One of the hotly debated topics in horror movie history is who exactly directed the 1982 film, "Poltergeist" about a suburban family who moves in to a house that is very much haunted. Official records credit Tobe Hooper as the director in question, but there are those who believe it was really Steven Spielberg who called all the shots on set.
Hooper is perhaps best known for his twisted, low-budget 1974 film "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" about a deranged family who captures and murders a group of unsuspecting travelers after they run out of gas for their van. Spielberg, on the other hand, made a name for himself making slightly less disturbing blockbusters that were fun for the whole family. "Poltergeist" is based on a story written by Spielberg (who also helped write the script), and Spielberg was a producer for the film. However, because he was beginning work on his next big movie,...

“Learn it. Know it. Live it!” The best-remembered teen comedy of the ’80s is also an insightful and unabashed look at real attitudes, behaviors and motivations of young people learning to deal with adult issues. Beyond the hilarious Sean Penn and the luscious Phoebe Cates lies a talent squad of notables and stars-to-be like Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold and Robert Romanus, with appearances by Amanda Wyss, Forest Whitaker, Eric Stoltz, Nicolas Coppola and Anthony Edwards. The stunning feature directing debut of Amy Heckerling, from Cameron Crowe’s undercover high school exposé, should be acknowledged as a modern classic.

Woo Hoo! We’re girl-starved teen nerds, and we’re cooking up our own living sex toy with our home computers! John Hughes turns an infantile idea into one of his not-bad teen angst comedies, as Kelly LeBrock materializes to fulfill their wildest dreams. The idea is of course transformed into a basically benign coming-of age story … with the underlying message that we’d not all mind having Ms. LeBrock reformat our hard drive. It all begins as a bad arrested-development joke, but Hughes’ audaciousness and fine production values make this a nostalgic favorite for folk that miss their (ugh) 1980s memories.

Poltergeist (1982) plays midnights this weekend (October 6th and 7th) at the Tivoli as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli Midnight series. Tickets are $8.
Poltergeist had all the hallmarks of the Spielberg blockbuster production – a small-town suburban family setting, fantastic special effects, fast-paced action and a liberal smattering of Spielberg’s own brand of natural humor. Rumors have persisted for decades that he wrested the direction away from credited director Tobe Hooper, but the influence and style of Hooper are also evident and, rather than detracting from the considerable input of Spielberg, they complement it in a way which results in a movie of subtle originality.
Poltergeist is fun, extremely well-made, and is packed full of terrific scares. It took the opposite approach from normal; there’s no big old spooky house or gruesome back-story of some patriarch walling people up in the tower. By contrast,...

It's one of those pieces of Hollywood lore, the story that Steven Spielberg actually directed the 1982 horror classic Poltergeist. At the time Universal had Spielberg under contract which prevented him from making another movie because he was preparing to make E.T. : The Extra-Terrestrial, but he still found himself on the set of director Tobe Hooper's Poltergeist quite a bit. To this day Spielberg has not come out and said he was the actual director, but he has said that his involvement went even further than being the film's co-writer and producer.
"Tobe isn’t… a take-charge sort of guy. If a question was asked and an answer wasn’t immediately forthcoming, I’d jump in and say what we could do. Tobe would nod agreement, and that became the process of collaboration."
Spielberg would later give Hooper more credit for his creative involvement. In fact, over the past few years,...

"The Other Guys" co-stars Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell are in talks to reunite for the new comedy "Daddy's Home" at Paramount. Ferrell and Vince Vaughn were slated to star last year at a time when Etan Cohen was set to direct.
That version collapsed, but Wahlberg has now stepped in to replace Vaughn as a freeloading man who learns his ex-wife re-married an uptight radio executive (Will Ferrell). Said executive wants to be the best stepfather in the world, so when the real father returns to town it causes the two men to compete for the children's affection.
Sean Anders and John Morris are now in talks to direct from a screenplay by Brian Burns, Chris Henchy, Adam McKay and Etan Cohen. Ferrell, Adam McKay, Joseph Drake, Nathan Kahane, Matt Leonetti and Spencer Wong are producing.

We sat down with director Fede Alvarez at the Movies on Demand Lounge at the Hard Rock during the San Diego Comic-Con to get you cats the scoop on the film's inevitable sequel and more. Read on for details and info.
First on our agenda we wanted to know the scoop on if and when there will be an extended cut of the film released as an alternate extended version was referenced in the Blu-ray commentary several times. "People are always asking me about the director's cut of the film," Alvarez tells us. "Honestly though, the version out right now Is the director's cut. I feel it is the best cut of the movie and it's also my favorite. We really didn't cut much as the MPAA had us make only minimal trims, like when Jane cut her tongue in half, we could only show that for two seconds instead of three.

With his version of Evil Dead finally available on Blu-ray and DVD, director Fede Alvarez has been a bit more chatty regarding its sequel, whether it be Evil Dead 2 or Army of Darkness 2. Check it out!
Collider caught up with Alvarez. who had the following to say about what's next:
"We’re discussing. We’re still talking with Sam [Raimi] about it and trying to figure out what we should do.Maybe because I’m a child of the 80′s, but for me a sequel is a story that follows the previous one, and sometimes if you haven’t seen the original, then you don’t understand the second one. So that’s kind of my ideal sequel – a movie that continues the story, takes one character and moves on, and moves forward with that character that survived with the first one.”
Given that we adored Jane Levy, yes, bring more on with her!

Bruce Campbell: I think that guy would say, “Fuckin’ eh!” (we laugh) It was our first movie. It took us four years to finish it and it didn’t take off right away. So we didn’t know if this was a one shot deal. You know making a movie; if...

Release Date: Nov. 7
Director: Malcolm D. Lee
Writer: Robert Ramsey, Matthew Stone
Cinematographer: Matthew F. Leonetti
Starring: Samuel L. Jackson, Bernie Mac, Isaac Hayes
Studio/Run Time: Dimension Films/MGM, 103 mins.
Despite final performance from Hayes, not enough soul in this buddy film
Call it the Dark Knight effect, wherein the specter of death draws an audience to view its late stars one last time. Alas, the posthumous appearances of Black Moses and an Original King of Comedy (whose last film, Old Dogs, is slated for a 2009 release)—Samuel L. Jackson, still living, hasn’t yet attained royal status—are the lone highlights of this buddy pic. After the lead singer (John Legend) of a successful soul trio expires, back-up singers Jackson and Mac begrudgingly bury the hatchet so as to have one last performance at the Apollo Theatre. It’s a good enough excuse to dust off an Eldorado...
