Experience the new Pearl Jam album in a unique cinematic way. The rock band has revealed a short promo trailer for Pearl Jam: Dark Matter, a one-night-only cinematic event this April. Viewers will be among the very first to hear the band's new record (called "Dark Matter") in cinemas around the world. This communal experience will play Dark Matter in its entirety twice: first in a dark cinema, then again with mesmerizing visuals. Artist Alexandr Gnezdilov created the cover of Dark Matter using a large self-made kaleidoscope with each letter visible on the cover individually captured, then handwritten midair with a specially designed flashlight to create the pearlescent effect. This is the same art seen in the visualization within this trailer. Produced by multi-Grammy award winning producer Andrew Watt,...

Mike McCready has provided an update on what’s next from Pearl Jam, assuring fans that their forthcoming album — produced by Andrew Watt — will be “a lot heavier than you’d expect.”
The guitarist offered some details about the album in a recent interview with Classic Rock, and although it’s yet to be announced, it sounds like the LP is just about complete: “I’m hoping it’s gonna come out [in 2024],” McCready said. “We have a bunch of songs tracked. We worked with Andrew Watt, who’s a younger pop producer-type guy, but he’s really a rock guy at heart — I think we’re his favorite band. When we were in the studio with him this past year, he really kicked our asses, got us focused and playing, song after song.”

Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready has revealed he is drawing on his experiences in the Seattle grunge scene for a new rock opera. In an interview with Guitar World, the musician said the project is inspired by and honors the late Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell, who was also McCready’s bandmate in the supergroup Temple of the Dog.
“I look at him as one of the greatest singers and songwriters of all time, aside from being a friend,” McCready said about Cornell. “I love Chris and I’m working on a little project about the Seattle scene and a musical kind of rock opera thing. It’s just from my experience in the Seattle music scene, and he’s part of it.”
Last month, McCready shared the first preview of the rock opera when he posted a live performance of a Cornell tribute called “Crying Moon” on Instagram. He told...

Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament has offered his own update on the next Pearl Jam album. During an appearance on Kyle Meredith With…, Ament said that while the band feels they’ve “earned the right to do whatever the fuck we want,” their latest effort isn’t quite done and “doesn’t feel like a record yet.”
The comments come just two weeks after Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard shared with Meredith that he felt the new album was “close to the finish line,” an assessment with which Ament gently disagrees. “The hardest part of [finishing] a record a lot of times is figuring out which songs go on the record and do we need to record another song and what’s the artwork and what’s the title and all that stuff,” Ament says, noting the band is planning on taking the rest of summer off with those questions left unanswered.

When Jeff Ament started the process of scoring “Under the Banner of Heaven,” he actually received quite a bit of input from series creator Dustin Lance Black about how he wanted to communicate a constant sense of dread. “He wanted to have that shimmer of the celestial, but he wanted that to be juxtaposed with really dense earthly evil,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). In order to achieve the desired sound, Ament (along with co-composers Josh Klinghoffer and John Wicks) started messing around with what instruments to use to exaggerate those scenes. “We got a lot of the earthly stuff through the loops that we were playing and running keyboards through lots of effects, pedals and sub-harmonizers, low kind of guttural sounds.”

“Under the Banner of Heaven,” the grim, century-hopping true crime series of Mormon fundamentalists committing a savage double murder in the name of God, rests its weary soul on June 2. But the music lives on for fans of Pearl Jam, whose bassist and co-founder Jeff Ament was called upon to score the FX series.
In collaboration with screenwriter Dustin Lance Black — the writer of “Milk,” for which he won an Academy Award for original screenplay — the first-time composer was tasked with recording an equally-atmospheric version of vengeance and misery to soundtrack devout detective Jeb Pyre (Andrew Garfield) and his battle against good and evil, inside and outside the realm of his faith.
Ament enlisted the band’s current second guitarist, Josh Klinghoffer, as well as instrumentalists John Wicks and Josh Evans, to create an oppressive and noisy score while the series was still in production. (“Under the Banner of Heaven...

Last Friday marked the 30th anniversary of Pearl Jam’s Ten, causing many Generation X–ers to reflect on their lives and lament the cruel passage of time. Less remarked upon was the fact that that day was also the 25th anniversary of No Code. The 1996 LP was the band’s first release of the post-grunge era and it generated a fraction of the attention of Pearl Jam’s first three albums, but many hardcore fans consider it one of their best works.

Like many of us, had Beabadoobee known about the Covid-19 pandemic, she would have spent her last “normal” day wisely. She contemplates this on her new single “Last Day on Earth,” off her new EP Our Extended Play.
Co-written and co-produced by the 1975’s Matty Healy and George Daniel, the track is steeped in Nineties nostalgia — from crunchy guitar riffs to a Jeff Ament-styled hat and a Kurt Cobain poster on the wall. Bea Kristi daydreams about her final pre-pandemic day, getting stoned and flying paper kites with friends.

Maybe we should start with that subtitle: “America’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll Magazine.” [Clears throat at the volume of a jet engine] Scott Crawford’s documentary on the estimable, invaluable 1970’s music rag does stoop to mention another U.S. publication that was covering rock stars and the counterculture scene, one which kicked off the year before Detroit record-store owner Barry Kramer decided to begun publishing his own take. Creem‘s existence, in fact, was partially a reactive fuck you to the very entity you’re reading right now, as one of the film’s talking heads admits — even the name,...

Pearl Jam performed their Gigaton track “Dance of the Clairvoyants” live for the first time during the All in Wa Covid-19 relief concert Wednesday.
The socially distanced performance not only found each member of Pearl Jam recording from home, but there was a little bit of lineup movement as well, with guitarist Stone Gossard playing bass on the track and bassist Jeff Ament playing guitar and keyboards. Drummer Matt Cameron and guitarist Mike McCready held down their usual posts, as did Eddie Vedder, who also busted out the lights, the...

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Pearl Jam’s 2020 tour in support of its new album “Gigaton” was postponed before it began. But the Seattle band gave fans a first taste of what a live performance from “Gigaton” will sound like when it performed a socially distanced version of “Dance of the Clairvoyants” Wednesday night as part of the “All In Wa: A Concert for Covid-19 Relief” livestream event.
“All In Wa” also featured performances from Dave Matthews, Brandi Carlile, Macklemore, Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard, Ciara, Sir Mix-a-Lot and Allen Stone. It aired on Washington stations Krem, King 5, Kong and Kskn, as well as on Amazon Prime.
In the video, which is available now on Pearl Jam’s YouTube channel, each member of the band performs his role in isolation, with Eddie Vedder swirling around a room adorned with psychedelic lights and other odd props, bassist Jeff Ament...

When Keith Ross was a 10-year-old growing up in New Jersey, Black Sabbath came to town. Since he was too young to attend, he drew the concert as he imagined it.
The drawing, along with others, inspired Ross to create @TinyConcert, an Instagram account that features short videos of bands drawn with a ballpoint pen — “Just as I would have when I was a kid,” he tells Rolling Stone. “I keep all my mistakes. It’s the smudges and stray lines that give these characters their charm.”

Long ago, during a brief “ecstasy phase,” Eddie Vedder tried to write some techno music. “I was listening to all this stuff on ecstasy,” he told me in 2006, during an all-night chat in a Cleveland hotel room. “But I was wondering, ‘Are they writing it on ecstasy?’ I decided that the pure way to do it is to actually take ecstasy, and then write ecstasy music. That didn’t work out. But I enjoyed the ecstasy.” Around the same time, guitarist Stone Gossard revealed a desire to experiment with Pearl...

The quintet announced the project in mid-January following an online scavenger hunt built around Paul Nicklen’s vivid cover photo, “Ice Waterfall,” which shows meltwater surging from the Nordaustlandet ice cap.

So, How Was Your Decade is a series in which the decade’s most innovative musicians answer our questionnaire about the music, culture and memorable moments that shaped their decade. We’ll be rolling these pieces out throughout December.
Pearl Jam may have only released one album this decade, 2013’s Lightning Bolt, but they were hardly inactive. They celebrated their 20th anniversary in 2011 with the Cameron Crowe-directed documentary Pearl Jam 20, toured the world to celebrate their anniversary, entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in their first year...

“Fucking around, I’m falling in love,” a distant, muffled Angel Olsen utters at the beginning of “True Blue,” the unexpected highlight from Mark Ronson’s sparkling new record Late Night Feelings. The track has been ringing in minds since its release last week—its disco sludge smearing over summer windows like a psychedelic car wash.

When Rolling Stone compiled our list of the 50 Greatest Grunge Albums, the Mvp was clearly Soundgarden. Five of the band’s records made the cut — everything they released from their debut, Screaming Life, through 1994’s Superunknown — and two of those LPs placed in the top 10. Their 1991 album, Badmotorfinger, came in at number two, following only Nirvana’s Nevermind.
The group formed in 1984, playing psychedelic punk on early songs like “Hunted Down” and “All Your Lies,” tracks that showed off Chris Cornell’s jaw-dropping vocal ability. Eventually they introduced genre hallmarks like off-kilter time signatures,...
