The Story: It is the future (like say – 1989). Robots are now commonplace, being used for everything from manual labor to childcare. But, robots go bad and when they do, the LAPD calls in Sgt. Jack R. Ramsay (Tom Selleck), an expert in so-called “Runaways”. When a madman (Gene Simmons) invents a microchip that turns all robots into runaways, Ramsay, and his new partner (Cynthia Rhodes) must put a stop to his evil plan – the fate of the world just may depend on it! Oh, and also Ramsay is afraid of heights. Trust me, that’s important.
The Players: Starring: Tom Selleck, Cynthia Rhodes, Kirstie Alley, G. W. Bailey and Gene Simmons. Written and directed by Michael Crichton.
The History: While most famous for his novels, Michael Crichton actually had a decent Hollywood career as a director, having a couple of solid hits under his belt by the time 1984 rolled around.

It's easy to forget that "M*A*S*H" was actually a period piece. The acclaimed sitcom was filmed in the '70s and borrowed liberally from compassionate discussions surrounding the Vietnam War, but it took place two decades earlier, in 1950s Korea. Despite anachronistic '70s mustaches, a timeline that reimagined the relatively short Korean War as near-endless, and the occasional not-retro-enough prop, the show still worked hard to bring a fairly accurate vision of the 1950s to life.
Sometimes, that meant referencing movies that were made in the 1930s and '40s, like "The Wizard of Oz" and "The Good Earth." In other instances, though, the series got ahead of itself, name-dropping movies that hadn't been released yet. The show's masterpiece series finale, the feature-length concluding story "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen," apparently almost included a reference that straddled the line between anachronism and timeliness. According to The Hollywood Reporter's 35th-anniversary spotlight on the finale,...

By the late 1970s, "M*A*S*H" wasn't just a hit television series, it was an institution. This was the pre-cable age, when viewers's entertainment choices were mostly limited to whatever was on network television, so something as seemingly innocuous as a sitcom could drive cultural conversations. "I Love Lucy," "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and "All in the Family" achieved such prominence, as did variety shows like "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In" and "Saturday Night Live."
So if you were a celebrity eager to become or remain relevant in the public eye, booking an appearance on one of these series was a capital idea. Failing that, just hanging around the set was a way of feeling like you still had juice. While "M*A*S*H" was one of the highest-rated television shows on the air, it was basically the Studio 54 of soundstages.

Mark Harmon has an impressive resumé spanning decades. The actor is best known for his role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs in the long-running police procedural NCIS. However, before he led the team at NCIS, he played a crucial role that was ahead of its time. Here’s how Mark Harmon’s role in St. Elsewhere was groundbreaking in the ’80s.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Canadian actor George R. Robertson passed away in Toronto on February 3, 2023. He was 89.
Robertson is perhaps best known for playing the role of Chief, then Commissioner Henry Hurst in the first six "Police Academy" movies, released yearly from 1984 to 1989. The "Police Academy" series, while not well-reviewed, were massively successful, providing a generation with a cop-themed, National Lampoon-style snobs-vs.-slobs cinematic bedrock. According to the 2010 book "George Lucas's Blockbusting: A Decade-by-Decade Survey of Timeless Movies Including Untold Secrets of Their Financial and Cultural Success" by Alex Ben Block and Lucy Autrey Wilson, the first "Police Academy" film made nearly 150 million on a 4 million budget.
The premise of the series was simple: due to a shortage of police officers in an unnamed American city, the local police department has been ordered to accept anyone who applies for the job. This leads to a comedy of errors wherein every weirdo,...

George R. Robertson, the Canadian actor who portrayed the police chief and later police commissioner Henry Hurst in the first six Police Academy films, has died. He was 89.
Robertson died Sunday at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, his family announced.
Robertson also showed up in small roles in three films that were nominated for the best picture Oscar — Airport (1970), Norma Rae (1979) and JFK (1991) — and portrayed vice president Dick Cheney in the 2006 ABC miniseries The Path to 9/11.
Robertson appeared as Hurst in 1994 in the first Police Academy movie, directed by Hugh Wilson, and stuck around through Police Academy 6: City Under Siege (1989). His character grows more tolerant of the wacky recruits led by Commandant Lassard (George Gaynes) as the franchise moves along.
The actor did not make the trip to Moscow for the 1994 installment but was on one episode of the 1997-98 Police Academy series at CTV.

John Badham's 1986 comedy "Short Circuit" was a masterwork on cinematic animatronics. The film's main character was a robot, called only Number Five (voiced by Tim Blaney), who was struck by lightning and lost its memory, but somehow gained sentience. Number Five, originally built to be a laser-wielding soldier, idly rolled out of the robotics lab where it was built and into the home of the put-upon suburbanite Stephanie (Ally Sheedy). Stephanie spends the bulk of the film trying to teach Number Five about the fineries of human interaction while providing it with all the raw data she can provide; Number Five can read books in a matter of seconds.
Searching for Number Five is a military jarhead named Capt. Skroeder (G.W. Bailey), and a pair of funny robotics geniuses named Newton and Ben (Steve Guttenberg and Fisher Stevens). Antics ensue on all sides while Number Five itself slowly comes...

They’ve compared it to that other prized hour of TV drama, Hill Street Blues. And well they should. Both come from Mtm Enterprises, and both have a similar type of stark realism base which at once repels and attracts — like much of reality. Major Crimes will continue to be TNT's longest-running drama.
It was just renewed for a sixth season by the network.
The successful series predates current network head Kevin Reilly and a time when the net focused on procedural fare.
While the focus may be changing at the network, there's no denying the focus of TNT's audience.
This past summer, Major Crimes reached an average of 10 million viewers per episode across TNT's multiple platforms and finished the third quarter ranking as one of cable's Top 10 dramas with adults 18-49.
Initially launched as a follow-up to TNT's long-running hit The Closer, Major Crimes quickly established itself as a must-see drama in its own right.
In its first season, it ranked as cable's #1 new drama of 2012, and it has remained among the most-watched dramas on cable ever since.
Major Crimes centers on a special squad within the Lapd that deals with high-profile or particularly sensitive crimes.

Is Major Crimes‘ Detective Lieutenant Louie Provenza prepared to hang up his shield?
RelatedThe Last Ship Renewed for Season 4 at TNT
That question is on at least one person’s lips in this sneak from tonight’s episode (airing at 10/9c on TNT), after Provenza (played by G.W. Bailey) gets some very unexpected (and to hear him tell it, incomprehensible) but good news. Considering that everyone else from his police academy class has been retired since Season 2 (!), is it time for the final hold-out to call it a day? Press play above for his thoughts on the matter.

What was allowed in 1986 is cringeworthy today
Two movies I loved as a child celebrated their 30th anniversaries recently, and when I looked back upon them nostalgically, as one does, I saw products of their time that mostly hold up — save for one horribly dated, unforgivable element each. The kind of offense that makes it hard to still appreciate the movie when that one inexcusable part dominates your mind.
Both “Crocodile” Dundee and Short Circuit have decent scripts. The former was even nominated for an Oscar. The latter remains quotable. Their main characters are major figures of 1980s pop culture. Not on the level of Arnold Schwarzenegger and E.T., but higher up than Yakov Smirnoff and The Noid. But I can no longer enjoy these movies. Not as they are, anyway.
Their respective crimes are things that shouldn’t have even been tolerated at the time. In Dundee it’s a scene where Paul Hogan’s titular...

Better Call Saul got a blast from the past (or technically from the future?) in Monday's episode of the Breaking Bad spinoff. Mike (Jonathan Banks) was tasked with helping Nacho (Michael Mando) get rid of a problem he can't solve. And that problem is one very scary man in the Albuquerque drug scene, whom Nacho wants Mike to kill. Warning: Spoilers ahead for Monday's Better Call Saul. Tuco (Raymond Cruz) made his return to the series, with Mike opting not to kill the drug kingpin, but instead orchestrating his arrest by tricking Tuco into beating him in front of some cops.

The third season release of Major Crimes is hitting May 26th, and I’ve got your opportunity to win one of three copies of the DVD!
The show, a spin-off of The Closer, has been doing well since it premiered, and the third season was the #3 scripted drama on basic cable.
Moreover, despite not kicking off all that well, it’s a show that has grown into itself, and found a more solid base of existence. The quality has grown in many respects, and the cases were far more interesting in the third season.
Mary McDonnell seems more comfortable, due in large part to the writing giving her a broader base of character to work with.
If you aren’t caught up, now is the perfect chance to get ready for the fourth season.
Take a look at more info on the season, and enter to win your copy!

• Robert De Niro is in talks for Joy. If the deal closes, De Niro would re-team him with actress Jennifer Lawrence and director David O. Russell, whom he worked with on Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle. The film tells the story of inventor of the Miracle Mop, Joy Mangano, whom Lawrence would play. **Warning, this post contains moderate spoilers for tonight’s episode of Major Crimes.**
Graham Patrick Martin as Rusty Beck on TNT’s Major Crimes
Procedural crime dramas aren’t typically the venue for three dimensional gay characters and nuanced coming out stories. The popular TV genre tends to focus more on the case of the week than character, but this season TNT’s Major Crimes is finding a healthy balance between the two.
The spin-off of The Closer is currently in its second season with high ratings and a weekly plethora of whodunit criminal cases dissected (and solved) by Captain Sharon Raydor (Mary McDonnell) and her team, comprised primarily of characters carried over from The Closer like Detectives Provenza (G. W. Bailey) and Flynn (Tony Denison).
And then there’s Rusty.

To track Tom Berenger's history with series television, you have to go back to the early years of "One Life to Live."
Another promising young actor named Tommy Lee Jones was on the then-abc daytime serial during that period in the 1970s, but except for the occasional guest stint or miniseries - such as "Flesh & Blood" later that decade, or last fall's History hit "Hatfields & McCoys," which earned him an Emmy Award -- Berenger largely has kept his work focused on movies, including the classics "The Big Chill" and "Platoon" and the popular comedy "Major League."
However, one weekly TV role has lured him back, at least for a while.

Major Crimes is a spin-off of The Closer, which starred Kyra Sedgwick as the strangely amusing yet efficacious and insidious Brenda Johnson, but in the first season the new series breaks ground and moves out from under Brenda.s shadow thanks to its incredible ensemble cast of characters. Still smarting from Brenda.s less than graceful departure, the Major Crimes team is now run by Lt. Provenza (the incredible G. W. Very few shows make it to their seventh season and even fewer manage to successfully spinoff into a new show sustaining their original premise and audience. But TNT’s hot series The Closer morphed into the new series Major Crimes, taking a majority of its core cast with it. One of the lucky cast members who made the transition along with it was star Phillip P. Keene who portrays the show’s Civilian Surveillance Coordinator Buzz Watson. Return of the Living Dead, the Basket Case Trilogy… Second Sight now continue their current (and fantastic) trend of re-releasing 80s classics on Blu-ray with two family favourites – Short Circuit and Flight of the Navigator – that are, in my humble opinion, essential purchases for 80s movie fans. Even if you already own the DVDs!

You know what's "Out of Bounds?" Keeping Taylor on Major Crimes.
This week we not only had to suffer through his presence, but his imprint was all over the case of the week. He chose to make the case a major crime strictly because his son attended the high school of the victim.
Immediately turning into parent of the year and taking what looked to be a regular road rage case, he turned up the heat between the "blacks and the browns." That was the very thing he was trying to avoid, but he didn't have a problem stirring the pot. Yes, the crime was more than regular road rage, but does anyone doubt our crack squad would have figured that out without all the unnecessary gang play?
I don't. Not for a minute.
