Bleachers take on the classic show tune “Almost Like Being in Love” for the final track in the Jack Antonoff-curated The New Look soundtrack.
The tenth and season finale episode of the Apple TV+ series — about the career of fashion designer Christian Dior and his clashes with Coco Chanel amid the backdrop of Nazi-occupied Paris — hit the streaming service Wednesday, and with it Antonoff and Bleachers’ ghostly rendition of the show tune that, after featuring in the 1947 musical Brigadoon, was popularized by artists like Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole,...

After a few years in limbo, the BAFTAs finally found a host to replace the much-missed Stephen Fry in David Tennant. The Doctor Who actor proved an amiable and funny emcee, although much of his humor would have gone way over the non-Brits in the audience, starting with a lengthy filmed skit riffing on his BBC TV series Staged, co-starring Michael Sheen. (You can watch it above.)
It was a night of surprises, not especially pleasant ones for the teams behind Barbie and Killers of the Flower Moon, and there were no egregious upsets. Neither were there any of the usual technical nightmares that have plagued the event in the past.
Instead, there were lots of low-key but memorable moments, like Oppenheimer’s Robert Downey Jr., dressed in a gray tail suit to collect his Best Supporting Actor award recalling his life in 30 seconds.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph was similarly charming on accepting her Best Supporting Actress award, swooning over presenter Chiwetel Ejiofor and bringing her Holdovers co-star Paul Giamatti to tears when she told him, “I cry every time I see your name.” Equally emotional were June Givanni, receiving this year’s Outstanding Contribution award; Samantha Morton, whose BFI Fellowship was awarded after filmed testimony from Tom Cruise; and the whole audience, who went wild for Still’s Michael J. Fox who handed out the Best Film award to Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
Wonka star Keegan-Michael Key, presenting, sustained a surprisingly funny attempt to pretend to be British, and, taking the first award of the night for Best Original Screenplay, husband and wife team Justine Triet and Arthur Harari joked that their murderous marital drama Anatomy of a Fall had taken on a life of its own.
All night, speeches were crisp and clean, with only the teams behind The Zone of Interest and 20 Days in Mariupol bringing politics into the conversation, even after Tennant gave the go-ahead by mentioning the recent murder of Alexei Navalny, subject of last year’s Best Documentary winner.
The musical numbers left a lot to be desired. Sophie Ellis-Bextor performed her Saltburn showstopper “Murder on the Dancefloor,” which is more than a few rungs down from Shirley Bassey doing “Diamonds Are Forever” in 2022. Meanwhile, Hannah Waddingham doing a slowed-down version of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” wasn’t quite what the particularly touching obituary sequence was crying out for. By far the worst of all, though, was a comedy routine by Nick Mohammed performing as a sweaty light entertainer called Mr. Swallow. We must never think or speak of it again.

Not long after Ringo Starr joined The Beatles, the band skyrocketed to success. By 1964, they were the biggest band in the world. Starr said that many celebrities and musicians were among their fans. At least one public figure had no interest in the band, though. He shared how the band handled the negative feedback.
Ringo Starr recalled 1 person who disliked The Beatles
By the mid-1960s, The Beatles were the most sought-after band in the world. Even other celebrities wanted to be close to them.
“A lot of established stars loved us; they really did,” Starr said in The Beatles Anthology. “Shirley Bassey was a big star in those days and she was always at the gigs. Alma Cogan was always throwing parties and inviting us.”

Now is your chance to find out how to sing like Julie Garland, deal with being Edina Monsoon’s Pa and play a critically acclaimed chicken
It surprised a lot of people when Bubbles, the dippy personal assistant from Absolutely Fabulous, turned out to have a belter of a singing voice. Jane Horrocks showed off her chops in the 1998 film Little Voice having already conquered the stage with the lead role in The Rise and Fall of Little Voice.
Since then, Horrocks has become part of the fabric of the nation. On the big screen, she’s voiced a knitting-loving chicken in 2000’s Chicken Run and a duck opposite Bill Murray’s Garfield. In the flesh, she appeared in Dexter Fletcher’s Proclaimers jukebox musical Sunshine on Leith, and opposite Rob Brydon in 2018 sports comedy Swimming With Men. Exclusive: The Crown’s Imelda Staunton will lead a revival of the classic Jerry Herman-Michael Stewart Broadway musical Hello, Dolly! into the Andrew Lloyd Webber-owned London Palladium next summer.
Echoing words in composer and lyricist Herman’s titular number, the show’s producer Michael Harrison observed that “it’s so nice to have Imelda back on stage where she belongs.”
Directed by Dominic Cooke, the production — with Staunton playing matchmaker Dolly Levi — will begin performances at the Palladium on July 6 for a strictly limited 10-week season ending September 14.
The Palladium, designed by Frank Matcham, opened on a site close to Oxford Circus in 1910, the year King Edward VII died. It was to become a favorite venue of the Royal Family, often hosting the annual Royal Variety Show in the presence of the late Queen Elizabeth II, great-granddaughter of Edward VII.

In the modern movie world of “franchise” cinema, there’s one thing more difficult than making a sequel: making a sequel to a sequel. Most sequels tend to either try to double down on what made the original so great or, alternatively, attempt to take things in a more expansive new direction. The third film or “threequel” poses something of a unique quandary though. The concept of the “threequel” isn’t a new one, in fact it is almost as old as cinema itself. The very first “threequel” arguably arrived all the way back in 1907 with George Méliès‘ The Haunted Castle, the third in a trilogy of silent films that began with The Kingdom of the Fairies (1903).
However, modern filmmakers face an increasingly tricky task with threequels. Essentially, they either need to find a satisfactory way to wrap up the story or alternatively inject fresh blood into proceedings with a...

No matter your opinion of Paul McCartney, you can’t deny he’s a prolific songwriter. He’s written more than 1,000 songs in his career, though the real total is probably higher. John Lennon admitted he liked only one of Macca’s Beatles pieces, and the bassist could be just as critical of his own work. Paul was harsh on his song “Live and Let Die,” and he was 100% wrong.

After winning the BAFTA supporting actress award last year for West Side Story, Ariana DeBose returned to open the 2023 ceremony on Sunday.
The actress — also known for Hamilton and Westworld — performed an exclusive contemporary song inspired by this year’s nominees on stage at London’s Royal Festival Hall. Richard E. Grant serves as the host of the ceremony.
Alongside DeBose, Mercury Prize-winning artist Little Simz is also set to perform and will sing a track from her album No Thank You. Last year, iconic Welsh singer Dame Shirley Bassey raised the curtain on the 75th edition of the BAFTAs with a rendition of the classic James Bond theme “Diamonds Are Forever” in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the film franchise.

If These Walls Could Sing documents the role in music history of the iconic Abbey Road Studios, its impact on The Beatles and all the legendary music that followed that was born inside those four walls.
Paul McCartney‘s daughter Mary McCartney, who serves as the director on the film, recently sat for a discussion with uInterview founder Erik Meers to reveal the story behind Oasis getting kicked out of Abbey Road Studios.
>Watch Part 1 Of Mary McCartney’s uINTERVIEW!
“Abbey Road’s not the sort of place to ask people to leave,” McCartney said. “They really do work with the artist. They had a lot of paparazzi following them and maybe they were being a little crazy, but then they came back to record their last album there and then Abbey Road sort of made a little chill-out area for them. They were a bit more prepared for them the second time.

If These Walls Could Sing is the long and winding story of Abbey Road Studios. This excellent Disney Original Documentary also happens to be the first film from an acclaimed photographer who knows the studio well: Mary McCartney. Abbey Road has been holy ground for music fans ever since her dad walked barefoot across it with the other Beatles on one of history’s most iconic album covers.
Mary McCartney has known Abbey Road her whole life — the documentary begins with baby photos of her on the studio floor. There...

Angelo Badalamenti, the composer best known for composing the score for the TV series Twin Peaks, has died aged 85.
He died of natural causes on Sunday (11 December), his family said in a statement.
As well as his work on Twin Peaks, Badalamenti composed a number of scores for other David Lynch films, including Blue Velvet (1986) and Mulholland Drive (2001).
He made cameos in both films, starring as the coffee-loving gangster Luigi Castigliane in Mulholland Drive, and playing piano with Isabella Rossellini in Blue Velvet.
In his lifetime, the Brooklyn-born composer worked with musicians such as Nina Simone, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Shirley Bassey, Marianne Faithfull, Liza Minnelli, Pet Shop Boys and LL Cool J.
As a child, Badalamenti grew up listening to Italian opera with his family. He began piano lessons at eight years old and went on to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Manhattan School of Music.

Sad news to report today as acclaimed Twin Peaks composer Angelo Badalamenti has died at the age of 85. The composer was best known for his frequent collaborations with David Lynch. His niece, Frances Badalamenti, told THR that he died on Sunday of natural causes, surrounded by family at his home.
Angelo Badalamenti’s haunting and beautiful theme for Twin Peaks was merely one of his many collaborations with David Lynch. He composed music for Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, Lost Highway, The Straight Story, and Mulholland Drive. He also returned for the Twin Peaks revival series on Showtime. Badalamenti’s work can be heard on A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, The City of Lost Children, Arlington Road, The Beach, Auto Focus, Cabin in the Woods, A Very Long Engagement, Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist, The Wicker Man,...

Angelo Badalamenti, the David Lynch composer whose music for Twin Peaks gave television one of its most haunting and memorable themes, died Sunday at his home in New Jersey. He was 85.
His death was announced by family members.
“Today, no music,” Lynch said, in typical cryptic fashion, on his daily YouTube weather report before discussing the temperature.
Badalamenti, whose other collaborations with Lynch included Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, Wild at Heart, Lost Highway and The Straight Story, also composed for such non-Lynch films as A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, and musical artists from Nina Simone and Shirley Bassey to David Bowie, Paul McCartney and Liza Minnelli.
But it was his Grammy-winning 1990 soundtrack for Twin Peaks, which included the disquieting “Laura Palmer’s Theme,” that placed Badalamenti and his music among the best known of composers and themes in TV history.
This story is developing.

The TV ratings for the Academy Awards may be on a downward trajectory, but that hasn’t stopped the British Academy from taking a leaf out the Oscars’ book in order to boost its own broadcast appeal.
As part of a revitalized format for the BAFTA Film Awards , for the 2023 edition — due to take place on Feb. 19 at the Royal Festival Hall on London’s Southbank Centre, and with a BAFTA CEO in TV veteran Jane Millichip now at the helm — the final four categories of the night will be aired live for the first time in the show’s history.
Channelling the Oscars some more, the ceremony will see music performances feature throughout the night from “music newcomers and legends alike,” according to BAFTA. At the 2022 ceremony, Dame Shirley Bassey kicked off proceedings with a performance inspired by 60 years of James Bond.

BAFTA Unveils Plans For 2023 Film Awards: Final Categories Will Air Live, Two Hosts To Lead Ceremony
The BAFTA Film Awards are being “revitalized” with a new format set for the 2023 ceremony which takes place on February 19. Along with the previously announced new digs at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, the ceremony will for the first time culminate in a live broadcast of the final four categories. In previous years, the event has been pre-recorded and broadcast with a delay.
The production will also be bolstered by two hosts leading the show rather than the usual solo emcee. As-yet unnamed, one will host from the auditorium and one from a new BAFTA Backstage Studio. The latter will offer viewers a 360-degree experience complete with VTs from the red carpet and backstage, alongside talent interviews from past and present winners, nominees and presenters.
Also new this year, music performances will feature throughout the broadcast from newcomers and legends alike. Shirley Bassey brought the house down last year,...

It’s been 60 years since “Dr. No” introduced the most famous fictional spy to movie audiences, opening with a black and white graphic of an eye, inserted with the image of a man turning and pointing a gun – accompanied by one of the most famous instrumentals in cinema history. In the six decades since, there have been 25 Bond films with six different actors portraying the suave spy, as well as 25 accompanying theme songs ripe for debate over which is best.
Monty Norman‘s “James Bond Theme” was so perfect that it has been used in some form in every Bond film since, but each installment also has its own theme, featuring some of the most prolific composers, songwriters and performers of their time. In the 1960s, John Barry took over as composer, eventually working on 11 of the films, and collaborating with a variety of lyricists and artists, ranging from “Oliver!

When Sean Connery returned to the James Bond films after skipping out on "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (which is a great movie but seen as lesser at the time), anticipation was high. In 1971, Connery was Bond. George Lazenby was some pretender. There wasn't a tradition of handing over the character to a new actor yet. This was his grand return, and the film's creatives needed to get it right. They even brought back "Goldfinger" director Guy Hamilton to call the shots.
On a financial level, everyone was happy. "Diamonds Are Forever" was the third-highest grossing film at the domestic box office in 1971. On an artistic level ... it's one of the worst films in the series. Connery is clearly only in it for the paycheck, the story is weirdly low-stakes and silly, and the Las Vegas setting feels chintzy.

The James Bond franchise is the gold standard for long-running film series. Sixty years of 007 have not only come with new takes on the secret agent himself but what the franchise should be for each generation of the character. This has meant consistent alterations to every aspect of the movies, as one star takes over for another, from ditching the overt sexism on Bonds past when Daniel Craig took over the role to embracing the absurd in the early years, namely the later Sean Connery films and the majority of the Roger Moore era.
Even the music has changed with each theatrical adventure. From absolute classics, such as Matt Monro’s “From Russia With Love” and Shirley Bassey’s “Goldfinger,” to more modern hits like Adele’s “Skyfall,” each new Bond song is as big an event as the movie itself. But not all Bond songs are equal, and...

It's difficult to imagine what 007 in the modern age would look like without Daniel Craig, who brought a new and brash energy to a screen presence once defined by the signature martini, his gadgets, and the glide of an Aston Martin. His Bond is the most personal of them all, as we're introduced to a blue-eyed recruit who ultimately becomes a rugged pawn on behalf of Her Majesty's Secret Service. Craig's streak isn't perfect, akin to most Bonds, but not even "Quantum of Solace" or "Spectre" could take away from his very best.
Where "Casino Royale" reinvigorated the contemporary legacy of James Bond, it was "Skyfall" that solidified his place in the 21st century. The combination of director Sam Mendes, cinematographer Roger Deakins, and composer Thomas Newman took what could have been a traditional Bond adventure, and turned it into a deeply personal action epic that ranks among my favorites of the series.

All the way back on Drag Race US season two (which was just over twelve years ago) Ru Paul introduced the first-ever snatch game that saw the queens showcase their best celebrity impressions in a bid to make the queen supreme laugh. Since then this challenge has become a key part of any season of Drag Race and has become a decisive challenge that instantly marks the front runners of every season. It not only takes a talented queen but also a clever choice of character in order for a queen to excel in the snatch game and I for one am not sure that I would struggle under the intense stage lights in this improvised, impersonation challenge! Last week’s episode of Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK saw the return of this iconic challenge with two both Cheddar and Dakota doing surprisingly well (as Queen Elizabeth 1st and...

Sixty years is a long time in the lifespan of a human being. And in the life cycle of a fictional character’s popularity, it’s usually unthinkable: a vast ocean of time which is rarely crossed by products of something as fleeting and fickle as pop culture. Nevertheless, six decades since Sean Connery first donned the tuxedo and uttered the iconic line of “Bond, James Bond,” the 007 character has endured in popularity.
In fact, during the character’s golden jubilee in 2012, Bond became arguably bigger than ever with the 50th anniversary also coinciding with the highest grossing Bond film at the box office, courtesy of Skyfall… of course that record only holds if you don’t count inflation, or certainly the amount of tickets sold by Connery’s fourth outing as MI6’s best man, Thunderball (1965). Either way, even the dour and brooding Craig movies still act as a reflection,...

As a musical theatre fan, last week’s episode of Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK was a dream come true! What started with one of the most accurate yet hilarious Ru-sical performances (that had the queens all singing live) transitioned into a runway that celebrated some of the most iconic shows to ever hit the west end. Review: I think the first time I ever noticed film music was in a James Bond film. My love of the James Bond film series has been well-documented here on JoBlo. After all, Nick Bosworth, our director of YouTube Operations, and I did a whole series about the 007 franchise – James Bond Revisited. But, one of the areas he and I always wanted to explore was the “James Bond sound,” most notably the music and work of John Barry. Indeed, the franchise as it exists today would not have survived were it not for the Barry sound. Everyone credits Monty Norman as the composer of the James Bond theme, and there’s some truth to that. Still, the orchestration by John Barry with the distinctive guitar playing by Vic Flick...

Nothing has illustrated the current turmoil in British politics quite as starkly as the recent tanking of the pound against the dollar, a puzzle even to the ruling party whose prime minister and chancellor caused it. Richard Eyre’s fitfully funny Allelujah reflects this schism in more ways than one, balancing broad grey-pound comedy and seriously macabre drama with the result that a seemingly gentle satire inexplicably dives into a murky existential abyss in its final act. Even fans of Alan Bennett, the famously folksy playwright and national treasure of the north, will struggle with the juxtaposition of wry bathos and savagery, the latter ramped up from Allelujah’s original incarnation as a Bennett stage play sprinkled with Dennis Potter-style song-and-dance numbers.

“Dancing with the Stars” will get shaken, not stirred, when it celebrates Bond Night on Monday’s episode.
To mark the 60th anniversary of the release of the first James Bond film, “Dr. No,” the top 14 will perform to Bond theme songs on Week 3. But you won’t hear one notable tune: Adele‘s “Skyfall” from the 2012 film of the same name and the first Bond theme to win the Best Original Song Oscar. The subsequent two Oscar-winning themes, Sam Smith‘s “Writing on the Wall” from 2015’s “Spectre” and Billie Eilish‘s title track to last year’s “No Time to Die,” will be represented on the show.
And with the moody nature of most of the tracks, you will not be shocked to learn that there will be lots of rumbas — eight of them, to be exact. Definitely a missed opportunity not to make it 007.

Near the beginning of what many consider to be the definitive James Bond movie, 1964’s Goldfinger, Sean Connery’s 007 reveals himself to be simultaneously roguish and antiquated. The moment occurs when his latest conquest affronts his snobbish tastes—dismissing something to do with champagne and refrigerators. He thus believes it’s his duty to explain, “My dear girl, there are some things that just aren’t done, such as drinking Dom Pérignon ’53 above the temperature of 38 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s as bad as listening to the Beatles without earmuffs.”
Bond might’ve been the coolest fictional character around at the time of that movie’s release, but his musical tastes were clearly not. Fortunately for the superspy, his producers at Eon Productions were rarely so old-fashioned.
Over the past 60 years and 25 James Bond pictures, the Bond franchise has become synonymous in its better years with evolving with the times.

It’s fair to say that Abbey Road Studios is the most documented recording facility in the world, but only if you count the crosswalk outside. Otherwise, the nine-bedroom mansion turned studio hasn’t really had its day in the cinematic sun, the way that more modest studios like L.A.’s Sound City and Alabama’s Muscle Shoals have. Making up for that with an A-lister-filled movie treatment is “If These Walls Could Sing,” the first feature-length documentary from Mary McCartney, who has a hell of a shared Rolodex to draw upon in gathering the firsthand rock ‘n’ roll anecdotes you expect and want in a film like this. She’s also savvy enough to know that the guy working in the back gluing irreplaceable mid-century microphones back together deserves a few seconds of screen time, too.

In the last episode of Ru Paul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race, we saw Poppy Love continue her domination of the competition as she claimed her second win in two episodes! I personally, thoroughly enjoyed her performance of “Show Me How to Burlesque” from the iconic movie Burlesque where they showcase their incredible dance-based skills! On the other end of the completion was surprising Thirsty Von Trap and Electra Owl with the latter revealing herself to be the singer-songwriter, Taylor Dayne! In the first episode of this season, I was a bit disappointed in the fact that there was little to no theme that tied together each of the separate performances. There was some improvement last week when the idea of “dance” was used with the queens showing their own dance skills (specifically the aforementioned Poppy Love and Chic-Fi-Lay) but I did think that this theme was extremely...

James Bond is due for quite the celebration when the 60th anniversary of the first 007 film rolls around this fall. Christie’s and Eon Productions are planning a two-part charity auction in September, while the BFI will host an in-conversation series and screenings later in the month. Then, just ahead of James Bond Day in October, Shirley Bassey is to headline a retrospective concert at the Royal Albert Hall.
Titled Sixty Years Of James Bond, the auctions will feature 60 iconic lots celebrating all 25 films in the franchise. The live auction will take place in London on September 28, while an online auction will run from September 15 through James Bond Day on October 5. The headline piece of the live auction is a silver birch Aston Martin DB5 stunt car, one of eight replicas built for last year’s No Time To Die, and estimated to sell for up to £2 million. In total, there...
