New Delhi, April 11 (Ians) Soon after he revolutionised Indian film music with ‘Babul mora naihar’, top classical musicians, meeting in Calcutta, decided that Ustad Faiyyaz Khan, who had sung the thumri earlier, should tie a ritual thread to K. L. Saigal to signify discipleship. The Ustad wanted to meet the singer alone first, and after an hour, someone checked to find that both, in high spirits, were insisting on calling each other their ustad.
This was revealed by santoor maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, who heard it from music director S. D. Burman, a disciple of top ustads then and an eyewitness, but a more attested incident is of the Ustad, doyen of the Agra Gharana, telling Saigal that he had nothing to teach him that would make him a greater singer.

There are a number of stories about how Gulzar, who has been awarded the 58th Jnanpith Award along with Sanskrit scholar Jagatguru Rambhadracharya, became one of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated lyricists after being better known in his years as a struggler after Partition in Mumbai for his expertise in re-painting cars mauled in crashes.
The one that seems most credible, however, has come from him. Despite his skill with car colours, Gulzar’s first love was the written word and he was a regular at the Progressive Writers Association (Pwa), which was then a creative hub of just about every Titan in Hindi and Urdu literature.
It was at Pwa meetings that the undiscovered poet struck up a friendship with lyricist Shailendra, who introduced him to Bimal Roy, who, in turn, told him that he was wasting his time and talent at a car workshop.

When Zeenat Aman in her Insta post paying tribute to Feroze Khan has written that the Oxford’s word for 2023 is Rizz which means charisma and Feroze Khan was the star who had the charisma or the Rizz. Expanding the analogy further, in the world of music, it was Rd Burman aka Pancham who oozed of risk or the charisma through his music. On the eve of his death anniversary here is a tribute to the legend-Pancham.
Most of us in either of the night spots or for welcoming the new year at home would have ushered the occasion getting drooled and swooned to either of the multitude of compositions that Rahul Dev Burman aka Pancham has left for us, but how many from amongst us remember that just after four days, when we herald the new year, falls his death anniversary.

Intrinsically talented, both, separately and jointly, gave a new direction to Hindi film music. But to achieve this, Asha Bhosle and Rahul Dev Burman had to surmount a major “hurdle” – creating a new identity distinct from their illustrious and established kin: elder sibling Lata Mangeshkar and father Sachin Dev Burman.
And both succeeded – with a combination of luck, support, their own undeniable virtuosity, and above all, their first joint effort.
AshaBhosle – who is still going strong at 90, having worked with four generations of music composers from O P Nayyar to A R Rehman – added a sensuous allure and element of forthrightness for the Hindi film heroine, without becoming risque or boisterous, even as Burman adroitly used pop and jazz to good effect in electrifying film music – bringing the age of Elvis Presley and the Beatles to India.

Singer Asha Bhosle, who carved out her own independent niche and ruled the roost over the world of music, turns a ripe old 90 on Friday, and notwithstanding a long and eventful musical journey of eight decades, neither her vocal cords are tired nor has she retired…
It was back way, some 80 years ago, when a petite 10-year-old girl Asha Mangeshkar earnestly stood before a studio microphone and recorded her first playback song for composer Datta S. Davjekar, ‘Chala Chala Nav Bal…’ for a Marathi film (‘Majha Bal’ – 1943).
Though it came just a year after her father Pt. Deenanath Mangeshkar’s passing (1942), Asha’s maiden number did not exactly set the film industry on fire but she continued to get humdrum singing assignments, and like her older sibling Lata Mangeshkar, continued the uphill musical sojourn.

Mumbai, Aug 30 (Ians) Writer K.A. Abbas did not take much notice of the nondescript-looking man accompanying Raj Kapoor to his house to hear the story for a film.
After listening quietly to the over two-hour-long rendition, this man only said that it was a good story. Is that all, asked Kapoor noticing the bemused Abbas.
“Gardish mein hoon, aasman ka taara hoon,” he then responded.
Abbas, taken aback, told Kapoor that he had spent two-and-a-half hours telling his story and his unknown visitor had perfectly summarised it in one phrase.
The “nondescript man” was Shailendra, whose 100th birth anniversary falls today (August 30). Just one film old at this meeting, he would go on to become Hindi cinema’s most exemplary, innately-gifted yet self-effacing lyricist, whose songs like “Awaara hoon”, “Mera joota hai Japani”, and “Hothon pe sachai rehti hai” that made Indian film music popular across the world.

The one that seems most credible, however, has come from him. Despite his skill with car colours, Gulzar’s first love was the written word and he was a regular at the Progressive Writers Association (Pwa), which was then a creative hub of just about every Titan in Hindi and Urdu literature.

Romantics are gushing through the ears and the trigger is Dharmendra crooning – अभी न जाओ छोड़कर – to Shabana Azmi which culminates in an impromptu kiss in ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’. The original song from Dev Anand’s Hum Dono still is a swan song for the lovers especially when the lady in question is planning to leave, while the boy has the innate desire that she stays, and this yearn is not relegated to teenagers. It continues to reverberate through the ages ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ has amplified it.
I am reminded of a party that we were attending in Ranchi. It was around midnight and as the guests started walking away, I snatched the mike and started singing this evergreen song and those who had taken their cars out of the parking lots dumped it, came back and we kept on singing...

For a self-taught musician, it is rather impressive how his melodies underscored popular culture for a range of occasions in late 20th century India – be it children’s lullabies “Chandamama door ke” or “Chal mere ghode”, “Ham bhi agar bachche hote” for their birthdays, “Mera yaar bana hai dulha” and “Aaj mere yaar ki shaadi hai” for marriages, as well introducing Afghan and Arab strains into Hindi film music.
That was the talent of music composer Ravi, whose contributions went beyond providing enthralling music in films such as “Chaudhvin ka Chand” (1960), “Gharana” (1961), “Waqt” (1965), “Do Badan” (1966), and “Hamraaz” (1967).
To Ravi also goes credit for giving Asha Bhosle a prominent place in playback with songs ranging from playful “C A T cat, cat maane billii” to wistfully romantic “Jab chali thandi hawa” (“Do Badan”) to the entrancingly philosophical “Aage bhi na jaane tu” (“Waqt”), as well helping Mahendra Kapoor evolve from yet another Mohd Rafi clone,...

The eternal combination of music with films and stars, many a times their fate intertwined, with each giving a boost to the other, is considered a hallmark of Indian movies. This has been the tradition of almost all films produced in India – since the humble beginning made with “Raja Harishchandra” (1913) by the venerable Father of Indian Cinema, Dhundiraj Govind ‘Dadasaheb’ Phalke.
Among the sackful of musical blockbusters churned out by Bollywood, one of the front-rankers is K Asif’s National Award winner “Mughal-e-Azam” (1960) with a dozen unforgettable scores by the Master of the Baton, Naushad Ali. Surprisingly, this all-time megabuster did not see Dilip Kumar, the winsome Prince Salim, singing a single song on the silver screen.
All the 12 songs in “Mughal-e-Azam” were left to other characters such as the besotted Madhubala (Anarkali) and the jealous Bahar Begum (Nigar Sultana), a wandering soothsayer, or royal court musician Tansen, in the...

Malayalam star Dulquer Salmaan, who essayed the role of a serial killer with a warped mind in the psychological crime thriller film ‘Chup: Revenge of The Artist’, has called his role in the film the most experimental one for him till date.
The film has been directed by R. Balki, who is known for his movies such as ‘Cheeni Kum’, ‘Paa’, ‘Shamitabh’ and ‘Pad Man’. The film, which pays homage to the late director Guru Dutt’s film ‘Kaagaz Ke Phool’, which was severely panned by the critics, tells the story of an artist who goes on a killing spree after he gets continuously criticised.
Talking about his character, Dulquer Salmaan said: “Stepping into the shoes of the serial killer Danny has been the most experimental role till date. Identifying with someone who wreaks havoc across the city murdering critics, the mere thought is frightening. The narrative delves into every...

Introduction: The year was 2013. I got an invite to attend a programme in the Sahir Ludhianvi auditorium in Govt. College Ludhiana. It was a pleasant surprise. I found the auditorium full of fans of Sahir Ludhianvi who created such a visible memoir for this son of soil, that four hours just slipped like a blip and there was no hurry to conclude it! I had then decided to write about this legendary poet and lyricist and the brain gave a gentle nudge to write about him as a part of the series celebrating 75 years of Independence through cinema. The occasion served when his death anniversary was celebrated on 24 October 2022.
After having returned from Pakistan good, he came to Mumbai to try his luck as a lyricist. Though he made his debut as a lyricist in 1948 with Azadi Kee Rah Mein. 1950 was the year when he announced his arrival with a...

Singer Amit Kumar signed an autograph for ‘Indian Idol 13’ contestant Debosmita Roy from Kolkata and appreciated her performance on his father and legendary singer Kishore Kumar’s romantic track ‘Tu tu hai vahi’ picturised on Rishi Kapoor and Poonam Dhillon from 1982 film ‘Yeh Vaada Raha’.
Apart from this, she also amazed him and the judges by choosing a difficult track ‘Tere mere milan ki yeh raina’ which is inspired by Bengali song, ‘Jodi Taare Nayi Chini Go Sheki’ originally sung by Kishore Kumar, and the song was recomposed by S.D. Burman for the Hindi version from the 1973 film ‘Abhimaan’.
Amit, who is known for his songs such as ‘Main Ik Panchi Matwaala Re’ from the film ‘Door Ka Raahi’, ‘Aati Rahengi Baharein’ in ‘Kasme Vaade’, ‘Laila o Laila’ for ‘Qurbani’ and many more said while praising the contestant: “Beautifully sung. Kya awaaz hai! (What a voice) The way you felt...

A tabla player with a prominent theatrical troupe, he went on to partner with a harmonium player to create – and guide – the duo that seamlessly melded the strains of Indian classical and popular music with Western melodies to create an array of immortal tunes for films starring titans, from Raj Kapoor to Shammi Kapoor to Rajesh Khanna.
Shankar-Jaiskishan was not the first duo to give music for Hindi films – that signal honour went to their own ustads Husnlal-Bhagatram – but they were the most successful, right from their first venture in 1949, down till the dawn of the 1970s.
Going just by the metric of Filmfare Awards, their record of the most Best Music Awards (nine) stood for nearly four decades till A R Rahman picked up his 10th in 2012. And though they were runners-up in most nominations (20), behind Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s 25, 10 of their nominations were in consecutive years since 1959.

From a family of prominent lawyers, he was expected to follow in their footsteps, but instead chose a career in the fledgling Hindi film industry – and uncharacteristically, not as a hero. Virtually dragooned by his legendary boss taking over a lead role, despite the director’s opposition, he, in his first-ever take, muffed up a simple scene with the heroine, and then, left the villain with a fractured leg.
That, in 1936, was the rather farcical start of the career of Ashok Kumar, who was born on this day in 1911.
Undaunted, he went on to establish himself not only as Hindi cinema’s first superstar as the 1940s began, but also one who was known for his air of naturalness and his willingness to reinvent himself and experiment with playing morally ambiguous or anti-hero roles.

Dev Anand And World Tourism Day
Had he been alive on the eve of the World Tourism Day (celebrated on 27th September every year), Dev Anand would have taken the fans of cinema to a retrospective of his films and show cased to the world, how through his films he contributed to creating inquisitiveness and excitement for a country. His films shot on foreign locales kindled the element of wanderlust which otherwise is laid buried deep inside the heart, burdened by the day-to-day existence. Dev Anand indeed was the man who single-handedly was instrumental in kindling the latent urge among the Indians to travel to the different nooks and corners of the world as also to different nooks and corners of the countryside through the cinematic oeuvre that he left behind when he left the mortal world.

Raj Kapoor’s naive innocence, as seen in “Mera joota hai Japani” to “Sab kuch seekha hamne”, Dilip Kumar’s restrained sorrow in “Toote hue khwabon” or “Yeh mera diwanapan hai”, Shammi Kapoor’s exuberant ebullience in “Chahe koi mujhe jungli kahe”, or Dev Anand’s cheerful jauntiness in “Khoya khoya chand” to “Gaata rahe mera dil” — all owe their origin to one man.
One of Hindi cinema’s most inspired, capable yet self-effacing wordsmiths, acknowledged duly by his peers — Raj Kapoor called him his “Pushkin” — and seen as inspiration by a later generation of lyricists, especially Gulzar, Shailendra, born Shankardas Kesarilal on this day (August 30) in 1923, left an indelible impact on film songs.

Known for originality in his stories and story telling, for presenting unexplored themes in a commercial format, ‘Chup’ is filmmaker R Balki’s most ambitious film till date. Ambition not in big budget terms but in scale of thought. Releasing on 23rd September, 2022, it’s a romantic psychopath thriller, a thought he had after ‘Cheeni Kum’ and decided to write it much later. The poster revealing the release date released today.
Speaking of the same R Balki said, “Chup is special for more than one reason. For me the biggest reason is it marks the official debut of Amitabh Bachchan as a music composer. Amitji saw Chup and played an instinctive original melody on his piano as he relived the film. It was his way of expressing his feelings for the film, paying a tribute. This composition, his gift to the film, will be the end title track of Chup.

One of the finest poets of 20th century Urdu literature, Majrooh Sultanpuri was born on this day 101 years ago. His contribution to the Hindi film industry as a lyricist is also phenomenal, so much so that any writing or research work on the Bollywood music scene would be incomplete without his mention.

Indian cricket and Bollywood share several attributes in common. Both stir the emotions of their countless devout fans. Both are regarded as integral to South Asian culture. Both are the heart, pride and soul of South Asia.
Therefore, it is only fitting that with the retirement of legendary Indian Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, a Bollywood song has been dedicated to him.
The special song doing the honours is ‘Dhoom Machale’ – the title track of Aditya Chopra’s forthcoming Dhoom 3 starring Katrina Kaif, Aamir Khan, Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra in the lead roles.
Aamir Khan, a close friend of Tendulkar’s, explained the symbolism of dedicating ‘Dhoom Machale’ to the cricket legend. According to Ibn Live, Khan stated:
“Through his entire career he has created ‘Dhoom’ in every step, on every pitch, in every cricketing country, in every bowler’s nightmare, in our hearts, in every cricket field across the world,...

It is being reported that Aditya Samanta; the grandson of legendary filmmaker Shakti Samanta, wants to remake his grandfather’s 1969 classic hit Aradhana. It starred Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore in the leading roles and is famous for being the film which rocketed Khanna to superstardom. The film did overwhelmingly well during its initial release and went onto win a number of Filmfare Awards, including Best Film, Best Actress (Sharmila Tagore) and Best Male Playback Singer for Kishore Kumar. Aradhana is also noted for its enthralling soundtrack composed by S.D. Burman and which has become an institutional classic.

She was Arundhati Roy – the above-mentioned films were made by her then husband, Pradip Krishen. But we’re more interested in the second film – In Which Annie… was about a group of students in an Architecture College in Delhi,...
