Power can look like a lot of things, and nothing quite exemplifies that like the world of comic books. In this case, the soon-to-be-defunct DC Extended Universe (Dceu).
The interconnected DC universe hasn’t been around as long as its Marvel counterpart, but the Warner Bros. franchise has served up a kaleidoscopic roster of heroes, supervillains and antiheroes that can do serious damage to their opponents. But they’ve got different ways of doing it.

He could grab you by the arm and fly 100,000 feet into the air before dropping you back to the ground where your body would most definitely be destroyed. The Flash can run so fast that he can literally alter history and bring the world to the brink of destruction. Or,...

Back in 2018, it was reported that CBS was rebooting a 1980’s series, Magnum P.I., which turned Tom Selleck into an A-list star thanks to the American Crime drama. The show lasted eight seasons, With Selleck winning an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1984. Plus, the series was a rating juggernaut, so it makes sense why CBS opted to bring back the show for the new generation. This time, a Latino lead was spearheading the cast, as Jay Hernandez – who notably played El Diablo in Suicide Squad – was chosen to play Thomas Magnum.

Marlon Wayans’ new comedy inspired by his life and career is on the move. Starz has taken in for development Book of Marlon, with Wayans set to star, co-write and executive produce. The project, which was previously in development at HBO Max, hails from Sherman’s Showcase and South Side creators Diallo Riddle and Bashir Salahuddin, Wayans’ longtime producing partner Rick Alvarez (Marlon), Michael Rotenberg and Warner Bros. TV.
Book of Marlon was originally set up at HBO Max in 2020. There was chatter that the project at some point had been unofficially greenlighted to pilot but it never went to production. I hear the comedy was eventually put on hold and ultimately into turnaround in early 2022 when the producers took it out and found a new home for it at Starz.

Exclusive: Jesse Murphy, a former scripted executive at Wayans Alvarez Productions, has partnered with James Sears Bryant, founder of National Litigation Law Group and former president of ProServ Basketball, to form Jesse James Films. The two first collaborated on Only Human, the satirical Off-Broadway musical.
The Culver City-based newly formed production company is backed by a seven-figure intellectual property fund. Murphy will oversee development and the formation of strategic partnerships with first-look term deals that do not have discretionary funding.
Projects currently in development include a horror anthology series about an insomnia pandemic based on the book Sleep Over by H.G. Bells. Stephen Susco (The Grudge) is set to adapt with Ryan Lewis and Broken Road Productions producing; a limited series (produced with MadRiver Pictures), titled, Nightbird based on the New York Times Book of Note, Girls, by Frederick Busch with a screenplay by Anthony Tambakis (Warrior) and Joe Berlinger attached to direct; as well as a television series adapted from Image Comic’s McMlxxv, by Joe Casey, which also is being produced by Marlon Wayans and Rick Alvarez via Wayans Alvarez Productions.
Their film slate includes an adaptation of Confidential Source Ninety-Six: The Making of America’s Preeminent Confidential Informant from the novel by C.S. 96. Peter Landesman (Concussion) will pen the screenplay and 3 Arts Entertainment is producing.
“In short, we are a traditional production company with an intellectual property fund,” said Murphy. “We’re actively acquiring and developing properties while simultaneously partnering on projects that are brought to us.”
Said Bryant, “Jesse and I suffer from the same creative itch. It’s our mission to match the most elevated global content with the town’s most exciting voices…and have some fun doing it.”
Jesse James Films is repped by 3 Arts Entertainment with Jay Shanker of Crowe & Dunlevy.

Stars: Marlon Wayans, Bresha Webb, Michael Ian Black, Glynn Turman, Debbi Morgan, Molly Shannon, Grace Junot, Robert Pralgo | Written by Rick Alvarez, Mike Glock, Marlon Wayans | Directed by Michael Tiddes
Sextuplets, directed by Michael Tiddes, stars Marlon Wayans as not one but six characters in a Peter Seller’s/Eddie Murphy inspired comedy. A feature that not surprisingly plays out more like the Nutty Professor than Dr Strangelove but is nothing like the disaster you would imagine. Sextuplets follows Alan, who is inspired by his pregnant wife, to track down his real family after her Judge father uncovers his original birth certificate. In his efforts, Alan discovers one sibling after another, more absurd and distinctive as time goes on.
Say what you will about Wayans as a performer. However, he and his entertainer family have created an empire of cinematic/television ventures that have shaped a highly successful level of entertainment for audiences.

Once the funniest and most ubiquitous family in Hollywood, the Wayans siblings — Damon, Keenen Ivory, Kim, Shawn and so on — have largely faded from the scene in recent years, leaving youngest brother Marlon (now nearing 50) to carry the mantle. Audiences may not be showing up for sendups like “Scary Movie” and “Dance Flick” like they used to, but Marlon has figured out a foolproof solution: Make lowbrow laffers with search-friendly titles directly for Netflix, and the checks keep rolling in.
First it was “Naked” — a “Groundhog Day”-style infinite-repeat scenario in which Marlon plays a groom who wakes up au naturel on his wedding day, over and over until he gets it right — and now it’s “Sextuplets,” which is the first thing that pops up when you type “S-e-x” into Netflix. In both cases, lonely viewers looking for something spicy will have to settle for a relatively bland and half-baked comedy,...

(Aotn) There’s something about some of Marlon Wayans’ career choices this decade that could understandably be seen as “frustrating.” The youngest of the Wayans brothers has demonstrated a great knack for physical comedy (the first two entries in the Scary Movie franchise and even the goofy yet riotous White Chicks) and an equally impressive potential as a serious actor (his dramatic turn in Requiem for a Dream), but his latest – the declining Haunted House movies and the abysmal Fifty Shades of Black, which actually managed to make the series it’s spoofing look like Last Tango in Paris by comparison – are a an embarrassing nose dive in comedic standard. Enter Michael Tiddes’ Naked, not the 1993 Cannes winner by Mike Leigh, Netflix’s latest comedic offering and a breath of stale air that actually manages to find a hint of freshness and showcase some of the good qualities of Mr.

It only took a year: here's the spoof take on 50 Shades Of Grey. Chortle.
When Scary Movie came out back in 2000, some remarked that the sleeper hit horror parody was spoofing a satire by drawing inspiration and iconography from Scream, which Wes Craven intended as a trope-riddled satire of the genre. Nevertheless, four sequels and a slew of other parody movies (mostly by 'two of the six writers', Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg) followed and have served to run the art of cinematic parody into the ground over the last 15 years.
Fifty Shades Of Black hasn't been anywhere near as big a hit for co-writer and star Marlon Wayans as Scary Movie was, although it's arguably in a similar situation as that first breakout hit. Many of us (this reviewer included) felt that last year's E.L. James adaptation Fifty Shades Of Grey was already hilarious by accident,...

It astounds me that so many critics can vehemently spit venom at Kevin Smith, proclaiming he only makes movies for himself, yet that same scrutiny seems to avoid a borderline selfish filmmaker like Marlon Wayans. Given the right script and role, Wayans is a funny, talented performer. That I won’t argue. Yet these flavor-of-the-week spoofs he constantly churns out sport the same, unfunny, low-brow sense of humor every single time. These are jokes that make Wayans and his writing buddy Rick Alvarez laugh like pre-pubescent boys – or maybe the jokes were written by pre-pubescent boys, and they just make Wayans and Alvarez laugh. Either way, Fifty Shades Of Black is fifty despicable shades too many. Shocker, right?
