Update: Andrew Scott, most recently seen in All Of Us Strangers and Netflix's Ripley, is also now confirmed by Variety as joining the cast.
Just last week, we learned the title of Rian Johnson's latest Knives Out mystery — Wake Up Dead Man. The writer/director didn't share any casting, but word has since arrived (initially via What's On Netflix and since confirmed by the trades) that the first two pieces of the ensemble around returning veteran Daniel Craig have been locked in: Challengers' Josh O'Connor and Priscilla's Cailee Spaeny.
Beyond that, the information is basically nil — we don't know, for example what sort of mystery the drawlin' detective Benoit Blanc (Craig) will be digging into this time, nor do we know exactly where (rumours have pointed to a least shooting in London).
The Knives Out movies have always boasted eclectic ensembles, with Ana de Armas, Chris Evans and...

When Game of Thrones TV series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss set out to craft an epic series called 3 Body Problem, an adaptation of a trilogy of sci-fi novels written by Chinese author Liu Cixin, for the Netflix streaming service, they were hoping to get four seasons out of the material. But when the first season of 3 Body Problem started streaming in March and pulled in a sizeable but underwhelming number of views, some began to question whether or not Netflix would want any more episodes of the big budget show. Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Netflix has indeed ordered more episodes – but just enough to allow Benioff, Weiss, and co-creator Alexander Woo to wrap up the story. Exactly how many episodes that will be has not yet been revealed.

Netflix announced on Wednesday that it had “renewed” “3 Body Problem,” but the streamer notably didn’t refer to the extension as a “Season 2.” Instead, it appears to be more of a case of Netflix ordering “additional episodes” instead of a new, full Season 2 order.
Per a press release, the exact number of seasons and episodes will be announced at a later date.
It appears that the order will take the series to its finale, as creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo noted in a statement that they “get to tell this story through to its epic conclusion.” In an April interview with Collider, Benioff said the team would “need at least three, maybe four seasons to tell the whole story.”

Will Ferrell is making a rare foray into scripted television in a big way.

In his first leading role in a comedy series, Ferrell will star as a fictional golf legend. Details regarding Youssef’s role are under wraps.

It looks like Rian Johnson will be filming Knives Out 3 at the end of the year, with Daniel Craig back as Benoit Blanc.
A week or two back, writer/producer/director Rian Johnson – and his producing partner Ram Bergman – inked a new two-picture deal with Warner Bros. However, as speculated at the time, Warner Bros is going to have to wait its turn in the queue, as Johnson fulfils his commitment to Netflix. The same Netflix that paid for two Knives Out movies.

In what is no surprise, Warner Bros Motion Picture Group is getting into business with its Dune and Wonka star Timothée Chalamet, and has hammered a multi-year first look feature film deal with the Oscar nominee as actor and producer.
Between the Dune movies and Wonka, Chalamet’s recent pics with the Burbank, CA lot have delivered $1.6 billion to studio coffers. Chalamet became the first actor in over four decades to star in the top two domestic-grossing films released in an 8-month period.
The latest talent deal is one of many hammered out by Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group co-Chairs and CEOs, Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, as they set their future slate at the studio. Since being announced for the top studio job at Warner Bros back in June 2022, the duo have made deals with Tom Cruise, Jon M. Chu, and T Street’s Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman.

Timothée Chalamet has proven twice within just the last three months that he is a true movie star. He’s one of the few young actors right now who can open a movie, whether it’s a family-friendly romp like “Wonka” or a sci-fi epic like “Dune: Part Two.”
That both of those were released by Warner Bros. is motivation for the studio to lock his services down as best they can. And so they have.
On Tuesday, WB film group heads Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy announced they’ve signed a multi-year, first-look feature film deal with Chalamet in which he will collaborate with the studio on future projects as both an actor and a producer. No specific projects were announced today.
Chalamet, 28, is still new to the producing game — but no longer a rookie. He produced Luca Guadagnino’s “Bones and All,” which was greenlit by MGM...

Rian Johnson and producer Ram Bergman are the latest to sign up for some of Warner Bros’ cash: more here.
Given Warner Bros Discovery has had its back against the wall for much of the last year or two, it was bound to try something to get out of the pickle it found itself in. In this case, the plan? Spend, and spend on talent.
Warner Bros – outside of Barbie – has become known as the studio that likes to delete completed films, and it ain’t a good look when trying to attract filmmakers. Still, the old-fashioned chequebook still seems to work, and over the past few months, the studio has inked expensive deals with the likes of Margot Robbie, Ryan Coogler and Tom Cruise.
The immediate priority for director Rian Johnson and regular producer Ram Bergman is their third Knives Out film, for which they’re committed to make for Netflix.

Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman’s company T-Street has signed a two-picture producing deal with Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group.
Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, who took over as the studio’s co-chairs and CEOs in 2022, orchestrated the deal. It marks the producers’ first collaboration with Warner Bros., having previously worked with Lionsgate on the box office hit “Knives Out,” Netflix on its sequel “Glass Onion,” Disney on “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and Focus Features on the neo-noir thriller “Brick.” It’s unclear if Johnson will direct either of the two films that he’ll be overseeing at Warner Bros.
“Mike and Pam’s renewed commitment to original storytelling and the theatrical experience make Warner Bros. Discovery an ideal place to help us bring the filmmakers we love to audiences around the world on a grand scale,” said Johnson and Bergman. “We’re thrilled to have them as partners.

The final trailer for Netflix’s 3 Body Problem teases that “they” are coming and reveals the discovery in the ’70s of something called the “Wow” signal. This year’s Film Independent Spirit Awards stayed ahead of the Oscar curve once more, announcing their winners on Sunday, February 25 in the usual chilly white tent on the Santa Monica beach (and on YouTube). With Oscar voting not over until the evening of February 27, the winners at the 39th Spirits could gain valuable Oscar momentum.
Host Aidy Bryant played to a warm crowd who chuckled at her jokes. The Spirits are “also known as the bisexual Oscars,” she said. Being an awards show host is tricky, she added, “I could be panned, considered out of touch, and sexist, and potentially be slapped. Worst case: nobody mentions me.”
When she tried roasting the celebrities, she called “May December” star Natalie Portman a “stupid bitch,” Sterling K. Brown “a Stupid K. Bitch,” and said of Charles Melton, “everyone wants to have sex with you, you stupid bitch” and Greta Lee, “you...

Jeffrey Wright took home the award for best lead performance at the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards for his role in American Fiction.
When Wright made his way to the stage to accept the award from presenter Colman Domingo, he expressed how thrilled he was to receive the honor from the actor. “Wow, thank you, thank you. And to receive this from you, Colman, man…it’s just a beautiful gift,” he gushed.
The American Fiction star had one of the most candid, heartfelt speeches of the night.
“It’s funny, you go to these awards shows, [and] you kind of grow tired of them and then you get one and uh…kind of changes the vibe,” he joked, met with raucous laughter.
He recalled attending the Independent Spirit Awards back in 1997, when he was up for best debut performance for his starring role in Basquiat. “The first time I was here at the Independent Spirit Awards,...

Despite final voting for the 2024 Oscars having already commenced, there is still juice worth squeezing out of the final stretch of award shows setting the tone for who could win on March 10.
For example, Best Picture nominee Christine Vachon introducing “Past Lives” writer-director Celine Song to accept the Debut Feature Award at the 2024 Kodak Film Awards on Friday, February 23 by saying “Celine’s integrity of vision, her absolute knowledge of the story that she wanted to tell, and her ability to communicate that to everybody on our set, and to the actors was just transcendent,” does tee up the recent DGA Award winner well in the ongoing campaign to pull off a surprise win for the Best Original Screenplay Oscar (BAFTA winner “Anatomy of a Fall” is the current frontrunner.)
So the 2024 SAG Awards being seen as the event that determines the result of the four acting races seems like...

Exclusive: T-Street filmmakers Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman have set Katie McNeill to become a producer at their independent studio. McNeill joins the film side of the company alongside producers Ben LeClair, Leopold Hughes and Nikos Karamigios.
McNeill joins T-Street on the heels of a big year for the company in both film and TV, where they produced the highly acclaimed films American Fiction and Fair Play, from first time writer/directors Cord Jefferson and Chloe Domont, respectively. American Fiction this week got five Oscar nominations including Best Picture. MRC/T-Street collaborated on the film, which was acquired by Orion and released by Amazon MGM.
Fair Play was acquired by Netflix in a bidding war at last year’s Sundance Film Festival launching the breakout writer/director Domont.
T-Street is gearing up to make the third installment of the Benoit Blanc franchise for Netflix later this year. The yet to...

On a recent Screen Talk podcast, producers Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman said they specifically tried to avoid overhyping T-Street’s film “Fair Play” before it sold to Netflix for $20 million and became Sundance 2023’s biggest sale. Elsewhere, Lily Gladstone took time at the IndieWire Honors gala to champion her competition title “Fancy Dance,” which to this day inexplicably hasn’t sold despite all the praise around it in last year’s competition slate.
Turns out, it was “Fancy Dance,” not “Fair Play,” that we included in last year’s Hot Sales Titles gallery. That shows how unpredictable Sundance can be, and why it’s so exciting. Surprise breakout hits pop every year. Movies with big star power don’t get scooped up by a streamer and give the little guys a chance to make a bid. And titles with all the buzz lose a lot of steam once audiences have finally seen them,...

There’s someone behind everything — you just have to dig. The global bestselling novels are headed to the screen in Netflix’s “3 Body Problem,” and the official trailer has arrived today.
Netflix’s highly anticipated new science fiction/drama series from creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo debuts globally on March 21, 2024 only on Netflix.
“What we are hoping to do is to convey the experience — if not necessarily the exact details — of the novel onto the screen. What stayed, we hope, is the sense of wonderment and the sense of scope, of scale, where the problems are no longer just the problems of an individual or even a nation, but of an entire species,” said Alexander Woo, Co-Creator, Executive Producer.

As we head into Oscar balloting on Thursday, let’s not forget about Chloe Domont’s Fair Play which reawakened the erotic thriller, and specifically spoke to the Me-Too era. The MRC and T-Street production went into Sundance last year under the radar and became the fest’s first big deal with Netflix scooping up the Alden Ehrenreich and Phoebe Dynevor movie for $20M.
The movie further propelled Domont from being a working TV episodic director on shows such as Billions, Ballers and Star Trek Discovery, to auteur status with this original screenplay she had been “compounding for years.”
You can listen to our Crew Call interview:
Fair Play tells the story about a promising, young, very successful couple, who are engaged to marry — except they work at the same Wall Street hedge fund. She winds up getting a promotion over him, which leaves the man spiraling as his fiancée...
