Before he dons the classic black cape and cowl of the Dark Knight in the third and final installment in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises, Christian Bale will be putting on the black and white collar of a clergyman in director Zhang Yimou's (Hero) new $90 million period drama, Nanjing Heroes. The movie is based upon Yan Geling's novel The 13 Women of Nanjing and focuses on the horrific true story of the 1937 "Nanjing Massacre," a six-week period during the Second Sino-Japanese War in which soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army slaughtered hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians and unarmed soldiers and raped tens of thousands of women. The movie will go into production in January and be shot approximately 40 percent in English and the rest in Mandarin. Bale has the featured English-speaking role of John, an American Catholic priest who shelters a group of women during the incident.

Dark Knight star Christian Bale is to headline a new Chinese film about that country's 1937 Nanjing Massacre. Hr report that the film, which is entirely funded by China's own film industry, will utilise the VFX teams behind Saving Private Ryan and The Dark Knight. The news about Bale and the hiring of Joss Williams and Martin Asbury's Dark Side FX was revealed yesterday in a press conference to Chinese reporters.
Nanjing Heroes, directed by Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers), will be a mixed-language production (40/50% Engish-Mandarin), and will feature Bale in the role of an American priest who helps various victims of the massacre to safety. Other recent Chinese-produced films about the massacre have featured German businessman John Rabe as the 'Western hook', and it has not been made clear if Bale's character is a semi-fictionalised construct or a direct biographical portrayal.
