Apparently concert documentaries are having a bit of a moment. Between the recent release of the Criterion Collection DVD and Blu-ray of Murray Lerner’s Festival and the theatrical run of films like May It Last, the last month or so has seen a number of concert documentaries thrust back into the spotlight. Hell, even the rarely seen Prince documentary Sign O’ The Times recently got a new lease on life thanks to a streaming debut thanks to Showtime. All of this is to say that fans of music-centric documentaries are in the middle of a brief golden age.
The latest addition to this list of documentaries chronicling a band, a performance or a series of performances is Let’s Play Two: Pearl Jam Live At Wrigley Field. As the title would have you believe, the film shines a light on two vastly different worlds, rock music and professional baseball.

Donald Trump's camp argued that he "demonstrated restraint" during the first presidential debate on Monday night - but the Gop nominee came out swinging the following day. In a Fox and Friends appearance on Tuesday morning, Trump doubled down on his criticism of former Miss Universe Alicia Machado's weight after Hillary Clinton derided his past comments as an example of his disrespect towards women. "She was the winner, and she gained a massive amount of weight, and it was a real problem," Trump said of Machado on Tuesday. "Hillary went back into the years and she found this...

Whenever some sports superstar gets caught doing something untoward, the media wrings its hands and repeatedly shouts “What type of role model is this? Think of the children! Think of the children!” Invariably, the sports superstar in question points out he’s not a role model, he’s a ball player, or whatever. Usually he’s not very far north of childhood himself.
Yet, almost by definition sports superstars are super-heroes. They are imbued “with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men.” Michael Jordan, Bobby Hull, Muhammad Ali, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Willie Shoemaker, Chris Evert… these folks aren’t simply super-heroes, they’re magicians.
When I was at the optimum time to adopt a personal hero, I chose Ernie Banks. Shortstop and later first-baseman for my Chicago Cubs, he joined the team after a stint in the armed forces and the Negro Leagues. He spent 19 seasons with the Cubs,...

During the wait, which started just before 9 p.m., concert-goer and freelance photographer Dwane Lindsey of suburban Arlington Heights snapped this gem from the 200-level seats:

Lindsey later told HuffPost Chicago via email that Pearl Jam played "Elderly Women Behind the Counter In a Small Town" before announcing the hour-long break to let the storm pass.
"The stadium lights came on and the people on the field started to file out for safety," Lindsey wrote, noting he's long loved weather photos but normally shoots "sports and wildlife" professionally.

Nick Offerman is a man of many talents. He can literally build boats with his bare hands and he can probably whittle a decent depiction of Ernie Banks in the time it takes you to read this post. But he cannot, for the love of Harry Caray, sing a lick. At least that’s the premise of the latest New Era Rivals ad that pits his Cub-loving fan against Craig Robinson’s South Side rooter. Offerman’s attempt at singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” would give Simon Cowell a seizure. As Robinson says, “You sound like a donkey being touched inappropriately.

Santa Monica, Calif. — A hungry Chris O'Donnell arrived straight from the set of "NCIS: Los Angeles" and polished off a piece of pizza. Joe Mantegna, Dennis Farina and Roger Ebert's wife were craving their favorite Chicago foods, too.
Chicago Cubs owner Tom Ricketts felt right at home, with "Mr. Cub" Ernie Banks resting on a stool and Harry Carey's widow Dutchie standing at the bar.
There was a Midwest feeling in the air Monday night, even if everyone was almost 2,000 miles from the Second City. It was the 25th Windy City West bash, bringing together expatriate Chicagoans from film, television and sports for a taste of home on the West Coast.
"It's unlike any other Hollywood party. People are actually looking each other in the eye and talking," said O'Donnell, who grew up in the Chicago suburb of Winnetka. "There's nobody looking over anyone's shoulder. That's the difference.

It’s spring training for baseball, a time when even Cubs fans can be hopeful despite knowing that, sooner or later, this year’s team will break our hearts as every Cubs team has done for over a century. Truth is, if the Cubs ever won the World Series, their mystique would be gone. Their legend is based on being losers.
As baseball season is upon us, and tonight is the Academy Awards, I want to look back not only at the game but at my favorite baseball movies. For my taste, there is something better about baseball films than there is in films for any other sport. There’s a duality to it; baseball is played by teams but it comes down to individuals – batter versus pitcher.

Hollywoodnews.com: Who ya’ gonna call? Well, if Dan Aykroyd has his way, you’ll be calling the Ghostbusters one more time.
Speaking today on Dennis Miller Radio, the comedian and founding member of the Ghostbusters (as well as a part of its sequel) confirmed that a third installment in the beloved film franchise will happen, and may even begin shooting in the spring.
Aykroyd confirmed a rumored plot that the original Ghostbusters – Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Banks and Bill Murray – would pass the torch to a younger generation, specifically three guys and a young woman. When pressed, Akyroyd said he liked Matthew Gray Gubler of the TV show “Criminal Minds,” but they’ll look at everybody.
Aykroyd also said “hopefully with Mr. Murray” when asked if Bill would return, backtracking a bit by saying the idea of the franchise is bigger than any one actor.

As long as the Chicago Cubs are baseball's perennial losers, people will remember Steve Bartman and what he did on October 13, 2003. And that picture above is just how they'll remember him: Cubs hat, black sweatshirt, dorky green turtleneck, even dorkier headphones so he could listen to the game on the radio. How could they remember him any other way? After the fateful night when he got between Cubs left fielder Moises Alou and a catchable foul ball and set off a chain of events that led to the Cubs' implosion in the National League Championship Series and made him the target of an entire city's hatred, Bartman dropped off the face of the Earth. A lifelong, die-hard Cubs fan, Bartman issued an apology to Alou, the Cubs, and even old players like Ron Santo and Ernie Banks, then never spoke publicly about the incident again. A reminder for B… As part of MoMA’s Charles Burnett retrospective that began last week, today, at 4:30Pm titled Charles Burnett: The Power To Endure, you can watch a program of short films by Charles Burnett when they screen tonight at MoMA – films that I doubt most of us have seen! These are films he made between 1969 and 2007, since his student days through the recent past. So, consider it a treat!
Titles, years and running times include: Several Friends, 1969, 21 min; The Horse, 1973, 14 min; When It Rains, 1995. 13 min; Olivia’s Story, 2000. 14 min; and Quiet As Kept, 2007. 6 min.
That should be interesting viewing, and I’m looking forward it!
And keep in mind that the retrospective runs through April 25th, with practically Burnett’s entire oeuvre in the lineup of films to screen, although a week into the series, several have already been shown. However, there will be some repeats; for example,...

Damn! I totally effed up and scheduled our podcast season debut tonight, completely forgetting that the MoMA Charles Burnett retrospective also begins tonight! And with his masterpiece too, Killer Of Sheep, which I Still haven’t seen on the big screen, and really want to. I have the recently released DVD issue, but, I think this is a film I’d really love to see in a theater, in all its gritty black and white glory.
Anyway… I already alerted you to this about 2 or 3 weeks ago, so consider this a reminder! MoMA sent out the below press release which details the entire retrospective.
But I’ll break it down for you:
What is it? Charles Burnett is being feted at MoMA (the Museum of Modern Art, here in New York City) with a series titled Charles Burnett: The Power To Endure.
When is it? April 6-25, 2011.

It was the opening day of the Disney-mgm studios in Orlando. The stars were there with their children. There was an official luncheon at the Brown Derby, modeled after the legendary Hollywood eatery. I was beside myself. I was in a booth sitting next to Jack Brickhouse, the voice of the Chicago Cubs. A man walked over and introduced himself. "Bob Elliott." Oh. My. God. Bob, of Bob and Ray.
For me he was the biggest star in the room. Who, after all, compared to even one half of Bob and Ray, was Tom Hanks? Whoopi Goldberg? Art Linkletter? "Gosh all whillikers, Mr. Science!" I said, "What's that long brown object???" Bob didn't miss a beat: "That's known as a board, Roger."
Another man was steaming toward us through the throng. A middle-aged man, well-dressed, tanned, with a pleasant smile. "Hi, Jack!" he said. "Say, I hear Ernie Banks is invited.

2008? Worst. Year. Ever. At least for Berkshire, the $113 billion holding company. That won't stop some 30,000 shareholders from trekking to Nebraska for its annual meeting.
