Prolific neo-realist cinematographer of post-war Italian cinema. A former press photographer, he began in films as camera assistant in 1934. By 1939, he had progressed to full director of photography. Known for his penchant for using actual locations, thus imbuing his work with an authentic feel. Did his best work for Visconti (
Obsession (1943)) and Fellini (
Nights of Cabiria (1957)).
