Although he occasionally uses a broad brush dipped in primary colors while fashioning his admiring portrait of Bob Zellner, the grandson of a Ku Klux Klansman who improbably evolved into a civil rights activist during the early 1960s, filmmaker Barry Alexander Brown shrewdly and intelligently avoids most of the “white savior” clichés common to such scenarios in “Son of the South.” Based on Zellner’s memoir “The Wrong Side of Murder Creek: A White Southerner in the Freedom Movement,” and available starting Feb. 5 in limited theatrical runs and on digital platforms, Brown’s well-crafted and period-persuasive biopic strikes a dramatically sound and emotionally satisfying balance between the moral awakening of its white protagonist and his relationships with sometimes encouraging, sometimes skeptical Black leaders and foot soldiers.
The movie’s opening minutes indicate just how dangerous it could be for a white Southerner to be viewed as a “race traitor” in the days of segregation,...

I had been sitting back wondering whether Ava DuVernay's "Selma" would be ready in time for this year's upcoming awards season. Paramount already has a couple of things to play with, from Jason Reitman's "Men, Women & Children" to Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar." Well, add another, as DuVernay's film has just been slated for a Christmas Day limited release. The film, which is being produced by Oprah Winfrey and Brad Pitt's Plan B shingle, is still shooting in Atlanta, Georgia and Montgomery and Selma, Alabama, but I guess there is enough faith that the editing will come together in time. It of course tells the story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s struggle to secure voting rights for all during the heated civil rights movement of the 1960s. This led to President Lyndon Johnson signing the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965. The film will go wide on Jan.

With The Company, Coco Before Chanel, Howl, Ginger & Rosa, Devil’s Knot and American Hustle under his belt, and a role in J.C. Chandor’s upcoming A Most Violent Year, Alessandro Nivola is quickly becoming the go-to actor for directors working on period pieces. Now, he’s added another one to his busy schedule in the form of civil rights biopic Selma.
Nivola will play civil rights activist John Doar in the movie, which Ava DuVernay (Middle of Nowhere, ABC’s Scandal) is directing for Paramount and Pathe. Though the film is being marketed as a Martin Luther King Jr. biopic, it actually focuses on “the three attempts of black marchers to walk from Selma to Montgomery, the capital of Alabama, in 1965 in order to gain voting rights. The first two times they were beaten back by police, and by the third time it had become a national crusade.”

Selma is the story of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s historic struggle to secure voting rights for all people – a dangerous and terrifying campaign that culminated with the epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, and led to President Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

With Lee Daniels tackling a large swath of American history and racial politics in one fell swoop with his upcoming "The Butler"-or-insert-new-title-here, perhaps he already scratched his Civil Rights itch. In fact, back in 2010, he had already said he wasn't keen on doing two movies about the same subject back-to-back. If you remember, he was once slated to direct the Martin Luther King drama "Selma," and it was oh so promising. Had it come together, the historical drama would've looked something like this: David Oyelowo playing Martin Luther King, Hugh Jackman signed up as Sheriff Jim Clark, Liam Neeson portraying Lyndon Johnson; Robert De Niro attached to star as racist governor George Wallace; Cedric The Entertainer was set to play minister and activist Ralph Abernathy while Lenny Kravitz was also on board as activist Andrew Young. Well, financing didn't arrive and it all fell apart but...

The-Dream (born Terius Nash) has been behind some of pop music's biggest hits. From Britney Spears, to Justin Bieber, to Rihanna, Nash has worked with major names in music.
But the one person he won't be working with anytime soon? Keyshia Cole.
In an interview with HuffPost Live on Wednesday, Nash spoke about Cole's recent feud with his longtime collaborator, Beyonce Knowles, stemming from Cole's unprompted critique of Beyonce's new single, "Bow Down / I Been On."
In the video (shown above), Nash says, "Especially from musicians, to musicians, it's like we know our struggles already and we just literally keep throwing darts at each other. I don't really understand it. But you know, she's entitled to her opinion, whatever it is that she feels. I have nothing but love for Keyshia - I worked on her last album and we went on a tour maybe two or three years ago.

Atlanta police are still on the hunt for the man who shot and killed up-and-coming rapper "Slim Dunkin" on December 16, but new disturbing details have emerged in the case.
On Tuesday, Wsb-tv in Atlanta reported that the Waka Flocka Flame affiliate and Brick Squad Monopoly member was shot in an altercation that began over a stolen piece of candy.
"The information we're getting, it's unconfirmed, but witnesses are saying this whole thing started over a piece of candy," homicide detective David Quinn told "Action News" on camera.
According to witnesses, Dunkin, born Mario Hamilton, grabbed a piece of candy from another man while inside an Atlanta recording studio, which led to an argument and then a fistfight. The scuffle ended with Slim being shot once in the chest.

Of all of the intriguing plays coming to Broadway this season, "The Mountaintop" was the one I needed to see.
Perhaps it feels like a bit of an obligation, but in the best way; in the way we go to a religious service, but then leave delighted because the spirit is lifted and we're reminded of what is right.
Theater can certainly have that effect, though not often.
Samuel L. Jackson as the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King is excellent. Angela Bassett as Camae, a chambermaid who spends the night before his assassination conversing with him, is nothing short of spectacular.
As magnificent as they are -- and there is no "but" coming, they are simply magnificent -- this is a play that needs to continue when these two stars move on to other projects.
It is necessary to pay tribute to King, and to honor him and to remember...

On the heels of my below post about the hurdles on the path to getting a Marvin Gaye film produced comes this expose by Deadline writer Mike Flemming, on the reasons why the Paul Greengrass Martin Luther King Jr assassination film was recently dropped by Universal Pictures, despite initial reports that the studio had greenlit and was backing the project.
At the time of the announcement that Universal had said goodbye to the project, there was really no confirmation on what exactly the reasons were. There was what they said, and what the traveling rumors were.
Well, now we know more…
A potential holdup to not only Greengrass’s film, but also Lee Daniels’ long-in-gestation Selma, has been Andrew Young! The civil rights activist, member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (Sclc) during the 60s Civil Rights Movement, a supporter and good friend of Martin Luther King, Jr., who played...

Of the handful of Mlk projects currently in the works, it looks like Paul Greengrass’ Memphis - a film that will deal with the events leading up to King’s assassination in Memphis, Tennessee, while he was trying to organize the city’s sanitation workers in spring of 1968 – will take its shots first!
Originally believed to be set up at Focus Features, Deadline says this afternoon that Universal Pictures will house Greengrass’ Memphis, which is being produced by uber-producer, Scott Rudin (The Social Network and True Grit).
Production is scheduled to begin in June – mere months away. So, needless to say, the search begins for who will play Mlk, his wife, Coretta, and King’s associates in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (Sclc) (James Bevel, Ralph Abernathy, Hosea Williams, Andrew Young, Bernard Lee), and others.
The other Mlk projects in the works include, of course, Lee Daniels’ Selma, Oprah’s HBO miniseries,...

The release of Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, one of the most hotly-anticipated albums of the year. The 13-track LP completes something of a comeback narrative for West that began with the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards (when he was ostracized for crashing the stage during a Taylor Swift acceptance speech and went underground for a while) and was built up over the course of the past year with some key live performances, the "G.O.O.D. Friday" download series and the recently-released short film "Runaway." In fact, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is so dense and full of gems that it's necessary to take each song and break it down to its bare elements. This time around, we take a look at the references on "So Appalled."
