Feature number three for the Coen Brothers is an eccentric gangster saga with a wonderful slate of mugs — Gabriel Byrne, John Turturro, Albert Finney, Jon Polito, J.E. Freeman, Steve Buscemi — slinging highly entertaining hardboiled dialogue. The witty, insightful story is at heart not a comedy, and the direction impresses in the formal sense — no superfluous camera acrobatics this time. Barry Sonnenfeld’s visual stick in the mind — the Byrne-Turturro execution scene in the woods is one of the highlights of 1990s filmmaking.

Benjamin Bratt isn’t sure whether he would be able to rise up as a leader in dystopian future like his character, Parco Delgado, in “Dmz.” “It’s tough enough being a dad and a good one at that. It takes a lot of focus, a lot of concentration, a lot of work and a lot of invested time and love, but it is my favorite focus at the moment,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). But the idea of whether he could do such a thing reinforced something that he truly loved about this story. “It’s when circumstances press upon you enough where it forces you outside of your own perception of yourself and into actions that you might not have otherwise undertaken, where true leaders rise to the occasion.”

“Overnight!” That’s what Holland Taylor infamously shouted 23 years ago when she won her first career Emmy Award in Best Drama Supporting Actress for playing fan-favorite judge Roberta Kittleson on “The Practice.” (Watch the 1999 flashback video below.) Can the esteemed actress now win an Emmy bookend for her role as English professor Joan Hambling on the Netflix comedy “The Chair”? This time around she’s competing in the red-hot Best Comedy Supporting Actress race.
“The Chair” tells the story of professor colleagues at Pembroke University, led by new English department head Ji-Yoon Kim (Sandra Oh). Despite their age differences, Joan and Ji-Yoon share a friendly rapport with each other at first, though their relationship is put to the test in later episodes. Eventually, Joan is forced to give a vote of no confidence against Ji-Yoon, and the season ends with Joan replacing her as chair.

In the late 1990s, ABC’s “The Practice” followed in the path of other legal dramas like “The Defenders” and “L.A. Law” by winning the Emmy for Best Drama Series two years in a row. Its second victory in 1999 came with three acting wins as well, for Edward Herrmann (Guest Actor), Michael Badalucco (Supporting Actor), and Holland Taylor (Supporting Actress). Ultimately, 22 different performers would earn 27 bids for their work on the series, placing it behind “ER” as having the second-highest number of individual acting nominees.
In winning her category, Taylor defeated two of her castmates: Lara Flynn Boyle and 1998 champion Camryn Manheim. Her episode submission, “End Games,” included a storyline devoted to her character, a lascivious judge, dealing with a personal sexual harassment lawsuit from a former clerk. At the time, Taylor was the third oldest victor in her category, but has since moved to 10th place.

Taylor’s victory as Best Drama Supporting Actress was a bit of a shocker that year, especially considering she was a recurring guest star on the ABC legal series competing against series regulars like Lara Flynn Boyle and Camryn Manheim from her own show as well as Kim Delaney (“NYPD Blue”) and Nancy Marchand (“The Sopranos”). Can Taylor now win a bookend trophy for her role as savvy casting director Ellen Kincaid on the Netflix limited series “Hollywood”?
At the Emmy podium, Taylor took a beat as she looked down at the crumpled paper in her hand. “I’m so glad I wrote something,” she declared before adding, “I’m so sorry I can’t see it.

Like a lot of actors who’ve had long, incredibly varied careers, John Turturro gets approached by a number of different folks when he’s out in public. The 63-year-old can usually tell what they recognize him from within a few seconds. “If they have kids, it’s almost always Transformers,” he says, referring to his recurring role in the action-figure film franchise. “Parents watch those movies with their kids a hundred times! Ausiello: I hear the Nov. 20 episode will end with a cliffhanger, but whether or not it’s on par with the climax in the 2013 fall finale is probably subjective. Spike Lee's picture of 1977 New York can hardly be faulted historically, but was there a more compelling story to tell?
Director: Spike Lee
Entertainment grade: B-
History grade: A-
Between July 1976 and August 1977, a serial killer known as Son of Sam terrorised New York City.
Crime
As films about real-life serial killers go, Summer of Sam is unusual. Rather than having either the killer or an investigator as the lead, it focuses on a fictional group of Italian-Americans who live in the neighbourhood in which Son of Sam is killing. Sharp-eyed viewers familiar with New York City may notice this seems to be the Bronx. In real life, Son of Sam's crimes were mostly committed in Queens. As he wrote in his most famous letter, (which is quoted in the film, though without this particular line): "I love to hunt. Prowling the streets looking for fair game – tasty meat.

The rise of technology and newer entertainment formats has left behind a number of movies, some of which never graduated to VHS, DVD or even cable. One of those "forgotten" movies has recently hit DVD and Blu-Ray from the fine folks at Kino Lorber, the micro-indie "The Search For One-Eyed Jimmy." Of course, this particular film benefitted from having a stellar cast, most of whom are regularly working today, which has helped the picture rise above the number of undistributed films during the indie boom era. Of course, once you finish the film, you'll wonder exactly how so much talent got together to amount to so little.

With True Grit receiving widespread acclaim earlier this year, Joel and Ethan Coen are more successful than they’ve ever been. The duo are responsible for a varied history of films all wildly different from the last, with a unique ability to take any genre and create something which feels both uniquely their own, as well as a perfect film from the genre to which it fits the most.
Millers Crossing for example, is perhaps one of the greatest gangster films ever made – but it’s also completely unlike any other film in the bulging genre. The scene in which a dead man has his toupee stolen by a young boy and his dog will only be found in a gangster movie written and directed by Joel & Ethan Coen.

You know that Kiefer Sutherland web series? The one that debuted on Hulu where the former CTU agent plays a God-fearing, Roman Catholic, repentant hit man alongside John Hurt, Michael Badalucco, and Sebastian Becaon? The one that’s directed by Brad Mirman and distributed by Digital Broadcasting Group? The one that’s called The Confession? Yeah, that one! It’s being turned into a movie. Dave McNary at Variety reports Image Entertainment made a non-live streamed announcement at Cannes that the “integrated home entertainment company” is in final negotiations to obtain the rights to title. Image plans to reformat the online original into a feature-length film, for which it will own the “home entertainment and digital rights.” If and when the film gets made, The Confession will be one of a very select group of original web series to make the jump from the computer to silver screens. A few months ago it was announced that an episode of 'Bones' would serve as a back-door pilot for a spin-off series based on Richard Greener's 'The Locator' series. While not a true spin-off of the long-running Fox series, it would fall within the 'Bones' universe, creating possible crossover opportunities.
But this begs a question: Why hasn't there been a real 'Bones' spin-off during its six seasons on the air? There have been numerous guests and recurring Squinterns who have been interesting enough to merit their own show -- Michael Badalucco's role during the early days of the Squinterns comes to mind. Perhaps creator Hart Hanson and his team of writers never found the right angle to promote these folks to their own series.

I once saw Kiefer Sutherland at Old Town Bar in New York City. He was wearing purple snakeskin boots. They were dangling from his feet and skimming the floor as he was shouting unintelligibly at two friends who were filling in for his lack of motor skills. Dude was wasted, but even in that state I imagine he could’ve MacGuyvered some kick ass if anyone on the terrorist watch list walked through the door. Maybe it’s because I can’t disassociate him from Jack Bauer, but when you see Sutherland you notice he’s oozing with a kind of rockstar swagger you don’t want to mess with. That’s why I’m looking forward to The Confession. In the ten-episode web series, Sutherland plays a God-fearing Roman Catholic hitman with a conscious. He’s accompanied by two-time Academy Award nominee, John Hurt, Michael Badalucco, and Sebastian Becaon.

The series will also star two-time Academy Award nominee, John Hurt, Michael Badalucco, and Sebastian Beacon. The show consists of ten episodes broadcast over Hulu and is distributed by the Digital Broadcasting Group, distributors of 2010’s Control TV. Other executive producers include Chris Young and Joseph Gomes of Dbg and Maura Mandt of Maggie Vision. The Confession begins on Christmas Eve, with a hit man (Sutherland) visits a priest (Hurt) for to confess his sins. Throughout the series, viewers will be taken on a journey of flashbacks revealing what has brought the hit man to this place and revealing both characters to be complex and multi-layered. The dramatic ending culminates with a dramatic climax where the man,...

Kyle MacLachlan, late of "Desperate Housewives," will guest on at least two episodes of "How I Met Your Mother" later this fall. He'll be playing the ex-husband of Jennifer Morrison's character, who maybe-possibly-you-never-know could turn out to be the mom in question. [EW]

Do you remember watching Face/Off and thinking, “If this movie didn’t have any slow-motion, it would be ten minutes long.” You get a similar, and far more aggravating, stretched-out feeling from Mafia II. The gangster video game is set in a lavishly designed postwar metropolis called Empire Bay: Think downtown Manhattan with San Francisco’s freeways, plus Chicago’s El Train and Vice City’s traffic laws.
There’s an impressive attention to period detail. Clothes, cars, buildings, mid-Atlantic accents…they’re all here, and you’ll enjoy them all from the comfort your car, as you drive...

Charles Arthur 'Pretty Boy' Floyd hasn't been portrayed in as many movies as some of the most famous real-life gangsters -- he's no Capone -- but he's certainly had his share of turns on the screen. Channing Tatum played him in Public Enemies; Martin Sheen played him on TV; Steve Kanaly played him in Dillinger. (That wasn't him in O Brother, Where Art Thou?, though -- Michael Badalucco played a version of Lester 'Baby Face' Nelson.) Now Wayne Kramer (Running Scared) is looking to direct Pretty Boy Floyd, where the bank robber will get to take center stage for the first time in many years. THR says that Kramer has signed on to the film that Myriad Pictures is making with Kirk D'Amico producing. The film is written by Kevin Bernhardt based on the life of Floyd. Kramer told the trade, My approach is to bring 21st century style and...

Writer/Director: Allen Wolf
Cast: Philip Winchester, Lacey Chabert, Abigail Spencer, Kelly Overton, Michael Badalucco, Beth Grant, Tony Hale
Studio: Morning Star Pictures
An Abercrombie and Fitch model wakes up alone in a cemetery without any memory of how he got there. Sadly, he wakes up in strange places a lot, thanks to a bad case of parasomnia which leads to his sleepwalking and doing other things he isn’t aware of. Could one of them be murder? It certainly might be when he finds that the wife of his Bff has been stabbed to death and he awoke covered in blood with a knife to go along with it. I do give writer/director Allen Wolf credit as he tries to make this feature a mystery along the lines of Hitchcock, but really, it falls much closer to an episode of Gossip Girl or Melrose Place. Among the scripts that made the Black List, Michael R. Perry's Voices was one I got my paws on and enjoyed immensely. In it, the lead, Jerry Hickfang, kills a woman. Okay, simple enough. But soon, he's starting to listen to his cat and dog, Mr. Whiskers and Bosco, who offer advice on how to cover his tracks. Imagine that scene from Spike Lee's Summer of Son when Michael Badalucco's dog starts talking to him. Except on a larger scale. Vertigo Films is producing and the fellas at /Film have been tipped off that Ben Stiller is their top contender for Hickfang. Mark Romanek, the dude that walked off The Wolfman , is in line to direct. We'll keep you posted if Stiller becomes locked in!

In the early 80’s NYC cultural lull between Patti Smith’s retirement and Jay McInerney’s breakout, Nyu film school graduate Susan Seidelman did the scrappy shoestring indie film thing, resulting in her acclaimed feature debut Smithereens (1982).
Best known for her hit sophomore effort, Desperately Seeking Susan (1985), Seidelman continues to direct movies and TV shows featuring female protagonists… including the pilot for “Sex and the City” and her Oscar nominated short film The Dutch Master (1994), about a shy dental technician who ventures “into” a museum painting for flights of erotic fantasy.

Jean Reno and Natalie Portman in The Professional
Photo: Columbia Pictures Is Luc Besson an overrated filmmaker? I think he's a fine director but reviewing his resume he's usually a pretty average writer and his movies are kind of hit-or-miss. But every once in while he sneaks in an effort that surprises you, makes you take a step back and think, Whoa, where'd that come from? My most recent such reaction came while watching his last directorial effort, Angel-a, a sweet and moving love story dropped into a hotzone trifecta of mediocrity including The Fifth Element, The Messenger and Arthur and the Invisibles. To that point, outside of Angel-a he hasn't made a substantial contribution to the medium since Leon - The Professional, a contribution certainly worth celebrating, and will be done so over the next ten paragraphs.
I didn't see The Professional in the movie theater. I watched it on VHS.

Lara Flynn Boyle and Dylan McDermott's removal from TV show The Practice came as a complete shock to the cast and crew - because they were only expecting pay cuts. The screen stars are two of five regulars on the legal drama who were axed from the show last week by producer David E. Kelley after a season of declining ratings. And axed cast member Lisa Gay Hamilton, who was the first to get the bad news from Kelley, says McDermott and Flynn Boyle were totally unaware of their upcoming dismissals. She recalls, "David called all of us individually and spoke with us. When I heard it was David on the phone, rather than say hello to him I said, 'You're firing me, aren't you?' Why was David calling me - was it to come over for dinner? He paused and then I really knew. He said, 'Well, I don't like to use those words, exactly.'" She adds of McDermott, "Like everyone else, he was hurt by it, because it was so unexpected. He didn't have a clue and none of us had a clue." Camryn Manheim, Michael Badalucco and Steve Harris are among those who remain with the show - which didn't make the last day of work with the full cast comfortable, says Hamilton. She adds, "Michael, Steve and Camryn felt terrible - it's awkward, terribly awkward. Once the day had ended and we all knew we were pretty devastated."...

Andie MacDowell and Teri Polo are set to do guest shots on ABC's legal drama The Practice. In a rare TV series appearance, MacDowell will do one episode, playing a woman hired by Jimmy Berluti (Michael Badalucco) to represent her in a delicate negotiation. The segment also will feature Polo and CBS president and CEO Leslie Moonves. Polo will do to at least three episodes of the 20th Century Fox TV/David E. Kelley Prods. series, playing a love interest to series star Dylan McDermott. She is stepping in for Bridget Fonda, who was originally slated to do the arc but had to pull out after being injured in a car accident last week. Polo will play a U.S. attorney in Washington who returns to her native Boston, where she bumps into old flame Bobby Donnell (McDermott). As the two rekindle their old feelings, the fling puts a strain on Donnell's marriage. ICM-repped MacDowell has starred in such movies as sex, lies, and videotape, Groundhog Day and Four Weddings and a Funeral. Last year, she toplined CBS' drama pilot Jo. Polo was recently cast in the untitled Henchy/Pennette romantic comedy pilot for ABC. The actress is set to reprise her starring role opposite Ben Stiller in Meet the Fockers, the sequel to Meet the Parents. She is repped by UTA and Bob McGowan of McGowan Management.
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- "The Deli", which serves up a thick and not particularly appetizing slice of New York life, is the kind of laid-back comedy that will leaves audiences hungry for more.
Presenting a colorful cast of New York actors in the ramshackle tale of a delicatessen owner struggling to pay his gambling debts while dealing with myriad eccentric friends, relatives and customers, its minor charms won't get it much attention in a commercial environment. Inexplicably given a recommendation by the National Board of Review, it was showcased recently at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival.
John Gallagher's feature does give a welcome opportunity for heavy-set chararcter actor Mike Starr to shine in a starring role. He plays Johnny Amico, a deli owner whose gambling habit has put him in jeopardy with the neighborhood mobsters. To make things worse, his mother's number has just come in, but Johnny, although he's taken her money, hasn't placed a bet on it in years.
A lot of familiar faces pass through the deli, including Iceas a meat delivery man; Chris Noth as a trash man; David Johanson as a rambunctious cabbie; and the model Iman (which could account for the inclusion of some David Bowie songs on the soundtrack) as a woman searching for an avocado, etc.
Also showing up in tiny roles are figures such as veteran rapper Heavy D, Heather Matarazzo ("Welcome to the Dollhouse"), Michael Imperioli, Debi Mazar, William McNamara, Jerry Stiller, Shirley Stoler and Burt Young as the neighborhood gangster. Clearly, the filmmakers were able to call in some debts of their own.
Gallagher and John Dorian's anecdotal screenplay is short on true wit or resonance and doesn't add up to very much, but it does offer the opportunity for the colorful cast to provide some amusing moments, and the film manages to present a vivid and authentic depiction of an Italian working-class neighborhood.
Further adding to the atmosphere is the canny use of music from Rome-based CAM Original Soundtracks, including classic themes from composers such as Nino Rota and Ennio Morricone.
