The case for Sherri Shepherd as TV mom of the year is here. With her upcoming appearance in Season 2 of “Harlem,” she adds a new onscreen daughter under her wing — and they’ve got a matching look that screams family ties.
As a fan of Tracy Oliver’s series on Amazon Prime, the talk show host was more than excited to do a guest spot, but what sealed the deal was her character. Shepherd, already known for her enthusiastic persona, portrays Angie’s (Shoniqua Shandai) equally loud, proud and take-charge mother, Sonia, in Episode 3 titled, “An Assist from the Sidelines.”
In an exclusive clip, Shepherd is seen sharing a touching heart-to-heart moment with Shandai as she reminds her to pick herself up when life knocks her down.
Perhaps Shepherd embodied the role all too well as she says the mother-daughter feeling between Shandai and herself took on a life offscreen.

Some of my favorite episodes of TV in recent years have come from the previous two installments of Nickelodeon's Are You Afraid of the Dark? revival, Carnival of Doom and Curse of the Shadows, so I can't wait to see what spooky surprises are in store for Midnight Society members both old and new in the latest season, Ghost Island. The leaders of Women in Film knew they had to do something different with its annual fundraiser in 2020. But they had no idea their brainstorming would lead to the organization’s first TV special, “Women in Film Presents: Make It Work,” which airs Wednesday on the CW.
“We’ve been looking at our annual gala as a fundraiser for a couple of years in terms of how to pivot to something slightly different or more evolved,” Amy Baer, Women in Film board president, tells Variety. “It just felt like the format was getting tired. Women in Film Los Angeles launched the Hire Her Back Initiative on Wednesday. The initiative advocates the rehiring of women and people of color at the same rate and frequency as men as the entertainment industry looks to return from the coronavirus.
The campaign notes Covid-19 has had a disproportionate effect on women and people of color, citing higher unemployment rates for women than men in the month of May and historical data that shows women and people of color are not hired back into jobs at the same rate as men following an economic downturn.
Hire Her Back is a multimedia campaign that will lean on women in the screen industries to urge employers to adhere to equality in hiring as the industry moves toward the return of film and TV production. And Wif will also partner with New York Women in Film & Television (Nywift) and Women In...

Why so serious? While some filmmakers get their start making cheaply made B-movies or horror films, there’s a new crop of directors emerging who previously cut their teeth making classic comedies. And while most haven’t abandoned their sense of humor entirely, they’ve finally been recognized at both the box office and awards circuit by veering into prestige pictures. The latest example is Todd Phillips, the director of “Joker,” which as the darkly disturbed origin story of the iconic Batman villain is no laughing matter. Here are some other directors who have re-emerged as more than just funny men.

Update: Moviegoer interest in seeing Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood apparently wasn’t just among the public, who crowded theaters to bring in an impressive $40 million-plus weekend estimated box office haul and sold out shows in major markets, especially L.A. Oscar voters jumped on board, too.
There was a turnaway crowd Saturday night at the Motion Picture Academy’s 1010 seat Samuel Goldwyn Theatre, with at least 75 people turned away, “maybe more,” according to one observer, for the Academy’s official membership screening. In other words, interest in seeing this was extremely high, and the place was packed with the people who work in the industry in which its story is set. The Academy plans to add an additional...

The year reaches the halfway mark on June 30, and traditionally films from the first six months have an uphill battle in the Oscar race. However, this year’s January-June crop might get a boost from the accelerated schedule: Nominations voting is a tight Jan. 2-Jan. 7, 2020. So if voters start their homework now, early films will have a leg-up over hopefuls that might get lost in the fourth-quarter glut.
So far, the festivals have offered strong possibilities, including Sundance’s “The Report”; and several from Cannes, including “Pain and Glory” from Pedro Almodovar; “Parasite,” from Bong Joon-ho; and “Rocketman.”

The wave of industrywide layoffs has reached CBS Corp.
Employees of CBS Entertainment and CBS Paramount Network TV were let go Monday at the company's Studio City and Television City lots.
The cuts claimed two high-profile CBS Par TV executives: executive vp Maria Crenna, who served as the studio's No. 2 executive under president David Stapf, and senior vp and head of comedy Brian Banks. Both are 11-year CBS veterans.
Also gone at CBS Par is vp current programming Jocelyn Freid.
