Producers of the 73rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony honored almost all of the expected people who died this past year. Who was not featured during the emotional In Memoriam segment Sunday night on CBS? Prominent performers and character actors such as Frank Bonner, Sean Connery, Michael Constantine, Abby Dalton, James Hampton, Bruce Kirby, Norman Lloyd, Helen Reddy and Jane Withers were not part of the 49 people included.
While over 100 celebrated television people died since last year’s event in mid-September of 2020, the segment generally only makes room for less than 50. Among those featured Sunday night: TV Academy Hall of Fame members actor Ed Asner, production designer Roy Christopher, actress Cloris Leachman, writer/producer William Link and actress Cicely Tyson. Current nominee Michael K. Williams (“Lovecraft Country”) and “Saturday Night Live” veteran Norm Macdonald sadly passed away this month as well.

Dana Baratta, known for her work writing and co-executive producing “Marvel’s Jessica Jones,” “Good Behavior” and “Private Practice,” died on Sunday at age 59 due to complications from ovarian cancer.
Known as a consummate storyteller, Baratta’s other credits as a writer and producer for TV and film include “Dawson’s Creek,” “Providence,” and the 1994 feature “Andre the Seal.”
Baratta’s family announced her passing on Tuesday, adding that a common refrain among the scribe’s friends was “If it wasn’t for Dana, I wouldn’t have my career,” “I wouldn’t have met my wife,” or “I wouldn’t have met my husband.” Baratta had battled ovarian cancer for years, and credited her extended survival to the care and treatment she received from UCLA Medical Center surgeon and researcher Dr. Beth Y. Karlan.
Baratta is survived by husband David Smith, stepsons Michael Smith and Mathew Smith and Mathew’s wife Jen.

Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock learned their mystic practice from The Rules of Magic.
Being normal is not necessarily a virtue. It rather denotes a lack of courage. Not at HBO Max, however. The not-yet-launched streaming service is making its own laws. The streamer will produce a series adaptation of Alice Hoffman’s novel The Rules of Magic, which is a prequel to Practical Magic, according to Variety. The 1998 film starred Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as sorceress sisters on different paths. It was directed by Griffin Dunne.
HBO Max ordered a pilot for a one-hour show called which will center on siblings Jet, Franny, and Vincent Owens who have been kept isolated because of their abnormalities. They soon learn they are actually descended from a line of witches. The setting of Rules of Magic will move from Massachusetts to 1960s New York City. The sisters inspire fear rather than love.

We've been less than enthusiastic about "The Secret Circle" since its return from holiday hiatus; stilted dialogue and over-the-top performances are overshadowing the proceedings, and they're trying a little too hard to be "dark". But the grownups of Chance Harbor (Henstridge, Harrington, and Howard) look to figure prominently in next week's Episode 1.12, "Witness", so we have high hopes for improvement.

In what should come as no surprise to anyone, The CW has announced a full season order for its rookie series "The Secret Circle". If you're a fan of the show, why not celebrate by watching the just released preview of tomorrow night's Episode 1.05, "Slither", hosted by executive producer Andrew Miller?
Per The CW's president Mark Pedowitz, the order was given to "The Secret Circle" along with two of the network's other freshmen series, "Ringer" and "Hart of Dixie". “We believe in the creative strength of these dramas, and by giving them back-nine orders, we can give our audience the chance to enjoy complete seasons of all three of them,” he said. “With compelling storylines, engaging characters, and tremendous buzz, we firmly believe that Hart of Dixie, Ringer, and The Secret Circle can become signature series for The CW, the kind of top-notch shows that are synonymous with our brand.
