Deepa Mehta is set to direct “Troilokya,” a thriller about an Indian woman known to be a serial killer. Production is through pan-Asian film company Through the Lens Entertainment and India’s Open Air Films.
The story, set in 19th century Calcutta during British rule, sees a female prostitute embark on an unheard of killing spree. For more than a decade, she is hunted down by detective Priyonath Mukhopadhyay. The screenplay, written by Juhi Chaturvedi (“Piku”), navigates through eccentric relationships fraught with lust, obsession, revenge and hatred.
Production is set for August and September with locations including India and Thailand. Though the Lens Entertainment is looking to appoint a distributor and aims for a theatrical release in India, with digital distribution in international territories.
“The challenge of depicting a serial murderess as a heroine is what intrigues me most about ‘Troilokya.’ ‘Is it possible to muster empathy for this child bride turned prostitute turned killer?...

Some of Hollywood’s most high-profile filmmakers, including director James Cameron, producers Kathleen Kennedy and Lili Fini Zanuck and composer John Williams have joined the growing chorus of voices asking the Academy to reverse course and present all 23 Oscars on the live March 27 telecast.
In a letter sent today to Academy President David Rubin and obtained by Variety, more than six dozen film professionals, including multiple Academy Award winners, contend that the plan to present eight awards during the pre-telecast hour will “demean” these crafts and “relegate [them] to the status of second-class citizens.”
The eight are original score, film editing, production design, makeup and hairstyling, sound, documentary short, live-action short and animated short. The Academy continues to insist that the nominees in those categories will be announced, and the winner’s acceptance speech aired, in edited form and aired as part of the three-hour ABC show.
That’s not good enough for these artists.

Exclusive: Warner Bros is sick and tired of having streaming sand kicked in its face.
As Village Roadshow heads back to the court docket today to further push Asap on the breach of contract lawsuit the longtime financier of tentpole flicks filed last week against the WarnerMedia-own studio over box office disappointment The Matrix Resurrections, WB have made a rare move to pull back the veil themselves.
After the usual dry corporate statement they issued last week, a Warner Bros spokesperson Monday took the white gloves off:
Village’s actions have been duplicitous and this dispute is equally contrived. Village was happy to have their name on the credits of the film, traveled to the world premiere in San Francisco, and held themselves out to the media as producers on the film. But they have now reneged on their contractual obligation to pay their share of the cost of the film.

San Francisco went green on Saturday evening as Lana Wachowski’s The Matrix Resurrections made its U.S. premiere at the city’s historic Castro Theater.
Naturally, Warner Bros. opted out of the standard red carpet for the event, in favor of a green one—with Mayor London Breed also getting in on the celebration of the film, which shot select scenes in San Francisco. “In honor of the Matrix Resurrection movie premiere tonight right here at our own Castro Theater, buildings across the city — including City Hall — will be participating in the Light San Francisco Matrix Green project!” she wrote on Twitter.

Warner Bros. will be showing off Village Roadshow’s The Matrix for the first time in Imax on Dec. 7 & 8 in select markets in the U.S.
All of this is a primer leading up to The Matrix Resurrections which is opening on Dec. 22.
The Keanu Reeves-Laurence Fishburne-Carrie-Anne Moss sci-fi action movie from the Wachowskis was a surprise hit when it was released in late March 1999, opening to $27.7M and yielded a $171.5M domestic, $466.3M WW gross. The filmmakers broke ground using the “bullet-time” visual style which wowed many. In addition, as the world was embracing the internet at the time, The Matrix tapped into and played on the virtual realities we now consume much of our time with, business and lifestyle wise.
2003’s The Matrix Reloaded was the first Warner Bros. release under the Imax Digital Remastering (Dmr) process for screens. To date, only Matrix Reloaded...

On Wednesday, Warner Bros. Pictures unveiled a new poster for The Matrix Resurrections via its official Twitter account.
“Step back into the Matrix with this new poster for The Matrix Resurrections,” read the photo caption. “Watch it in theaters and on HBO Max* this Christmas. #TheMatrix.”
Resurrections is the fourth film in the iconic sci-fi franchise which comes 18 years after the release of the sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, and 22 years after its launch with The Matrix.
It’s set 20 years after the events of Revolutions, and finds Neo (Keanu Reeves) living a seemingly ordinary life as Thomas A. Anderson in San Francisco, where his therapist prescribes him blue pills. Neither he nor Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) recognize each other. Subsequently, however, Morpheus offers him the red pill and reopens his mind to the world of the Matrix.

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the final trailer for director Todd Phillips Joker.
The film will be in theaters nationwide October 4.
Phillips “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

Village Roadshow Entertainment Group has hired Imperative Entertainment exec Jillian Apfelbaum as Evp Content. It’s one of the first moves made at Vreg since the producer-financier appointed ex-Sony Pictures TV boss Steve Mosko its new CEO last month.
Apfelbaum’s focus will be to identify and develop feature film projects with an additional focus on content development for TV and alternate platforms. Boosting its TV auspices was one of the main components in bringing in Mosko, who left Spt in June 2016 after a successful run overseeing global TV production, distribution of feature film and television content, and the studio’s international networks in 180 countries.
Apfelbaum will report to Bruce Berman, chairman and CEO of Village Roadshow Pictures.

Zazie Beetz refused to spill on her role in Todd Phillip’s “Joker” movie on the Emmys carpet, telling E!: “I can’t. I’ll probably lose my job if I do.”
“I am about to work on a movie with Joaquin Phoenix and I’m just such a huge fan,” Beetz said. “It’s such an honor to work with him and to follow him as his work.”
