Godfather of Harlem has been renewed for a fourth season at MGM+.
The new season, starring Forest Whitaker and co-created by Chris Brancato and Paul Eckstein, will begin production next year in New York.
Season 4 will feature Bumpy Johnson (Whitaker) as he continues his bloody war for control of Harlem against New York’s Mafia families, while contending with the emergence of a potential rival in newly arrived Black gangster Frank Lucas. After Malcolm X’s (Jason Alan Carvell) tragic death, Bumpy must also grapple with his daughter Elise’s (Antoinette Crowe-Legacy) involvement with the Black Panthers.
According to MGM+, Godfather of Harlem is the No. 1 acquisition-driver for the platform, as well as one of its top original series.
“After such a long time away, I’m so excited to be returning to set alongside such an incredible cast, crew, and creative team, under the powerful leadership of Chris Brancato.

Ruth E. Carter made Oscar history last year when she became the first African American to win Best Costume Design. After earning nominations in 1993 and 1998, the third time proved to be the charm when she won in 2019 for “Black Panther” (coincidentally her pal Spike finally won his first Oscar that night for his “BlacKkKlansman” screenplay). Carter could well win a bookend this year for her work on “Dolemite Is My Name.”
In this well-received biopic, Eddie Murphy portrays Rudy Ray Moore, a comedian who proved the naysayers wrong when he became a film star in the 1970s. That decade has come back into fashion with the costume designers branch of the academy, reaping bids for Danny Glicker (“Milk” 2009), Michael Wilkinson and Mark Bridges.

When it comes to the best costume design category at the Academy Awards there are few who shine brighter than the legendary Colleen Atwood. This talented woman has been nominated 12 times — including this year — and, out of those times, has taken home the trophy three times so far. Let’s take a deep dive into Atwood’s career and see how she stacks against her peers.
As mentioned above, the 68-year-old costume designer has been up for numerous Oscars. Films for which Atwood was just nominated for include: 1994’s Little Women, 1998’s Beloved, 1999’s Sleepy Hollow, 2004’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, 2007’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, 2009’s Nine, 2012’s Snow White and the Huntsman, and 2014’s Into the Woods. On a June visit to the Doctor Who studios in Cardiff, we enjoyed a round-table chat with Peter Capaldi about series 9…
Despite being hamstrung by a list of not-for-discussion topics as long as the Mara (plot specifics, new monsters, returning characters, series arcs…), you can always rely on Peter Capaldi to fill an interview to the brim.
It helps that he’s fluent in nerdy Doctor Who detail, from anecdotes about his old pal Jim, designer of the original Zygons, to being able to reel off the name of Jon Pertwee’s season eight stuntman, to chatting about Chumblies.
Along with a handful of fellow journalists at the Cardiff studios earlier this year, we spoke to Capaldi about all of the above, series nine, looking back at his first year in the role, his own fandom, and more...

From Monty Python's Terry Jones comes Absolutely Anything, starring Simon Pegg. The late Robin Williams steals the show, though...
Absolutely Anything has been on comedy fans' radars for a long time. Terry Jones' first directorial effort since 1996's The Wind In The Willows is touted as a zany sci-fi comedy with shades of Douglas Adams and Monty Python's Flying Circus, with a cast that includes Jones' fellow Pythons, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle and Michael Palin, alongside other comedy stars like Simon Pegg, Eddie Izzard, Joanna Lumley and Robin Williams.
Alas, the material doesn't live up to the star calibre, nor the literally limitless potential suggested by the title. Loosely based on H.G. Wells' fantastical comedy short story The Man Who Could Work Miracles, the film begins when a group of power-crazed aliens (voiced by the Pythons) discover a probe with information on Earth's culture and decide...

Terry Gilliam’s second solo directorial effort, Time Bandits, remains an oddly hilarious bridge between his work with the Monty Python gang and his subsequent dystopian solo films like Brazil, Twelve Monkeys and even last year’s The Zero Theorem. Drenched in English dry wit and warped by the cartoonist’s soul that pervades all of Gilliam’s work, the film sees a gang of little people abandoning their posts as the creator’s right hand men to leap through the corridors of time pillaging as many treasures as they can drag with them, while a child gets wrapped up in the mischief along the way. Of its period in more ways that one, it feels a bit like a valiant attempt at emulating Spielberg with Gilliam-Goggles on.

The first full-length trailer for Disney’s new live-action adaptation of Cinderella was this week and featured tantalising glimpses of what promises to be a visually gorgeous film. The costumes, designed by three time Academy Award winner Sandy Powell, appear to be absolutely stunning.
With a clever mix of the eighteenth century, the 1830s, and a little 1950s couture thrown in for good measure (Powell has been quoted as saying she was aiming for the look of “a nineteenth-century period film made in the 1940s or ’50s”), Powell has created another jewel to add to her already over-bling crown. Here is a quick rundown of some of the looks we’ve been teased with…

“What a costume designer does is a cross between magic and camouflage. We create the illusion of changing the actors into what they are not. We ask the public to believe that every time they see a performer on the screen he’s become a different person.”

Price: DVD $29.95, Blu-ray $39.95

There's adventure and fantasy afoot in Time Bandits.
The 1981 adventure fantasy Time Bandits is a energetic and engaging voyage through time and space from Terry Gilliam (Brazil).
In the film, a boy named Kevin (Craig Warnock) escapes his gadget-obsessed parents to join a band of time-traveling dwarves. Armed with a map stolen from the Supreme Being (Ralph Richardson, The Four Feathers), they plunder treasure from Napoleon (Ian Holm, The Lord of the Rings trilogy) and Agamemnon (Sean Connery, The Man Who Would Be King)—but Evil (David Warner, Titanic) is watching their every move.
Featuring a darkly playful script by Gilliam and Monty Python’s Michael Palin (who also appears in the film), Time Bandits is at once a giddy fairy tale, a revisionist history lesson, and a satire on technology gone awry.

The Letter, about the early life of Tom Baker, is heading for production soon. Here are some details...
Comfortably one of the funniest autobiographies we've ever had the pleasure is Tom Baker's Who On Earth Is Tom Baker?, which we talked about in the Den Of Geek Book Club (which is a thing), right here.
Now, however, news has reached us, via The Digital Fix, that there's a one-off drama heading to our screens that tells the story of Tom Baker's early life. A casting call for a project called The Letter has appeared online, with the focus on "how a chance letter to the BBC when working as a builder's labourer lead to him becoming the most iconic Doctor Who".
The following roles, lists the casting call, are all required for a single day of filming. Given that contracts are on a "deferred profit share" basis and...

Monty Python’s Terry Jones reveals why he hasn’t made a film in 18 years and whether there will ever be a new Monty Python film.
Shooting begins on Monday (March 24) on Absolutely Anything, a high-concept comedy starring Simon Pegg and Kate Beckinsale.
It marks the first time that Monty Python member Terry Jones has directed a film since The Wind in the Willows in 1996.
“I sort of gave up on the film industry when The Wind in the Willows wasn’t distributed,” Jones told ScreenDaily of the film that was critically well received but only received a limited relase. “It was so appallingly handled.”
While it is clear those wounds have yet to heal, Jones thought “it was about time” he made another film and is “very excited” to be back in the directors chair.

What a busy twelve months it’s been for costume design. Really though, this art, or craft, or business (Deborah Nadoolman Landis insists it is definitely a business) gets more talked about each year. 2013 was especially exciting however as it seemed every month something even more thrilling arrived to fawn over. In the last few weeks alone we have had The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Sleepy Hollow, and now American Hustle and The Wolf of Wall Street on the horizon. Dipping back further, it was Stoker that got us excited about subtext, The Great Gatsby that slammed the lid on that twenties revival once and for all, and Behind the Candelabra that put Michael Douglas in a 16ft fox fur cape and white brocade jumpsuit.

Over the years there have been hundreds of unsung contributors behind the scenes, and this article seeks to celebrate a handful of those who put in one helluva slog for our benefit.
Oh, and in researching this article I discovered that Dorka Nieradzik – who worked on Logopolis, Revelation of the Daleks and Silver Nemesis to name but a few – now appears to be Clive Owen's personal Hair and Make Up Artist.
It's not really relevant or anything, but...

Stars: Sean Connery, John Cleese, Shelley Duvall, Ian Holm, Michael Palin, Ralph Richardson, Peter Vaughan, David Warner, David Rappaport, Kenny Baker, Malcolm Dixon, Mike Edmonds, Jack Purvis, Tiny Ross | Written by Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin | Directed by Terry Gilliam
Time Bandits was first released in 1981. A family adventure film that sported a fantastic and massive cast of names, with the likes of Sean Connery, John Cleese, Shelley Duvall, Ian Holm and Michael Palin, among others. It was like a fantastical family film with the cast of Monty Python.
Director and another former Python, Terry Gilliam, who went on to direct such incredible cinematic events as Brazil, Twelve Monkeys and Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas was behind the camera here, much like he was in the Monty Python movies and it feels very similar to his previous work in many ways. Surreal and at times incredibly weird, Time Bandits just feels like a Gilliam film.

Man of Steel recently hit cinema screens amidst a blaze of controversy, with many questioning director Zach Snyder’s dark and humourless take on the Superman legend. Conversely some have praised his approach as the breath of fresh air the character needed. If the film itself has been splitting audiences so too has the costume design. Principally this stems from Superman’s overhauled hero suit. Depending on who you ask it is either bravely innovative or missing a pair of red underpants.
We speculated that this revamped suit is actually underwear, a foundation garment worn by all Krypton men beneath their armour or robes. However, even though this was our interpretation, it is not necessarily shared by Man of Steel’s costume designers Michael Wilkinson and James Acheson. Thankfully Mr. Wilkinson got in touch with Clothes on Film to explain what we have missed. His insight, we think you will agree,...

It's impossible to talk about a Superman movie without talking about what he's wearing. Superman's costume has become one of the most easily identifiable in all of pop culture, and his symbol has now appeared on literally everything you can imagine. The guy's a legend. So costume designer Michael Wilkinson had his work cut out for him when he signed on for director Zack Snyder's Superman reboot, "Man of Steel."
Thanks to an extraordinary opening weekend, it's a sure bet that Wilkinson's interpretation of Superman has become the interpretation for a whole new generation of superfans. We got a chance to talk with Wilkinson about taking on the project, working with frequent collaborator Zack Snyder and - of course - Superman's red underwear.
Splash Page: Superman is maybe the most recognizable character in all of fiction. Was it a daunting task to redesign him?...

It’s ironic that director Zach Snyder was against using those famous red pants for the outside of Superman’s new costume when the suit itself is underwear. This bizarre notion actually makes sense as all costume choices in Man of Steel are intended as functional, at least contextually so. There was no need to wear pants over pants as it were; Superman is already half-undressed as it is.
When M. Night Shyamalan’s sci-fi thriller After Earth was released a few weeks ago it received a critical bashing for, among other things, poor special effects, weak acting and clunky dialogue. After watching Man of Steel these feel like unfair assertions. Henry Cavill Man of Steel: Relative big-screen newcomer Cavill handicapped by Zack Snyder’s green-screen focus [See previous post: "Man of Steel Review: Superman Movie Sensory Enhanced, Heart Deprived."] Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, and Diane Lane (as Clark’s adoptive mother) are all Oscar-nominees and/or winners with the ability to thrive under the distracted eye of a director who only cares about lining up the next green-screen shot. Less so in the case of relative newcomer Henry Cavill. The man is an undeniably gorgeous specimen and he looks just right in the beautifully-designed Superman suit by costumers James Acheson and Michael Wilkinson. What doesn’t fit so well is Superman conforming to the Nolan-inspired, Warner Bros.-approved mold of dark, conflicted superhero that does neither Cavill nor Superman any favors. (Photo: Henry Cavill Man of Steel.) At his best, Kal-El is a combination of troubled teenager trying to find his place in the world and Christ figure charged with saving humankind.

Depending on how clean you want to go into Man of Steel, you could skip watching this 13 minute featurette altogether. Of course we had to watch it because the re-designed Superman suit is mentioned. Take a look if you are curious, although with under two weeks to go until the film is released it is not long to go cold turkey.
Michael Wilkinson and James Acheson are costume designers for Man of Steel. We still do not know how their responsibilities were divvied up. Did they work as a team? Did one take civilian wear and one hero/alien costumes? No idea until we interview them (Hint Hint). Only Michael Wilkinson talks on the video though, mainly about how the new suit had to feel organic to Superman’s world and the alien characters around him. Just by the by, in close-up the Spandex hexagonal fabric resembles the Tron Legacy light suit,...

If this new trailer for Man of Steel was the actual movie, then it would be difficult not to stand up and salute at the end. This is three minutes of very worthy, very dramatic, very promising footage for one of the most anticipated films of the year. Best of all though, we really get to see the new Superman suit in action.
Costumes designers for Man of Steel are two legends of the industry, James Acheson (Doctor Who, Spider-Man) and Michael Wikinson (Watchmen, Tron Legacy). Quite how these men divided their time on the film remains a tight-lipped mystery for now, but being as both have significant sci-fi experience we have to assume it was a close collaboration rather than split down the middle (i.e. civilian and hero wear). It has already been commented upon how dark and drained of colour the new Superman suit is; seemingly it...

A new 3 minute trailer has arrived for 'Man Of Steel' on the back of a viral video message from General Zod (Michael Shannon), in which the Kryptonian demands that the people of Earth hand Kal-El over to him.
From Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures comes “Man of Steel,” starring Henry Cavill (“Immortals,” TV’s “The Tudors”) in the role of Clark Kent/Superman, under the direction of Zack Snyder (“300,” “Watchmen”).
A young boy learns that he has extraordinary powers and is not of this Earth. As a young man, he journeys to discover where he came from and what he was sent here to do. But the hero in him must emerge if he is to save the world from annihilation and become the symbol of hope for all mankind.

Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) 20th Century Fox Blu-ray and DVD Available Now
Six-year-old Hushpuppy (fearless newcomer Quvenzhané Wallis) lives in the “Bathtub,” a southern Louisiana bayou community far removed from the civilized world. Her father Wink (Dwight Henry), a poor fisherman, keeps her at arm’s length but ensures her well-being within the cultural confines of their rough-and-tumble society. Seen through the eyes of the feisty Hushpuppy, the lines between myth and reality are blurred. An impending storm coincides with the melting of the arctic ice caps (and the thawing of some mythical creatures), which changes the world of the Bathtub forever. This heartbreaking little fable came out of nowhere last summer after building some positive buzz on the festival circuit. Shot on 16mm film for under $2 million, Beasts is a true independent film: a fiercely original and moving...

In development since 2007 and nurtured for at least 20 years by curator Deborah Nadoolman Landis since her days as president of the Costume Designers’ Guild (Cdg), the exhibition ‘Hollywood Costume’ finally opens at the V&A museum. This is the costume exhibition to end all costume exhibitions; everything from Judy Garland’s gingham pinafore and ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz, to Keira Knightley’s burgundy silk gown from Anna Karenina, to Robert De Niro’s ‘King Kong Company’ jacket, check shirt, jeans and even boots from Taxi Driver. Hollywood Costume is a rush; an awe-inspiring journey through the meaning and history of contemporary, period and mo-cap costume design utilising projections, interviews, lectures from A-list actors, installations and even a specially commissioned score.

Roaming the internet vastness as I usually do, I noticed that someone over at the Shh Boards has posted some detailed descriptions of Man Of Steel concept art that was shown at a WB Tradeshow.
As you might know, the show started off with the Jor-El trailer that has been released in theaters. After that the concept art was shown that seems to confirm information that Man Of Steel will showcase a war torn Krypton.
The art was drawn by James Acheson who worked on Daredevil and Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man as well as Michael Wilkinson who worked on 300 and Watchman.
Check out the detailed description below, and again, Warning! Contains spoilers.
- Henry Cavill in Supes suit full body, and then a half body shot of Cavill using the monochromatic suit possibly, the uncolored suit for some early test shot.

Something nasty and futuristic is afoot in Terry Gilliam's Brazil.
The Criterion Edition of Terry Gilliam’s landmark 1985 cult, sci-fi-flavored classic movie Brazil, filled with its countless supplements and the infamous “Love Saves the Day” edition of the film, finally makes its Blu-ray debut!
Universal issued a no-frills Blu-ray edition of Brazil in July, 2011 which we favorably reviewed at the time, but we can’t deny that we’re pretty excited to check out Criterion’s Blu-ray version.. This new edition ports over all the materials from the company’s masterful, extras-laden 1999 multi-disc DVD release which was generally considered to be the godfather of all Criterion and studio special editions to come.
Written by Gilliam, Charles McKeown (both of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus) and Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare in Love), Brazil remains Gilliam’s greatest directing/writing accomplishment, a perfect amalgam of his Monty Python roots,...

Commencing this Spring, two exhibitions are taking place at the Getty Museum relevant to period costume design in movies: ‘Fashion in the Middle Ages’ analyses how manuscript illuminators depicted dress from tradesmen to kings to pops, while ‘Paris: Life and Luxury’ examines the rich wealth and inventiveness of 18th century Parisian costume.

Claimed to be designed by Spider-Man's James Acheson, Snyder is quoted as saying, "We felt that Superman needed to step away from the old circus strong man, red underwear on the outside, flowing cape design that was looking very dated by today's superhero movie standard. The design James [Acheson] created will once again put Superman at the forefront of superheroes worldwide." Follow the link for more.

Well, first proper look anyway, here in the still untitled Spider-Man reboot directed by Marc Webb. There is not much to see, though it is a nice shot of star Andrew Garfield in the full outfit, minus mask.
In this image it does not appear that costume designer Kym Barrett (The Matrix, Eragon) has reworked the classic (or should that be ‘ultimate’?) Spider-Man uniform too heavily. The ‘webbing’ is less raised, as is the neckline, the spider logo somewhat ‘sketched’ and the overall fit sleeker, but wisely much of the basic Tobey Maguire guise, as interpreted by James Acheson for Spider-Man (2002) and its sequels, remains. Oh, and there is a backpack too. Read into that what you may.
As soon as we get more we’ll say more.

The site also includes a history of the scarf, which begins: When Tom Baker was cast as the Doctor, costume designer James Acheson picked up a load of wool and asked a knitter called Begonia Pope to knit a scarf for Tom. She inadvertently used all the wool Acheson had given her, resulting in a scarf that was some twenty feet long. This unusual scarf was well received by the cast and crew and after being shortened slightly, it was worn by Baker beginning on "Robot." The pattern for this scarf is shown here. The scarf in its original form was only seen in "Robot" and "The Sontaran Experiment," which was taped right after Robot. The...

But we were fortunate to have time to discuss his career at length too and get some great stories in the process.

An Italian film director sets out to recreate an epic Chinese story as an independent film and entirely in English and goes on to win nine Oscars. Sound unlikely? Well, in most cases it probably would be, but Bernardo Bertolucci did just that with The Last Emperor in 1987 as he set out to tell the story of a 3-year-old boy who became Emperor of China with 400 million people as his subjects on an unlikely path to becoming a gardener in Peking. NEW YORK -- Producers Frank DeMartini and James Acheson have signed a nonexclusive, first-look, five-picture deal with Avi Lerner's Millennium Films. The pact provides Acheson and DeMartini with full financing, with distribution handled by Millennium. The duo recently wrapped Mozart and the Whale for Millennium, which was penned by Ron Bass and stars Josh Hartnett, Radha Mitchell and Erica Leerhsen. Whale was helmed by Petter Naess (Elling) and centers on a young couple (Hartnett, Mitchell) who have Asperger's syndrome, a type of autism. Additional films in development under the deal include The Pirates of Palawan, a modern-day pirate tale that takes place in the Philippines during the fall of the Marcos regime, and Michael Strogoff, a sweeping epic based on the Jules Verne novel of the same name.
Variety reports that Josh Hartnett has signed on to star in Mozart and the Whale, with Rachel Weisz currently negotiating for the female lead. Based on a 1995 LA Times article and scripted by Ron Bass, the love story will be directed by Elling's Petter Naess for Millennium Films. The central couple are two savants with Asperger's syndrome, a kind of autism, whose disabilites sabotage their budding relationship. Robert Lawrence, Frank DeMartini and James Acheson are set to produce; interestingly it's Hartnett who's been driving the project, which he'll do before moving on to Brian De Palma's The Black Dahlia opposite Mark Wahlberg.
