Donald Trump used one of his precious days off from falling asleep during his campaign fraud trial to relax with some of his New Jersey faithful down at the Shore. The Trump campaign’s claims of 100 thousand attendees has been broadly laughed out of Jersey, with fact-averse Maga minions (including Trump henchman Roger Stone) posting photographic proof of the teeming crowd that turned out to be an actually enthusiastic throng storming the beaches of Rio de Janeiro for a 1994 Rod Stewart concert.
No matter, as Trump wowed the crowd with attacks on everyone from the legal officials involved in his criminal prosecution to local legend Bruce Springsteen, and vocal praise for, um, noted fictional serial killer and cannibal Hannibal Lecter,...

"The Wicker Man" is the gold standard of occult horror. Police Sergeant Neil Howie (Edward Woodward), a God-fearing Englishman, arrives on the island of Summerisle to investigate the reported disappearance of a young girl. Howie soon discovers the islanders are pagans and spends the movie angrily berating them. Soon, it becomes clear the cultural differences are more sinister than the proper way to worship.
The islanders' crops are failing, so Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee) has plotted a virgin sacrifice to appease their gods. No one ever said the virgin had to be a young girl; no, it's the unmarried Howie, who is burned to death in an excruciating sequence as the Summerisle villagers sing.
Despite being underserved by producer/distributor British Lion Films (to the point where Lee had to promote the film on his own time), "The Wicker Man" is now regarded as a horror classic. 2023 was the 50th anniversary of "The Wicker Man,...

Billy Joel fans who tuned into his Madison Square Garden concert special on CBS Sunday night (March 14th) were left disappointed when the broadcast was cut off in the middle of “Piano Man” for regularly scheduled local news programming.
Update: CBS announced on Monday that it will rebroadcast Billy Joel: The 100th – Live at Madison Square Garden in its entirety on Friday, April 19th at 9:00 p.m. Et/Pt, citing “overwhelming demand from his legion of fans.”
Thanks to the network’s 2024 Masters tournament coverage running long, the recording of his landmark 100th consecutive performance at Msg started 30 minutes late. CBS had heavily advertised the special as Joel’s “first-ever show to be broadcast on television,” and viewers were understandably pissed off.

In Robin Hardy's supremely creepy 1973 cult picture "The Wicker Man," a cop named Neil Howie (Edward Woodward) travels to a remote island called Summerisle to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. The citizens of Summerisle are secretive and strange and still abide by ancient Celtic religious rites. Howie, a devout Christian, is put off by their pagan weirdness. During his investigation, Howie stays at a local inn, The Green Man, overseen by Mr. McGregor (Lindsay Kemp) and his comely daughter Willow. Willow is sexually forward with Howie, something else he finds discomforting.
Later that night, while Howie attempts to sleep, Willow strips nude in her own room and gyrates seductively against the wall that neighbors Howie's. Howie can't see or hear it, but he seems to sense something strange is happening. Is she casting a spell of some kind?

Beyond the vast windows of Palm Beach’s iconic Breakers resort, the ocean sparkled as women in designer florals paraded under the lobby’s vaulted, hand-frescoed ceilings. They were headed to network with Martha Stewart and Tommy Hilfiger and swap Hermès and Gucci purses for charity at a $600-per-ticket “Old Bags” luncheon.
Later, many of them joined the daily flock gathered poolside at the historic Colony Hotel, sipping cocktails served by young men in pink shirts. Apart from the rose-hued hotel’s interior update, including a new Goop-designed bungalow, similar scenes could have unfolded a half-century earlier — which is why the new Apple TV+ show Palm Royale, set in 1969, doesn’t seem very dated. The characters played by Kristen Wiig, Laura Dern and Allison Janney could have easily mingled among this crowd, and when the show incorporated shots of The Breakers, the only thing they had to adjust for historical accuracy was the cars.

During an interview about great songs, Bob Dylan discussed the effects that two Beatles songs had on him. He said one makes him feel like he’s levitating. The other gives him a clear picture in his mind’s eye. Interestingly, John Lennon wasn’t interested in co-writing one of those songs.
Bob Dylan said this Beatles song could be played many ways and still amaze him
In 2022, Dylan released his fascinating book, The Philosophy of Modern Song. In an interview on his website, he discussed his idea of musical greatness. “I think a great song has the sentiments of the people in mind,” he said. “When you hear it, you get a gut reaction and an emotional one at the same time.
“A great song follows the logic of the heart and stays in your head long after you’ve heard it, like ‘Taxman,’ it can be played with...

The Losers head down to North Carolina for a summer job at Joyland circa 1973, a time when Rod Stewart was still in Faces, Dark Side of the Moon was the cutting edge new album, and moments could only be captured by Hollywood Girls and their professional cameras. It was also a time when local legends could flourish and remain mysterious enough to linger in our minds. And that’s of major interest to us today as we try to unravel the eerie murder within Stephen King‘s Hard Case Crime novel Joyland.
Published in 2013, King’s second Hard Case Crime novel brought the author even closer to his crime era with The Bill Hodges Trilogy, while also paving the way for his then-highly anticipated sequel to The Shining, aka Doctor Sleep. As they discuss in today’s book episode, Joyland has several connects to the entities, particularly The Shining. They...

Back in the 1990s, the Black Crowes blew up out of Atlanta, playing soulful, swaggering classic rock in an era of alt-rock irony and grunge bellyaching. Even more impressively, the two guys at the heart of the band — singer Chris Robinson and his guitar-playing brother Rich — managed to pull off their multi-platinum run while absolutely hating each other, like an American version of Oasis. But eventually the tension between Chris and Rich forced the Crowes to close up shop.

Billy Joel and Sting celebrated the first of their co-headlining tour dates in Tampa Bay by covering each other’s songs: Joel joined Sting to perform The Police’s “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” and Sting accompanied Joel for a rendition of “Big Man on Mulberry Street.”
Sting took the stage first at Raymond James Stadium on Saturday night, and Billy Joel introduced his longtime pal by proclaiming, “I saw this guy when he came with his band to the States, and I was blown away. Drumeo’s “For the First Time” video series puts professional drummers on the spot, forcing them to improvise over notable songs they’ve never heard before. The latest “First Time” clip from the instructional platform sees longtime Billy Joel drummer Liberty DeVitto in front of the cameras.
As we saw in a previous clips featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith challenged to play a Thirty Seconds to Mars song and Dream Theater’s Mike Portnoy getting pitted against a Nickelback tune, the Drumeo engineers revel in finding a song that’s both new and challenging to the drummer. In the case of the 73-year-old DeVitto, he was presented with Deftones‘ “My Own Summer (Shove It).”
Initially, DeVitto begins taking notes as he hears a drumless version of the iconic Around the Fur opener. But when the chorus hits and Chino Moreno’s screams come in, DeVitto drops his pen...

Billy Joel has shared the video for his comeback single, “Turn the Lights Back On,” his first music video in 17 years.
The video arrives after Joel debuted “Turn the Lights Back On” at the 2024 Grammys. Directed by Warren Fu and the song’s co-writer and producer, Freddy Wexler, the video uses deepfake technology from Deep Voodoo to show Joel singing the song in three different eras: His early career in the 1970s, his mid-career, and now. At the end, a brief montage of Joel’s career, life, and family plays as he sings to a fully empty-but-fully-lit theater. Watch the video below.
In celebration of “Turn the Lights Back On,” Joel’s first solo single since 2007’s “All My Life,” he also stopped by The Late Show with Steven Colbert on Thursday to discuss how the song came together, the Grammys performance, and why his seminal track “Piano Man” is actually a limerick.

While chatting with Howard Stern this week, Billy Joel revealed one major bucket list item he has yet to achieve: forming a supergroup with some of his favorite fellow musicians.
Currently in the midst of an ongoing tour, Joel explained, “I thought about putting together a band: Me, Don Henley, and Sting, and maybe John Mayer on guitar.” When asked by Stern if he’d consider inviting his good friend Paul McCartney into the mix, Joel shut down the suggestion. “He was in the super-est group of all-time. I don’t have the nerve to do that.”
However, Ringo Starr is still fair game to him. “He’s a great drummer,” noted Joel. “He doesn’t get the credit he deserves.” Watch the full segment below.

Rod Stewart has become the latest classic-rock superstar to sell his song catalog in what the Wall Street Journal reports is a nearly $100 million deal.
Stewart, whose hits include such 1970s rock staples as “Maggie May,” “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy,” “You Wear It Well” and “You’re in My Heart,” sold his interests in his publishing catalog and recorded music, as well as some name and likeness rights, to Irving Azoff’s Iconic Artists Group.

Rod Stewart has taken a swipe at fellow UK musician Ed Sheeran, dissing not only the pop star’s music, but also his hair color.
In a recent interview with The Times, Stewart was asked whether he thought timeless songs were still being made, like his own “Maggie May.” While Stewart was trying to remember the name of a “really talented” British artist, the interviewer brought up Sheeran, prompting Stewart to roast the international superstar.
“No, not Ed, I don’t know any of his songs, old ginger bollocks,” Stewart scoffed.
Considering Sheeran has landed seven straight No. 1 albums on the UK charts and released inescapable hits like “Shape of You” and “Thinking Out Loud,” we’re not quite sure how Stewart has escaped his music, but ignorance must be bliss.

The news comes as Joel is set to end his Msg residency this July with his 150th career performance at the New York arena. His first came in late 1978, when Joel, who was touring on behalf of his 52nd Street album, headlined the venue for his first time. In early 2014, he began a monthly residency as Msg’s first “music franchise,” and has sold out every show since.

Billy Joel took the Grammy stage for the first time in 22 years to live debut his new single “Turn the Lights Back On,” which he dropped Thursday night.
Wearing sunglasses, Joel played the song on piano alongside his longtime touring band and a string section. It was the culmination of an emotional evening that also saw Tracy Chapman and Joni Mitchell make stunning returns. “That’s right, ya’ll!” Trevor Noah told the crowd when it was over. “One of the greats!”

As the 50th anniversary of Woodstock approached, in 2019, I set out to find Melanie, the folk singer who shot to prominence in the late 1960s. I was curious to know how someone once so famous — known so widely that a first name alone would do — could now be so, well, not famous? Watching an early appearance of Melanie on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson only left me more intrigued about her ambivalent relationship toward fame: How could the same person be so confident and charismatic behind a guitar, but so diffident and uncomfortable chatting with Carson? I reached her by phone in Nashville, where she graciously reminisced on her Fellini-esque beginnings in Europe, and the out-of-body experience that changed everything for her: her solo performance on the first day of the Woodstock music festival, August 15, 1969. “I thought this is the end of my life.” In fact, it was just the beginning.

At his home in Catalonia, Spain, last year, Labi Siffre received the latest in a series of requests to use one of his songs in a soundtrack. Based on a synopsis of the movie, set in a boarding school in New England, the singer-songwriter signed off. “The storyline was quite nice, and I thought, ‘Yeah, Ok,’” he says. “And that’s all I remembered of it. You move on with the rest of the work you are doing.”

If life were a superhero movie, one of the major characters would be Ray Halbritter. That’s because the Oneida Indian Nation member has traveled a true superhero journey, using his connections and power not only to raise the visibility and elevate the prosperity of Native Americans, but to change the very culture of the country.
If that sounds like a heavy lift, consider Halbritter’s background, which contains elements of tragedy and triumph. He grew up in New York and New Jersey. Later, living on Native land and employed as an ironworker, he watched, heard and smelled as his aunt and uncle perished in a calamitous trailer home fire because city workers refused to set foot there.
It’s a part of his story that a screenwriter could have used to justify Halbritter’s role as either villain or hero. But this isn’t an origin story for Thanos or Bane.

British rocker Rod Stewart has said he recently turned down an offer to perform in Saudi Arabia in an effort to raise awareness of what he described as “injustices” in the country.
“I’m grateful I have the choice whether or not to perform in Saudi Arabia. So many citizens there have extremely limited choices – women, the LGBTQ+ community, the press,” Stewart said in a statement shared on Instagram explaining his decision to turn down the Saudi offer.
The septuagenarian added: “I’d like my choice not to go… to shine a light on the injustices there and ignite positive change.”
It has yet to be reported who invited Stewart to perform in Ksa or how much he was offered. An unnamed source who spoke to The Mirror newspaper said Stewart “was determined to do the right thing and couldn’t accept the offer, no matter how much money was on the table.
