ITV in the U.K. has acquired “Bali 2002,” a new four-part drama exploring the everyday heroes directly impacted by the terrorist bombings on the Indonesian island’s tourist hotspots 20 years ago. Represented by Banijay Rights, the drama stars Rachel Griffiths (“Total Control”), Richard Roxburgh (“Rake”) and Claudia Jesse (“Bridgerton”). It will air on the new streaming service Itvx next year.
“Bali 2002” was co-produced by Banijay labels, Endemol Shine Australia and Screentime, and marked the first original drama co-commissioned by the Australian streamer Stan and commercial TV group 9Network. The series premiered last month on Stan.
“Bali 2002” recounts the tragic events of October 12, 2002, when the island was shattered by a terrorist attack on two of Kuta Beach’s busiest nightclubs. Local Balinese, as well as Australian and British tourists, scrambled to rescue the injured, while the Australian and Indonesian authorities mobilized to evacuate survivors, identify victims and investigate what really took place.

Marvel projects may be drawing a slew of high-profile actors to Australia, but it seems there are also local productions inversely capable of attracting MCU talent.
Christopher James Baker has been back in his native country for the past year following more than a decade in New York, during which he starred in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, and also shot the upcoming DC Universe Series, Stargirl.
He has been able to hit the ground running following his return, with roles in Stan’s eight-part mystery drama Eden, as well as Goalpost’s gold rush drama New Gold Mountain.
Baker will first be seen in the former, which is set to premiere on the streaming platform on June 11.
The Every Cloud Productions/Balloon Entertainment series centres on the disappearance of a young woman and a subsequent chain of events that serves to lay bare dark and hidden secrets within the titular coastal town.

Fiona Eagger.
The biggest challenge facing TV producers next year is figuring out ways to keep Australian dramas screening on the free-to-air broadcasters, according to Fiona Eagger.
Eagger, who co-founded Every Cloud Productions with Deb Cox, welcomes the raising of the TV Producer Offset to 30 per cent but laments the abolition of the local content sub-quotas for Fta networks.
“For Australian producers our greatest challenge is keeping Australian drama alive on our free-to-airs,” she tells If. “All the networks want to keep making Australian drama because when it hits the sweet spot, it creates great audience loyalty to a brand.
“But they’re worried about their revenues and livelihoods so, hand-in-glove with Screen Australia and the state agencies, we have to be really clever in how we put deals together.
“We are resilient and inventive but it’s not easy when the government gives on one hand but takes away on the other hand.

If you’re writing something spooky, scary or chilling, Stephen King’s approval means a lot. The King of Horror has been publishing stories since the sixties and is responsible for some of the most terrifying tales of the modern era. Now, he’s chimed in on Netflix’s Reckoning, a show about the hunt for a serial killer who’s emerged from hibernation.
Writing on his Twitter account, King said the series was:
“A pretty good 10-episode limited series. Fine mystery plot generates bursts of maximum suspense. As a bonus, it’s a master class in how not to parent.”
Directed by Shawn Seet, Jennifer Leacey and Peter Andrikidis, Reckoning was first released in New Zealand in 2019 and premiered on domestic Netflix on May 1st. Since then, it hasn’t exactly set the world on fire, receiving little attention from critics or the public. There are a measly two reviews on Rotten Tomatoes,...

Doris Younane in ‘Five Bedrooms’
After years of fighting against being typecast as Lebanese or other Middle Eastern characters, actor Doris Younane is in a very happy place in her career.
She’s played a variety of characters, most of no specific ethnicity, in the past five years with recurring roles in Five Bedrooms, The Wrong Girl and Party Tricks plus guest appearances in Secret City, Harrow and Janet King.
“I just want to be seen as an actor in Australia,” she tells If. “I no longer want to be a pin-up for multiculturalism; I have passed that baton on to others. I’ve been really lucky. I think I am a good, solid actor and that’s what has got me through.”
Currently Younane is winning plaudits for her performance as the firebrand Heather in Five Bedrooms, Hoodlum Entertainment’s eight-part comedy-drama for Network 10 created by Christine Bartlett and Michael Lucas.

Writer-director Paul Dano and Ed Oxenbould on the set of ‘Wildlife’.
Ed Oxenbould rates his role in Paul Dano’s Wildlife, in which he stars alongside Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal, as among his favourites.
In the film, Oxenbould plays 14-year-old Joe, who has just moved to Montana with his parents Jeannette (Mulligan) and Jerry (Gyllenhaal). The ‘60s set coming-of-age tale centres on him as their marriage slowly disintegrates.
Oxenbould tells If that Joe is a complex, interesting character, who was bolstered through the writing of Dano and partner Zoe Kazan, who adapted Richard Ford’s novel of the same name.
“It was really different to anything I’d done before. It required a lot of emotion and a lot of watching, a lot of observing. That’s what made it seem really interesting; I thought it would be a great challenge.”

Throughout the year Los Angeles hosts a great number of festivals focused on highlighting the cinema of specific geographic regions or countries. Among them, the annual South East European Film Festival in Los Angeles allows American audiences the opportunity to experience films from about 18 countries of South East Europe, showcasing diversity of cultures and cinematic talents.
SEEfest was twice the recipient of the prestigious festival grant from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and five other awards for programming excellence from the State of California, County and City of Los Angeles, and Cities of Beverly Hills and West Hollywood.
The 2016 edition of the festival runs April 28 – May 5 at Ahrya Fine Arts and Music Hall in Beverly Hills, the Goethe-Institut Los Angeles and West Hollywood Council Chambers/Library. This year the program focuses on the many faces of exile, both external and internal, and includes stories both piercing and lifting that share as many facets of the human experience of exile as there are films. A full slate of high quality features and timely documentaries will begin on Opening night April 28 at Ahrya Fine Arts theater with the premiere of Bosnia’s Oscar entry "Our Everyday Life," directed by Ines Tanović, who will attend the screening.
The festival was designed to showcase the cinema from South East Europe, a part of the world that is as tumultuous as it is fascinating. “We are deeply honored to have several wonderful films on the program that do what cinema does best, take us up close and personal with real people on a perilous trek toward uncertain future,” says SEEfest Founder and Artistic Director, Vera Mijojlić.
The list of acclaimed features and documentaries include a young boy’s journey across hostile borders in search of a father in Visar Morina’s "Babai," which was Kosovo's Oscar entry at the most recent Academy Awards; a documentary about refugees "Logbook_Serbistan"" by the celebrated Serbian director and lifelong rebel, Želimir Žilnik; a romantic comedy from Australia about Greek-Muslim love, "Alex & Eve" by Peter Andrikidis; Bulgarian coming-of-ager "Losers," a self-deprecating reference to the society at large by Ivaylo Hristov; Serbian morality tale about corrosive hidden truths, "A Good Wife" by celebrated Eastern European actress-turned-director Mirjana Karanović and which premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival; a love story on the mine fields dotting the border-crossings between Turkey and Greece, "Riverbanks" by Greek director Panos Karkanevatos; a photographer’s album of the 20th century in "The Eye of Istanbul" from Turkey, by Binnur Karaevli and Fatih Kaymak; the riveting political thriller "Why Me?" by Tudor Giurgiu from Romania; Serbia's moving Oscar entry "Enclave" by veteran helmer Goran Radovanović, and more films ranging in cinematic sensibility from quiet observation to irreverent humor.

Thrilled with The Dressmaker.s opening weekend, producer Sue Maslin is confident a Us deal for Jocelyn Moorhouse.s dramedy will be signed this week.
UK-based sales agent Embankment Films pre-sold the comedy/mystery/thriller/revenge saga starring Kate Winslet, Judy Davis, Liam Hemsworth, Sarah Snook and Hugo Weaving to more than 30 territories including the UK, Canada, Spain, Germany, Italy and China.
But a deal in the Us, where CAA reps the film with Embankment, had proved elusive until now. .It.s been very difficult,. Director Peter Andrikidis probably never dreamt his name would appear in the same sentence as Steven Spielberg, but that was before he knew their films would open in Australian cinemas on the same day.
It was a mismatch in budgets, scale of release and advertising campaigns but Andrikidis. Alex + Eve and Spielberg.s Bridge of Spies both had respectable debuts in another lousy weekend for ticket sales.
Spielberg.s highly entertaining Cold War mystery/drama starring Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, John Scott Shepherd and Amy Ryan drummed up $1.8 million on 300 screens including previews.
Pro-rata, that is a bit better than the $US15.3 million debut in the Us, where the Fox/DreamWorks release dropped by a modest 26 per cent in its second weekend, scoring $32.5 million so far - probably a pointer to its holding power here.

Director Peter Andrikidis and writer Alex Lykos have produced a winning family comedy, with a top cast and a scene-stealing Tony Nikolakopoulos
Veteran director Peter Andrikidis has had a big impact on Australian television, a quiet achiever whose approach to storytelling puts plot and performances well ahead of a distinct authorial style. Andrikidis’s CV spans over three decades and during that period he has collected nine AFI/Aacta awards, which makes him one of the most gong-studded Australian directors in history.

The Greek Australian TV and film director behind new romcom Alex & Eve already has three decades of cross-cultural storytelling under his belt
In 1982, Peter Andrikidis, Greek, twentysomething and newly graduated from the Australian Film Television and Radio School, was watching TV with his grandfather. The show was Cop Shop, and John Orcsik (actually of Hungarian descent) was playing a Greek detective. His grandfather was blown away. A Greek cop in a show about Australians! Greeks could be Australians?

Propelled by Oddball and Blinky Bill: The Movie, next week Australian films are set to smash the record for the biggest B.O. total in a single year.
The feature films and docs released in 2015 plus holdovers have amassed an estimated $61.8 million.
Produced by Steve Kearney and Richard Keddie and directed by Stuart McDonald, Oddball raked in $3.55 million in its second week, lifting its earnings to $6.3 million. Deane Taylor.s Blinky Bill climbed to $1.9 million after pocketing a tad over $1 million in its sophomore session.
So by the end of next week the 2015 total will surpass the current record of $63.4 million set in 2001, the year of Moulin Rouge!, Lantana, The Man Who Sued God and Crocodile Dundee in La..
In that year the Australian films. market share was 7.8 per cent. If the 2001 total was adjusted for inflation then 2015 would not be a record in real terms but the market share is a consistent barometer.

The Belanglo State Forest, scene of Ivan Milat.s grisly serial murders, is such a forbidding place the producers of the Seven Network.s Catching Milat chose to avoid the area.
Only director Peter Andrikidis and DoP Joe Pickering visited the area south of Berrima but they used a drone camera to film the location.
.It.s such an eerie place I didn.t want to go there when they did the tech survey,. Kerrie Mainwaring, who produced the two-part Shine Australia miniseries with Rory Callaghan, tells If.
Instead, the cast and crew shot the crime drama in Terrey Hills, St Ives, Balmain, Glebe, Wattle Grove and Parramatta.
As the title suggests, the focus is not on Ivan Milat but on the marathon investigation into the 1990s backpacker murders that led to his arrest and conviction.

Broadcast networks in Australia and around the world that don.t embrace the diversity of their local cultures in their programming will lose audiences to other media outlets that address that need.

The Us guild.s national director of Equal Employment Opportunity (Eeo) and Diversity, Moore will deliver a keynote speech, Diversifying the Scene on Screen, at the Sydney Theatre Co on October 26.

HBO Asia.s first original co-production with ABC TV, Serangoon Road, promises to be one of the biggest mini-series to hit Australia, although recreating the action-packed streets of 1960s Singapore came at a steep price.
