Society opens door for non-us editors with launch at EditFest Global virtual conference.
American Cinema Editors (Ace) has created an international partnership programme allowing film editors from outside the US to become members of the honourary society.
The Ace International Partners programme will be officially launched at the society’s EditFest Global virtual conference event, staged this year on August 28 and 29.
The programme – developed by Ace international committee leaders Edgar Burcksen and Michael Ornstein, together with executive director Jenni McCormick – will be open to “experienced and well-established” editors who are members of an Ace-recognised editing organisation in their own countries.

The 2013 Saturn Awards were handed out Wednesday night, June 26, presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films. (For those of you without the complete collection of limited edition "Battlestar Galactica" commemorative plates, the Saturn Awards are basically the genre equivalent of the Academy Awards.) "The Avengers" was the big winner on the movie side of things, while "Breaking Bad" dominated in the TV categories.
Named the best science fiction film of the year, "The Avengers" also picked up awards for best supporting actor (Clark Gregg), best director (Joss Whedon), and best special effects (Janek Sirrs, Jeff White, Guy Williams, and Dan Sudick).
Elsewhere in the film categories, "Life of Pi" won for best fantasy film, "Skyfall" took home best action/adventure film, and "Cabin in the Woods" nabbed best horror film/thriller. Jennifer Lawrence and Anne Hathaway both added to their awards collections, with Lawrence winning best actress...

The 2013 Saturn Awards were handed out last night, and while horror was pushed to the background a bit, a lot of our favorites (and one glaring non-favorite) took home the gold.
In the favorites category you'll find The Cabin in the Woods, Killer Joe, Frankenweenie, "The Walking Dead," "Dexter," and the Universal Monsters. As for that not-so-favorite, well, just look at who won Best Supporting Actress for a TV series.
From the Press Release:
Marvel’s The Avengers received four Saturn Awards, the most of any film nominated this year, while "Breaking Bad" received three TV awards as the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films presented the 38th annual Saturn Awards, the top honors for genre entertainment. Marvel’s The Avengers was named Best Science Fiction Film and also received Saturn Awards for Best Supporting Actor (Clark Gregg), Best Direction (Joss Whedon), and Best Special Effects (Janek Sirrs, Jeff White,...

No, Channing Tatum will not steal the Wolverine title from Hugh Jackman but the actor is going to play a wolf-human hybrid for the Wachowskis' "Jupiter Ascending." Filming is underway right now and Tatum is co-starring with Mila Kunis. We told you back in April that "Jupiter" is about:
Being the Queen of the Universe! The Wachowski Siblings have started shooting the new sci-fi film "Jupiter Ascending" starring Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, Eddie Redmayne, Tuppence Middleton, Doona Bae, James D.Arcy, and Sean Bean.
Like a sci-fi twist on "Cinderella," Kunis stars as Jupiter Jones, Russian immigrant who scrubs toilets for a living but then discovers that she is next in line to be the Queen of the Universe! How quaint!
While promoting his upcoming action flick "White House Down," Tatum revealed to Movieline that he's a "splice" and they are "essentially built in a test tube. I'm a hybrid wolf and human.

Summer 2014 is already full of immensely anticipated blockbusters, and Jupiter Ascending is one of the few I’m most looking forward to, by far.
Coming off the back of co-directing Cloud Atlas with Tom Tykwer, Andy and Lana Wachowski have returned behind the camera to bring their long-awaited Jupiter Ascending to the big screen next year.
Production has officially begun here in Watford over at Warner Bros.’ Leavesen Studios. And the official press release, announcing that the film began shooting at the start of the month, brings with it the first synopsis:
Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning toilets and an endless run of bad breaks. The next film from The Wachowski Siblings (The Matrix trilogy, Cloud Atlas), the Science Fiction film Jupiter Ascending, has officially began production and Warner Bros has released the first synopsis of the film, giving us our first look at the story.
I've always been a fan of the Wachowski's films. I think they're amazing storytellers and I'm so disappointed that Cloud Atlas didn't do as well as it should have in the theaters. Alas, this is the way the film industry goes, especially when it comes to such esoteric fare as Cloud Atlas. Regardless, their next film, Jupiter Ascending, should have some more mass appeal to movie-goers as it's a full on science fiction film. Warner Bros. has issued a press release this morning announcing that cameras have started rolling on the film, and we've got our first synopsis for the movie (it's been underlined):

Today the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films announced its nominees for the 2013 Saturn Awards, one of the few awards programs in which a lot of us will recognize nearly every production. The awards have been expanded over recent years, so if you are unclear about just what type of productions are honored by the Academy, an explanation is included in the press release below, although it can really be summarized as “we know it when we see it.”

Among the predictable movies among yesterday’s Oscar nominations, Cloud Atlas was conspicuously absent. Cameron wonders what happened...
When Seth McFarlane joked "breath of fresh air" after the well known list of nominees for Best Supporting Actor were read out at yesterday's Oscar nominations announcement, his remark could have been aimed at the whole bland list - in every category.
Regardless of the predictability we see each year (not a new phenomenon, by any means) and the safety of the nominations (that's not my argument here), surely the fact that last year's Cloud Atlas - one of the most bold, challenging and imaginative films of the 21st century - is an embarrassment to the Academy and what they stand for.
Cloud Atlas is proof that truly original, thought-provoking and intelligent blockbusters can be produced, and produced well. This is exactly the sort of work they...

Before I begin to review Cloud Atlas, I will note that I have not read the book nor did I have any knowledge of its contents before viewing the film. All I knew were basic plot outlines/ideas, and the brief background information on a handful of studio stills.
With that said, nearly a week later, I still do not quite know what to make of Cloud Atlas. The film is composed of six different overlapping, connecting stories taking place across six very different generations.
The first story revolves around a man, Adam Ewing (Jim Sturgess), as he details his journey across the Pacific Ocean in the 1840s. Cut to the 1930s, where troubled composer Robert Frobisher (Ben Whishaw) recounts his exploits to a friend through multiple letters. And then in the 1970s, young journalist Luisa Rey (Halle Berry) investigates a murder related to a rather shady nuclear facility.

Chicago – It’s little surprise that Jessica Chastain has received so much attention during this year’s awards season. Thanks to a series of release date delays, six of her films were released in 2011, each featuring an entirely different role for the strikingly versatile actress. From her slapstick pratfalls in “The Help” to her ethereal grace in “The Tree of Life,” Chastain displayed a remarkable range that has made it impossible for moviegoers to tear their eyes away from her.
In John Madden’s problematic espionage thriller, “The Debt,” Chastain proves to be every bit as mesmerizing, though the film suffers considerably whenever she’s offscreen. Based on Assaf Bernstein’s 2007 Israeli thriller, “Ha-Hov,” the film cuts back and forth in time as it follows three Mossad agents on their mission to capture a Nazi surgeon. Though the central action takes place in 1965, the film repeatedly jumps 31 years in the...

Welcome back for part two of my four part look at the early 2011 Oscar Contenders. If you didn't check out Part One you can do so right here or use the link at the bottom of page two of this post. However, first things first, there has already been a change to part one as a watchful reader has pointed me to an article from the Los Angeles Times saying Andrew Jarecki's All Good Things is no longer at the Weinstein Co. as the director has bought back the domestic rights and is now shopping them around to potential distributors and hopes to have a deal in place shortly. This doesn't change much, but it does mean we have a change in distributor.
There was also a slight change in my numbers as another film was added to my list, bringing the total to 73 individual films plus my animated and documentary contenders,...
