London and Rome-based production company Blackbox Multimedia, recently co-founded by former Lionsgate COO Guy Avshalom with Italy’s Guido Brera and Roberta Cardarelli, is developing a slate of high-end skeins for the international market comprising “The Last Cop,” on which they’ve partnered with Keshet International, and also “Murder in Time,” based on a series of thrillers by U.S. writer Julie McElwain.
McElwain’s three “Murder in Time” books, published by Pegasus, revolve around tough FBI agent Kendra Donovan who goes rogue in London in an effort to assassinate the man who killed her team, only to end up in England in the 1800s. Up-and-coming British screenwriter Amanda Duke has written the series bible for this time-travel crime thriller that encapsulates “what Blackbox is trying to do,” says the company’s Head of Development Chiara Cardoso.

Film: "Malavita"; Cast: Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Tommy Lee Jones, Dianna Agron, John D'Leo, Vincent Pastore, Joseph Perrino, Paul Borghese, Jimmy Palumbo and Kresh Navakovic; Director: Luc Besson; Rating: **1/2
Billed as an action comedy and adapted from Tonino Benacquista's novel, director Luc Besson's film suffers from an identity crisis. Released elsewhere as "The Family", here in India, the film is called "Malavita". And if you were to ask, what's in a name? Well...
Well, the film gets its name after the faithful canine, which the family loses in a bloody fight.
But "Malavita" is not the dog's story. Unless it denotes, that every mobster leads a dog's life!
This is the tale of mobster Giovanni.

The Family
Written by Tonino Benacquista, Luc Besson, and Michael Caleo
Directed by Luc Besson
USA/France, 2013
The famed French director Luc Besson hasn’t directed a film with a wide American release since the historic bomb The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc in 1999. In the interim, he has written and produced a number of highly successful films including The Transporter, Taken, and District B13, and he’s directed a few French films that haven’t come across the pond, but The Family is his first attempt at directing an English-language film in almost 15 years. He’s still got it to some degree, for The Family is acceptably entertaining, but it’s not even close to Besson’s biggest hits from the past.
The titular family is the Manzoni organized crime clan, who enter into witness protection and became the Blakes: father Fred (Robert de Niro), mother Maggie...

Box office prognosticators had Insidious Chapter 2 opening to about $20 million this weekend, and boy were they off. The sequel to 2011′s Insidious defied expectations and earned $41 million in it’s opening weekend.
Has Insidious Chapter 3 been announced yet? If not, expect it to come soon, but don’t expect director James Wan to return, as he is moving on to Fast & Furious 7 and has sworn off horror films.
Coming in at number two is The Family, writer/director Luc Besson’s adaptation of Tonino Benacquista’s novel; which managed a respectable $14.5 million. The film stars Robert DeNiro and Michelle Pfeiffer as a mother and father who must move their mob family to France with the help of the Witness Protection Program.
Last weekend’s number one flick Riddick took a large tumble of 63.1% to finish in third with $7 million for a total domestic take of $31.3 million. Internationally Riddick has amassed...

A favorite cable television series in recent years for me has been USA Network's In Plain Sight about U.S. Marshals charged with relocating and protecting federal witnesses. The dramatization of people who must adjust to a new life with a new identity is engaging and thought provoking. How does a person not only leave behind their friends and relations, but also change their occupation or interests to avoid detection?
Based on by French crime fiction author Tonino Benacquista, writer/director Luc Besson's The Family provides darkly humorous insight of a former Mafioso and his family's existence within a federal witness program. When extortion and illegal activities are all you've known for your entire life, it's not easy to adjust to a different lifestyle -- even in the idyllic setting of the French Riviera or the historic and slower-paced Normandy.

Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer and Tommy Lee Jones revisit some blasts from their pasts in "The Family," a violent action comedy about a mob family in France thanks to the witness protection program.
De Niro does a little "Analyze This" as Giovanni Manzoni, who ratted out his mob pals back in Brooklyn and now has a $20 million price on his head. He is, he narrates, "a nice guy" who just has to control "my sadistic urges" better. He's prone to beating people senseless or to death over things like poor service, "disrespect" and the like. And he's in France.
Funny.
Pfeiffer tones down her "Married to the Mob" turn as Maggie, the long-suffering wife, moving to yet another town where these people -- "The Blakes," they're called this time -- need to fit in. But her encounters with rude French salesclerks bring out the practicing pyromaniac in her.

In a shocking turn of events that not even the most studied of film scholars could have predicted, Robert De Niro takes on the role of a mobster in Luc Besson’s new action/comedy, The Family, based on the French novel Malavita (published as Badfellas in North America), by Tonino Benacquista.
De Niro gets comfortable playing Gio Manzoni, a nice blend of every other gangster he’s played in his career, only in this case he’s been exiled to France after ratting out his former cronies. As the movie begins we meet Gio and his family arriving in a new village after fleeing their last witness protection location in fear of being discovered and whacked by a sort of mob hit man/P.I. who’s hot on their trail and eager to get his job done.

It might at first seem lazy to cast Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer in “The Family,” about a mobster, his wife and their kids hiding out in witness protection in France. De Niro, after all, has played countless goodfellas over the years, while Pfeiffer was herself married to the mob in the film of the same name, not to mention “Scarface.” It all seems forgivable, however, since writer-director Luc Besson (who adapted Tonino Benacquista’s novel “Malavita” with co-scenarist Michael Caleo) builds on the stunt casting until it culminates in a colossal inside joke that no doubt tickled both the.

Taunting long-standing stereotypes naturally built into a character archetype that has long brought you success, and has helped build your reputation, can be a risky move for well-established actors. But Academy Award-winning actor Robert De Niro daringly embraced the bold misunderstandings and confrontations with his latest portrayal of an unrelenting Mafia boss and his unsuspecting neighbors in director Luc Besson’s new action crime comedy, The Family. The actor effortlessly ridicules the ease and comfort his character takes in harming those who have wronged him, but also those characters around him who unquestionably take him at his word that he’s an upstanding citizen.

For some reason, Luc Besson’s Malavita has been renamed. The Leon director’s upcoming mafia comedy has now been saddled with the rather dull title The Family. Production company Relativity Media have dropped the first trailer for the film. From Yahoo! Movies you can check it out below.
Robert De Niro treads familiar territory as a mafioso forced to relocate to a quaint French town with his family. Michelle Pfeiffer stands by her man as his wife. Dianna Agron and Joseph Perrino as their kids round out the troubled family brood.
All of the Manzoni family dally with typical mobster activities in this first trailer. It appears to pick up the thread left dangling at the end of Goodfellas. Just what do mobsters in witness protection get up to? A violent fish-out-of-water comedy, De Niro’s clan are kept in line by Tommy Lee Jones as the witness protection officer.

Despite the best efforts of Agent Stansfield (Tommy Lee Jones) to keep them in line, Fred Manzoni (Robert DeNiro), his wife Maggie (Michelle Pfeiffer) and their children Belle (Dianna Agron) and Warren (John D’Leo) can’t help but revert to old habits and blow their cover by handling their problems the “family” way, enabling their former mafia cronies to track them down.
Chaos ensues as old scores are settled in the unlikeliest of settings in this darkly funny film by Luc Besson (Taken, Transporter).

Previously working on the project as a creative consultant, Martin Scorsese has fully come onboard as a hands-on executive producer on the Luc Besson-directed project.
EuropaCorp and Relativity are producing the film in which Robert De Niro plays a retired mob boss who moves to a small town in France's Normandy with his wife (Michelle Pfeiffer) and teenage daughter (Dianna Agron), as part of the witness protection program. They soon get caught up in old habits.
The story was adapted by Besson and Michael Caleo from Tonino Benacquista's novel "Badfellas." The film is set for a release in October.
Meanwhile, "The Place Beyond The Pines" director Derek Cianfrance and star Bradley Cooper are not re-teaming on the "Chef" project which Cooper and "The Intouchables" star Omar Sy are attached to.
Cianfrance tells Premiere: "No, I will not direct this film. But I can say that Omar Sy has a lot of talent.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before – Robert De Niro is going to play a mob boss in a movie. You’re shocked, aren’t you? The star of such mob classics as The Godfather: Part II, The Untouchables, and Goodfellas is now officially signed on for another mob movie – but this one comes with a comedic twist that could suit De Niro’s recent sensibilities (the sort that have steered him to such schlock as Little Fockers). De Niro will lead the cast of Luc Besson‘s Malavita, in which he will play a “notorious” mob boss who, along with his family, is sent to France as part of the witness protection program (France? Really? My Blue Heaven, this is not). Despite their best attempts at a normal life, the family reverts to old habits (or, as the official press release on this project puts it, ” they soon find themselves handling things the ‘family...

Playing Quinn Fabray on Fox's hit musical/high school show "Glee" hasn't given Dianna Agron a lot of chances to break out into movie roles, but it looks like she's signing on to a project that will be a far, far cry from the antics at William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio. Agron has signed up for Luc Besson's "Malavita," which will see the rising actress starring opposite seasoned and legendary veterans like Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer and Tommy Lee Jones. Based on the Tonino Benacquista novel “Badfellas,” the story centers on a long-married couple (De Niro/Pfeiffer) with Mafia ties who are relocated to France through the witness protection program in an effort to hide their past – yet they still find a way to get back into “the business.” Agron will play the daughter of De Niro and Pfeiffer, and that's about all we know. In his own films at least,...

If you've ever watched "Glee" and thought to yourself, "boy, that Dianna Agron would make a really good mobster," well, first of all you're really weird. But secondly, you somehow read Hollywood's mind, because according to The Hollywood Reporter, Agron has just signed on to co-star in the upcoming gangster film "Malavita," which is based on the hit book "Badfellas."
And her dastardly dad will be played by none other than one of the "Goodfellas," Robert De Niro.
Here's the scoop: Adapted from author Tonino Benacquista's popular novel, "Malavita" tells the story of a mafioso (that's De Niro) who moves to France with his wife (Michelle Pfieffer!) and daughter (that's Agron) to get away from the mobsters he ratted out.
But since a leopard can't change his spots, he soon is back to his old ways, which soon draws the attention of the mob right to his little pastoral town.

We’ve given a lot of credit to Tommy Lee Jones recently for his willingness to step out so late in his career and try on different hats, like writing, directing, and starring in the pioneer-era tale “The Homesman,” as well as going a little more comedic (and raunchy) than he’s used to in the Meryl Streep co-starring “Hope Springs.” And now he’s set to star in a dark comedy/action mish-mash for Luc Besson. While other aging talent remains comfortable turning in repetitive or forgetable performances, Jones just keeps on rolling.
Variety has the word that Jones is in final negotiations to play an FBI agent in the film “Malavita,” which already stars Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer as a long-married couple with Mafia ties (surprise!) who are relocated to France through a witness protection program in an effort to hide their past – yet they still...
