The other night, I had a hankering to watch a good high-concept movie I'd never seen before. I saw 2014's "Coherence" on a few lists, and being almost wholly unfamiliar with it, I decided to fire it up and give it a shot. Thankfully, this film gave me exactly what I was looking for.
Emily Baldoni, Maury Sterling, Nicholas Brendon, Elizabeth Gracen, Alex Manugian, Lauren Maher, Hugo Armstrong, and eventual "Hustlers" director Lorene Scafaria star in this ultra-low budget brain melter about a group of friends gathering for a dinner party while a comet passes by overhead. When the power goes out, a couple of them trek up the street to a neighboring house with the lights on -- only to discover something that shakes them to their core. I won't get into the specifics here, but the film has an incredible conceit, and director James Ward Byrkit, who shot...

We’ve all seen those videos online of famous auditions where an actor reveals themselves and offers up a vulnerable performance in front of a dingy handheld camera. More often than not they show a moment of pure talent in its rawest state and give us, the audience, an insight into what led them to be selected for a renowned role. What we don’t see is the countless other auditions that are being taped every day where actors have to expose themselves for opportunities that may or may not be worth it. Hugo De Sousa captures the strange, exploitative nature of these scenarios in his latest short Je Ne Suis Pas Une Star De Cinéma, which sees an actor audition for an undisclosed project. It’s a tense, difficult watch but raises some fascinating questions about the nature of the entertainment industry and how much you should (or shouldn...

Figuring out a way to depict the afterlife on screen may be one of the biggest challenges a filmmaker could take on. How do you live up to the images people have of these places in their minds? The places so many hope to go to on one side, and fear going to on the other. How can a camera capture the glory of one, and the eternal nightmare of another?...

"How long you said you been out here?" "A while… a long while." Terror Films has revealed an official US trailer for an indie film titled Mister Limbo, from filmmaker Robert G. Putka. This premiered at a few film festivals last year and will be out on VOD to watch in September. Here's one synopsis: A young man in a parachute lands in the middle of a desert. He does not remember who he is or how he got there. As he tries to find his way home, he'll come across several people who also seem to wander through this wasteland. Another synopsis adds that it's: "A warm buddy film at heart - but hopefully also a rumination on existential themes such as regret, cynicism, faith, and empathy." The film is inspired by the director's own breakdown in 2016, which he is still healing from. So he wrote this story, "that...

Following the aftermath of a horrific accident, Chloe (Alexys Gabrielle) voluntarily submits herself to experimental treatment to both help her recover her lost memories and recover emotionally from the accident. The treatment is progressive – for Chloe must spend time in a house packed with the latest in artificial intelligence, Artificially Intelligent Domestic Assistant or Aida for short (voiced by Emily Atack); a home automation system that acts as an AI nurse, tracking and caring for Chloe through every stage of her rehabilitation.
But then this film is called Dark Cloud isn’t it? Which can only mean one thing. Something is going to go wrong with Chloe’s treatment. Right? Right. After all, AI has been the source of all things evil since Stanley Kubrick’s 2001. Speaking of which,...

For years video games have clamoured to make the gaming experience more cinematic. Which is now the reason we have games like Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, The Last of Us and Until Dawn – games that edge more towards the “interactive adventures” we were promised back in the full-motion video era of gaming (remember those?). But what if it was the other way round? What if films looked to video games for inspiration? We’d probably end up with something like Burning Dog.
Shot completely from the hero’s perspective, a la Fps video games, Burning Dog is obviously inspired not only by video games but by Hardcore Henry, the 2016 film starring Sharlito Copley, which told the story of...

When you’re as big a star as Denzel Washington is, you pretty much have your pick of the litter, project wise. As such, when a curveball is thrown by the actor, it’s worth noting. This week, Washington tackles something very different with Roman J. Israel, Esq. The film itself struggles, but Washington will be the focus. In fact, it wouldn’t be a surprise at all if Oscar decides that it’s worth yet another Best Actor nomination for the man. That will be the main curiosity here, as Washington always finds himself in contention, especially when it’s a showcase for his acting like this one seeks to be. This movie combines elements of a character study with elements of a legal thriller. In short, it follows title character Roman J. Israel (Washington) as he attempts to crusade for what’s right. A relic of the past to most,...

Chicago – He is a familiar character actor, having a long career with roles in TV and film as diverse as “Fargo,” “The Drew Carey Show,” “Gran Torino,” “The Americans.” and the recent “Jackie” and “The Founder.” He is actor John Carroll Lynch, and he has made his directorial debut in the wonderfully essential “Lucky,” whose title character is portrayed by Harry Dean Stanton. The film is a perfect elegy for the actor, who passed away last month at the age of 91.
“Lucky” was voted in as the Audience Choice favorite at the 5th annual Chicago Critics Film Festival in May of this year, and has a nationwide release on October 6th, 2017. It features Harry Dean as Lucky, a 90-year-old self described atheist who is seeking spiritual enlightenment through the fellow travelers in his small and dusty Arizona town. He’s outlived his contemporaries, and seeks to outdo and out smoke...

“Room 104” isn’t like anything else you’ll see on television this year. The new half-hour, genre-bending HBO series features a number of unique facets, but they all relate back, in one way or another, to the creative minds of Mark and Jay Duplass.
The writers, producers, directors, and actors known for breakout independent films like “The Puffy Chair” and “Cyrus” as well as award-winning television like “Togetherness” and “Transparent” have come together to create the latest exciting original series on the Home Box Office network.
Set in a single room in your typical American motel chain, each week tells a different story and all 12 episodes of Season 1 were produced by the Duplass Brothers. The tone, characters, and era can all change week-to-week, and viewers should be ready for drama, comedy, horror, and at the start of each new entry. Is the Clark family the third wheel of the zombie apocalypse on this week's Fear The Walking Dead?
This review contains spoilers.

3.6 Red Dirt
For a drama-heavy hour with so much promise, I wanted to like Red Dirt more than I did. Indeed, this episode has domestic drama to spare, presenting a family rife with dysfunction. This is great from a storytelling perspective—the more conflict, the better. The only problem? The heart of Red Dirt rightfully belongs to the Ottos, and yet they’re forced to share the spotlight with the Clark family. Had this not been the case, this could have easily been a top notch episode. The Otto family is slowly coming apart at the seams, and as such, so is the insular community that calls the ranch home.

Jay and Mark Duplass are creators who don’t like to be put in a box, even if they’re making six hours of television set within the same four walls.
“Room 104,” the new HBO anthology series from the Duplass brothers, tells individual, episodic stories in each of its 12 half-hour installments, and all 12 are set within the same cheap, dingy hotel room. The first episode, which premiered at the Atx TV Festival Saturday evening, is a lot closer to Mark Duplass’ work in indie films “Creep” and “The One I Love” than the brothers’ former HBO comedy.
During a panel discussion following the episode, Duplass said he felt inspired by the constraints of the premise.
“I have something like 218 ideas in a Word document on my computer,” Duplass said.
Noting how it felt like he was back making low-budget indie films, Duplass said he wrote seven of the 12 episodes...

Sony and Dan Gilroy’s untitled law drama has added Hugo Armstrong opposite Denzel Washington and Colin Farrell, according to a new report from Deadline.
The picture formerly known as Inner City will be written and directed by Dan Gilroy, who recently had a hand in the screenplay for Legendary reboot Kong: Skull Island. Indeed, Gilroy’s other screenwriting credits include The Bourne Legacy and the haunting Jake Gyllenhaal drama Nightcrawler, which nabbed an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay two years ago. It certainly makes for an eclectic mix of projects, and that has us all the more intrigued by Inner City Gilroy’s as-yet-untitled drama.
A brief synopsis relayed by Deadline confirms that the director’s latest creative venture centers on a “Los Angeles attorney by the name of Roman Israel (Denzel Washington) is offered a job at a prestigious law firm after the death of his longtime...

However, they’ll both be in front of the camera this time.

Sometimes you just have to get away. Far, far away. Sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees. And sometimes those trees seem to get to talking to you. Fuck.Filmmakers Daniel Martinico & Hugo Armstrong came to Slamdance in 2012 with Ok, Good, about an actor getting in touch with his rawest self. They return this year with their second feature collaboration Excursions, about two city-dwelling couples on the search for utter transcendence. But what if that transcendence is forced? Director Martinico co-writes and produces with Armstrong, who also stars, along with Jacqueline Wright, Cody Henderson and Mandy Freund, in what could very well be described as Michael Hanake's The Seventh Continent via a hot yoga class. Starting with drinking and a series of...

Los Angeles is a city where dreams are made. But, for most people looking to find a career in the entertainment industry, this town can become an unending nightmare. The torture of an L.A. working actor’s existence is exquisitely captured in Daniel Martinico‘s Ok, Good.
This is Martinico’s first feature film, but like his video installation pieces and short films such as Khan and Bike Thief, he maximizes the technique of repetition to terrific effect, which immediately immerses the audience into the mind-numbing life of the movie’s main character, Paul Kaplan (Hugo Armstrong), as he blandly travels from commercial auditions to acting workshops to a headshot procurement that escalates into an epic battle.
Kaplan has no life other than his acting — no friends, no family, no hobbies. He attempts to console himself through listening to life affirmation tapes driving from one mundane task to another.

Coherence centres on eight friends enjoying a very grown up, suburban dinner party. A comet is passing by Earth and changes to the atmosphere are making some of them jumpy and uncomfortable. An unexplainable shattered iPhone screen is an early warning sign that something unusual is coming their way. During what seems like the longest night, their real lives, jarred by this astronomical anomaly, are confronted with multiple, alternative realities of themselves.
Their problems start with a power cut and the intriguing sight of just one house in the entire neighbourhood that still has its lights on. Two of the dinner party go and investigate. When they return one has a cut on his head and doesn’t want to talk about what he’s seen.

From D Films, Sneak Peek director/cinematogapher James Ward Byrkit's impressive, "Twilight Zone"-inspired debut science fiction thriller "Coherence", now available on DVD/VOD/Est:
"Coherence" is based on 'quantum mechanics', referring to a quantum state, where different versions of reality can still interchange with each other.
Director Byrkit did have a specific idea for the film, but cast improvisational actors, giving them the basic outline of their characters, motivations and major plot points:
"...'Emily' (Baldoni) and her boyfriend 'Kevin' (Maury Sterling) are two of several people attending a dinner party at the house of 'Mike' (Nicholas Brendon).
"Kevin's ex-girlfriend' 'Laurie' (Lauren Maher) will be there, making things tense for both Kevin and Emily.
"The dinner party goes fairly well until the power goes out following a comet sighting. They discover that a house down the road still has power and a few of them decide to investigate.

Schrodinger's cat is an imaginary illustration of a paradox: "When does a quantum system stop existing as a superposition of states and become one or the other?" Writer/director James Ward Byrkit explores this thought experiment and various results in his first feature, Coherence, which adds a new dimension to the typical dinner party film.
Coherence evolves at an intimate dinner gathering of four couples: former dancer Em (Emily Baldoni) and Kevin (Maury Sterling), former Roswell actor Mike (Nicholas Brendon) and his introverted wife Lee (Lorene Scafaria), older couple Hugh (Hugo Armstrong) and Beth (Elizabeth Gracen), and Amir (Alex Manugian) who brings his new girlfriend Laurie (Lauren Maher).
It's quickly revealed that Laurie has an intimate history with Kevin, which leads to awkward moments, but Em is more concerned about something she's heard -- the astronomic event of a lifetime taking place that same night. Miller's Comet is due to pass near Earth,...

One of the surprise treats of this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival is low-key sci-fi thriller, Coherence: the sort of film where walking in with no expectations is the best way to approach things (but please do keep reading this review).
James Ward Byrkit‘s feature follows a group of old friends whose dinner party is cut short by a power outage, thought to have been caused by the passing of a comet that night. Part of the group ventures across the street to the one remaining house with power where they discover the full psychological horror of their predicament.
Due to the unexpected narrative direction of Brykit’s screenplay it would be unfair to go into the detail...

Title: Coherence Directed By: James Ward Byrkit Starring: Emily Foxler, Maury Sterling, Nicholas Brendon, Lorene Scafaria, Elizabeth Gracen, Hugo Armstrong, Alex Manugian, Lauren Maher There’s more suspense in this low budget dialogue-driven sci-fi thriller than many effect-heavy, $100 million+ blockbuster wannabes. “Coherence” focuses on Em (Emily), Kevin (Maury Sterling), Mike (Nicholas Brendon), Lee (Lorene Scafaria), Beth (Elizabeth Gracen), Hugh (Hugo Armstrong), Amir (Alex Manugian) and Laurie (Lauren Maher), a group of friends reuniting for a dinner party. It’s all small talk and a little bit of gossip until the lights go out. Power goes out all the time for various reasons, but the strange thing is, the entire neighborhood is [ Read More ]

Like the better episodes of The Twilight Zone, Christopher Nolan’s Memento and Shane Carruth’s Primer before it, indie sci-fi Coherence is a brilliantly staged and sharply written mindscrew of a movie that left me equal parts giddy, chilled and bewildered. It’s easily one of the most thought-provoking and deeply engrossing cinematic experiences of the year – not to mention a highly auspicious debut for writer-director James Ward Byrkit.
It’s hard to talk about Coherence without spoiling its many fascinating twists and turns, but I’ll do my best. Our protagonists are eight friends who come together for a dinner party on the night of an astronomical anomaly – “Miller’s Comet,” which is passing closer to Earth than ones recorded in the past. As Coherence opens, hints of the comet’s influence can be seen in broken phone screens and disrupted signals.

Deploys twisty sci-fi concepts to warp the almost-clichéd dinner-party soap opera into a horror story of the human condition in the face of quantum philosophy. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m hungry for smart science fiction
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Pro relationship tip: Do not go to a dinner party with a bunch of your friends who all have long-term interconnected relationships — with all the unresolved resentments and secret entanglements that can come with that — when there’s a quantum anomaly in the neighborhood. Not when there are important, even life-changing, decisions to be made at the same time.
See, just as Em (Emily Foxler: Ghosts of Girlfriends Past) is having to decide whether to fly off to Vietnam with her boyfriend, Kevin (Maury Sterling: Veronica Mars, The A-Team), for four months to accompany him for his work,...

Filmmaking debuts don’t get much more fascinating, or promising, than the horror-tinged sci-fi tale Coherence, the first feature from writer-director James Ward Byrkit, which begins its theatrical run this Friday. A full trailer has been released for a solid-looking psychological thriller called Coherence. It was written and directed by James Ward Byrkit, and the story follows the events of a night when an “astrological anomaly” affects life on Earth. I enjoy watching movies that are supposed to mess with your head like this.
On the night of an astrological anomaly, eight friends at a dinner party experience a troubling chain of reality bending events. Part cerebral sci-fi and part relationship drama, Coherence is a tightly focused, intimately shot film that quickly ratchets up with tension and mystery.
The movie stars Emily Baldoni, Maury Sterling, Nicholas Brendon, Elizabeth Gracen, Alex Manugian, Lauren Maher, Hugo Armstrong, and Lorene Scafaria. It's set to be released in theaters and VOD on June 20th. I'll definitely be checking this one out.

One of the more intriguing thrillers I saw out of Fantastic Fest last year was Coherence. It's more sci-fi in nature, but it has the pulse of a sinister Twilight Zone episode that I think horror fans will enjoy.
