- Director of photography from 1924. First major success with the big budget western Cimarron (1931). Had his best spell at 20th Century Fox in the 1940's, notably Heaven Can Wait (1943), directed by Ernst Lubitsch. He was the first to use CinemaScope (and was nominated for an Oscar) for underwater photography in Beneath the 12-Mile Reef (1953).

- Survived by his widow, Yvette Cronjager (who had sued him for divorce last December), and two young daughters.
