Cohen Media Group & Cohen Film Collection have debuted an official trailer for a 2K restoration re-release of the classic 1979 film The Europeans, the first in James Ivory's Henry James triptych. Set in the fall of 1850, a few miles outside Boston. The household of the dour Mr. Wentworth receives two unannounced visitors from Europe, Eugenia and Felix, the daughter and son of his half sister. The film deals with "the social and moral clashes between the New World and the Continent." This first premiered at the 1979 Cannes Film Festival, and went on to earn one Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design. The costume design and its production design "solidified the 'state-of-the-art' (and impeccably researched) period trappings that have since become synonymous with Merchant Ivory." Henry James novels have made terrific movies; this precise, strongly-felt adaptation expresses interior feelings that James — the master of ambiguity — may not have intended, yet seem essential to the story. A dynamic young female public speaker transfixes all around her, and is taken in and mentored by an activist for the women’s movement. But will a conventional, confining, repressive romance undo a perfect political relationship? The Merchant-Ivory-Jhabvala combination does a powerful book full justice; Vanessa Redgrave got the awards attention but it’s also one of the best films by Christopher Reeve.

The quintessential shot in Robert Aldrich’s filmography is that of a close-up, held for a smidgen longer than the normal length one would think appropriate for such a shot. The face the camera is focusing on is usually a signifier of the most central element in Aldrich’s films: tension. Whether it’s melodrama (Autumn Leaves, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?), war pictures (Too Late the Hero, Attack!), or Westerns, both sober and jocular (Ulzana’s Raid and 4 For Texas, respectively), ideological and external forces wrestle within the psyche that defines Aldrich’s cinema. If you’ve not worked it out yet, then maybe you need to take a few notes from Arrow Academy’s latest release, Sidney Lumet’s Network.
When Howard Beale (Peter Finch) the news anchor for the Ubs Television Network finds he is losing his job because he no longer pulls in the ratings he announces live on television he will commit suicide live on television next week. Causing controversy the network give him another chance, only to lead him to yet another rant to the audience.

In I Cain't Say No, she sang: "I cain't be prissy and quaint / I ain't the type that can faint." Annie was a none-too-bright farm girl, but Holm was a smart, witty and sophisticated actor, whom everybody seemed to like. Many years later, during the interval of a Broadway show, she came out on stage and made a plea for her mental-health charity. It was done with such sincerity and passion that the audience could not fail to pay up.

The actress who rose to fame in 1943 after her critically acclaimed role in the Broadway production of Oklahoma! had been hospitalized two weeks ago with dehydration and wanted to spend her final days with her husband and other relatives in her New York apartment, where she passed away early Sunday morning.
"I think she wanted to be here, in her home, among her things, with people who loved her," Holm's great-niece Amy Phillips said.

Chicago – Very few movies are as wonderfully weird as “Kiss Me Deadly,” a film that clearly influenced decades of work that would follow from “Blue Velvet” to “The Adjustment Bureau.” Recently released in a beautiful Criterion edition, “Kiss Me Deadly” is a film that history almost forgot but that found its way to the right people who recognized this unique gem as something worth cherishing.
