It’s fitting that British filmmaker Charlotte Regan’s first feature — the charming Sundance winner “Scrapper” — follows a precocious 12-year-old who is startlingly adept at taking care of herself, because Regan’s got a bit of that in her, too. The London native’s childhood wasn’t exactly like that of “Scrapper” lead Georgie (played by newcomer Lola Campbell), who fends for herself after the passing of her mother, a dreamy if fragile existence punctuated by the arrival of her immature dad Jason (Harris Dickinson), but there was certainly a bit of Georgie’s spirit in those early years.
Consider Regan’s early cinema-going memories. During a recent interview with IndieWire, Regan was asked about her experiences seeing films as a kid. What did she remember? “I was too young for sure, but my nan snuck me into ‘Lord of the Rings,’ because the cinema we went to, you could...

“Blue Jean” director Georgia Oakley has signed with CAA.
The up-and-coming British filmmaker made her debut feature with the Venice-premiering “Blue Jean,” which bowed to wide acclaim on the Lido in September. Set in northeast England in the 1980s, the pic is centred on a closeted gym teacher (played by Rosy McEwen) who is forced to confront her sexuality after taking a gay student under her wing.
The film tackles the Margaret Thatcher era’s controversial Section 28 law, which prohibited British schools and councils from “promoting the teaching of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship.” The law was passed in 1988 and stayed in place until 2003.
“Blue Jean” went on to win the Venice Film Festival’s Giornate degli Autori People’s Choice Award. The movie was later acquired by Magnolia Pictures for a North American release, which will take place June 9.

So you think it takes a village to raise a child? Well, Georgie (Lola Campbell) would like a word. The 12-year-old protagonist of Charlotte Regan’s lovely British drama “Scrapper” is pretty sure she can raise herself, thanks.
She proves it too, for a while. Though her beloved mum’s recent death has left her reeling, she’s dealing with her grief by taking the only approach possible: shut down practicality. She still runs the house just as her mother did — cleaning, getting ready for school, and paying bills.
Of course, she has to steal and resell bikes with her best friend Ali (Alin Uzun) to pay those bills, and she relies on the disinterest of social services to keep living alone in her small council flat. For the most part, she’s right that very few adults care enough to confirm her safety, but there was one adult who did: her mother,...

In "Peaky Blinders," Cillian Murphy effortlessly leads the crime drama series as Tommy, the Shelby family patriarch and Peaky Blinders boss, while Helen McCrory's character Aunt Polly is the family's pragmatist; she believes in being realistic and is often Tommy's voice of reason. As for the other Shelby brothers, they've dedicated themselves to fulfilling Tommy's dreams for the family and rising to the top. Every character in "Peaky Blinders" is complex, layered and almost always wavering between the good and the bad. They're anti-heroes in their own right. Casting actors for a show where there's no good and bad guy, so to say, is no easy task, and you'd be surprised to learn which character was the toughest to cast.

The film will premiere in Directors’ Fortnight on Sunday July 11.
The cancellation of Cannes 2020 gave UK director Clio Barnard the chance to “finesse” her now 2021 selection Ali & Ava, which premieres in Directors Fortnight on Sunday July 11.
“It’s a very difficult secret to keep for an entire year,” laughed Barnard.
The writer-director used the time to make minor adjustments, principally in sound post-production. “It meant we had more time to perfect it,” she explained.
But the UK lockdown made it difficult for the London-based filmmaker to travel back to Bradford in northern England, where the film is set, to do the additional sound recordings.
