His portrayals of the idiosyncratic, moustache-fanatic, and rule-imposing Bhawani Shankar or the stern Acp Dhurandhar Bhatawadekar in a brace of breezy Bollywood comedies are undeniably unforgettable, but he played a more realistic role in ‘Guddi’ – that gentle deconstruction of the glittering yet hollow edifice of filmdom.
Utpal Dutt, as Prof Gupta in the 1971 film, knows neither scolding nor advice will change the filmstar-struck teenager (then Jaya Bhaduri in her first Hindi film), and the only way out is to let her indulge in fascination with films and learn first-hand the artificiality, heartbreaks, and struggle that lies behind them.
Portraying a teacher, with innovative ideas, was not difficult for Dutt, who was born on this day (March 29) in Bengal’s Barisal (now in Bangladesh) in 1929. He had been an English teacher in (then) Calcutta’s South Point School in the 1950s and earned his students’ admiration for his insights into literature,...

There are a number of stories about how Gulzar, who has been awarded the 58th Jnanpith Award along with Sanskrit scholar Jagatguru Rambhadracharya, became one of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated lyricists after being better known in his years as a struggler after Partition in Mumbai for his expertise in re-painting cars mauled in crashes.
The one that seems most credible, however, has come from him. Despite his skill with car colours, Gulzar’s first love was the written word and he was a regular at the Progressive Writers Association (Pwa), which was then a creative hub of just about every Titan in Hindi and Urdu literature.
It was at Pwa meetings that the undiscovered poet struck up a friendship with lyricist Shailendra, who introduced him to Bimal Roy, who, in turn, told him that he was wasting his time and talent at a car workshop.

"I found Bimal Roy at his desk, writing something, when I entered his cabin. As he stopped writing and looked up, he appeared to be taken aback. He fixed me with a steady gaze and kept staring at me in silence… After a while, he turned to the people seated at the rear end of the cabin and said to them in Bengali: ‘Is this the man you had in mind? What sort of a joke are you playing on me?’
"Apparently, he wasn’t aware that I knew Bengali. Without even offering me a seat, he said to me, ‘Mr. Sahni, my men have made a mistake. I can see that you are totally unsuited to play the sort of role I wish to present in my film’," Balraj Sahni wrote in his autobiography ‘Meri Filmi Atamkatha’.

Ranchi’s poet Anwar Ali will turn 80 on October 11. One may ask, who is this Anwar Ali? It is none other than Amitabh Bachchan, the superstar of Hindi films – who made his film debut as a character with this name over five decades back.
In “Saat Hindustani” released in 1969, by journalist, scriptwriter, and filmmaker Khwaja Ahmed Abbas, the actor played the role of a poet who resided in Hindpiri, Ranchi. However, the character is entirely fictional i.e. no poet of this name ever lived in Ranchi.
The story of the film revolves around the fight to liberate Goa from Portuguese occupation. Seven people from different states of the country leave for Goa on this mission, one of them being Anwar Ali. In one of his dialogues in the film, Amitabh introduces himself saying: “Main hoon Anwar Ali. Bihar ke Ranchi ka rehne wala hoon aur shayri karta hoon.”

Despite the countless times this has been repeated; Amitabh Bachchan is without a doubt one of the greatest actors to have graced the silver screen in the history of Indian Cinema. Yet what is intriguing to know is that the 70 year old King of Bollywood almost did not enter the film industry. Amitabh always had a passion for acting and would participate in college drama during his student days. His brother Teji Bachchan supported this and in the late 60s, he entered Amitabh into the Filmfare Talent Hunt Contest; the same contest which gave female heartthrob Rajesh Khanna his break in the industry.
Despite travelling to Bombay to take part in the contest, Amitabh unfortunately did not have an impact and was eliminated from the contest. He took part in film auditions also, but was rejected by directors due to his looks and eccentric height. He even applied to All-India Radio,...

Mumbai, Sep 26: Thursday marks the 90th birth anniversary of Dev Anand and it is time to revisit some of his best movies like "Hum Dono", "Tere Mere Sapne" and "Guide".
Here is a list of the 10 best films of Bollywood's evergreen star, who died in 2011 aged 88.
"Rahi" (1953): One of Dev Saab's unknown gems. Based on litterateur Mulk Raj Anand's story "The Wayfarer", the film about the relationship between British colonists and Indians was shot in a neo-realistic light by progressive intellectual director K.A. Abbas. Very seldom did Dev Anand step into the territory of the unwaveringly experimental cinema. He did so.

It is Zohra Sehgal's inspiring journey as a theatre, film and TV artiste, that makes her birth centenary so special There are not many who have the privilege of Amitabh Bachchan pulling a chair for them. Gone are the days when the script was the weakest link of a movie and multi-starrers were a sureshot way to success. As the mindsets of audiences change, Bollywood scriptwriters foresee a dignified growth for their kind though problems persist.'Now there is a need for good scripts because people have realised that films don't work only on stars. There is awareness, but that is not enough,' Kamlesh Pandey, who scripted 'Rang De Basanti' and 'Delhi-6', told us.In recent times, Vishal Bharadwaj, Ashutosh Gowariker, Karan Johar, Madhur Bhandarkar and Jaideep Sahni have shown the power of the pen by writing some of the best movies.
