everyman that 57 local stations around the country refused to air the premiere.
A month later, there were still 45 ABC affiliates who, due to the possibility of coarse language and nudity, were still not airing it.

Although he is included among the younger half of all Best TV Drama Actor SAG Award winners, reigning champ Lee Jung-jae (“Squid Game”) was part of the fourth oldest group of nominees in his category’s history. With an average age of 52, the 49-year-old and his 2022 competitors (who ranged in age from 39 to 75) came within two years of breaking the record set by Bryan Cranston and his fellow 2014 nominees. Now, judging by this season’s predominantly mature crop of hopefuls, that bar is almost sure to be raised.
According to Gold Derby’s predictions, the men most likely to be nominated for the 2023 Best TV Drama Actor SAG Award are past contenders Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”) and Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), plus category newcomers Adam Scott (“Severance”), Jonathan Pryce (“The Crown”) and Dominic West (“The Crown”). The average ages of our present Top 5 and Top 10 are both 58, with Pryce (75) being...

It's not every day that you have a daily reminder of your childhood right outside of your office window, but then again, not everyone is Jason Bateman. It's a special kind of irony that Bateman has been in the entertainment industry for his entire life when you consider he's made a career of playing the everyday straight man. The former child star fell off the map for the better part of a decade, but the actor/director returned to Hollywood with a vengeance.
Bateman's comeback was kick-started in 2003 with a starring role in Fox's "Arrested Development" as Michael Bluth, the series' protagonist who guides his family through its many, many crises. Following the success of the comedy series, Bateman landed several supporting movie roles, followed by leading roles in films like "Identity Thief" and "Horrible Bosses." He recently re-invented himself in the dark Netflix series "Ozark," but in addition to acting,...

Actor Jason Bateman has claimed that he once almost ran Michael Jackson over with his bike while on set in the 1980s.
Bateman had a role on the American sitcom Silver Spoons at the time, which Jackson was apparently a fan of. The show aired throughout the early 1980s with Bateman starring as character Derek Taylor for the first two seasons, first appearing in the show when he was just 13.
While visiting the set during the time of filming, Jackson was apparently walking towards the stage when Batemen and his co-star Rick Schroder – the lead of the show – were riding down from it, almost knocking him over in the process.
“This is while we were doing Silver Spoons at Universal and we’d need to have our bikes because kids gotta play,” he explained while being interviewed on US show Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Josh Brolin has spent his career pushing the narrative boundaries of the West.
Roles in resurgent Westerns such as “No Country for Old Men” and “True Grit” fortified the Oscar nominee’s place in the genre’s recent canon. His first major TV role was on ABC’s 1989 series “The Young Riders,” about the Pony Express.
The year prior to “Riders,” Brolin spent 24 hours believing he’d get his big break on CBS’ “Lonesome Dove” miniseries, having been cast as Newt, an orphan in the West, alongside his all-time favorite actor Robert Duvall. But the day after getting the role, the network pulled the offer, citing a contractual obligation to eventual star Rick Schroder.
“It was the greatest moment of my life,” Brolin recalls. “It is still the most elated I’ve ever felt about anything work-related and then it left as quickly as it came. I was absolutely freaking devastated.

“Law & Order: Organized Crime” star Chris Meloni put Ricky Schroder’s latest attempt at anti-vax activism in check Monday, calling out the former “NYPD Blue” and “Silver Spoons” star a day after he arrived in Washington, D.C. as part of the so-called “Freedom Convoy” protests.

Back in 1995, Dennis Franz (“NYPD Blue”) made history as the first winner of the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best TV Drama Actor. Among those he beat were “Chicago Hope” pair Hector Elizondo and Mandy Patinkin, whose head-to-head SAG battle was the first between drama costars.
Over the years, there have been 11 more such cases on the male side, but only two resulted in wins for either of the actors involved. This statistic could hinder the chances of current nominees Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, and Jeremy Strong who, as stars of “Succession,” have broken new ground as the first trio of castmates placed in direct competition for this award.

One year ago, “Schitt’s Creek” became the second TV series for which two men simultaneously received Screen Actors Guild award bids for playing father and son. As Johnny and David Rose, Eugene Levy and Dan Levy followed the example set by “Everybody Loves Raymond” pair Peter Boyle and Ray Romano in 2002. Until this year, these were the only such cases in SAG Awards history. Now, “Succession” star Brian Cox and his TV sons Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong have broken new ground as the first ones to achieve this feat on the drama side. In a new video, former “Silver Spoons” star Ricky Schroder can be seen harassing a Costco employee after they wouldn’t let him enter the store without a mask.
In the video, which was posted to Schroder’s Facebook page, Schroder asked a Costco employee why he wouldn’t let him into the store unmasked.
“Because in the state of California and the county of Los Angeles, and Costco, there has been no change to our mask policy,” the employee, whose name is Jason, said.
“Yes there has been. You didn’t see the news? Nationwide Costco has said you don’t need to wear masks,” Schroder replied, referencing the recent news that Costco is no longer requiring masks inside their stores.
However, the no-mask policy only applies within states and jurisdictions that no longer have a mask mandate. California and Los Angeles County both still require masks inside establishments.

This year’s Golden Globe Awards will be singular in a lot of ways, from its live-virtual hybrid to the fact that virtually all of its movie awards will go to films that premiered on VOD or streaming services. In virtually every category, the movie that wins will be the lowest-grossing movie ever to win in that category. You can thank the Covid-inspired theater closings for that.
Here are some other records that might be broken Sunday night:
• If “Nomadland” or “Promising Young Woman” wins Best Motion Picture – Drama, it would be the first movie directed by a woman to win in the category, and the second to win in either of the best-picture categories.
• If Chloe Zhao (“Nomadland”), Regina King (“One Night in Miami”) or Emerald Fennell (“Promising Young Woman”) wins best director, it’ll be the second time that award has gone to a woman, after Streisand for “Yentl.

After her short-lived variety series in the late Eighties, the East Tennessee native finally went Home for Christmas with an LP and an ABC TV special in 1990. Unlike the previous album, which included several new original tunes, Home for Christmas was built around traditional Yuletide fare, including such songs as “The Little Drummer Boy,” “We Three Kings” and “O Little Town of Bethlehem.

Jon Voight is an academy award winning actor who’s career has spanned more than four decades. He is best known for his performances in films such as Midnight Cowboy (1969) and Deliverance (1972), but with his new award-winning TV series Ray Donovan (2013- ) renewed for another series and film Surviving the Wild receiving critical acclaim, Jon Voight is proving he is still at the top of his game. With the release of his new film Surviving the Wild, I was fortunate enough to get some time to talk with Jon about what attracted him to the role, working with his co-star Aiden Cullen and his favourite scenes to film.
I would like to ask you a few questions today about Surviving the Wild. What attracted you to the role originally?
I was given a first draft script and sometimes when these scripts come out the author gets inspired by something. That first draft says everything.
