Exclusive: Fox has given a script commitment with penalty to Zoo P.D., an animated comedy from Family Guy executive producer Alex Carter, Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and Fox’s Bento Box Entertainment.
Written by Carter, Zoo P.D. follows the police force stationed inside the eighth best zoo in California. In their attempts to handle the unruly customers and improve the park, the show hits upon a hard truth: at the end of the day, we’re all just animals.
Carter executive produces with Kaplan, Steve Michaels, Diane Galardi and Matt Alvarez. Kapital Entertainment and Fox’s Bento Box Entertainment co-produce; Kevin Marco is overseeing for Kapital.
This would mark Kapital’s second animated comedy series at Fox following HouseBroken, which aired for two seasons. It also was co-produced by Kapital and Bento Box.

Paramount's Eli has found its leading man — or, boy.
Captain Fantastic actor Charlie Shotwell will play the titular role of Eli in director Ciaran Foy's (Sinister 2) psychological horror, which tells the story of a secluded clinic where a boy with a rare disease is being treated. Soon, the clinic becomes a haunted prison with no way out.
David Chirchirillo penned the 2015 Black List script, which was revised by Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing. Trevor Macy is producing via his Intrepid Pictures banner, along with Bellevue Productions' John Zaozirny. Matt Alvarez will executive produce, with Melinda Nishioka co-producing...

Hammond brothers let go of approximately 20% of workforce.
Broad Green co-founders Gabriel and Daniel Hammond have closed their production department and laid off 15 of the 75-strong staff following a string of under-performing films.
Gabriel and Daniel Hammond, who serve as CEO and chief creative officer respectively, plan to reconfigure Broad Green’s operations and find a new way to source films.
The acquisitions team is expected to be on the ground in Toronto and other festivals, and the company has scheduled a November 22 release for Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones caper film Villa Capri.
Around 50 development projects have gone into turnaround. Gabriel Hammond, a former Wall Street wunderkind who along with his brother used their own money to fund Broad Green, confirmed the development on Wednesday in a remarkably frank interview with Deadline Hollywood in which he said the brothers accepted all blame for failure.

Broad Green: How Wall Street Wealth, A-List Talent, and Brash Decisions Made an Indie Player Implode
It takes guts to join the indie distribution fray, especially when the market is challenged by big buyers like Netflix and Amazon Studios (which, along with Annapurna, is optimistically taking over its own theatrical distribution) and television is chasing down the hottest indie talent. Even one-time high-flyer The Weinstein Co., which once knew better than anyone how to play the indie game, is evolving to survive during these changing times.
When Wall Street billionaires Gabriel Hammond, 38, and his brother, Daniel, 34, launched independent producer-distributor Broad Green Pictures three summers ago, Hollywood was skeptical. It was a strange time to reinvent a dying economic model.
Now, after trying to use arcane algorithms to determine what movies to make, Gabriel has decided to pull the plug on production. The breaking point was the July 14 release of John Leonetti’s “Wish Upon,” which grossed $13.2 million on a $12 million budget. (Theaters return about half of the take to the distributor,...

Broad Green Brothers Gabriel and Daniel Hammond Reveal Shift to Bigger Films and 'Bad Santa 2' Plans
Gabriel and Daniel Hammond aren't the first interlopers to crash the gates of Hollywood with deep pockets and ambitions. But the Washington, D.C.-reared duo, who sold their hedge fund, SteelPath, to OppenheimerFunds in 2012 for what was said to be several billion dollars, have every intention of sticking around. Since launching Broad Green Pictures (named for the street they grew up on in Potomac, Md.) in 2014, the brothers — whose parents took them to old movies — have assembled a staff of 90 that includes Straight Outta Compton producer Matt Alvarez as production president. When Alvarez took

When Wall Street billionaires Gabriel Hammond, 37, and his brother, Daniel, 33, launched independent producer-distributor Broad Green Pictures two summers ago, Hollywood was skeptical about its prospects. In a time when even the Weinsteins are struggling to survive, it was a strange time to reinvent a dying economic model.
Now Broad Green is laying off around 6 percent of its staff, all of whom work in the publicity department, the company confirmed to IndieWire. Broad Green’s publicity head Adam Keen, a former Warner Bros. publicity exec, has resigned. Marketing and communications personnel are traditionally the first casualties of cutbacks in Hollywood.
The layoffs were unsurprising. Ken Kwapis’s Sundance comedy “A Walk in the Woods” starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte managed $30 million, but that couldn’t counterbalance films like Ramin Bahrani’s well-reviewed real estate thriller “99 Homes” ($1.7 million domestic) and Sarah Silverman’s depressive drama “I Smile Back” ($58K). Folks, we have a new frontrunner in Best Picture. Over the weekend, the 27th annual Producers Guild Awards were given out and The Big Short pulled the upset, taking the illustrious Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures. The Producers Guild of America (or PGA) are the best guild when it comes to forecasting Oscar, so the odds now favor the Academy Awards citing The Big Short in Picture, as opposed to Spotlight, the previous frontrunner. It’s a bit of a surprise, but perhaps one we should have seen coming, frankly. The more you think about it, the more sense it makes. Basically, if you go by PGA history, the winner here is what wins with Oscar. You can make the case even that not only has The Big Short now locked this up, but Amy has done the same in Best Documentary Feature and...

The Producers Guild of America announced on Tuesday its slate of nominees for the best films of 2015, and once again, this awards season is proving divisive, based on the eclectic mix of movies recognized by the guild -- and those that were surprisingly snubbed.
Unexpected honorees included "Ex Machina" and "Sicario," two films released earlier this year to critical acclaim, but which have been absent from most awards season chatter until now. Other populist fare represented on the PGA's nomination slate included the hit "Straight Outta Compton," as well as apocalyptic flick "Mad Max: Fury Road," which is proving itself a strong contender to muscle its way into a Best Picture Oscar nomination as it continues to snatch statuettes and nominations.
As with most awards, there were bound to be some glaring omissions, but the biggest one of all may be "Carol," which failed to earn one of the PGA's 10 Best Film slots,...

Denis Villeneuve’s cartel thriller Sicario received timely awards attention in The Producers Guild Of America’s (PGA) theatrical motion picture nominations on Tuesday while Carol and Star Wars: The Force Awakens failed to make the cut.
The PGA’s motion picture selections are a strong harbinger of the likely spread of best picture Oscar nominations announced on January 14 and as expected the likes of Spotlight, The Revenant and The Martian are in the mix.
However the omission of two largely fancied films will dampen spirits among their campaign teams and casts serious doubt on their Academy Awards prospects given the significant constituency of Academy voters who are producers.
In the last decade, eight winners of the PGA’s Darryl F Zanuck Award have gone on to claim the best picture Oscar including Birdman last year. While films that miss out on PGA nods can earn Academy Award nominations, historically their chances of winning the Oscar are very...

The brothers-in-law are back: before Kevin Hart enlists alongside Dwayne Johnson for Central Intelligence next year, the comedian-cum-actor will reunite with co-star Ice Cube for action-comedy sequel, Ride Along 2.
Directed by Tim Story from a script by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, the soon-to-be-released feature follows Ben Barber (Hart) and James Peyton (Ice Cube) who accept an assignment to infiltrate a drug cartel in Miami and prevent any trace of the illegal substance from falling into the wrong hands. Such a daring mission naturally requires an understanding of keeping a low profile which, as today’s brand new trailer reveals, isn’t something that our bumbling duo are terribly well versed in.
Having earned a stellar $159 million off the back of a budget of $25 million, it’s small wonder why Universal fast-tracked the release of a sequel. It’s now less than two months from release, and the latest...

Relativity Media has brought its pre-bankruptcy grievances with key lender Colbeck Capital back to light, an updated bankruptcy court filing said Friday. A corrected disclosure statement in the studio’s plan to emerge from Chapter 11 formally accused Colbeck, ex-Relativity CFO Andrew Matthews and multicultural division president Matt Alvarez of conspiracy and breach of fiduciary duties — all in an effort to sabotage the company’s hopes to refinance its debt and equity. “Colbeck intentionally diverted sources of equity and debt financing away from the company’s efforts and instead sought to have such sources committed to their clandestine plan,” the documents said.

Brothers in blue and soon to be brothers-in law Ben Barber (Kevin Hart) and James Peyton (Jump Street‘s Ice Cube) will return in typically explosive fashion for next year’s action-comedy sequel Ride Along 2, and today Universal has showcased a brand new trailer for the high-octane romp.
Sending the boys on a mission to Miami, the bumbling duo are on the hunt to sabotage a drugs ploy that has resulted in dangerous and illicit product surfacing in their home town. We can just imagine the ‘this time, it’s personal’ slogans adorning the marketing material in the build-up to release.
Remaining true to the formula of the original – it did bag Universal $154 million at the worldwide box office, after all – this new trailer for Ride Along 2 will read like familiar territory for those who have seen Tim Story’s 2014 actioner, which didn’t win a lot of fans in critics circles.
