Saying goodbye to Sam Waterston’s Jack McCoy after 30 years on Law & Order was never going to be easy.
He’s been with the show and its various spin-offs through some pivotal storylines – not bad for a role he almost passed on!
He’s been one of the few constants throughout the original series, and after Thursday’s episode, Jack is well and truly done with his career as the District Attorney.
The good news? It was an emotional last chapter that put things into perspective for Jack as he said one final goodbye to the job he’d done for years.
But where did it all go wrong?
Well, it’s a long story. Let’s dive in!
Jack was effectively forced to resign

The longest-running cast member of Law & Order is being removed from the series after appearing in 400 episodes. Sam Waterston’s character, Manhattan Da Jack McCoy, wrapped up his last case on Thursday’s episode of the show before stepping down.
Despite this, he remained dedicated to seeking justice until the very end. Tony Goldwyn will now take over his role as Da Nicholas Baxter.

[This story contains spoilers from the Feb. 22, 2024 episode of Law & Order, “Last Dance.”]
Jack McCoy left the world of Law & Order the way he came into it — in a courtroom.
Sam Waterston said goodbye to the long-running NBC franchise in Thursday’s episode, ending his 19-season, 405-episode run as prosecutor-turned-New York County District Attorney Jack McCoy. Waterston’s final episode saw Jack returning to the courtroom to finish trying a murder case in which the defendant is a billionaire with close ties to New York’s mayor.
The episode, titled “Last Dance” and written by showrunner Rick Eid, constructs a solid but not slam-dunk case against Scott Kelton (Rob Benedict), who’s accused of killing a former employee, Veronica Knight (Shay Guthrie), who was about to go public with an accusation that he had sexually assaulted her several years earlier. McCoy instructs prosecutor Nolan Price (Hugh Dancy) not to accept a plea deal with less than a 10-year sentence...

Let’s start here: Master, written and directed by Mariama Diallo, is a film with ambitious scope and intention. That it does not quite succeed in its endeavors is certainly a disappointment. My goodness, is there a lot going on here. At an elite New England university, Gail (Regina Hall) accepts a new position as “master” (dean) of students. Meanwhile, freshman student Jasmine (Zoe Renee) does her best acclimating to a new setting and roommate. Meanwhile, a politically minded literature professor (Amber Gray) who tells students to “just call me Liv” is being reviewed for tenure. All three are Black women wrestling with being ostracized, prejudiced against, and patronized to. Sometimes all at once by those who “would’ve voted Obama for a third term.”
The tone Diallo attempts striking in Master is purposely fluid. At first glance a horror picture, it often settles into something more like a social drama,...

Written and directed by Richard Tanne, Chemical Hearts is based on the book Our Chemical Hearts by Krystal Sutherland. The film sees Lili Reinhart (Riverdale and Hustlers) as Grace Town and Austin Abrams as Henry Page, with Reinhart also serving as an executive producer alongside Sutherland and Jamin O’Brien.
Chemical Hearts is a story about Henry Page, a 17-year-old high school student who has his eye on becoming the next Editor-in chief of his school newspaper. His life seems ‘normal’, mundane and simple. However, he believes he is a hopeless romantic even though he’s never actually been in love before. One day he meets transfer student Grace Town, and from the get go, you know she has a story to tell, with her quietness and the resilience she has for keeping personal information just that – personal. They are automatically drawn to each other with their love and passion for literature,...

Amazon Prime Video has released the official trailer for “Chemical Hearts,” a romantic drama starring Lili Reinhart and Austin Abrams, set to premiere on the streaming service on Aug. 21.
The three-minute trailer introduces the two high schoolers, Henry Page (Abrams) and Grace Town (Reinhart), and teases the development of their romantic relationship.
“You are never more alive than when you’re a teenager,” Henry says in the trailer. “Your brain is flush with chemicals that can turn your life into a story of epic proportions, and yet, by the start of my senior year, nothing interesting had ever happened to me. Then something finally happened.”
Based on Krystal Sutherland’s novel “Our Chemical Hearts,” the coming-of-age drama follows Henry, a 17-year-old who considers himself a hopeless romantic. He’s focused on becoming the editor in chief of his high school paper and getting admitted to a good college, until Grace joins his class.

"I used to be good at socializing..." Amazon Studios has unveiled acial trailer for a teen romance coming-of-age drama titled Chemical Hearts, adapted from Krystal Sutherland's novel "Our Chemical Hearts". The emotionally honest film is "an unapologetic, coming of age story involving a hopeless romantic and a young woman with a mysterious past." A high school transfer student finds a new passion when she begins to work on the school's newspaper, where she meets seventeen-year-old Henry Page, who has never been in love. Described as "a journey of self-discovery that captures the thrills, disappointments and confusion of being a teenager." Starring Austin Abrams & Lili Reinhart, with Sarah Jones, Kara Young, Coral Peña, C.J. Hoff, Shannon Walsh, Bruce Altman, and Meg Gibson. It looks charming and witty and tough, but it also looks like so many other teen romance films. Hopefully there's something unique about this one. Here's the first...

Back during his time hosting The Daily Show, Jon Stewart was among the smartest and most biting political satirists out there. Ever since he departed, Stewart’s voice has been missing from the day to day discourse. Now, for his sophomore feature as a filmmaker, he’s tackling a political satire with Irresistible. More mainstream, at least on the surface, than his directorial debut, Rosewater, this is a sneakily effective delivery system for his beliefs. Initially seeming like a broad comedy, Stewart has a subversive streak just beneath the surface, waiting to be sprung on viewers. Hitting VOD services this week, Stewart is about to make his voice heard once again. The film is a political comedy and satire, looking at how the most extreme versions of politics can seep into even a very small town. In the aftermath of the 2016 election, Democrats are looking for a new strategy, and...

Imagine “The Conversation” — and its closed-up character’s sonic filter on a troubled world — as a platonic romance instead of a paranoid thriller, and you’ll have some idea of how Michael Tyburski’s feature debut “The Sound of Silence” plays as it studies the debilitating obsessiveness of an urban loner confronted with human complexity.
Chilly yet compassionate, anchored by both a characteristically deep-set portrait of off-putting intelligence from Peter Sarsgaard and a poignant turn by Rashida Jones, it’s a delicate oddity that won’t necessarily replace any of your favorite cinematic New York couplings, but it’ll remind you why we often respond to an unlikely pairing built around smarts, sadness and hope.

New York City has a musical quality to all of its chaos. Stand in the right spot in Manhattan and you can hear it. The Sound of Silence knows and embraces this. An independent drama that contains a wholly lived in feel, there’s a vibe her that gets under your skin in the best way possible. Rather hypnotic in its soundscape and overall style, there’s a lot more her than meets the eyes. In fact, if it weren’t for a few small flaws, this would be a rather remarkable film. The plot is deceptively simple. Peter Lucian (Peter Sarsgaard) is a “house tuner” in New York City, with the keen ability to figure out what sound in your home is throwing off your entire life. A thorough check of your apartment could lead to the need for a new toaster, for example, as the various electronic hums...

What if our happiness wasn’t solely predicated on our fruitful relationships, career success, or spiritual fulfillment, but rather the sounds around us? It’s this idea that drives music theorist and self-proclaimed house tuner Peter (Peter Sarsgaard) to the point of maddening obsession in The Sound of Silence. Following a Sundance premiere, Michael Tyburski’s debut film will arrive next month and IFC Films have now released the first trailer.
I said in my review, “The directorial debut of Michael Tyburski has a compelling hook as we go on this journey of aural perfection, but the follow-through leaves something to be desired. In terms of its thematic predecessors, The Conversation and Blow Out set an impossibly high bar, but even the narrative propulsion of those classics is lacking here as the story plays out in roughly the same monotone key.”

"The silence is full of sound." IFC Films has finally debuted an official trailer for The Sound of Silence, an indie drama that marks the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Michael Tyburski adapting his own short film (Palimpsest). This premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and it's opening in select theaters in just a few more weeks for those curious about checking it out. The Sound of Silence stars Peter Sarsgaard as a successful "house tuner" in New York City, who calibrates the sound in people's homes in order to adjust their moods. But he meets a client with a problem he can't solve, no matter what he tries. The film is nicely described as "a serene contemplation of people living in their modern environment—and their desire to understand and even control it." The cast includes Rashida Jones, Tony Revolori, Austin Pendleton, Bruce Altman, Tina Benko,...

"You may call me, 'Mrs. Grey.'" The tagline on the poster below is pretty gratuitous, and oh-so-obvious in a way that will make you roll your eyes, which is annoying yet also oddly surprising that the MPAA let them get away with this. Universal has revealed the final trailers for Fifty Shades Freed, the final sequel in the Fifty Shades series (thank goodness). Please, once again, just ignore this and move right along. Chicago – While offering a veritable sex scene smorgasboard, “Fifty Shades Darker” fails to offer much in the way of anything that is actually sexy. As the mousy Anastasia Steele and the billionaire Mr. Grey, Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan are slightly more comfortable in their roles than they were the first time around.

In a world where having a mental disorder is treated as a hugely negative and stigmatized scenario, actor, writer, and director Paul Dalio hopes that his film, Touched With Fire, might help change people’s minds about people who are bipolar, and who have mental illnesses in general.
Starring Katie Holmes and Luke Kirby as title characters Carla and Marco, the film features two poets who are bipolar and fall in love in a hospital after getting into some trouble when trying to live on their own. Soon enough, they go through various stages of emotions and relationship statuses until they have to bring their relationship to light with their parents, played by Christine Lahti, Griffan Dunne, and Bruce Altman.

Chicago – How do you explain air? That is what our thoughts are, after all – carbon-based cells interacting with circumstantial environment, sending the “message.” What if those cells send the thought receiver something outside “normal”? This is the exploration in the new film ‘Touched With Fire.’
Rating: 3.5/5.0
This is narrative fiction, but it brings out another side of the debate regarding the mental condition, and the judgement associated with it. The main characters in the film have Bipolar Disorder. Now, notice the word “disorder” – out of order, not orderly. The medical profession has defined the Bipolar condition is an anomaly. “Touched With Fire” seeks to take back the disorderly part of that definition, and doe it through the story of two people who take it to another place. There are clichés in the film, and scenes that were a bit too cute, but the writer/director Paul Dalio actually has Bipolar condition,...

Chicago – The status of individual mental acuity and control is like the fingerprint of the brain. There are disorders that have been diagnosed, which alters that fingerprint into different types of behavior. A new film, “Touched with Fire” – directed by Paul Dalio and featuring lead actor Luke Kirby – seeks to bridge an understanding of Bipolar Condition, the particular mental journey of highest (and ultra-creative) highs and mind numbing lows.
That was a one sentence attempt at trying to explain a complex state of being – an affected individual’s behavior is like a snowflake, different in all. In his new film “Touched With Fire,” writer/director Paul Dalio seeks to provide normalization to the Bipolar nature, in a fictional narrative. Actor Luke Kirby, a TV and film journeyman, has a career defining performance as Marco, a writer who goes from independence to institutions to his parent’s home, never seemingly under control.

Depicting mental illness in film is hard for two reasons. One is the fact that actors are playacting. This may not be the case across the board—performances could be inferred from personal experience—but I’d say a majority comes from a place of research and mimicry. The second reason deals with audiences having preconceived notions about mental illness that are generally misguided. It’s difficult to show someone an honest portrayal when they don’t believe it’s honest. Perhaps filmmakers shouldn’t care about this subsection of viewers because they’re walking that line for the afflicted so they can see they aren’t alone. Expand that circle to include individuals willing to learn and replace false truths and you find those who Paul Dalio hopes appreciate Touched With Fire.

"Are we a mistake, Carla? Are we a mistake?" Roadside Attractions has debuted the first trailer for Paul Dalio's indie romantic drama Touched With Fire (formerly known as Mania Days when it premiered at SXSW), starring Katie Holmes as a manic depressive who falls "crazy in love" with someone just like her. At the psychiatric hospital she meets a fellow bipolar patient, played by Luke Kirby, and they end up on a "passionate, yet unhealthy love affair". This looks much more powerful and beautiful than I was expecting, especially in the final 30 seconds of this trailer, so give it a chance and let it play all the way to the end. The cast includes Christine Lahti, Bruce Altman, Griffin Dunne and Alex Manette. You might just be intrigued. Here's the first official trailer for Paul Dalio's Touched With Fire, originally from Yahoo: Holmes stars as a manic depressive...

Following a number of acclaimed performances in films such as The Da Vinci Code and Margin Call, Paul Bettany is transitioning from actor to writer-director for his new venture.
Titled Shelter, Bettany stays behind the camera, making his debut both as a director and as a writer, with the screenplay being an original work from him. Jennifer Connelly and Anthony Mackie take on the lead roles, with Amy Hargreaves, Bruce Altman, and Rob Morgan in supporting roles.
The film’s synopsis is as follows.
Hannah and Tahir fall in love while homeless on the streets of New York. Shelter explores how they got there, and as we learn about their pasts we realize they need each other to build a future.
Bettany recently delved into the details of this film on the Nerdist podcast, discussing the inspiration for the film as a homeless couple that used to camp out outside...

"What are you doing?" "Who are you?" "Who am I?!" Screen Media Films has debuted a trailer for Paul Bettany's directorial debut titled Shelter, co-starring Jennifer Connelly and Anthony Mackie. The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year, and received some rave reviews which are quoted in this rather beautiful trailer. Shelter explores how two homeless people in New York City met and fell in love, and it looks like a very intense and riveting story. The cast includes Amy Hargreaves, Scott Johnsen and Bruce Altman. This may actually be worth seeing, at least to get a look at Bettany's directing debut. Take a look! Here's the official theatrical trailer (+ poster) for Paul Bettany's Shelter, direct from YouTube: Hannah and Tahir (Jennifer Connelly, Anthony Mackie) come from two different worlds. But when their lives intersect, they’re at the same place: homeless on the streets of New York.

In the opening minutes of the pilot for USA’s Mr. Robot, superhacker Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek) meets with the shifty proprietor of a chain of coffeeshops. Over the course of their conversation, Elliot reveals the flaws in his cybersecurity—flaws that enabled Elliot to uncover this fellow’s immense cache of child pornography. The topic shifts: Who is Elliot? What does he want? Money? Before long, though, Elliot heads out and the cops storm in to mete out justice. That, it would seem, will be the blueprint for Mr. Robot: the story of yet another maladjusted genius with One Weird Trick for solving crimes while disregarding the rules, man. He’ll track down hidden bad guys, overcoming his obvious social awkwardness and seemingly timid nature, and expose them to the world with the help of cutting-edge, buzzword-heavy technological innovation. After all, this is USA, the home of Burn Notice,...

“I know what it’s like to be different. I’m very different, too.”
That confession, uttered by protagonist Elliot on Mr. Robot‘s series premiere, might just be the understatement of the year.

Those working on Cbgb have wasted no time in compiling their supporting players. We’ve seen the main actors (Alan Rickman, Rupert Grint, Malin Akerman, Joel David Moore, and Stana Katic) jump into the fray over these past two and a half weeks, but today has brought seven (seven!) new performers into the historical music scene fray. First, THR informs us that Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins will take on the legendary Iggy Pop; Deadline says Johnny Galecki (The Big Bang Theory) is appearing as manager Terry Ork; and Variety reports that Mickey Sumner (The Borgias, Imogene) will play singer Patti Smith.
Additionally, Steven Schub (24, Chicago) will play DeeDee Ramone; Evan Alex Cole (She’s Out of My League) is appearing as Richard Hell; Kerry Bische (Red State) has been cast in the part of Mary Harron (some research indicates that this is, in fact, the American Psycho director); and...
