Richard Roundtree’s two-fisted detective tale burst on the scene announcing that a craze called Blaxploitation was on the way. No matter that the movie is somewhat slow and drab — John Shaft was the identification figure denied black audiences for 60 years, a hero who takes no guff from nobody and consistently tells The Man where to head in. Even bigger was the music theme by Isaac Hayes, which transforms Shaft’s casual stroll through Times Square into an iconic image of the 1970s. Criterion’s presentation of Gordon Parks’ smash hit has the original feature in 4K Uhd and in Blu-ray with the first sequel Shaft’s Big Score! in Blu-ray only.

Most noted for its troubled production background, this hospital-set murder thriller turns a doctor into a detective: James Coburn’s medico undertakes an amateur investigation of a crime involving an illegal abortion, and the cover-up thereof. Although tangled up in the crazy James Aubrey-Kirk Kerkorian regime at MGM, Blake Edwards’ film can boast a strong supporting cast: Jennifer O’Neill, Pat Hingle, Elizabeth Allan, Dan O’Herlihy, James Hong, Michael Blodgett, Regis Toomey and John Hillerman.

MGM’s old-fashioned Irving Berlin musical has superior songs and powerful performances, especially that of Betty Hutton. She gets plenty loud and rambunctious, but it fits the ‘big’ Annie Oakley character. And the talented, under-appreciated Howard Keel really fires up the screen with her in songs like ‘Anything You Can Do.’ The Wac disc contains plenty of George Feltenstein- rescued unused audio material, plus footage … depressing footage … of Judy Garland’s attempt in the leading role. Yep, the show may be PC minefield begging for a Cancel Culture intervention, but if it goes we’ll have to put most of Hollywood film history in a landfill.

John Boyd has been upped to a series regular on FBI for the CBS drama’s current second season. His first episode as a series regular will air on October 22.
Boyd plays Agent Stuart Scola, a silver-tongued, fast-talking, quick-witted former Wall Streeter-turned-fbi agent. He’s a Reddit-exploring Ivy Leaguer whose do-gooder sensibilities belie his born-and-bred New York cynicism.
As Deadline exclusively reported, Bones alum Boyd in August was tapped for a recurring role on FBI,now playing Agent Stuart Scola. He was set to appear in three episodes, with an option to become a series regular. That option has been exercised.
FBI is a fast-paced drama about the inner workings of the New York office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Boyd will be joining series regulars Missy Peregrym, Zeeko Zaki, Jeremy Sisto, Ebonée Noel and Alana De La Garza.
The series is produced by Universal Television in association with CBS Television Studios.

Criterion has release a deluxe Blu-ray edition of director Peter Brook's 1963 screen adaptation of William Golding's landmark novel Lord of the Flies. As virtually anyone familiar with literature of the latter half of the twentieth century probably knows, the story involves a group of British schoolboys who are among the refugees deported from England out the outbreak of what is, presumably, a third world war. Their plane is shot down over the ocean but it crashes off shore from a remote island. All of the adults die but the boys miraculously survive and make their way to dry land. Realizing their survival is in their own hands, the boys (the age of whom ranges from pre-pubescent to early teens) set about the task of building shelters. They quickly master the essentials of staying alive and learn to start fires and to hunt and fish with reasonably effective hand-made tools.

Mad Men was already dead to me with the way they treated Sal, and fortunately it will be dead to the world soon enough, as creator Matt Weiner says he won’t take the critical favorite past six seasons.
Forbes is smoking the good stuff, because they’ve got a list of the hardest working actors in Hollywood, and somehow stuck Seth Rogen at the top of the list, having never heard of Neil Patrick Harris’ four billion projects. They even find Seth to be busier than their #2, Morgan Freeman, and he’s in everything!
Critics seem to appreciate American Idiot, even if it’s not exactly what the New York City theater snobs would call a “musical.” Still, when it opens on Tuesday, they all agree that it will...

Lord Of The Flies star James Aubrey has died at the age of 62.
The former child actor passed away at his home in Lincolnshire, England on 6 April after losing his battle with pancreatitis.
Born James Aubrey Tregidgo in Austria in 1947, the Brit scored his first role when he was just a schoolboy, handpicked by director Peter Brook to portray Ralph in the classic 1963 movie adaptation.
He went on to carve out a career on the stage and in British television, later landing a part in 1970s U.K. series Bouquet of Barbed Wire and its spin off, Another Bouquet, while his other film credits include 1983's The Hunger and Richard Attenborough's apartheid drama Cry Freedom in 1987.
Aubrey also starred in British detective series Dalziel and Pascoe, Silent Witness and Heartbeat, and appeared briefly as a child on Broadway, in the 1962 theatre flop Isle of Children, which closed after just 11 performances.
He is survived by his sister Janet Fleming, and his daughter Sarah, from a previous marriage, reports the New York Times.

Actor known for his roles in Lord of the Flies and TV's Bouquet of Barbed Wire
It must be galling for an actor who has a reasonable track record of films, stage and television, stretching over decades, to be remembered mainly for a role he played right at the beginning of his career. It hints, often unfairly, that everything was downhill thereafter. A case in point was James Aubrey, who was 14 when he played Ralph, one of the principal characters in Peter Brook's film of Lord of the Flies (1963), a part for which he was highly praised.
Aubrey, who has died of cancer aged 62, was one of 30 British schoolboys chosen by Brook out of 3,000 candidates. In attempting to duplicate the conditions depicted in William Golding's novel about children on a desert island who have survived a plane crash, Brook transported his young cast to the island of Vieques,...
