One of 2024’s obsessions is “Feud: “Capote vs. the Swans.” The FX on Hulu limited series revolves around the best-selling novelist Truman Capote‘s friendship with several of the highest of New York’s society women include Babe Paley, Slim Keith and Lee Radziwill, the sister of Jackie Kennedy Onassis. When cinephiles of a certain sensibility talk about the best decades for horror, they’ll probably point to the 1980s with its explosion of cutting-edge special effects and home video-induced demand for material. Or they might point to the era of Universal Pictures’ domination in the 1930s, followed up then by the moody Val Lewton thrillers of the 1940s. What's it all about, Alfie? The master of suspense goes in an unusual direction with this murder mystery with a Catholic background. And foreground. Actually, it's a regular guidebook for proper priest deportment, and it's so complex that we wonder if Hitchcock himself had a full grip on it. Montgomery Clift is extremely good atop a top-rank cast that includes Anne Baxter and Karl Malden. Rated less exciting by audiences, this is really one of Hitch's best. Day of the Dead post: Cinema's Top Five Scariest Living Dead We should all be eternally grateful to the pagans, who had the foresight to come up with many (most?) of the overworked Western world's religious holidays. Thanks to them, besides Easter, Christmas, New Year's, and possibly Mardi Gras (a holiday in some countries), we also have Halloween, All Saints' Day, and the Day of Dead. The latter two are public holidays in a number of countries with large Catholic populations. Since today marks the end of the annual Halloween / All Saints' Day / Day of the Dead celebrations, I'm posting my revised and expanded list of the movies' Top Five Scariest Living Dead. Of course, by that I don't mean the actors listed below were dead when the movies were made.

Earlier this month, Criterion released a gorgeous new edition of Jack Clayton's The Innocents, a 1961 adaptation of Henry James's The Turn of the Screw that to this day still ranks among the greatest of horror films. Such an accomplishment cannot be overstated: Horror is one of the most subjective of genres, and thus also among the most susceptible to the vagaries of time and passing fashions. Why The Innocents still retains its ability to terrify us, more than 50 years after its release, is worth exploring, particularly within the context of the tremendously underrated Clayton’s broader career. Revived as part of the British Film Institute’s celebration of all things Gothic, Clayton’s superlative 1961 adaptation of the Henry James’s The Turn of the Screw has a subtlety and nuance that few contemporary horror movies can match. Truman Capote’s screenplay (which takes its title from William Archibald’s 1950 dramatisation of the James story) is deliberately open-ended. We are left to make up our own mind whether something diabolical really is going on or whether it’s all the result of the feverish imaginings of the repressed governess Miss Giddens (Deborah Kerr).

Actress Sarah Jessica Parker is putting off plans to return to Broadway to focus on motherhood - because she can't bear to miss putting her young children to bed. The "Sex and the City" star, 45, first appeared on the New York stage at the age of 11, in a revival of William Archibald's play "The Innocents", before going on to land a role in a 1977 production of the musical "Annie".
