Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator” was the big winner at the 22nd Visual Effects Society Awards (held February 21 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). The AI-themed, sci-fi actioner earned five awards, including the top photoreal feature VFX prize. The other awards were for modeling (Nomad), created environment (Floating Village), effects simulations, and compositing & lighting (Bar).
“The Creator” utilized an innovative streamlining process in post, in which Ilm designed and placed the naturalistic VFX over the actors playing AI simulants and the photographic plates as set extensions. This made the $80 million indie look like a $200 million blockbuster, with director Edwards shooting the entire film guerilla-style in 80 locations throughout Southeast Asia as the primary camera operator with a small crew and natural light.
Meanwhile, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” the animated feature Oscar favorite (snubbed by the Academy’s VFX branch), took home four awards, including the top animated VFX prize. Sony Pictures Imageworks innovated...

J.A. Bayona’s “Society of the Snow,” the true-life survival thriller about the 1972 plane crash in the Andes with the Uruguayan rugby team, was shot with documentary-like realism by cinematographer Pedro Luque to connect the characters with the hostile environment. This was enhanced by photo-realistic VFX (including the use of mobile LED screens for 360-degree mountain backgrounds), led by supervisors Félix Bergés and Laura Pedro of El Ranchito. The Spanish film made the Oscar shortlists for international feature, visual effects, and sound.
“Being as real as possible is counter-intuitive,” Luque told IndieWire. “This happened in the 1970s. It’s not there anymore. It can’t be real, but it has to be real. That drive, it’s from Bayona, to be as precise as we can.”
The cinematographer and VFX team studied the Valley of the Tears, the site of the plane crash, to understand the geography, the space, and its dimensions.

Justine Triet’s acclaimed French courtroom drama Anatomy of a Fall has won best film at the 2023 European Film Awards, held Saturday evening, Dec. 9 in Berlin.
Sandra Hüller, a double nominee in the best actress category, won for her barnstorming turn in Anatomy of a Fall as a writer who may have killed her husband.
Accepting her prize, Hüller, speaking to the various conflicts raging in and around Europe at the moment, called for a moment of silence from the audience to “silently, strongly, vividly, imagine peace.”
Justine Triet took the best directing honor for Anatomy and shared the best screenplay honor with Arthur Harari for their joint script to the twisty murder mystery. A couple in real life, Triet and Harari said writing the script, which is a piercing dissection of a marriage in crisis, “put our relationship to the test but thankfully we survived.”

Easily one of the best movies of its kind, J.A. Bayona’s minute-by-minute tale of survival poses an immediate challenge to audiences: could I survive that? The genuinely terrifying true story of one family lost in the middle of a devastating disaster is even more relevant now, with similar disasters seemingly happening daily. The near-flawless direction concentrates on the direct experience of a mother and son, who in just a couple of days learn the meaning of human concern and kindness. It’s a Spanish production (in English); Naomi Watts received an Oscar nomination and Ewan McGregor and young Tom Holland give strong performances. We reach back ten years for this review.

It has been a long decade since Chilean director Alejandro Amenabar's last theatrical feature, Foreign Language Oscar winner "The Sea Inside." Now, he will finally revisit the bleak, genre-driven territory that first defined his career -- from 1997's "Abre Los Ojos" to 2001's ravishingly beautiful ghost story "The Others" -- with his next film, "Regression." Starring Ethan Hawke and Emma Watson, and also written by Amenabar, "Regression" turns on a detective (Hawke) whose investigation of a young girl's (Emma Watson) gravely serious accusations against her father (David Dencik) unearths a powerfully scary conspiracy. Hawke's Detective Bruce Kenner is aided by a psychologist (David Thewlis) who performs regression therapy on the father, also uncovering more unhappy memories. Translating the raw power of 2004′s cataclysmic Thailand tsunami to film would be an immense feat under any circumstance. But the task was all the more challenging for Félix Bergés, the visual effects supervisor of The Impossible (out in limited release on Dec. 21), who opted to skip the CGI in favor of real — read: unpredictable — water. After more than a year of testing and planning, Bergés and his team had precisely “one and a half takes” to pull off the film’s most pivotal set piece. Below, he explains the process behind the stunning, 10-minute sequence.
