The first iteration of the Cannes Film Festival, planned for 1939, was scuppered when Germany invaded Poland to trigger the start of World War II. But when the festival finally got off the ground in 1946, Indian cinema came out swinging. Mounted shortly after the conclusion of the war, the first “real” Cannes Film Festival featured competition entries from Billy Wilder (The Lost Weekend), Roberto Rossellini (Open City), and David Lean (Brief Encounter). In the spirit of post-war peace and reconciliation, the competition jury, headed by French historian Georges Huisman, handed the top prize — then the Grand Prix — to films from 11 of the 18 countries represented that year.
This included India, with Chetan Anand’s social-realist drama Neecha Nagar, and, for a decade at least, the country was a regular fixture in Competition. After Anand came V. Shantaram with Amar Bhoopali (1952), then Raj Kapoor with Awaara (1953), and Bimal Roy with Do Bigha Zamin...

New Delhi, May 1 (Ians) More than three decades before Aamir Khan’s train stunt in “Ghulam” (1998), this actor, renowned for his natural performances, had already done such a hazardous exploit, not just a daredevil challenge on the screen, but to inject reality into the scene and save the filmmaker the “bother of back projection”.
Balraj Sahni also involved Meena Kumari in his risky ruse in “Pinjre ke Panchhi” (1966), which — in another strange resemblance with Aamir’s film — was shot at Khandala. The scene had her walking on the rail tracks in a bid to commit suicide, even as he ran after her and managed to pull her aside from the rushing train at the last minute.
The filmmaker only wanted shots of him running after her and pulling her away; those of the were to be juxtapositioned. Sahni, however, knew that a train would pass the spot soon, and if they moved fast,...

I noticed something curious. Director Siddharth Anand of the film ‘Fighter’ says that his film flopped because 90% of Indian moviegoers have never sat in an airplane! I was amazed, amused, but, most of all, I was worried. Worried, because this is how the maker of a Rs 400-crore film thinks!
My mind instantly went back to Shakti Samanta’s ‘An Evening In Paris’ (1967), where a bikini-clad Sharmila Tagore is sea skiing as Shammi Kapoor courts her hanging from a helicopter. After learning what Malhotra had said to explain why his film had failed, I wondered how many people hang from a helicopter to court a woman! I don’t know anybody who has done such a thing and still, ‘An Evening In Paris’ was a major hit! I can cite hundreds of such examples.
Of course, the audience must first identify with the subject of a film. The other factor...

Fighter Box Office To Avenge Every Single Indian Air Force Disaster Film In Bollywood ( Photo Credit – Viacom18 Studios / YouTube )
Hrithik Roshan plays an Indian Air Force Officer in the upcoming film Fighter. Helmed by Siddharth Anand, the film is all set to release on January 25, 2024. The film is about a group of Iaf fighters who come together for a mission against Pakistan. It also stars Deepika Padukone, Karan Singh Grover, Akshay Oberoi, and Sanjeeda Shaikh as Indian Air Force officers.
After watching the cast look terrific in uniforms, we thought we would research a bit about men and women in uniform on-screen. To our surprise, while there are plenty of films made on the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, and Navy remain much unexplored on-screen.

There was one occasion when Dev Anand, forced to quit a blue-collar job he depended on for sustenance, ripped his elder brother Chetan Anand of Rs (the then) princely sum of Rs 5,000 to launch a less than moral venture, and if this was not enough, began wooing the girl his younger brother Vijay ‘Goldie’ Anand fancied, and eventually in luring her away.
If these sordid revelations shock you, do not think too badly of Dev Anand. For all this did not happen in real life, but in reel life, in the social romantic comedy “Kala Bazaar” (1960), which has several distinctions to its credit but chiefly stands out for being the only film in which all the three Anand brothers acted together.
While Chetan Anand had directed the early Dev Anand films, he had sought to branch out on his own after “Taxi Driver” (1954) to indulge in his own creativity, and...

One evening in Bombay in 1954, almost all the taxis in the city seemed parked outside a prominent cinema on a busy thoroughfare with their drivers, led by the chairman of their association, inside, watching a film, and according to its hero, a unit member “gleefully announced that there was no taxi available for any passengers that evening.”
The film was ‘Taxi Driver’, a lightly noirish urban romance featuring Dev Anand, Kalpana Kartika, and Sheila Ramani, and especially bittersweet for its hero both professionally and personally, beyond its commercial success. It was not the sole film to feature taxi drivers that year, with Dev Anand’s friend Guru Dutt also releasing his own ‘Aar Paar’, having a similar focus and largely the same storyline, but neither film overshadowed the other.

Three-fourth of his 88-year-long life was spent in acting and of these, six and a half decades, over half, had Dev Anand playing the lead (romantic) role, even as his peers and even several of his leading ladies had moved on or out. In the process, Dev Anand ended up being paired against at least three generations of heroines, if not four, as he transitioned from his early days where his female co-lead was the bigger star to a time when most actresses were keen on working with him as he sauntered from success to success with that charming demeanour and the winning smile.

If India ever had a star, it was Dev Anand. He was the mould in which subsequent generations of stars were cast. Dev Anand was born Dharamdev on September 26, 1923, in the Shakargarh tehsil of Gurdaspur district of Punjab. His father Pishori Lal Anand was a successful advocate and a follower of Mahatma Gandhi. Both brothers got involved in the progressive Indian People’s Theatre Association (Ipta). Chetan made ‘Neecha Nagar’ in 1946 and went on to win the Grand Prix at the inaugural Cannes film festival.

Celebrated director Pradeep Sarkar, who passed away here after a prolonged illness in the early hours of Friday, was working on his “dream project” at the time of his death. Titled ‘Priya Interrupted’, it was to be the biopic of Priya Rajvansh, Hindi film actress and partner for over two decades of ‘Neecha Nagar’ maker Chetan Anand, who was awarded the Grand Prix (now Golden Palm) at the first-ever Cannes Film Festival in 1946. He then went on to co-found Navketan Film with younger brother Dev Anand in 1949.
Rajvansh’s murder on March 27, 2000, had sent shockwaves across Mumbai.
The sons of Chetan Anand – Ketan and Vivek – were convicted for committing the murder and imprisoned to life imprisonment. They were released on bail after serving their sentence for two years.

Parallel cinema cuts loose from the musicality of Bollywood and the common perception of Indian cinema at large. Coming out of West Bengal in the 1950s, parallel cinema appeared as an alternative to the glamour and dance; socially conscious and experimental in style and mood, it maps the origins of art cinema in India, and for the first time, the rest of the world was looking at India as an innovator of film language (Satyajit Ray’s 1955 train sequence Pather Panchali is one of the most celebrated in film history). In this movement, which followed in the wake of Italian neorealism, life's diegetics became the soundtrack, real life movement over set up musical numbers. This mix traces some choice moments in Parallel Cinema’s sound. Many songs and soundtracks from this period have a lofi quality to them—due in part to the quality of audio recording equipment throughout the years of the movement,...

A good old review of the masterpiece which once defined a much neglected segment of Indian as well as world cinema. Am I really going to rant about the state of the art cinematography or the captivating screenplay of a masterpiece that is already beyond any kind of criticism?. No, I won’t. On the contrary, let me guide you through a rather overlooked aspect of Ray’s filmmaking, The Music; in this particular case the musical score of ‘Sonar Kella’.

In one of this significant war film’s highpoints, Major Vihaan Singh Shergill, played by the self-effacing Vicky Kaushal, gathers his troop together somewhere in Kashmir before striking surgically in the country next door.
These are soldiers who have lost loved ones in terror attacks, and their blood boils.
Uri brings the blood of cross-border tension to a boil but avoids a spillover. There is a rush of patriotic pride in the product—and why should there not be?—but it is reined-in, curbed and never allowed to spill over in a gush of irrepressible jingoism. “Miss Lovely” was the independent film from India that competed in the Un Certain Regard section of Cannes Film Festival in 2012. 2013 was one of the best years of the Indian history of independent cinemas.Even though the Indian independent cinema collective has made its presence felt in the beginning of 2000 itself, they were made to stay away with bowed heads out of an imposed inferiority of untouchability. However , the decisions of the national film award juries of 2013 brought them to the front rows. That year, Anand Gandhi’s “Ship of Theseus” was selected as the best film and Ashim Ahluwalia’s “Miss Lovely” got the special jury award for best film. These two films respectively got the award for the best female actor in a supporting role and best production design also.
Other than the year 2015 , all years that followed also were that of the success stories of the independent cinemas.

Pihu
Starring Myra, Prerna Sharma, voices of Rahul Bagga and Hrishita Bhatt
Directed by Vinod Kapri
If Macaulay Culkin was a little girl who was a far better actor than he, and if Home Alone was a tragic terrifying nervewracking exposition on a 2-year child left all alone in a house filled with electric gadgets and dangerous inclines and a dead parent , this is the film you would get.
Let’s be thankful for the new wave in Hindi cinema that has gripped the Bollywood script in 2018 like an obstinate fever. Pihu pushes the envelope so far you can’t see the stamp of any other film on it. On seeing the trailer I had compared Pihu to Chetan Anand’s Aakhri Khat. And to a large extent that parallel remains pertinent.
To simply watch a child fending for herself is the most hearbreaking ode to vulnerability on this side of Sadma.

When the Cannes Film Festival unveiled its 2017 Official Selection, the lack of a single title by an Indian director marked the second year running that the biggest film industry in the world has been unrepresented in the main lineup (the last Indian movie in the Official Selection was Neeraj Ghaywan’s “Masaan” in 2015’s Un Certain Regard section).
Indian cinema has never been a complete non-entity at Cannes; ever since Chetan Anand won top honors with “Neecha Nagar” at the inaugural festival in 1946, Indian filmmakers have enjoyed some degree of exposure at Cannes, in or out of competition. In the last decade alone, screenings have included features and shorts from close to 30 Indian filmmakers, including Vikramaditya Motwani, who wowed audiences with “Udaan”; Ritesh Batra with his Grand Golden Rail-winning “The Lunchbox”; and Anurag Kashyap, whose “Ugly,” “Gangs of Wasseypur” and “Raman Raghav 2.0” all opened to applause at various Directors’ Fortnights.

A bigger mystery than the sinking of the submarine during the 1971 Indo-Pak war that this film so bravely recreates, is Rana Daggubati’s one single immovable expression that he has been holding steadfast on his impressive face ever since he graced the large screen with his imposing physical presence.
It’s an expression of scowling machismo, a ratification of masculinity and a rejection of all humbug, and that includes changing the expression according to the emotional need of the moment.
Rana plays Lieutenant Commander Arjun Varma. And if you think this is as a filmy as a hero’s name can get, wait till you see the torrent of patriotic jingoism that hits you straight in the face(though alas, not in the guts). The national anthem (which had already played before the film begins, as...

It wasn't meant to be out. At least not yet. Chinese actress Zhu Zhu prematurely announced on a social network her presence in Kabir Khan's new film Tubelight which is currently being shot in Ladakh. Salman Khan Productions who are the co-producers of Tubelight were horrified by the Chinese actress' over-enthusiasm. The picture was hastily taken off the internet. However by then the information that she was Salman's love interest in Tubelight had already gone viral. Much to the annoyance of Salman and his team. Says a source close to the project, "They wanted to introduce her properly after the current shooting in Ladakh which goes on for another fortnight. Zhu Zhu was immediately asked to remove her picture with Salman in Ladakh which she had so happily and innocently posted. In her defence, she didn't mean to jump protocol because she didn't know what the protocol was." Incidentally...

We first experienced the magic of Siddharth and Garima’s writing in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela. The duo, along with Mr. Bhansali, brilliantly transformed the story of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet into an Indian context and the result was rave reviews for the writing and the stars.
For their next project they entered the world of a love story of a warrior – Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s epic Bajirao Mastani starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra. For what is being called his magnus opus, Mr Bhansali went to Siddharth and Garima to paint beautiful pictures with their lyrics for three of the biggest songs, ‘Deewani Mastani’, ‘Pinga’ and ‘Mohe Rang Do Laal’.
I was granted the amazing privilege to interview Siddharth and Garima about RamLeela and it was a joy to write the piece. This week, I once again was honored with the...

On May 26, when the 66th Cannes film festival draws to an end, India will anxiously wait to see if either Monsoon Shootout or Dabba will bring home a Camera d’Or, the award given to the best debut film in the festival. Many people from all around the world have paid tribute to Pandit Ravi Shankar, who sadly died on Tuesday at the age of 92. Pt. Ravi Shankar contributed significantly towards the popularity of classical Indian music on a global scale and has even inspired Western musicians such as The Beatles. George Harrison, who collaborated with Pt. Ravi Shankar many times, once described him as “the godfather of world music.” He was an expert at playing the sitar and the combination of this with other Indian instruments such as the tabla gave his music the flavour that it needed. Here are just some of the tributes which the Indian Prime Minister and the Bollywood fraternity have written about Pandit Ravi Shankar on social networking sites and the inimitable legacy which he has left behind.

The ethereal Waheeda Rehman missed the opportunity to meet her co-star Dev Anand one last time, but fondly remembers him as a good producer. She, however, feels in recent times he got too involved with himself..Without meaning any disrespect to him, I.d like to say that as the years went by Dev.s script sense went more and more haywire. I think he got too involved with himself. Dev was a very good producer. But he needed to look out for better scripts,. said Waheeda. When told her that she was Dev Anand.s favourite actress, she laughed and said: .That was nice of him. We did share a very easy and warm working relationship. When he turned director with .Prem Pujari., I was in the film, of course..She almost didn.t do her most iconic film .Guide., but thanks to Dev Anand.s persuasiveness, she became...
