- David Abel was born on December 15, 1883 in Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands. He was a cinematographer, known for Holiday Inn (1942), Top Hat (1935) and Swing Time (1936). He died on November 12, 1973 in Los Angeles, California, USA.
- His parents were Russian refugees who settled in Holland, where he was born. The family eventually emigrated to the US.
- Leon Shamroy was his nephew. (according to taped interview with Mr. Abel July 24, 1942.
