My beloved Chicago Bears are a team in turmoil. After installing a new head coach roughly two seasons ago, the team has simply never gelled since. This being in spite of fielding a team that is built beautifully on paper. Suffice to say as a fan, I’m left crushed and crestfallen.
But whereas die-hard football fans would simply spend the remaining time of the current season hatewatching games and greedily predicting the firing of staff, I myself am choosing a path of less anguish. No denial, anger, bargaining, depression, or really even acceptance. I’m choosing instead the art of distraction. Ok, sure I bet that files under denial, but c’mon: I’m not denying my Bears blew this season in all three phases of the game. Rather than wallow in it, I think it’s a better use of my time to use my somewhat encyclopedic knowledge...

Falling Skies ends season 4 with a decent enough double-bill but is really starting to show its age. Here's Ron's review...
This review contains spoilers.
4.11 Space Oddity & 4.12 Shoot The Moon
Increasingly, there's been a trend among television shows to turn season finales from a single episode into a big event. In some cases, they actually film a two-hour episode and make it a legitimate special event. More commonly, the big finale event is just two episodes shown back to back, perhaps with a little editing to make them flow together a bit better (or to cut out the recap). In the case of Falling Skies, you get two back-to-back episodes to finish off the fourth season and pave the way for the show's final season next summer. The episodes covered a lot of ground, and I debated with myself for entirely too long how to best handle the review. In the end,...

On a cold night in January, George R.R. Martin sits inside the Jean Cocteau Cinema, a revival theater that he owns in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he has lived since 1979. The Cinema had been showing the first three seasons of HBO's megahit series Game of Thrones, which is based on Martin's still-in-the-works saga A Song of Ice and Fire. After viewing the ninth episode, "Baelor," in which the story's apparent hero, Ned Stark, is unexpectedly beheaded, with the screen falling to black, Martin sits quietly for several moments,...

Of all the upcoming superhero movies, "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" has been the not-telling-you-who-this-actor-is-playing-est of them all. Right now, Sarah Gadon, Felicity Jones and Colm Feore are all playing mystery roles. We're also not sure how Goblin-y Chris Cooper and Dane DeHaan will get, and we haven't heard anything else regarding B.J. Novak's quick appearance on-set.
As frustrating as that may be for fans and bloggers alike, director Marc Webb recently revealed to Total Film that that's all part of his masterplan.
"Anything you expect [about who these actors are playing], you'll be surprised," he said. "To be totally honest, I intentionally conceal these things because I want people to be engaged and surprised when they see the film and experience it for the first time. It's not like 'Harry Potter' or 'Twilight' necessarily where you know the stories."
"And we are constructing them from elements of the comics obviously, from the canon,...

With Scott Snyder’s highly anticipated Batman: Zero Year just around the corner and Man of Steel hitting the box-office this month, I felt that it was a perfect time to delve into some of the best re-vamped origin stories in comic books. While many may fall flat (looking at you Marvel: Season Ones) some have overshadowed their golden-age predecessors to become classics that have helped elevated the comic medium to new heights. The following stories are listed in no particular order, but are merely recommendations to help you with your reading needs:
Daredevil: The Man Without Fear
Writer: Frank Miller
Art: John Romita Jr.
Publisher: Marvel Comics
After changing the comic landscape with Batman: Year One, Miller sought to replicate the magic, this time over at Marvel with the character that made him famous: Daredevil. Teaming up with John Romita Jr., Daredevil: The Man Without Fear is...

Lyricist behind some of the greatest pop hits of the 20th century
By contrast with his songwriter partner Burt Bacharach, whose suavely youthful looks belonged in a 1960s Martini ad, the lyricist Hal David, who has died at the age of 91, resembled a president of a suburban Rotary Club: a conservative, suit-and-tie figure from an earlier generation, modest and unassuming in conversation. But it was David's words as much as Bacharach's melodies that captured an audience for such songs as Anyone Who Had a Heart, I Say a Little Prayer, Walk on By, (There's) Always Something There to Remind Me, Alfie, Trains and Boats and Planes, (They Long to Be) Close to You, Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head and Do You Know the Way to San Jose?
Their period of greatest productivity, between 1962 and 1968, coincided with the heyday of their partnership with Dionne Warwick, the gospel-trained singer who gave voice to their finest collaborations.

Jessy Schram has made a stable living on the small screen since starting her career, appearing on Veronica Mars, NBC’s Life, the Crash show, and various guest spots. This past year however, she’s been featured as a villain on TNT’s alien drama Falling Skies and as Cinderella on ABC’s Once Upon A Time. She got to talking about these roles, and more on Small Screen Scoop, including news on what befalls her character on Falling Skies and if we’ll be seeing her in this upcoming season of Ouat. Here it is for ya:
Re: Falling Skies
Small Screen Scoop (Sss): When you signed on to play Karen, did you know she was going to be essentially the villain? Was that made clear? I’ve been curious about that because I found it so surprising.
Jessy Schram (Js): No. No. Not in any way shape or form.

In the last few years, Twitter has become a vital part of the way in which we go about our daily lives. For some people, it’s more important than others, and for some luck souls, it’s even their jobs. For me, I use it to moan, self advertise and follow matters that are important to me. For example, Sickopedia.
Over those years though, there have been some truly outstanding tweets that have shed light on a controversial matter, made you laugh to the high heavens, or even enlightened you beyond your mortal extent.

For the penultimate episode in the series things take a darker turn for our supernatural housemates.
After appearing in the closing minutes of last week’s episode, ghost Eve’s plan has now become apparent. Annie plays a vital role in her scheme but all is not as it seems. Ghost Eve takes Annie of A Christmas carol style tour of the future, and a very grim path awaits mankind.
In ghost Eve’s world, Tom is dead and Hal is one of the most ruthless commanders in the vampire regime. The fate of mankind hangs in the balance, and ghost Eve’s previous attempts to rewrite history have failed. So she asks the unthinkable of Annie, to murder her infant self to prevent the apocalypse.

Previously on Rizzoli & Isles, Dr. Maura Isles told Detective Jane Rizzoli “I love you” over a romantic dinner of grilled cheese and rancid wine. This week, we open with Maura coming out of Jane’s closet. Can I just commend the writers here for their courageous stance on having these two speaking the love that dare not speak its name and coming out as lovers who love ladies? This is really historic. I’m reserving them a space on the police department float in this year’s Boston Gay Pride Parade. Brava, this show. Brava.

With "The Dark Knight Rises," "The Avengers," "The Amazing Spider-Man" and more on the horizon in 2012, it can be easy to forget about the fantastic comic book movies that already passed this year. We have our favorites, of course, but the question is, who was your favorite superhero of 2011? Click past the jump to see our candidates and make your voice heard!

It's never easy bringing a superhero to the big screen, but Cap posed an unusual problem even by comic book movie standards: how do you sell the star-spangled super-soldier to an international audience? Typing that title hurt. A lot. It’s been stated here time and again: I am a Kyle Rayner fan. Here I sit, sarcasm sitting in its glass jar next to me, legitimately about to make the argument that my favorite character in comics be given a dirt nap… and I don’t mean the Steve Rogers–Bruce Wayne dirt nap kiddos. I mean the Gwen Stacy sleep of the pulpy gods. But why, you ask, would I suggest such a fate to the character that inspired this bearded bloke to make comics himself? I paraphrase Dr. Denis Leary:
“Elvis Presley should have been shot in the head back in 1957. Somebody should’ve walked up behind Elvis in ‘57 with a 44 magnum, put the barrel of the gun right up to his brainstem and just pulled the trigger, so you can remember Elvis in a nice way. Wouldn’t it...

Green Lantern is available on Blu-Ray (and Blu-Ray 3D), and for all that many critics didn't cheer for the film, the home release is a pretty nice offering. There are actually a few holes in the list of special features that might have been filled, but what you do get is solid, though the video transfer of the film is surprisingly not the best I've seen.
Complete list of special features and reprint of full film review below.
The Blu-Ray boasts an extended cut, but there isn't much to it. You get some eight or nine minutes of extra material, but it's early stuff, and doesn't exactly put a whole new spin on things.
The best feature by far is the Maximum Movie Mode with Picture in Picture Pods, and you aren't likely to hear me singing the praises of these "modes" very often, unless the norm of such offerings changes quite a bit.

Green Lantern (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)
Directed by: Martin Campbell
Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Tim Robbins
Running Time: 1 hr 45 mins
Rating: PG-13
Due Out: Buy It 10/14 on Blu-ray Combo Pack with UltraViolet Digital Copy
Plot: An alien gives a test pilot (Reynolds) a green ring that gives him otherworldly powers. Suddenly he’s a member of an intergalactic core who attempts to keep peace. Now a new power, based in fear, is threatening Earth and the entire universe.
Who’S It For? Superhero fans. If your lady is charmed by Ryan Reynolds, and it’s hard not to be, then you could convince her to come along for the ride. It’s definitely light like Thor, not heavy like Christopher Nolan’s Batman.
Movie:
Batman has a belt. Spider-man can shoot webs from his wrist. Superman is almost indestructible. So why can’t...

Hey Tyrants!
This is my first article for GeekTyrant and I’m excited to join the team.
Last week kicked off DC Comic’s highly controversial ‘New 52’ aka Post-Flashpoint retcon with the release of Justice League #1. Now like many, I was crying foul over the whole ‘Marvel-izing’ of DC. Do all the women in DC really need to be wearing pants? Why is Barbara Gordon becoming Batgirl again when she had so transcended the character as Oracle? How does it make Superman hip to have his marriage to Lois erased? That last one was giving my ‘One More Day/Brand New Day’ flashbacks. To this day I have not picked up a single Spiderman comic. But anyhow…
I’m always willing to try something once, and some of DC’s updates intrigued me. So here are my thoughts:
Warning: Spoilers below. Read at your own risk!

Well, look at that: Brundlefly is twenty-five years old today. On August 15, 1986, David Cronenberg’s The Fly was released by Twentieth-Century Fox. The film became Cronenberg’s greatest success to date, and quickly established itself as an instant classic of practical effects thanks to the Oscar-winning work of Chris Walas. (Who would go on to direct the sequel.) The Fly also gave stars Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis, who had met and begun dating while making Transylvania 6-5000, their first true breakout lead opportunities. Those are all significant results of the film’s release, but The Fly is a film worth revisiting and honoring for other reasons. It marks a real turning point in the career of David Cronenberg, and stands as one of the unassailable arguments for the idea of the film remake. And, in the cinematic culture of 2011, where the superhero is ascendant, some of you might join...

Talented voice actor Josh Keaton took take time out of his schedule to sit down and answer a few questions about the new animated take on Green Lantern that is scheduled to come out later this year, including how he got the part, what he did to prepare, and what to expect from Hal's relationship with Kilowag. More famous for lending his voice to Spider-Man he was kind enough to talk a little about voicing the Web Slinger in the upcoming Edge of Time video game and gives us his thoughts on Andrew Garfield as the new live Action Spider-Man in next Summers The Amazing Spider-Man. How did you get the role of Hal Jordan/Green Lantern? Basically it was like any other role, it came to me as an audition from my manager and I read for it. It was actually a little bit different from a lot...

As the movie industry is forcing us all to realize more and more, translating comic books to film is a tricky beast. It didn't quite seem like such a chore in 1978 when Superman hit theaters, but it now seems pretty obvious that this was because, let's face it, Superman is easy. Everyone knows Superman.
We didn't make too much of a jump with Batman either. Even among those least interested in knowing anything remotely related to comics could tell you the general backstory, and the overall lay of the land of any film we were likely to see. It's more or less the same deal with Spider-Man.
Putting together a film on any of these three is to start with half your work done for you. But, over the last decade, comics have swarmed to theaters, and most of these have a much different game to play. Whether it's Iron Man,...

Being in the Green Lantern Corps. is a lot like being a U.S. Marshal. You are allocated a certain degree of autonomy and discretion. Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds), however, does not have any of these advantages. A local who happened upon an alien with a dying wish, he finds himself introduced to a world vastly different from his own. As he is the first human Green Lantern, he has to be mentored by a seven foot tall bird named Tomar-Re (Geoffrey Rush is on a roll isn’t he?), he can’t figure out his ring’s oath, and his trainer, Sinestro (Mark Strong) is an ass.
Reynolds was a great choice for Hal. He exudes a natural charisma that invites you to share Hal’s unbridled optimism and it doesn’t feel false. Green Lantern is much closer to Superman than Batman or Spider-Man. Hal has his own...

Hal Jordan's "Green Lantern" predecessor Abin Sur is everywhere these days. He started his tour de force at San Diego Comic-Con, popped up again in the comics recently (in "Green Lantern" #64), and he makes regular appearances in many of the "Green Lantern" trailers — and now he's at the MTV Movie Awards, too!
In case you haven't been glued to MTV for our Movie Awards pre-show, you just missed yet another Abin Sur sighting on our very own red carpet, plus the actual Green Lantern used to power up Hal's ring (as well as Captain America's shield and a Hydra motorcycle).
Similarly to how he was displayed at Sdcc, the fallen Green Lantern Corps member (played by "Star Wars: Attack of the Clones" alum Temuera Morrison) is lying in the coffin-like escape pod that brought him to Earth.
And if Abin Sur's slightly eerie Movie Awards presence isn't enough...

There’s something just fun — and often funny — about monsters in movies. And when they fight!? Now that’s entertainment!
Japan has the right idea pitting Godzilla against Mothra and Gamera and … well, the list goes on. Even comic books pit their best bad guys — and good guys — against each other for superfights.
We say, bring on more! The editors at Disc Dish have come up with 10 movie monster fights we would we like to see and who we think will win. Tell us if you agree. What movie monster fights would you like to see?
1. The Mountain Banshees (Ikran in the Na’vi) from Avatar vs. The Harpies from Jason and the Argonauts
The Fight: Though both are winged flying creatures with matching color schemes (lots of blues and violets), Jason’s Harpies look like they’re the weaker of the two as they only have two wings while Avatar’s Ikran have four.

Film icon Elizabeth Taylor's death hit Twitter hard this morning, and "Cleopatra" fans in the comics world paid their respects in posts. Rags Morales and Greg Pak took to their accounts to share memories, while Alex Irvine brought up the "Asterix" volume she inspired and Paul Southworth worried about what's going on with Bubbles.
In other topics, Bryan Lee O'Malley appeared to have an epiphany about Craig Thompson's upcoming graphic novel "Habibi." Someone else expressed a much less coherent opinion about protests going on around the world recently, and Gail Simone made quite a pitch for a new DC series.

The Annie Awards, Animation's Highest Honor, went all the way for DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon!" The fun, animated film, originally received 15 nominations and won 10 trophies including Best Animated Feature.
Given by the International Animated Film Society, the 38th annual Annie Awards was not without controversy. Apparently, Disney and Pixar announced they would no longer participate in the annual awards because of their concerns over how the event is judged.
The studios claimed the Annie Awards have always been slighted towards DreamWorks Animation. And this year, both DreamWorks film ("How to Train Your Dragon") and TV ("Kung Fu Panda Holiday") topped the Annie Awards.
"Dragon," featuring the voices of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, America Ferrara, Jonah Hill, and Craig Ferguson, beat Annie contenders such as Universal's "Despicable Me," Disney's "Tangled," Sony Pictures Classics' "The Illusionist," and Pixar's "Toy Story 3" for best animated feature. Summary: An obsessed cop is on the trail of a serial killer prowling the streets of Buffalo, New York. When his teenage daughter disappears, he drops any pretension and professional restraint he might have to get the killer.
Analysis: Shot almost three years ago now, Dark Castle had originally planned to release this thriller back in late 2009. However for reasons unspecified, it has been sitting on a shelf for some time and keeps getting delayed. In cases like these, the most obvious reason is usually the correct one - it stinks (eg. "Case 39"). The company certainly has had its fair share of box-office duds lately including "Whiteout," "Ninja Assassin," "The Losers," "Orphan" and "Splice".
Yet Cusack generally has good taste in projects, his last venture into horror was the surprisingly effective Stephen King...
Opens: 2011
Cast: John Cusack, Jennifer Carpenter, Ksenia Solo, Mae Whitman, Sonya Walger
Director: Morgan O'Neill

DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon" flew high above competition by nabbing 15 nominations for the 38th annual Annie Awards given by the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood. ("How to Train Your Dragon" movie review)
"Dragon," featuring the voices of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, America Ferrara, Jonah Hill, and Craig Ferguson, will duke it out with Universal's "Despicable Me," Disney's "Tangled," Sony Pictures Classics' "The Illusionist," and Pixar's "Toy Story 3" for best animated feature. ("How to Train Your Dragon" interviews)
But there's controversy in the Annie Awards world. The Hollywood Reporter is saying that "Disney and Pixar announced they would no longer participate in the annual awards because of their concerns over how the event is judged."
Apparently, Disney was complaining that the Annie Awards has favored DreamWorks in recent years such as when "Kung Fu Panda" won 10 trophies and beat Pixar's "Wall-e" in 2008.

We on the MTV Splash Page crew weren't alone refreshing our browsers last night when the "Green Lantern" trailer appeared for the world to see. The launch created a tidal wave of reactions all over the place, but the creators in the Twitter Report feed were as vocal as anyone.
Thus far, the movie has the approval of Kevin Smith, Neil Kleid and Rob Liefeld. Geoff Johns hopes you caught a specific Easter egg that was thrown in, and Paul Azaceta and Brian Denham have some reservations. Check out who shares your opinions below, and if you don't have any yet, it's probably high time that you viewed the new clips from Martin Campbell's film for yourself.
I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is the Twitter Report for November 17, 2010.

Green Lantern
Comic Book Movie has posted a rumoured description of the teaser trailer set to debut next week with "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One".
Amongst the highlights are Abin Sur crashing, a shot with Hal Jordan instantly changing into costume in front of his mate, Hal making a huge fist construct to right hook a bunch of bad guys, brief shots of Oa and Hector Hammond, and Hal going into hyperspace.
Thor
Much like the two "Iron Man" films in year's past, Marvel's "Thor" is scheduled to open a week earlier throughout the globe than in the Us. According to the official site and with the exception of Japan (which gets it July 2nd), all major international territories like the UK, Australia, France and New Zealand are all set to get "Thor" in cinemas on April 28th or 29th, a full week ahead of the May 6th release in North America.

The cast and crew on bringing the Corps to life
Shortly after unveiling footage from Green Lantern to an eager Comic-Con crowd, cast and crew gathered for a followup press conference.
Director Martin Campbell joined Producer Donald De Line and actors Ryan Reynolds (Hal Jordan), Blake Lively (Carol Ferris), Mark Strong (Sinestro) and Peter Sarsgaard (Hector Hammond) to field questions about the big-screen origin story that sees test-pilot Hal Jordan chosen to carry the power of the Green Lanterns, an elite Corps of intergalactic police, sworn to protect the universe with special rings that have the power to physically manifest willpower.
Q: Is Green Lantern a hard sell for audiences simply because there's so much going on?
Martin Campbell: It’s not a tough one to explain. I think it’s all very, very clear. I think the story that we are telling, which is the Hal Jordon story,...

This week we got our first look at Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern, and I loved what I saw! There seems to be some mixed feelings about the new Green Lantern look from around the web. I wasn't sure what to expect from the full on CGI costume, but I'm very pleased with the outcome, and the costume design looks awesome! It's definitely an evolution of what we've all come to know from the comic books. Entertainment Weekly also had an in depth discussion with director Martin Campbell and the actors of the film which includes Reynolds, Peter Sarsgaard and Blake Lively, as well as the films producer Donald De Line The talent discusses the film, the challenges, the shelved comedic Jack Black approach, adult diapers and more.
Here is a full transcript of the article from Entertainment Weekly, it's definitely a fun and entertaining read with of some great...

Josh Hutcherson was long mentioned as a front-runner for the lead role of Peter Parker in Sony's "Spider-Man" reboot -- some even pegged him as a virtual lock for the part -- but as we're all no doubt aware by now, Hutcherson won't be spinning webs for Sony. That's a distinction belonging to Andrew Garfield.
But just because the "Spider-Man" ship has sailed for Hutcherson doesn't mean that the "Journey to the Center of the Earth" actor should close the door on the comic book community.
Here are a few other roles we could see Hutcherson taking on!
Wally West
Although "The Flash" is said to focus on the Barry Allen version of the scarlet speedster, who's to say that the younger Wally West won't have a role? Hutcherson could easily play the free-spirited West, starting off as the Kid Flash before ultimately taking over the franchise from Allen several movies down the line.
