“Where were you in ’76?” The newest entrant in Criterion’s 4K disc club is Richard Linklater’s rowdy but affectionate ode to high school nostalgia, Texas-style. It’s a Bicentennial summer update of American Graffiti and in just 14 years the entire face of America has changed. Youth idealism is dead and the main rule is to avoid plans made by parents. Linklater’s graduation night sticks with kids free to roam on their own and have a wild time. He has a terrific way with performances that include a string of memorable faces that became much better-known, plus a couple of future stars.

Richard Linklater writes in a short essay published on The Guardian that he’s still experiencing Ptsd from filming “Dazed and Confused.” The director’s coming-of-age movie is considered one of the defining American independent films of the 1990s, and it made stars out of young actors like Matthew McConaughey and Parker Posey. While the film has become a stoner classic that many young viewers idolize, Linklater writes that was not his original intention.
“I thought the 1970s sucked,” Linklater writes. “‘Dazed’ was supposed to be an anti-nostalgic movie. But it’s like trying to make an anti-war movie — just by depicting it, you make it look fun. I wanted to do a realistic teen movie — most of them had too much drama and plot but teenage life is more like you’re looking for the party, looking for something cool, the endless pursuit of something you never find, and even if you do,...

A certain generation regards this 1993 comedy-drama from Richard “Boyhood” Linklater as their The Breakfast Club. Except its period setting makes it a recollection rather than a snapshot, so it has more in common with George Lucas’s American Graffiti. Dazed & Confused similarly cautions against nostalgia, reminding us that, whatever the decade, youth is a challenging and awkward time; joyous for some and cruel for others.
In typical Linklater style, the action takes place within a tight timeframe: the last day of school in the year 1976. (“School’s out for summer!” cries Alice Cooper – one of many on-the-nose music cues throughout the film.) Unleashed, an array of students and ex-students run rampant around town, bickering and bantering, picking on the younger kids, while looking forward to what feels like the last party of their childhood.

It’s the re-imagining of the last days of Jim Morrison.
The upcoming “The Last Beat” is described as an erotic, lyrical and music-filled portrait of a fictionalized character that was inspired by Jim Morrison’s last days in Paris. It follows an American rock star Jay Douglas with poetic ambitions and living in Paris who becomes involved in a love triangle.
The indie film stars Shawn Andrews (“Dazed and Confused”), Cameron Richardson (“Shameless”), Martha Higareda (“Street Kings”), Kevin Corrigan (“The Departed”), and Seymour Cassell (“Rushmore”). It is directed by Robert Saitzyk.
Latino-Review received an exclusive four-minute extended opening scene for “The Last Beat.”

Yes, okay, we get it, technically the 20th anniversary of the theatrical release of Richard Linklater's seminal high school stoner opus "Dazed and Confused" was a few weeks ago. But who says the party has to stop?
Not us.
After all, the New York Film Festival is hosting a special screening tonight, boasting his Linklaterness himself, along with some of the flick's original cast members. If the Film Society of Lincoln Center says it's not over, it ain't over. After all, one of the things we love about 1993's "Dazed and Confused" is that we get older, but it stays the same age. Read on for 20 things you may or may not know about "Dazed and Confused."
1. The character of Wooderson was based on Matthew McConaughey's older brother.
"The first thing you ever told me," Linklater said to McConaughey onstage at a SXSW reunion, "was, 'I'm not this guy.

Remember Kevin Pickford? In Dazed and Confused, he was the stoner dude itching to have an end-of-the-year blowout. He ordered some kegs and got stoned with his buds, but the parental units didn't hit the road for their vacation early enough, and Pickford's party dreams were dashed quickly and savagely. That being said, he did have the arms of girlfriend Michelle (Milla Jovovich) to fall into, so it's hard to really pity him ... especially when he, as in Shawn Andrews, got to marry her in real life. (She was just 16 back then, so the marriage was annulled pretty quickly.)

Much like "I'm Not There", the project is described as a "nontraditional biopic" that tracks the final days of Jay Douglas, a famous American rock star in the early '70s as he navigates his relationships with two women in Paris.
Shawn Andrews is attached to star in the project which Saitzyk penned. Shooting kicks off in Paris this October.

To say the least, Jim Morrison was an interesting person. His lyrics, as nonsensical as they could be at times, reached out to a legion of fans and his on-stage behavior became that of rock and roll legend. The lead singer of The Doors has already been the subject of both a 1991 film, The Doors, and most recently a documentary, When You're Strange, which premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival. But just like any major personality, it's hard to keep him contained. THR is reporting that writer-director Robert Saitzyk has finished a script based on the final days of Morrison's life, and will direct it for Zero Gravity Management. Titled The Last Beat, the film is being described as a fictional account, much like Gus Van Sant's Last Days was about Kurt Cobain. Lesser known actor Shawn Andrews, who has worked with the director previously, will play the...

It's twenty years since Oliver Stone's The Doors played fast and loose with the facts surrounding Jim Morrison's life and death. Since then Tom De Cillo's excellent documentary When You're Strange has put the record reasonably straight, but we're heading back to "print the legend" territory with Robert Saitzyk's The Last Beat. The film sounds like it's very much in the tradition of Gus Van Sant's not-Cobain film The Last Days. The Morrison character will be "Jay Douglas", an American rock star in Paris in the early seventies, negotiating complicated relationships with his "California soulmate, Valerie Eason" (read Pamela Courson) and "glamorous French countess, Clemence".The real Jim Morrison took up residence in Paris in March 1971, made some disastrous recordings with street musicians, and was dead by July in still not quite explained circumstances. He's buried in a famously scruffy grave in the Père Lachaise Cemetery.

Precious: Based On The Novel “Push” By Sapphire (Lionsgate) In-your-face, but undeniably powerful film that follows the plight of an overweight inner-city teen (Gabourey Sidbe, a real find) who must deal with an abusive mother (Mo’Nique, in a career-making turn for which she won a most-deserved Best Supporting Actress Oscar), a baby born of her abusive, and absent, father, and trying to survive day-to-day with few people to offer her help, save for a sympathetic teacher (Paula Patton) in a special ed program. Director/producer Lee Daniels, a former personal manager/producer-turned-filmmaker, brings a kitchen sink authenticity to the proceedings, along with a cast of famous powerhouse performers, who manage to disappear into their roles. Tough stuff, but not to be missed. Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay (Geoffrey Fletcher). Bonuses: Commentary by Daniels; Featurettes; Interviews with Sapphire and Daniels; Deleted scene. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.

The movie Fix redefines the term “fly by the seat of your pants.” In this film, Leo (played by Shawn Andrews) must attend court-ordered rehab by the end of the day, or he will have to return to prison. But rehab is expensive, and Leo can’t afford the $5000 it will cost him to go, so his brother Milo (Tao Ruspoli, the director) and Milo’s girlfriend Bella (Olivia Wilde, as seen on House) come to La to help him out. And by help him out, I mean they bring a camera and document the wildest adventure one day could encompass. Within 15 hours, the group participates in every scam they can think of, from selling a police dog to a motorcycle gang to stealing a car and selling it to parts places.
A film like this could have been either horrifyingly terrible or incredibly amazing, but Fix definitely falls into the latter category.

How did Tao Ruspoli land Olivia Wilde, best known as Thirteen on House, for his debut feature film? Easy, they’re married. Ruspoli is an award-winning documentary filmmaker who stays close to reality with his first fictional project – the story is inspired by his brother’s struggle with drug addiction. Wilde and Ruspoli play a documentary filmmaking couple who must race across Los Angeles to get his brother Leo into a rehab program by 8 pm, or else the brother faces three years of jail.
